@ freedom: I remember you posted here a while back and I jumped to the conclusion that I had GLA/calcium deficiency from your posts, and that this deficiency was the cause of my scarring. I now believe that isn't the case. Turns out my thyroid is out-of-whack, and that can cause all sorts of symptoms that are literally identical to those of GLA deficiency such as thin skin, hair loss and poor healing. Adrenal problems cause these symptoms, as well. Do you know if GLA deficiency and thyroid problems are related in any way?
I'd recommend that people suffering from thin, poor-healing skin and an onset of scarring, spontaneous or otherwise, to get their thyroid and adrenals checked THOROUGHLY by a good doc (TSH, Free T3 and T4, Reverse T3, thyroid antibodies, and 24-hr salivary cortisol) because they could be contributing to your problems. I've also heard a few cases on this website where Accutane use led to thyroid problems, so for the peeps who have taken Accutane it's probably worth looking into...

Personally I have been on Armour Thyroid since this scarring started 6 months ago and well, the scarring has continued and my skin is a million times worse than pre-thyroid medication. This doesn't mean that thyroid medication might not be beneficial for someone else with these skin issues, however. As far as adrenals, I had mine checked via 4 pt. salivary cortisol test and my results were fairly normal. I thought they would be completely whacked out but they weren't. I do think everyone should get this test however, as adrenal function (low or high) can really mess up the immune system and trigger or worsen autoimmunity.
I think that there may be a connection for some people though between the spontaneous scarring and hypothyroid as both seem to be indicative of an underlying autoimmune disorder. Having spoken to many on here with AMVC it seems we all have an issue involving something that triggered the immune system to start attacking the skin, be it Accutane, vitamin a, antibiotics, etc. I know for a fact that my scarring is a manifestation of a mild form of discoid lupus, which is definitely autoimmune. Because vitamin a ramps up the immune system, it makes sense that it triggered my body to attack my skin. I am even now getting similar scarring on my fingertips as I have on my face, with strange indentations, raised hard lumps, circles, lines, and tissue loss. I also have hypertrophic scarring growing on my cheeks that I thought were warts but after researching how discoid lupus can manifest I can see how my "warts" are definitely lupus scars. These raised scars showed up about 2 weeks after stopping vitamin and began to grow exponentially while using the LED lights. My hypertrophic cheek scars look similar to the raised wrinkly scarring on the lady's chin at this website, although mine are less severe (scroll down on the link page to the pictures):

Accutane, being a vitamin a derivative, has definitely been linked to autoimmune diseases, especially Crohn's Disease. So it makes sense that it would trigger this kind of scarring for some susceptible people. Oddly enough, Accutane can be used to treat discoid lupus, so I'm not sure how a person like me would actually end up with a condition that it is meant to treat. And I didn't even take Accutane, just two weeks of vitamin a...
As for GLA's effect on the thyroid, hypothetically speaking if a person were low in GLA it could cause immune system malfunction, widespread inflammation, and worsened immune attack leading to hypothyroidism. It is all linked together. Fatty acids are intimately involved in the autoimmune process. I am still trying to figure out why omega 3's are detrimental however, as they are supposed to be beneficial for autoimmune disease in general.
Anyway, the best plan of action it seems is to get the GLA up, treat the hypothyroid/adrenal imbalance if there is one, treat the autoimmune imbalance, and see where that leads us. There are so many pieces to this puzzle and so many individual factors that it is hard to pin a "cure" but I think doing what I just mentioned will help many here on this thread.
I did check out Accu-cell - great site. I guess I have a new plan on action. Tomorrow I will get some calcium citrate, tonight the ionic stuff will have to do because it's all I have in the house right now and I want to boost my levels and see if it helps me sleep tonight. With the MSM, I will phase it out, perhaps taking a small amount in the morning and that's it. I was taking it throughout the day, along with vitamin C, so I can imagine it was blocking copper and calcium. Zinc isn't getting completely tossed yet but I will limit my dosage to the smallest amount and take it apart from anything with copper. As for a copper supplement, I wonder if liquid chlorophyll will do. I have that and take it and it contains good amounts of copper. I think for vitamin C I will go back to using whole food source like Camu camu powder, since it contains very low amounts of C compared to the sodium ascorbate that I have been mega-dosing on throughout the day, hoping to counteract all these free radicals. I don't want to completely give up any C source because I feel that I am under quite a bit of oxidative stress with this autoimmune issue and I don't want to make things worse in that arena. I can however keep my dose small and limited to once per day.
I haven't taken Primal Defense in awhile, right now I use a different probiotic and also eat cultured veggies...
I think this calcium thing could be the clincher. I can't eat cow dairy for allergy reasons and it's hard to get my hands on raw goat dairy, which I do tolerate quite well. Luckily we are moving out to 4 acres in the mountains tomorrow and are going to be raising our own goats and chickens so soon I will have access to fresh, healthy raw goats milk. I have been relying on greens, chlorella and tahini to meet my calcium needs and perhaps it's not enough. Perhaps I have had an underlying calcium deficiency for awhile and the vitamin a made it worse because it antagonizes calcium and drains it from the body as well. Makes sense.
As for the Lupus, I'm not taking any drugs, especially since it is "subclinical" and I am convinced it is temporary. Conventional drugs definitely cause more trouble than they are worth, and I don't need that in my life right now. Now that I have figured out what is really behind this, I'm approaching it with Traditional Chinese Medicinal herbs along with some other tricks and so far it is working. The past three days I have actually been able to tolerate some sun for the first time in 6 months. Also the joint and muscle pain I was having has gotten much better. Hopefully increasing my copper and calcium along with magnesium and drastically reducing my zinc, vit. C and MSM will help things even more. I'm gonna stick with the EPO as well and hope that over time my skin improves.
Freedom, thanks for posting all of this amazing information! I will keep everyone posted on my progress with this...
Well I hope you find that calcium works for you. Personally I wouldnt take any of the other vits/supps if I was trying to discern a calcium deficiency.
I too was taking small amounts of this and that because I couldnt stand to not be doing something/taking something for my skin. I just never figured out my deficiencies that way, but that is just me, maybe you will have better luck.
I have read that if you are deficient in the one of the major minerals then the minor or trace minerals can interfere when you are trying to remineralize. Take a look at this chart
http://www.vitaminsdiary.com/minerals.htm
look at the need for calcium as opposed to zinc per say or iron.
I had an iron deficiency that wouldnt respond to supplements. For years my iron levels wouldnt go up even on lots of iron supplements, and when I took iron my calcium symptoms (and scaring) got worse. After I took calcium for a while I was able to take iron without setting off my calcium deficiency symptoms and after a few months my iron levels went back up. I should also note that I had a copper deficiency and copper works with calcium and iron. (by the way I too tried liquid chlorophyll for the copper--it really brought out the calcium deficiency symptoms big time. And it this effect on a relative of mine too..hmm?).
Mineral balancing is tricky.
Oh and I think it was you who had the hives? I get those too..are they like welts? Calcium clears this up for me too.
Hypothyroidism supposedly increases the need the for calcium.
Good luck with everything and the move..sounds wonderful!

Well I know that GLA is involved in calcium metabolism and that calcium is involved in thyroid metabolism. I think borage is more recommended for hypothyroid than EPO ( I forget why) I have a slight hypothyroid (supposedly 80% of us do!) so perhaps this is why I noticed a better response from when I switched to borage.
Thanks for reminding me of the hypothyroid connection!
Just some calcium/GLA/ fatty acid stuff..

Abstract
Two separate experiments examining the effects of calcium deficiency on plasma and liver fatty acids in rats were conducted. In Experiment I, weanling male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a calcium-deficient diet with or without the supplementation of 5 or 20 g/kg calcium for 22 days. There were no significant differences in plasma and liver fatty acid distribution between the two calcium-supplemented groups. However, calcium deficiency significantly elevated the levels of 18:3n-6 in plasma and liver cholesteryl esters and liver phospholipids, while it reduced the levels of 20:3n-6 in plasma cholesteryl esters. In Experiment II, weanling rats were fed a calcium-deficient diet supplemented with 5 g/kg calcium for 22 days. After overnight fast, animals were given by intragastric feeding a dose of 4 g/kg body wt ?-linolenic acid concentrate (containing 92% 18:3n-6 ethyl ester), and were killed 22 hr later. The levels of 18:3n-6 were significantly higher, whereas the levels of 20:3n-6 were either not changed or lower than those in calcium-supplemented group. In both experiments, the ratios of
in plasma and liver lipids were significantly reduced in calcium-deficient rats. These results suggest that calcium may play an important and specific role in the process of elongation of 18:3n-6 to 20:3n-6.

here is someone elses story about 03 overload and "cellophane skin"
http://blog.sethroberts.net/2008/09/04/too...h-flaxseed-oil/
Udo Erasmus mentioned this effect when he over consumed flax oil.
hey freedom, did you get all your vitamin deficines checked? I mean i dont think i have thyroid *got it checked 2x times) but maybe the tests couldnt figure it out?
Should i check if i am deficient in anything? How would i know?
yes, I had tests for vitamin/mineral deficiencies. The problem with most of these tests is that they test blood levels of these vits/minerals and the body keeps the blood levels of nutrients tightly controled, plus the blood is merely considered the "highway" for nutrients; "normal" blood levels does not necessarily mean they are getting into the cells and doing their job. ie..My deficiencies of iron and copper were found only when I was tested for levels of their end products--ferritin and ceruloplasmin respectively. My blood levels of copper and iron were normal.
Check out lists online for deficiency symptoms.
The scarring has finally stopped!!!!!!!! Thank god!!! I never thought this misery was going to stop...And I think I now know why I scarred..I noticed a pattern that I didnt scar to much when I hadn't done any weight training. So 2 months back I stopped doing any weight training and VOILA no more scarring! I dont know how long I must stay away from the weight training but Im thinking about trying to weight train here soon to see If I scar..I really love to weight train so I hope its ok
Im so happy right now...I was sure my face was going to be full of scars...I ended up getting about 35 scars but it could have been a lot worse....
This was discovered in 1918. It has been almost 100 yrs and less than 25 documented cases in THE WORLD. Almost all cases had childhood onset.
What are the chances of 25 cases in 100 yrs, yet suddenly all of you on acne.org have this. It is statistically not possible.
Furthermore, Lamarrs doctor said this is very common? Is his doctor smoking crack?
There is no association with accutane and fish oil causing scars. IF ANYTHING OMEGA-3 REDUCES INFLAMTION. Reduction in inflamtion means less tissue damage, thus less scars.
This thread is freaking people out for no good reason. NONE of you have it.
If you really really believe you have adult onset AMVC, then go to a doctor. WHy sit around and let new scars post, then come here and freak out.
But what are the chances of this thread popping up, then all these people having this EXTREMELY RARE disease. In almost 100 yrs, less than 25 documented cases in the world.
Come on now.
Furthermore, If accutane in conjuction with fish oil caused this disease, you can bet thousands of people would have this disorder.
If you research further, you will find that it is not "exactly spontaneous." Do your own research and you will know what I mean by this.
I'm not trying to be rude, by people are freaking out for no good reason. I'm confident that not one of us has this.
This is the ONLY post here that makes sense. The article states this is a disease, not an effect of accuntane.
Please do the homework and research required before jumping to conclusions like this.
It is quite possible that you are seeing after affects of accutane, but to self diagnose a disease is very ignorant.
I am not trying to be rude either, I just wish people would be careful when reading to read ALL the details...
This paragraph doesnt sound like anyone here to me.
"Patients usually do not have facial milia, comedones, papules, or cysts. Patients deny a history of scarring secondary to acne or varicella infection, and they deny the presence of a preceding skin lesion, except for the slight erythema that fades upon scar formation. "If you research further, you will find that it is not "exactly spontaneous." Do your own research and you will know what I mean by this."
i have tried researching this, but could not find the answer. Anyone know what this guy/girl means?
Hi, I've also got some spontaneous scarring that developed a couple months ago! Some little lines that almost form a big triangle shape on my right cheek. I took Accutane about ten years ago. I have been taking high dose vitamin A as well. (I took 25,000IU per day for a couple months and past couple months lowered it to 12,500IU per day.) I am stopping it immediately!
My scarring seemed to have stop a couple months ago though. I think it could be due to the other topicals I am taking.
I recently ordered a DPL infrared LED which is supposed to heal scarring. I am concerned though because IloveUK says that her scarring got worse with the use of an LED.
IloveUK- What type of LED do you think caused your scarring to get worse?!
Around the time the scars formed I also had a weird scab/eruption type thing on my jaw which left a scar on chin/jaw area as well. I thought it could have been a shingles infection at the time but could have been a small case of discoid lupus that came and went. Weird though that if it was discoid lupus that accutane is sometimes prescribed for that.
Also how is everybody's scars doing? If they appeared spontaneously maybe they will go away spontaneously someday??

It sounds like we have something identical going on. I will tell you that my skin got a million times worse when I started using LED's. I used the red LED that I ordered from the LED man. It actually caused to me to start developing what are now obviously lupus lesions that have scarred on my cheeks. I used the infrared feature for twenty seconds on my left cheek one night and after that the skin burned like the worst sunburn ever and that is when the scarring began on that side of my face. Also after using the red alone a few times I would wake up with discoloration that looked like dried blood under my skin. Since it sounds like your skin issue is very similar to mine, I would strongly discourage the use of the lights ESPECIALLY infrared as they did the exact opposite for me - they caused more of these weird line/triangle scars to form out of nowhere and ultimately ruined my skin texture. It has been months since I stopped using them (and I only used them on and off for two weeks) and my skin still has not recovered.
I am also baffled as to how accutane or vitamin a could cause some form of discoid lupus, as it has with us. I also had the mild scabby shingles-type eruption that I now can see is/was a form of discoid lupus. All I can say is that vitamin a is known to ramp up the immune system and I suppose that in a susceptible individual this could cause a form of lupus to develop, perhaps a temporary form.
For now my scarring has stopped although I have these weird patches on my cheeks and chin that look like burned-out lupus lesions and I don't think they will go away without surgical intervention. Like you I am hoping that the linear/triangle shapes I have disappear spontaneously over time since they came on so spontaneously...
i still dont get how i got my scars. I never took accutane or mega dosed on vitamin A.. It literally just appeared out of no where...
You took doxy. I have the leaflet that comes with that prescription right here and it actually lists Lupus as a side effect. I'm not saying you have Lupus, but if it can cause that to occur than any autoimmune manifestation is theoretically possible. If the scars started forming before you took it, you may have already had a mild autoimmune issue or inflammation going on and the doxy was the straw that broke the camel's back. I'm just sayin'...
wow. Well i went back on doxy because i started getting more pimples. I do not know what to do!
Should i get lupus tested? How would i do this? Should just tell me dermatologist that i think i have lupus?
I don't know dude...I can tell you that my lupus blood tests come back negative even though it is obvious that I have it. Apparently that is common with lupus that primarily involves the skin. The next step is a biopsy of the skin, that is the only way to really get an accurate idea of what is going on. Are you still scarring spontaneously?

Thanks for the feedback and sorry to hear about your lesions. I think my skin condition (if it was lupus) was temporary. At the time I had just started primal defense to do an aggressive digestive cleanse (I had some sever acne at the time also.) My face a complete mess. At first it got worse but I have been taking the primal defense (along with extra fiber and lots of veggies) for months now and my skin is now 98% clear. I also started taking transfer factors a month or two later and I think that has also helped my skin/immune system calm down big time. Another thing I was doing at the time is I took copper (2mg) per day to help "balance" the high doses of zinc I was taking at the time. I think that maybe I have copper toxicity issues and maybe the copper might have overloaded my liver and increased my overall toxicity. My immune system might have gone crazy at the time. I only took the copper for about a week.
How soon after you used the infrared LED light did you feel burning? I just used it for the first time for 30 seconds on one side of my face. (Foolish maybe after the warning you gave me, but I do think that whatever was going on was maybe temporary a few months ago.) I am not feeling anything on my face right now nor do I see any redness.

Also were you using any skin care ingredients at the time that might make you more sensitive to light? Retinoids or AHAs? I also just reread the FAQ for the LED and it says to do it on clean skin because lotions that are on the skin may heat up and cause a problem. Did you happen to have any lotions on?
See post below for reply as the edit feature really screwed up for me this time
