Do You Think I Should Take Accutand

I know most of us are scared of accutane, since I am and that's why two times I was offered it I was scared and couldn't do it. It just seems like it's too much :(

I'm almost 18 years old, a female, and I have dealt with acne since I was 11. It seems like it's never going to pass and leave me for good. It's not the "I get acne around my period" acne.. It's the I'm constantly broken out wtf is wrong with my body acne. It's mild but extremely persistent and when I turned 15 it spread to my back and upper arms. I have acne hyper pigmentation on my upper arms and face. And a little on my back. My mom never had acne as a teenager. My dad did though but he outgrew it in his early twenties and it's forever gone. I've just given up on me outgrowing this, especially since everywhere I read (especially on this site) that acne is a permanent condition for adult women. I really don't want adult acne. I eat very healthy, exercise, don't really stress unless I break out super bad :( I don't want to still be dealing with acne in my 30s 40s and 50s which I guess is very common from what I read. My doctor has given me pills (antibiotics) and I've taken many different kinds with only yeast infections (sorry tmi) as my result. I've given up, I've done it all. I don't believe anyone when they say it goes away because it hasn't for me.

Do you think I should take accutane? I'm also a huge needle phobe but I guess I will have to get over it since there's not

Much hope for me :(

If your acne isn't severe then I wouldn't recommend accutane until you've tried everything else.

As you're a girl you could try hormonal treatments such as the pill or spironolactone which prove to be very effective for some people.

What's your skin care routine? And have you tried Dan's regimen?

I agree with Morgan, don't take accutane before trying hormonal treatment.

I third this.

If you've only tried antibiotics, take advantage of your other options before Accutane. A good, reputable derm. would know that.

I strongly believe if a doctor recommends/prescribes something to you and your instincts don't agree, go to another doctor.

I learned that the hard way, but it paid off.

Well.. I'm on yaz and am almost done with my first pack and I still have acne. But, I know I should probably give it a couple months.

I don't want to take birth control, or do dans regimen the rest of my life either. I can't afford the purchasing of the regimen and my time is very limited going to school and work I hardly have time to do all of this. So basically I'm screwed unless I take the accutane plunge.

I really don't want to end up taking accutane because I end up with acne when I'm 30... I mean the way if effects me now ill end up a hermit. Gosh acne why do I have you :(

Whatever route you decide to go on to treat it, you'll have to make time for it. Even if you decide to go on Accutane, you'll have to make time for ongoing doctor's appointments and bloodwork. Nothing will be an easy quick fix without any effort.

Yeah my mom and pretty much everyone I know said the same and here I am 5 years later at 23 yo and it's still here. We're different, you may be cured in two weeks or you can still have acne 5 years from now on. Don't repeat the same mistakes I've made, don't blindly trust incompetent thiefs like over 95% of the dermatologists. Tu cure acne, you have to know why you have it, not me or a friend of a friend. You. Have you ever had a full set of tests to see what causes your acne? Like blood tests, bacteria, fungus, parasites, endocrine, testosterone, DHEAS, estradiol, prolactin, LH/FSH ratio and many others tests for kidneys, liver, stomach, allergies etc., VISIA too?

Oh well I'm not going to be 23 years old sitting around wishing for my acne to go away. I'll just go on accutane since I guess it's not going to go away since no one is saying it will. I mean a lot of my friends have taken accutane. Goodbye

In your first post you said you were to scared to do Accutane and you didn't do it and now you say you've been through the Accutane process twice? :) Learn to read first before bitch*ng at people who've been where you are try to help to you, I wasn't sitting around and wishing for my acne to go away just so you know. Whatever, people like you don't deserve a second of attention.

You just want someone to tell you to take Accutane even though you're scared, and to assure that you will have perfect clear skin and no side effects and everything will be great.

My roommate went completely bald on her first course of Accutane. Her skin cleared up for about a year. Now she is getting pimples again just as her hair is growing back.

I also know several people who have been on THREE courses of Accutane and STILL are not clear.

Accutane does two things: temporarily shrinks the sebaceous glands and temporarily decreases testosterone. The sebaceous glands grow back over time, and the hormones bounce back as well.

What usually happens when Accutane works "forever" is this: their glands shrink a lot, by the time the glands grow back they have gotten a bit older and their hormones have settled down due to aging, and so even though they have fully functional sebaceous glands again, they don't have the hormones stimulating oil production from them anymore.

Maybe you will take it and it will be a magic bullet for you. But maybe you won't. Sorry for being honest, but I'm not going to lie to you.

If you want to take Accutane, take it. But you need to fully accept the risks that come with a serious drug, and the possibility that it won't clear you after all.

If you just want a hug and warm fuzzies, talk to your mom.

Oh well that sucks. What a sad story. I'm not asking for that, I have dealt with acne for so long I'm asking for someone to tell me if it is worth it or NOT. Obviously all of you are extremely rude. Everyone (10+) people I know have gone on it and their hair is perfectly fine. My friend who has been on it has taken accutane for 7 months, gets very little pimples infrequently. Of course you can expect to get the occasional zit throughout your life.. But do I want to deal with acne as an adult? Of course not, everywhere I read it says that I am going too. So I would rather be bald then deal with acne forever. I am going to take accutane, and live my life to the fullest. Oh and btw thanks for the recommendation I am trying to reach my mom... lol I love spending time with my mom :)

I don't understand this either. Because apparently from what I read women will suffer into adulthood. What about those women who have taken accutane (like my friends?) they don't have acne anymore. So accutane obviously cured them.

I've gone through getting the acceptance of accutane with I pledge and did my first blood tests but I chickened out because of fear. But I'm not gonna let fear stop me. I'm just saying I'm not gonna waste away my years crying (like as I am now) about my skin issues that I have no control over. I don't need your help.. You're no doctor. I've come to realize that acne.org is just a biased site full of angry people who wanna take it out on others. Like I said, I'll get real help since you didn't even need to bother because you're the least encouraging.

I'm better informed than almost every dermatologist regarding acne, I don't have to be a doctor, if you don't want our help, don't come here. No offence, but you're really stupid and I'm going to give it a last shot, because I don't desire acne to no one, not even to a rude person like you. Go ahead and read my first post in this thread again and if you still can't understand what I'm saying, ask your parents to read it for you. If you still can't figure it out, this is what I said, without being rude obviously:

- Acne may or may not go away for some of us. It may go sooner, later or never.

- I warned you about my mistake of trusting 5 different dermatologists without researching about acne on the Internet, and got scammed by them, in the same way that millions of people get scammed too. I've taken 4 different antibiotics, 9 creams and peeling sessions, all in vain. The doctors gave me these treatments without asking for tests from me, so they were trying their luck on my skin and money.

- And then I asked you if you had a full set of tests, specific tests to determine what is the root cause of your acne, not simply blood tests. Plus, a very helpful thing called VISIA.

I wish someone would have been as "rude" as I was with that post 5 years ago, so that I wouldn't be in this situation right now. I don't have to encourage you to take Accutane, I offered you my knowledge regarding this disease, without expecting anything back. You don't have to believe me obviously, I consider I just did my job of a good human being trying to help a person suffering of the same disease as I do, even if it was a tiny help, I'm sure it's worth it. I wish you good luck.

hey op, hope tane works out for you, just go easy and understand your body as it changes, or if something doesn't feel right. On reflection, I too wish i had gone on accutane years ago, I didn't, i developed BDD and compulsive skin picking, which has now led to scarring here and there on my face or where ever i picked.. I am now 26 and still get mild spots in random places, face, shoulders, chest, legs.... point is, maybe people shouldn't be so scarred and just listen to the doctors advice?

furthermore, I didnt go on accutane when i had the chance (deep cysts) nodules etc, and now i just get occasional white heads, clogged pores. just looks worse because of the marks, hyperpigmentation etc. Also I haven't come across one type of moisturisers that doesn't eventually break me out. it just doesn't exist, again slowing the process of obtaining healthy skin. sigh.

Andrei11, i think your post was good and informative. what is VISIA? how do you go about obtaining these tests? local gp or specialist?

Search VISIA on youtube, in my country (Romania) you can obtain those tests only in a few clinics, a local gp can help you.
