Sword's Dermabration by Dr. Y

I'm 9 weeks post-op. That's the main concern I had too, looked like a finger was pressed unto my cheek and left an impression. It took about a month for it to completely disappear, but nonetheless it did. Patience!!

Dear Sword,

Hi, this is kwi, how's your healing going?

i'm writing this, because today i noticed some indents in my skin about the size of my pinky nail, indents which have never been there prior to my dermabrasion.

they are in about three places on my cheeks, and although cassandra did mention to me after my derma that during the healing process, some parts of the skin may look like it has been gauged out, since skin does not heal uniformly,

and i did talk to cassandra early today about this and she told me that it's all about healing process, so as therefore not to worry about it, eventually, the skin will be filling in, but i am still worried, because the areas that seems gauged, there were no scars to begin with, and i can't understand why only those areas seem to be indented, whereas the rest of my skin looks very plump-and especially, i don't think it's ( the indentations ) because the surrounding areas have scabs, since all my scabs have fallen off.

so i thought maybe i had scars underneath my skin ( tunnels ) and maybe that's why they became visible after the derma, but cassandra told me that i had none of that, and if i did, the dr. would have known while he was doing the derma on me.

i mean everything else looks great except for the few newly developed indents.

what i meant to ask you was did that happen to you too, sword?

i mean i know it has been only eight days since my derma, so i guess my skin should be changing everyday, but i'm just so worried those indents will never fill in , or on the worse side, become even worse.

now i'm thinking my scabs fell off too early and maybe that's why it left those indents,

anyway, sword, did similar things happen to you too?

or anyone else who's had derma, could you pleas help me on this?

sincerely,

kwi

ah,,AA i was just trying to help ;AA and plus i don't think there's anything wrong for men to shop around for make up!

anyway, if you do feel that you need some further advice on choosing make-up, you are always welcome to ask me anytime~!

by the way, are you being sarcastic because somehow you feel that i have offended you in some way?

if that's the case, please don't feel offended.AA like i said, i was only trying to help in any little ways i can.

or if you weren't being sarcastic, please forgive my misunderstandings, since i do kinda have trouble understanding jokes, since my english isn't that great.

good night~

No prob., Heal well :o)

hi, falnhart!  ah, thank you so much for answering to my concerns.

yes, i guess i was being very impatient, and especially since i felt all of my other problem areas were healing so well--except for those areas.

i'm glad i read your reply before i called cassandra again about this.

i have been calling her like three days straight about every little concerns i had,

and i sure don't want to be you know " a pain in the butt " *^^*

again, thank you, and have a great day~!

To give you an idea what's its like, my heart rate doubles whenever I visit cosmetic counter and my palms sweat. biggrin.gif

Oh...I am sorry I wasn't trying to be sarcastic. I am not offended in anyway. Shopping for cosmetic is something I don't feel comfortable doing. Haven't you heard real MEN don't wear make up. It is not fun for me. I rather be at Home Depot shopping for power tools or at Best Buy looking at the latest consumer electronics. Yes...I will definitely take your offer for help since you are in NYC. Thanks!!!

BTW I wish you a speedy recovery.

Hey dj,

At Day 23 I am still red as a tomato. Nothing much new to report, it takes months for internal swelling to totally go away, so I'll save further assessment until later. I have to admit currently I am more obseessed about my skin tone than scar improvement. lol.gif

Sword

Sword, just wanted to thank you again for sharing your experiences with this procedure. I spoke to Cassandra yesterday and I feel really confident about my decision to have dermabrasion with Dr. Y. I fly out Monday and have it done on Tuesday. Hope all heals well with you. Thanks again

Hi Steven and Kwi1225,

Sounds like you are both in NYC or vicinity... I am too. I have my dermabrasion scheduled for July and punch floats in June, but somehow Dr. Y's office lost my deposit check! I wrote it out to his partner, Sharon S. Meyer (as the office asked me to). Did you all have to write the check out to her name as well? I felt a little uncomfortable at first because I had no idea that Dr. Y had a partner (or another Dr. that he set up his office with).

Anyhow, I've also been thinking alot about whether I really need dermabrasion... I mean no one really NEEDS it, but my scars are relatively mild (some days they seem worse than other days). Hmm, this constant debate in my mind is wearing me down.

Any advice on how you finally made that plunge would be greatly appreciated!! wub.gif

What does this "^^" means? I have to admit sometime I am socially inept.

BTW I really appreciate your offer to accompany me to the cosmetic store. Thanks!!!

Steven,

Did you have your punch floats back in November? I am wondering how they healed without the dermabrasion yet. I am having a few in June and have a function to go to almost three weeks after (but before I get a derma test spot), and I don't want it to look funny. I am a girl though so can cover with makeup.

Kwi,

Did you have punch floats before you were considering dermabrasion? I was wondering if they needed smoothing out and what was used. I too have very minor scarring, just about 8 icepicks that bother me, and maybe a small shallow boxcar or two. I think a full-face derma is too invasive for me. The most I am willing to consider are my cheeks, as the scars are limited to a small area on each cheek. In fact, if I could just get the floats with some spot dermabrasions I would be happy. Dr. Y agreed to do a couple floats and a small test spot to see how it goes.

Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Thanks a lot Kwi. How were the final results of the floats before the dermabrasion. Did they blend in well, and how long did it take?

Thanks again! It is so helpful hearing other people's experiences so I know the right questions to ask the doctors.

BTW, it is difficult to find people that do punch floats. I am in Austin, though I guess I haven't looked that hard in Houston yet. If anyone knows anyone there, please let me know. I go to NO a lot to visit friends, as I went to college there, so it's almost as easy for me to see Dr. y.

Thanks to all those ppl who have posted about their experiences with dermabrasion. It really helps those of us who will be undergoing the same procedure soon. I read through all those pages that Leo started off and then Portlandboy, LeafsFan, Poe, Sword, Drewboy...basically if someone had something to say about Dr. Y I read about it.

I'm one of those ppl who always thought I would have to just live with the scarring that I have. I mean, it's already been over 10 years with the scarring, you kinda get used to it - except when you see yourself in car mirrors, or bad lighting and you think to yourself, omg that is disgusting, is that what I subject ppl to when they look at my face? I know it sounds neurotic but I just get so self-conscious in those types of situations.

So I began to read about Dr. Y early this year, avidly reading everyone's posts. I live in Sydney so have been talking to John_Sydney a lot since he is pretty much an expert here with Dr Y's procedures...and after thinking about it a lot - I decided last week to make an appointment with Dr. Y. I woke up at 3.30am to call Dr. Y long distance and was so nervous, I don't think I really gave him a good impression. In any case, it's an expensive procedure, esp when you include the flight over. I plan to stay in NO for about 9-10 days after the surgery.

So I have been going through lots of doubts, swinging up and down on whether I should go through with this. Can I live with the downtime, what about all those hassles with getting time off work? Then I thought, this is my skin. Any improvements will be worth all this trouble and money.

So I've made a compilation of all the advice that ppl have given with regard to this surgery. I thought this would be helpful to those who have just had the surgery or will be going through with it soon. My procedure will be on April 26, so anyone else reading this who will be seeing Dr. Y around that time, it will be great if we can chat or meet up in NO.

Sorry for the long post. I've been a lurker for so long, it's strange to finally write.

I had a total of 9 punch floats done on my cheeks in November. 4 punch floats were on my left cheek and 5 punch floats were on my right cheeks. My ice pick scars were not very large or very deep. Dr. Y told me I don't need them. The dermabrasion would take care of them. Since I was there I elected to do them all. Most of the punch floats healed within two weeks but the dark discoloration took about 1 1/2 months to fade. People at work asked what happen to my face. I told them it was allergic reaction to too much oysters in New Orleans. Other than commuting to work I hid at home.

The tape on three of the punch floats came off prematurely. Stupid me decided to work on my car and totally forgot about the tape. When I wipe the oil smears off my cheeks with the back of my hand I pulled out three of them. I hate taking photographs so I don't have any picture of me with the punch floats.

...ok guys, what's wrong with going to work with a red face?...i mean they knew u took a holiday right?...maybe people r just talking about how fried u got from the sun  cool.gif .....i guess my main concern when going back to work would be that i had minimum swelling....since i don't wear make-up as a rule, i would probably only use it to blend in the demarkation line only.

Hey Leaf smile.gif,

Do you sleep well? I find that good work outs help me relax and sleep better.

be that as it may, i look much better in overall tone and have decreased depth of scarring.

I am almost at 5 months post derm on Apr. 9th. I am thinking about a second one within the next 2 yrs. It had improved 75% of my scars (around). But I did leave out some ice picks that I would like to take care of. The healing is deffiucult and I am still healing myslef... even after 4 1/2 mths. I get a little red when I wash my face and I am asian and have a slight brownish spot on my jawbone that seems to fade more and more each month... It is still healing so I do not use the bleach! Overall well worth it!! Hey Steven, I remember you at Dr. Y's office!

Hi Sunblock,

Thanks for the update. By difficult healing I suppose you mean the redness? Did the redness gradually fade, or did the fading accelerate at any point? How about the dermacation line, do you still see it?

When I get up my face look light brown, after I wash my face it turns red, too!

At day 33, the redness is driving me insane. It looks a bit less angry than last week though.

Thanks!

Sword

To sword and other dermabraded useres:

Do you guys make conscious efforts to avoid the sun and sunlight? Or do you guys just wear sunscreen and still go about your pre-dermabrasion daily outdoor activities? Like for example, if you had to mow the lawn or something, what would you do? Or driving home in the evening after work when the sun is out, what do you do? Also, how much sunscreen do you guys use? I usually use very conservative amounts, because too much sunscreen tends to clog my pores and break me out. The reason I ask these questions is because I plan on having a dermabrasion in the next 2.5 yrs (I am 19, turning 20 in June), and I am the de facto "man of the house" because my father is away for work. Thus, I am the one responsible for all outdoor chores. A response will be much appreciated. eusa_angel.gif

Also, I hope you're healin' well, Sword
