Thanks for your response.
Yep, I know that's what I'm looking at. I'm going in a few days to show my derm, and she can hopefully help me with saline and/or filler.
I am definitely worried about doing filler (I've never done it before) and the possible outcomes. I've read this thread extensively, and I know that a few posters still found the area looked uneven even with filler!!
But I'm desperate at this point, for less depth. Even if the skin doesn't exactly right until 6 months or a year on (if ever!!), if I could just get the mostly dent filled I think I could live with that! I am no stranger to discoloration and small dents, I have them all over my face and I've accepted them. But a huge freaking dent right in plain sight just takes it over the edge for me.

Just wanted to follow up on this thread. Did your issues resolve? I just got a dent from cortisone atrophy right in the middle of my cheek under eye so I am hoping you can provide a positive update. Am so distressed
@sunnyside31These heal by themselves, taking a year sometimes. Goto your dermatologist and have them do saline injections (cheap just water) or prp injections (overkill for one spot). They can subcise using a tiny needle but cannot use filler or you could go blind as this is a vascular area (artery).
Hi!

Just wanted to follow up on this thread! Hoping your issue resolved. I am now experiencing the same issue on 2 different spots on my face. Any insight/advice/light at the end of the tunnel you could provide would be sooo much appreciated!
Thank you for your time!

I posted a few weeks ago on a different thread, I was really distressed as well. I went for three weekly saline shots and that got me to a place where I wasn't so depressed anymore. I still have some unevenness in the area but it no longer looks like a sinkhole on my face, so I can live with it and hope for more evening out over the months ahead. And even if it hardly improved from here, I'd still be able to live with it. I don't think about it anymore. Based on others' experiences here, I consider myself really lucky that this resolved quickly and didn't drag on and on.
Hopefully they have improved by now!! I have had several atrophy/ indent....I have one right now. It is super frustrating:( My worst healed in 3 months (to where it was unnoticeable, prob not 100%), the smaller ones were faster (1 month-ish). I supplement with collagen powder, vitamin C, and I've also gotten acupuncture around them. Hopefully yours are better!! It is such a slap in the face post injection!!!
I had several kenalog injections 5mg into pimples that most likely should not have been injected, but my derm never told me of the side effects! Even worse the nurse was doing them. On the last injection two days later not where I was injected, but the skin right above it indented in. I am about to hit the two month mark and have no progress yet. Also, I have had three saline injections so far and still no improvement. Im hoping at 4-6 months it will be totally filled in since there was not even a cyst there just being totally related to the steroid injection. Asking for success stories or anything that has been found to help. When have you seen the most healing occur? Anything else to try? Please tell me my skin will go back to normal!
Hey everyone,
A month ago I had a pimple injected on my forehead which I've done several times without any issues. This time however, I noticed a dent formed one week later. Thus, the divot has been there for three weeks now. It is pretty small so I know I shouldn't be too upset about it but regardless it is anoying (the pimple wasn't even that bad to begin with). Anyway I have heard that the forehead is prone to divoting when it comes to these shots. Has anyone else experienced this? Does your skin fill back up eventually or is this permanent ? .
PS should mention that I am 25 and am not usually prone to acne scarring so I am hoping this means I have good collagen and I will be fine lol but I'm still concerned !
Ive read here that they can take a very long time to fill in and they will fill in on their own.
However, I had a few injections in cysts on my cheeks when I was 25 and sadly, they never filled in. I had so much cystic acne I didnt even realize it was leaving atrophy until it was too late. Be glad its only one small spot.
It's approximately 2 years of atrophy on both my butt cheeks. Really depressing. The dents are a hundred times more shallow than it was in the 1st month of atrophy. Trauma was caused by a quack nurse who erroneously injected me with steroids instead of antibiotics. This never gets better.
Hi! My teenage daughter is developing a cyst on her face. As I have severe acne scars, I want to do everything I can to treat this early and limit scaring for her. We are out of the country and do not know anyone local so I will need to find a sort of walk-in clinic. What kind of treatment should I request/hope for? Thank you for your help!
The best thing to do would be to get a cortisone injection to reduce the inflammation as quickly as possible. Prolonged inflammation is what leads to most atrophic acne scars so reducing it quickly is the best thing you cna do at this point.
Cortisone shots have been known to lead to atrophy. I regret cortisone shots. However, I've learned here that my cysts probably would have scarred no matter what. If she does get one, please ask the doctor about the risk of atrophy and if they can only inject a very small amount. Atrophy comes from over-injection.
How long until she can get to her regular dermatologist?
That's why you always get the lowest concentration of cortisone as possible. Most of the horror stories involved doctors who were clueless and injected very high concentrations of cortisone recklessly. Most of the indentations that may result from lower concentrations of cortisone will usually build back up. The ones that are permanent usually involve very high, repeated doses.
I used to have atrophy from cortisone (Kenalog) injections into my keloids about 6 months ago! And after Googling madly and finding a handful of threads here and elsewhere, I saw that saline injections seem to have a decent success rate. I asked my derm to inject my dent - she was really skeptical, but she did it. I guess it's not something not all derms are familiar with as a treatment ...? I brought a printout of that study's abstract that others referenced (this one). And I definitely saw improvement of the dent within a month! It was back to the same height as the surrounding skin on my chest! The healing, though, took at least 3 weeks. I had a lot of bruising around the area (as well as an unrelated reaction to the bandage adhesive ... yeah).
Sidenote: Now I'm seeing threads online about people using saline injections just on normal acne scars and reporting that it's working for some! Interesting! I hope this becomes more common and well-known.
Actually, after that month, the keloid came back as a raised bump - I wonder if the saline or just the needle prick stimulated it. So, the opposite problem of atrophy. I have been oscillating between the two extremes for at least 7 years now (I have 2 other keloids, except those have healed, flattened, and lightened now, and will hopefully stay that way. I did experience slight atrophy for those too after the cortisone injections, but those filled in on their own, thankfully).
So I just got another cortisone injection into the keloid - my derm said she would dilute the 40mg with saline. And now I'm wondering if it wasn't enough cortisone to completely flatten it, ugh. But better to be conservative with the cortisone, right? And I know it takes a few days or weeks to see the full effect of the cortisone. It'll be annoying to have to go back for another tentative shot, but I'll do it. Anyway, fingers crossed I don't need to.
Keloids are really rough, especially in a very visible place. They've done a number on my self-esteem through the years ... and increased the amount of high-necked shirts I own ... and I know mine aren't even that big or dark, and I know I've been lucky that my other 2 scars have mostly faded. So I really feel for everyone going through this. Good luck and remember the scars don't define you, no matter how obsessive you get over them! And keep pushing for solutions, seek out other derms who are more willing, careful, whatever you need.
I had a cortisone injection placed into a small white coloured keloid scar (About 1cm in diameter) on my forehead recently. My doctor did warn me about cortisone quite often causing atrophic dents, so I was well informed. We both decided it was best to inject a tiny dose.
Results - I'm quite happy. Yes, I do have a small dent, but even if this doesn't fill up over time I would be happy because it looks much better than what it was!
The kicker is that my lump kept going down for three weeks! I actually though it only had a minimum effect after seven days. I will just have to wait and see if that atrophic part fills in over the next few months.
To the original poster - it sounds like you're young and you're a good healer, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. The dent may improve in appearance and fill up over the next six months. All the best.

I got an injection in 3 spots on November 16th now it's the 29th and I noticed in each section around the actual cyst the skin is slight depressed. I can feel it with my finger and see it up close in the mirror. My question is will it get worse? Or could this be it and it'll get better? Is there anything I can do to speed up the healing process? I'm a wreck right now.
