Yes, definitely avoid icing it in the future then...a warm compress would be a better option for sure. I am really hoping the best for you. Maybe there's more progress but it's only noticeable to others, sometimes we can be overly critical of ourselves and it's a good sign your BF saw a change. Hang in there.

I can definitely say cortisone injections work! It's almost gone. But I'm concerned about my skin denting. I don't see anything yet to be honest and I'm hoping nothing happens. Have you ever had a cortisone injection?

I used a poultice of all kinds (including aloe Vera) for three days before I got the shot. I basically exhausted all my options and saw absolutely no difference. The cyst wouldn't budge. It's now been about 27 hours since the injection and the cyst is STILL there! It's now considerably less inflamed and a lot flatter and about the size of a piece of lint. So I guess it was pretty stubborn. I will definitely keep applying my aloe Vera lotion to my skin to help healing though :)

Well the redness from the cyst is almost all gone but the actual cyst is still there- thank god it doesn't hurt anymore, and it is very, very tiny. No one can see it but I can feel it. It's been shrinking quite slowly...I'm not sure if that's normal. No signs of skin atrophy. I guess my nurse must have used very little cortisone because my results are great but they're nothing like the dramatic results I've seen some people have (totally gone and a clear patch of skin in 48 hours). I hope the slow shrinking is normal.

Hi.
Im in month 6 of skin atrophy and it is still very bad. Maybe 30% better since its worst moment.

I did 3 saline shots already, they may have helped but I'm not sure.

Hey everyone. I'm new to this board!

I've been trying to find some forums to talk to people about steroid atrophy and noticed a few posts related to it on here so I thought I'd give it a go.

I was prescribed a very potent cream about a month ago which I used on my forehead and cheeks for a week. All was fine until about 2 weeks when I started to notice the skin on my forehead was becoming thinner. For the past 2 weeks, it's gotten worse, and now it's started on my cheeks. They've become sunk, and the skin is becoming thinner/crepe-paper like.

Well no surprise I'm going out of my mind here - especially with all the conflicting information about atrophy on the net - some sites suggest it's permanent, others suggest people have made a recovery. My fear now is that it will continue to get worse. It's been 4 weeks since I first used the cream and 3 weeks since I stopped. Surely it can't continue to get any worse.

I actually can't quite believe this is happening to me. One trip to the doctors has caused all of this!

Has anyone here suffered with this/have stories to share? If so I'd love to hear from you.

Hi there,

IF you do a search for "atrophy" in the search bar several topics come up. I haven't seen a lot recently. Yes steroids including kenalog andhydrocortisone can thin your skin "atrophy". The best you can do is stop the treatment, and do things that stimulate collagen formation. Microneedle, sculptra to the cheeks, subcision and suction or with filler if you have depressions. Taking grass fed collagen, lots of proteins, cut out sugar, low on carbs, don't smoke etc... Pure HA serum can help, EGF (growth factor), PRP treatments. Some make a recovery over quite a period of time, others don't. You can even out the skin with say tca peels, etc. Also look at realself.com for steriod atrophy or atrophy and see what the doctors say.

Thank your for the reply - I did find a few older threads. I'm really hoping to speak to others who have been through this. Thanks for the tips, especially the "grass fed collagen" - I hadn't heard about that before! I'd like to think micro needling would be a last resort for me.

My big anxiety now is that it doesn't get any worse. Tomorrow will be 4 weeks since I used the cream.

I'm just gobsmacked that I was given this by my doctor and not warned about any side effects!

Hi everyone, first of all, thanks so much for reading this post.

A little on my backstory: I have cystic acne, went on Accutane on a high dose for a long time in 08-09, but still get cysts pretty regularly. In the fall of '14, I was in a fragile state, and I stupidly went back to the same doctor around 4-5 times for a cortisone shot for ONE CYST. (I AM AN IDIOT. He is, too, I know). I'd sue him for malpractice if it wouldn't cause me emotional distress to revisit that experience..)

Flash forward a year (September '15), and I notice I have a dent in the spot where the cyst was. I quickly develop Body Dysmorphic Disorder and begin ˜checking™ my face in the mirror at least a hundred times a day. I still do this, and it™s been especially bad lately. I know the BDD would go away if the atrophy went away, though I also know that my anxiety and OCD are to blame for my spiraling anxiety over this.

I take a TON of selfies of the dent ¦ sometimes it looks OK and sometimes it looks terrible. I™ve attached the worst photos here, which is hard for me because I think they are/I am so ugly. But I™m at a loss and don™t know what to do. I feel hopeless and compare myself to every person I see, and also to old pictures of myself. Sometimes I consider my life as being broken in two ” before I got this dent and afterwards. This isn™t to say that I haven™t had serious problems in my life, but for some reason my obsession over this is one of the most difficult things I™ve had to wrestle with. I just can™t stop obsessing and hate my face so much sometimes.

What should I do? Would subcision work? Are there permanent fillers I can get? I don™t want more unevenness. I also have this fear that the dent will get worse and worse as I age ¦. also, I know it looks like a dimple in some lights, but the disturbing thing is that it looks like a DENT even when I don™t smile.

Can anyone help?? It hasn™t gone away ” I read in other posts that people have updated to say that theirs disappeared after some time. I am so mad at the doctor that did this. He is an old doctor who seems out-of-touch and dismisses all of my concerns. I shouldn™t have gone to him, but I was depressed at the time and just wanted a quick fix. I went back FOUR or FIVE times!! I feel I™ll never forgive myself for it.

Would appreciate any consolation, help, advice. Thank you so much everyone. <3 <3 <3

Note: I have posted the 'worst' and then the 'best' photos, which make me feel better temporarily because the dent is barely visible

Subcision an filler will fix this right up. The filler will be replaced in time with collagen. You may need few of them every 6 months.

Do not do permanent fillers before you do HA fillers, you want your collagen to grow. If you don't like it they can dissolve it. If after a few times you like filler and subcision get Bellafill.

More about subcision in my faq below (signature). Some Drs are at the bottom of the list we know of here.

honestly looks like a dimple I wouldn't even think that was due to cortisone atrophy if you hadn't said it

Can you elab.on the cyst shrinking process and final divot? Like, did it eventually even out without inflammation(or without) but then eventually sank in?

Not to dismiss your concern but this is not that severe. I would recommend getting a temporary filler, which would fix it up easily. Try voluma, it's expensive but it lasts the longest of the temporary fillers. Give this a shot before you try a permanent filler.

Spend the money and save yourself the distress that you clearly are feeling. Not worth the stress. Five minutes and you'll be good to go. This is an easy fix.

I'm in the same boat as you except mine is red, and unfortunately on my cheek under my eye where everyone sees it when they look at me. I wish I had some advice or words of encouragement, but maybe you can take comfort in be fact that other people feel the same way.

Hi,

Have you had any improvement in your skin or has the atrophy continued? Also, is there any redness?

@mbdr2At this point your best bet is subcision and filler for atrophy that has been this way for 6+ months. This solution has helped many.

Have you tried dermaflage, it is like a make up to conceal depressed scars, for both men and women. it works wonders.

I searched about , and this is the type of product that help you in certain moments like parties. But the difficult is look everyday at the mirror and notice that your skin is lost a way you "cannot" fix, and It is really bad.

I had a problem with the called cortisone shot on my face.It makes you skin lose structure (colagen, fribroblats and whatever),and there is no perfect or specific solucion. I am doing treatments to produce colagen.
Never do a cortisone shot on your face, this is my advice.

Hi, new to the forum.

I am really beating myself up for a poor, poor decision I made during April.

About me - 25 year old male. For 4 years, I've had an extremely unusual bald patch in my beard, right on my jawline. The thing is, I was not dealing with a "patchy" beard. It is coarse in other areas, even the cheeks. the left side of my face grows thick facial hair.  I told myself at age 21 that if I didn't start seeing an improvement by age 25 that I would address it.

I have done tons of research and spent countless hours on how i could stimulate hair growth in the patch. I tried every conservative treatment out there that you could find online. No results. I decided NOT to give into to applying rogaine, which has become popular for beard growth these days (believe it or not) due to concerns about the systematic effects that applying it on the face can have (including heart issues).

I had read up on some people having a lot of success with cortisone injections into the beard for alopecia. It really seemed like this is what I was dealing with. So i went into the dermatologist and didn't shave for a few days so they could see for themselves what I was dealing with. She told me that any dermatologist would tell me that that's what I must be dealing with based on observing my face. To get to the point, the side effects weren't fully communicated to me, but I sort of knew about the "dent" risk going in and thought the potential reward outweighed the risk, as i thought the side effects were rare.

I got my first shot during the 3rd week of April and experienced no side effects (up to 3 weeks). I then received a second injection mid-May.

2 weeks later, I noticed a dent/atrophy. Picture attached shows how it is right now. The dent has been there about 6 days, and I haven't seen an improvement.

The picture doesn't really do it justice, I'm going to be honest, honest, it's really bad and very noticeable.

Symptoms:
1) atrophy/dent
2) very wrinkly/thin skin, especially when I squeeze around it
3) white hue

I'm honestly rattled right now... my confidence is shot and I'm so down right now. I've scoped every historical thread on these forums up and down, and while the majority of anecdotes out there will tell you these dents are usually temporary, it's not really enough to give me peace of mind because there is some chance it could be permanent.

Things could be worse but this is a really crummy way to start out my summer.

What am i seeking:
1) maybe some success stories?
2) at what point should I consider saline injections, which I've read can be effective?
3) any other words of wisdom are appreciated.

Thanks for reading
