You Want To See Cortisone Dent

Give it a few months to see if it fills in. I had one BIG cortisone-induced dent on my chin that did fill in, but it took at least 3 or 4 months to do so. I was very upset about it for the first 2-3 months, then I noticed it getting better. It looks fine now.

On the downside, I also have two small permanent dents where I received cortisone shots many years ago in another area.

I hope that yours fills in. I don't know of any early action that will help. I think you just need to wait a few months and see how your skin recovers.

dance

Thanks, Dance, for the help. Patience is obviously not my middle name. Hopefully the fact it was done less than a month ago and it was only one shot will work in my favor. I'll post if it starts to fill in or anything in case someone else out there is having as much fun dealing with this as I am. ;)

OK, thanks so much for the help. Is there a general time frame I should follow? I got the shot less than a month ago... is it too early to look into starting this?

i got an atrophy from a peel which is supposed to be similar to how a cortisone shot atrophy is.It was exactly like the way you mentioned. What has helped me was running,i lost around 10 kgs since my atrophy and my face shaped up very nicely, now i can say 95% of it is filled up or maybe i lost the surrounding fat beside the dent which was due to extreme cardio ( i feel its a bit of both) but either way it looks much better and is hardly noticeable unless i want to notice it while it was very visible no matter from where i looked from in the past.NOw im post 8 months since my atrophy & im assuming i improved cause of my running and losing fat but it could also be that time healed it.Usually doctors say if it doesnt fill in within 9 months it will not fill in at all and youll have to look in for fillers.

this is different than your experience, but i got cortisone shots for a had a keloid scar on my chest/shoulder area a while back. well, the scar went down, which i was happy about, but then the whole area just started caving in. it started looking like a huge dent-- i was so upset. it got worse each day. it just seemed like it wouldn't stop. i went back the doctor and he said just give it time, but i could tell even he was unsure what the result might be.

well after 3-4 months ( about the time i just accepted the reality of having the dent) the area started filling back in... slowly

today it is totally level with the surrounding skin. in fact you can't even tell i had the scar or the depression.

that was actually the one time a procedure worked out for me perfectly! ha

so you never know. it might fill back in...

I also have atrophy from a coritsone shot. I was wondering - do you think Tazorac would have any effect on these dents? I've never tried Taz, but reading these boards there seems to be a lot of people using it successfully - do you think it would help to level out the atrophy??

I asked my derm and she said Tazorac wouldn't do anything. She just said to wait it out and it will fill back in.

However, some people on these boards have put Tazorac or Retin-A on their atrophy every night. I guess it can't hurt. I tried doing it for a while, but it made my skin there extremely dry, which made it even more impossible to cover up.

I have another derm appt in 9 days (laser for red marks) and I am going to talk to the main dermatologist about fillers. I'll let you know what I find out.

Sucks having a big dent on your face, doesn't it?! ;)

I had a HUGE hole in the right side of my face from a cortisone shot. There is no other way to describe it. It looked as that part of my face had simply collapsed. My mother actually started crying when she saw it, and she is not that type of person, if you know what I mean.

I had the hole injected with Restalyne, which made it 100% better. You couldn't tell there had ever been a problem. The doctor who injected me said that the hole was so deep, she doubted it would ever be able to fill in naturally and that I would probably have to do some kind of injectable forever. Fortunately, she was wrong, though. Restalyne lasts about a year tops, and it has now been about three years since I had the injection. And my cheek is fine! Thank goodness. Apparently it DID fill in naturally, even though it was so deep.

I bet your's will fill in naturally too. The question is--how noticeable is it and how long will it take? In my situation, there was no way I could have gone around for even a month with my cheek in the condition it was in. People were already starting to ask if I had been in some sort of an accident.

If it is very noticeable and is bothering you, I don't think it would hurt to do some type of filler (other than the expense). But if it's not that bad and not causing you any problems, you might just wait. Either way, I bet it will fill in eventually.

Ok so I have two large dents from getting cortisone injections...one near my hair line..no biggie really. And one near my nose which causing me severe psychological distress. I made an appointment with a plastic surgeon for thrusday, and they said they'll take a look and probably do the injection that same day. It'll cost around 500 dollars...I have a very wealthy friend that I'll go cry to tomorrow night. So cost is not a problem. I've only had the dent for a few weeks now but I absolutly cannot put my life on hold any longer because of this. Do you think they'll inject it even though its fresh. Plus I'm on accutane..so is that a no go? Will it look normal within a few days? And finally, once the effects of the filler wears away (4-6 months) will my body have filled in the dent itself by then....or what if it self corrects and the filler is still there, will I have a bump??

Thank You.

Saline injections are suppose to help level indentions from cortisone shots. There is a study on this, you can google it.

good luck

Restylane is a good temporary filler, if you are getting that. I am not sure what is the protocol is for how soon can you inject a new dent. If done, it should stimulate some collagen growth. Often the cortisone caused dents will fill back in few months. But sometimes they don't. You will have a much better chance if you eat your veggies, don't smoke any cigarettes and avoid excessive sun. Don't stress out so much either, stay positive. A depressed mind will depressed the body and you will not heal as well.

Hi all,

How long does it usually take for the atrophy from a cortisone shot to show up? I had a cyst injected on my chin a 4 days ago and after reading all the posts about atrophy, am afraid that it will start to sink in.

Thanks!

I've had at least a hundred cysts injected.....and only one left an indentation. It took that cyst about a month to go down and then there was an indention left behind about the size of a dime. I asked my derm and he said give it about a year and it should fill in.

It only took somewhere between three and four months to fill in. I can't even tell where it was....

Thanks for the reply! It's been 5 days since the shot and I don't see much indentation yet so I'm hoping it will not begin to atrophy.

i wouldn't worry about it. i've had probably between 50-70 injections and ive never had any atrophy. it's very rare.

If you've read any of my posts, you know I complain about my dent from my cortisone shot constantly, but I'm at wits end. I know there are other topics on this, but I think I've read every one!

Here is my issue:

Had a reoccurring cyst for about a year in the same spot. Around December 10th, I got a cortisone shot. After about a week, the area started caving in. Check out my gallery for a pic of it. Anyway, it's been over a month and sometimes it looks better than others, but overall, it's not really filling in. Should I continue waiting? Is there anything at all I can do!??! I just want to cry.

Just remember that it can take a loooong time for scars to fill in. I have some that are about 5 months old and only now starting to fill in some. It can take up to a year. So give it more time before you freak out too badly. Chances are it will improve in time.

Personally, if it bothered me that much, i'd look into excision. Then some Fraxel for the remaining scar.

I dont know if this is true since I've never tried it. But naturally I would assume that if you increase intake of Vitamin C (which helps form collagen) these dents would be more apt to dissapearing? I really have no real evidence, but its worth a shot just to increase your intake of foods that contain Vitamin C as well as putting some sort of lotions that are high in antioxidants/vitamins.

The saline is working for me on the cortisone dent, you've got to try it. The dents are supposed to fill in over time, and they probably do, but saline is cheap and not dangerous, so go for it. I've had one shot and I can see an major improvement.

thats soo good that you too are seeing improvement. i got my first saline injection about a week and a half ago by dr sire and as of today i can tell you that its improved maybe 70% . he suggested i have 3/4 more shots at the most for it to completely heal. im also taking vitamin C, collagen pills, copper pills and omega 3,6,9 that i bought from gnc, they all help the healing process. the saline injections really does wonders on these indentations caused by cortisone injections.

I'm getting some C tomorrow -- what are collagen pills? How do they work? I thought the skin has to create the collagen itself. I guess also it's fat we're talking about? Fat atrophy. So we need time to grow back our fat. I'm really skinny so growing fat isn't so easy for me. Oh well . . .

Are you sure there isn't still any microscopic swelling there? I wouldn't think the saline would work so fast for permanent results, but maybe if you got to it early enough. My scars were old when I did it myself.
