Hi everyone! Man I'm so sorry that this has turned into a giant depressing thread! I hope everyone is doing well.
It was 6 months last friday I believe. I feel I am back to normal. There is a slight indentation where the one gigantic hole was, but I'm
confident that no one notices this besides me. I feel like myself again, actually even more outgoing than I was before since I hid myself for the past year. If it gets even better that's great, but if it doesn't I'll be okay with it.
I think it's hard to believe you will get better. I couldn't believe my mom, my doctors, any of you I've messaged with that came out the other side okay. But I did! And this experience has taught me a lot - doctors don't always know best, ask questions, when in doubt sleep on it, and appreciate everything you have right now because it could be worse, it has been worse. I'm stronger for it, which is what I was hoping for.
Thank you for your reassurance. I think it's difficult to believe that it will get better since its been there for so long. Hopefully by my 6 month mark it will be hardly noticeable or gone. It's been even more difficult because I've had clogged pores, and even some milia right in that area. Almost en circling the atrophy. I don't know if its because the skin in confused?? I also heard that sprionolactone (which I've been on for about 2 months) can slow healing. Who knows. I'm just over having to look at this every day. I'm going to my Derm on Monday.
Oh I know exactly how you feel. It's TOUGH. This has been the hardest thing psychologically. But I think I'm on the home stretch. I'm close to 6 months since the cortisone injection so I've had this indentation for over 5 months (crazy!). It is finally getting to the stage where I feel like I can show my face mostly without embarrassement. I can still see it, and the discolouration is still there a bit, but I think it looks more like a garden variety little imperfection now than a hole in my face! And it is still improving so I have faith it'll heal.
From my experience and others here, it seems like 6 months is a typical timeline to expect for a decent sized dent but not one to get hung up on. I had 3 saline injections along the way that seemed to speed things along so hopefully those help you too. They were not a miracle cure but definitely seemed to kick start some healing. But progress is always slow. So slow it's easy to convince yourself it's not happening but try not to analyze it too closely too often. Visible progress happens over weeks (or months), not days. It's brutal.
I'm also someone who really doubted for a long time that this would heal but I think now that it will.
PS Now that the dent is much shallower, I've found that a bit of primer (layered on top of my makeup) softens the edges so it looks even less noticeable. It didn't do much when the dent was bigger but worth a shot.
Does anyone have any positive feedback regarding the atrophy?
I'm starting to get VERY discouraged. On November 5th, it will be 5 months since the kenalog injection. While it does look better, it's still very noticeable. And it's getting to just be down right embarrassing. I'm sick of having an area of thinned skin with jaggid edges. I feel like people at work and my friends keep looking at it. And I know they are thinking "what the heck happened and why isn't it healing?". It's feeling almost humiliating to me.
On Monday I am going to start a series (and be consistent, every 2 weeks) of saline injections. It's my last hope.

Thanks Supernova for your feedback. It's been a very difficult time for me, that's for sure. I'm wondering if I should do the saline or just let it heal on its own? I'm going to talk to my Derm tomorrow. It for sure looks much better but there's still one side with jagged edges and it looks too irregular. One more month to go and it will be 6 months. At almost 30, my skin just doesn't heal like it used to. It takes forever! I've had a lingering bump for a former cystic pimple RIGHT by the atrophy. So that's just adding salt to the wound.
I had a saline injection yesterday. And today I have a bruise. Lovely. Just making that area so much more noticeable. Today was a bad day. Everyone at work I could tell was looking at it. Make up hardly covered it. But then again, I only use a BB cream and mineral powder.
Anyways.....my Derm said I would most likely need NINE treatments. Yes, NINE! I could tell she had pity for me since its been 5 months and has not resolved (this is a Derm at dr. Sires office in Fullerton, not the same place that did the kenalog). What's strange to me is that all of the studies I've read online mention only 4-6 treatments to see full resolution. She only injected 1cc. The studies I've read seem to be injecting more. If she would have injected more I can only imagine what the bruise would look like!
I'm scheduled to have another one in 2 weeks. I'm still weighing it out right now. Part of me what's to continue with the saline injections since the past month has shown NO improvement on its own. But the other part of me is starting to get fed up with this consuming my life and causing me so much stress and worry.
I just want it gone.
I'm sorry Jenna. Is the atrophy better due to the filler and you're just trying to fix the thin skin?
I had to get another round of boletero injections 3 months after my first because it wore off so quickly. I've already dumped $1200 in fillers to fix the atrophy. While it looks much better, who knows how soon I'll have to get more. I can't afford to keep doing this. I hope it fills in on it's own before I have to get the next one.

Hey Hopful503,
Yes, at this point I am trying to fix the thinned skin. The filler seems to have made it level (no hole in my face). I did notice today that one small area did fill in. Not sure if its from the saline or just coincidence. I think I'm going to do a few more saline injections and go from there.
The only other option would be to see a plastic surgeon. But I think I would wait until the one year mark to do that route.
How is yours looking? Did you still have a dent when the boletero wore off?
I don't have the dent because I got boletero again within 3 months of my first treatment. I hope this vial lasts longer. I hope the skin improves for you. I think it will. Just think that red marks can sometimes take months to go away but they always do. I imagine the skin will gradually improve as well. It will just take time.

Gosh I hope your right. I am actually looking into filing a lawsuit. I've spoken with a few lawyers so think I have legal action here

When your 1st round of filler wore off, did it look any better than in the beginning ?
Yes. It only wore off in one area in between my eyes where I have a lot of muscle movement. The dents in my chin stayed filled in.
Oh ok. Yeah mine has stayed filled in pretty well. I'm wondering if I do a series of saline injectins, if the saline will dissolve the filler. My Derm said it shouldn't....but I have a hard time trusting the medical field these days.
And also, I had my filler in June. So I'm sure it's starting to wear off anyways though
I was considering pursuing legal action as well. As recently as last week actually. I emailed a lawyer and got no response. What had the lawyers told you?
You need to contact a mal practice medical lawyer in your area. The first one I spoke to wouldn't take the case. He said I would probably need to call about 10 lawyers to find one. I spoke with one and he wants to see my medical records (the documentation from the kenalog) in order to see if he will want to take the case. As well as photos. I have emailed the med spa that did this to me, but of course I haven't heard back from them. I might snail mail something in writing and see if that works.
I just want to be reimbursed for all the costs involved trying to fix this stupid thing. And to make sure he can't do this to anyone else! He obviously doesn't have e ought experience in kenalog injections.
So I was suppose to have another saline injection yesterday but I canceled my appointment. I couldn't bare the thought of having a bruise again and having EVERYONE stare at it AGAIN, even more than they do now.
I have this feeling that mine might be permanet. It will be 6 months next month on the 5th. And the area still looks like crap.
I made a topic on this as well, but I figure asking here wouldn't hurt:
Does anyone have any experience with the atrophy looking great one part of the day and then sinking in another part of the day? Mine seem to be constantly filling and then sinking...
Edit: also, if I were to go for hyaluronic acid injections/fillers -- would they hinder healing/filling in the atrophy once the filler wears off?
if not, what would be the best filler? juvederm? restylane? belotero?

I feel like mine looks better or worse in certain lighting. Sometimes it's hardly noticeable. Other times like, BAM! So obvious. I'm almost 6 months in and I still have mine, and discoloration.
I've heard that filler does not hinder the healing process. In fact, actually spends it up since hylauronic acid fillers actually stimulate your own collagen.
I have perlane in mine. Perlane is better for deep collagen loss. I have a very large dent. I mean, big time!

I see, thanks for replying -- are you happy with your Perlane injection?

I am VERY happy with it. It filled in the deep dent/Hole great! But you should know, the filler won't help with the thinned skin from the kenalog. It will just fill in the depression. I still have an area of thin skin that is taking FOREVER to go back to normal.

Hmm... what exactly is the difference between thin skin and da epression? What does thin skin look like?
Oh, and glad to hear you being happy with the procedure!

If your depression is pretty deep like how mine was, you won't be able to notice the thinned skin until that area is plumped up. After my swelling from the perlane went down, the hole/pit was gone, but the area still stands out. It almost like that outer most "plump" layer of skin is gone. It's difficult to explain. It's very small now, almost looks like a LARGE box car scar with irregular edges.
I don't know about saline after two years but I would suggest fillers. Ask about boletera. It's temporary so you will have to get more injected every 6 months or so but depending on how bad the indent is bothering you, I would say it's worth it. It's definitely not cheap, unfortunately.
I had a cortisone injection 2 years ago for a cyst between my eyebrows. There is still an indentation there. Would saline injections work on an indent 2 years after it's been injected with cortisone?
Thanks everyone for sharing your stories
You should ask your Derm. It might actually help it. It's worth a shot if it bothers you that much.
I don't know if its coincidence or not, but I've upped my dose of vitamin C to a 1000mg a day and I've seen a pretty big improvement the past few weeks. I go for my third saline injection on Monday. It's slowly looking less noticeable but I'm still self conscious of it.
anyone know whats the safest strength to prevent atrophy for a hypertropic scar?
Who knows. I thought I had .5 injected into mine. But I requested my records and turns out it was only .1! Which is such a small amount. I'm thinking it wasn't diluted enough. I think there's always a chance no matter what the solution amount is.
