Yes my face is also very light sensitive..If i'm out in the sun and its very warm my face gets very easily red especially around my eyes...Iike when I concetrate hard or get embarrased I get quite red..Like the times when I have been at the different doctors office I usually get very red because i get so upset talking about the amvc.
The best recomendation I gave give you is to only wash your face with water, anything else makes the amvc worse..But if you must use make up, I guess a facial wash with non omega 3 ingredients schould be used.
Yes my face react very much to topicals! Well my face doesn't feel like its constantly burning only when I get really upset about something or get really embarrased.
Its hard to tell if I always get scars after I have had those burning sensation, but yes there seems to be a connection. Like I do a lot of weight lifting and especially when I do squats and go hardcore with i; I get really red in my face, I tend to scar the next day..So these days I never go full power on my weight lifting sessions. Also if I eat salmon I tend to scar. And if I use terproline a collagen promoting topical I will scar definetly a few days after usage..Many of my worst scars actually come after using terproline, and the few days I used leds...The yellow leds was the worst for the amvc..I used the yellow leds around my eyes for about a minute for like 2 days after that I got 3 linear scars around my eyes! So yes the leds equals scars for us:(..Its to bad like otherwise my face really glowed when I did the leds!
(
So to be on the safe side to not get the scars follow these steps:
- No fish
- No topicals
- Wash face with water
- Try not to flush to much
-No leds
- No alcohole(not sure about this one)
-Maybe try to get a hold of mertazpine to make this time easier for you
With the help of these I now only tend to scar once a month!
I have read now a little about porphyria and I have a hard time connecting this to our condition? Where have you read about the scars?
Otherwise i'm pretty healthy. The only problem I have these days is that I tend to need to pee in the middle of the night and sometimes in the nights my hands can fall a sleeo!
Look forward to hear from you...
As far as porphyria, there are MANY different kinds and there is a type that causes spontaneous linear scars to appear. With this condition the skin reacts to all visible light and is very fragile, and it does result in scarring. What is going on is that these porphyrins, instead of being eliminated by the body actually build up in the skin and when activated by light they begin an inflammatory toxic reaction in the skin, causing pain and skin breakdown. My derm suggested it as a possibility as well. It can be triggered by prescription drugs or other environmental factors, perhaps Accutane or vitamin a can cause it as they both deeply affect the liver. I'm not saying that this is definitely what we have, but my odd reaction to the LED's is very suggestive of porphyria. At one time during this episode I had very odd reddish urine despite being well hydrated, which is a sign of porphyria as well. I also saw some pictures of people with facial scarring from porphyria and they look very similar to what I see occurring on my face. Also, I wear sunscreen every day yet I notice if I am outside at all those are the days I come home and notice worse scarring. Sunscreen doesn't block the wavelengths that activate porphyrins in the skin. I am being tested to be on the safe side.
As far as the LED's, very sad that they cause more scarring for us. I wonder why this is. I feel almost like a sunburn after I use them, then I notice more scars. It makes me think there is something about our skin that the LED's trigger the skin to breakdown even more. The yellow is supposed to be gentler than the red and even better for collagen and redness...why would it cause more scarring? Just doesn't make sense. And yes, any topical makes me irritate and scar. I do wash with water now, and just use my sunscreen which seems tolerable most of the time. No alcohol for me ever, no fish oils, no fish, nothing. I still haven't tried mirtazapine as I'm waiting on my tests to come back.
Do you think needling will get rid of these scars eventually? I have so many now, and it looks so bad. I have one that came two days ago after the LED's that is deeper than any of my acne scars. So depressing!!
Ilove uk..I also have a few questions..Before getting the scars did you do anything particular?? Like some kind of treatment of anything else that could be bad for the body?? Have you been on accutane?
I have not been on Accutane...I was set go on it a few years ago and chickened out. I ended up taking some vitamin a for two weeks in April which triggered this episode...that's it
I tried an antihistamine and it didn't do anything for me - scarred anyway
after trying to think up logical reasons for why im scarring, i do think i have this too. im sorry for my previous doubt. im on accutane at the moment and wake up some mornings and find i have new pits. they arent massively big or deep, but i can tell they are new and they are noticable. i used LEDs for a bit, but am keeping my skin moist to help the healing process. the scars are still coming though.
the funny thing is that my cheeks seem fine...no new scarring or anything, however my entire forehead seems very suseptable. i cannot think of a logical reason for this at all.
i took antihistamines on and off, but am loading up on the evening primrose oil at the moment, after reading months ago my omega 6 levels may have become non-existant. im really hoping this helps.
im really curious to hear what iseeuk's results are. im really starting to believe in this.

I'll let you know what comes up on the tests. It is baffling to all of us, really. The more I think of it, the more it seems that one thing that we have in common is that we have all taken something that really stressed the liver out. That seems to be the uniting factor. Some of us have taken Accutane, Vitamin a, or had bad reactions to other prescription drugs. So my thinking is that this comes back to the liver somehow.
It's ok that you had doubts, it is hard to believe unless you are going through it. I hope the scarring stays on your forehead and doesn't spread. Perhaps that is an area that has had the most sun damage and so is most susceptible to breakdown? I am noticing that my chin and forehead are virtually free of scarring, although I have always worn a hat and my chin skin seems to be more resilient in general.
I am also taking lots of Evening Primrose, hemp oil, and spirulina (all high in GLA). I have heard l-cysteine helps prevent free radical damage to skin and I am taking that too.
To address what I now strongly now believe is the root cause (the liver) and to test my theory, I purchased a supplement today called LiverCare which is supposed to help clear up even the most serious of liver problems. I'm also backing off on my fat intake for awhile and am going to eat lighter, get back into serious juicing, etc. If I notice my skin getting stronger than I guess there is something to the theory. I think I had a form this a few years ago after taking Cipro and my liver was affected for awhile, although at that time I had no scarring I just had the extreme photosensitivity and burning pain. It went away after a few months on a raw vegan diet.
Mr. Sunshine, did the LED's do anything positive or negative for you? Just curious, as it seems some of us are having very negative experiences which I really can't understand. I don't know why we would be affected negatively unless we have some sort of underlying photosensitivity...

when i used the LEDs, i mainly did them on my cheeks. my skin would heat up quite a bit during the process and like yours felt a bit like a sunburn afterwards. it tightened the skin temporarilly too and havent had any additional scarring there. i used them for up to 40 mins per side. the funny thing is I used the LEDs only on my forehead for a really short period (2-3 mins), so it would be strange if it scarred. it might be a cause though, so im staying away from them. i havent used them in little over a month and im still scarring tho.
i really wish i had more information to give you. if it helps, i often notice the scars after waking up. its hard to tell which ones are new. occasionally some of the scars will become red and then this is gone a few hours/sleep later. then a few days later, others scars will take on this redness.
the skin care regeme im following is quite simple. i wash my face with nizoral anti fungal shampoo and whenever im at home (which is most of the time while im doing my thesis), im keeping my skin moist with vaseline jelly and emu oil.
supplement wise im taking 1500mgs vitamin c, calcium/vitamin d, ha/msm, evening primrose, and some skin care supplements with zinc/magnesium in them. i do drink a lot of green tea, but am cutting down.
are you doing anything else similar?
my forehead does seem to sting a lot more...after showering or being out in the sun...or sometimes even normally. if it truly is inflamation based, i might stick to cold showers.

Wow I only used the LED's for 5 minutes tops for my entire face but my left cheek would burn after about 30 seconds of exposure! It did tighten up nicely which was an effect I liked but then I would notice scars forming the next day and the burning would persist...I never had any burning pain or my forehead or chin from this, only my cheeks...It seems that this burning from the LED's is not necessarily normal though, as I have tested them now on everyone I know (my mom, my husband, my kids, etc.) and even used the infrared with them as well and they reported no sensation whatsoever and they all have normal sensitive skin. When I switched on infrared by accident for just a few seconds on my cheek I had a horrible reaction for days! So just saying it is odd that those of us with this scarring are unusually sensitive to LED's which produce no UV so should not provoke any type of burn at all...
I also mainly notice new scars in the morning, although some of the scars seem to redden as the day goes on but appear only as faint lines in the morning. A few times I have noticed scars showing up after my night shower that definitely weren't there in the morning, so there are no certain trends. I do know that if I feel burning or stinging anywhere it means scars will show up!
I take everything you are taking, although I am cutting out the massive amounts of vit. c that I was taking and trading it in for a plant based vitamin c which is a bit less potent. Just another little test of mine - maybe I was taking too much C and it is throwing off my copper balance or something.
Emu Oil mad me react massively - keep an eye on your tolerance for it. I foundouit that it contains lots of vitamin a and omega 3's, not sure if this is the issue or if I was just allergic but it caused much burning and scarring after I used it...wish I could tolerate it because it seemed like it would be great
Thanks for your input, I think we are getting closer to answers, and for you we might prevent this from getting worse...for now I would keep the showers on the cooler side...

i didnt realise emu oil contains vitamin a....the exact thing im trying to limit. thanks for telling me that. the main reason i started using it was in an attempt to thicken up my skin and reduce the redness/inflammation.. i figured thicker skin might reduce the possibility for more scarring and also make my skin stronger for the scar treatments i undertake in the future.

I'm thinking the test results will come back sometime in the middle or end of this upcoming week.
Yeah this derm was great! He immediately realized that something wasn't right. He was nothing like the other one that I saw..
Be cautious with the emu oil, because it does contain vitamin a, and it is capable of penetrating it deep into the skin - that is why it works so well. I too wanted to thicken up my skin with it but it really did a number on me. I just read today that Tamanu Oil can also thicken up skin and heal wounds - maybe if Emu doesn't work out you can try that? I am sooooo done with topicals at this point that I am definitely done with any experimentation on that front.
Does it sound terrible that I practiced the LED on my family? I had to see if the reaction I had was normal, and I was already sure that it was not. Sure enough, they all tolerated it fine.
For me its nothing about light sensitivity, since I started working at a golf course the 12th of april and I had scarred even before that and didnt notice an increase when I started working there. I dont use sunscreen often...Before and after the start of the amvc I ate quite a lot spinach(high in vit a) and a multivitamin with vit a in it and c. I also supplemented with vit c tablet so I got 200% a day, not including the c in the food intake. Maybe the high doses of vit a and c could have contributed to this??
mr_sunshine: I dont really understand when you say "i often notice the scars after waking up. its hard to tell which ones are new. occasionally some of the scars will become red and then this is gone a few hours/sleep later. then a few days later, others scars will take on this redness."...
Do they get red?? I can't recomend to look at your face in the morning since you can mistake a new amvc scar for a pillow indent..

hey praise...they arent pillow indents, i sleep with my with the back of my head on the pillow and always have ever since applying vaseline on my face before going to sleep. my actual face never touches the pillow.
the reason i know they are new scars is i have very minor scarring on my forehead. more like indented pores and only about 7 have really well defined edges. ive noticed this number increasing and are taking on some funny shapes. yeah some of the scars do go red at varying times and im not sure why this is. some of the older scars go red, some of the newer scars go red, it really depends on the day and the time.
id stop the accutane but im almost done.
Lamarr told me not to take Evening Primrose oil, I would try cutting that out for those taking it.
Really? I wonder why that is? It is rich is GLA, not omega 3. Well, I just started taking it a few days ago so not sure if that would have contributed to any scarring for me. Before that i took Borage Oil...
Anyway, I seem to have turned a corner, if that's possible in a day. For the first night in awhile my skin didn't feel irritated or burned, and I even put my old trusty MSM lotion on a few scars, fully prepared for possible irritation but it didn't happen. In fact today I am having trouble even finding some of the smaller scars that formed a few weeks ago around my mouth, so they have faded. The larger ones are still there on my cheeks however. I did start a few new things yesterday - new quercetin/bromelain supplement, cut out vitamin c powder and taking pure amla powder instead, started taking Noni Juice again (more anti-inflammatory than inbuprofen in some studies), started LiverCare supplement, I also started eating grains again in order to increase my carbohydrate intake (if it is porphyria-related then a high-carbohydrate diet reduces porphyrin production and improves symptoms). All I know is that last night and today my skin doesn't feel irritated at all - I was so confident that I even tested the red led last night and noticed no problems with that whatsoever except for less redness this morning. So, I hope it continues. If I can get myself to a point where I can use the red led's (just red, I'm pretty sure that the yellow is the devil) on a regular basis without irritation I will feel successful. And then, once I am certain that the inflammation is well under control I can think about calling my needling lady and getting some of the larger scars needled.
So that's today's update...I might be onto something....just trying to attack this from all angles possible...liver stress, possible transient porphyria, inflammation, histamine over-reaction. etc.

Good sign that you don't react to light....
As far as the spinach, am I correct in that we are only supposed to be concerned with PRE-FORMED vitamin-A like as in fish oil, fish, milk, eggs, meat, liver etc?
There actually is no vitamin a in spinach or any vegetables, there is beta-carotene, which the body must convert to active vitamin a as needed otherwise it is stored as pigment in the skin and serves to protect the skin from free radical damage. So technically there is no danger in eating lots of veggies because the body cannot become overloaded with vitamin a from that, only beta-carotene, which most people convert poorly anyway from what I have read, that is actually why I took a vitamin a supplement in the first place - I am hypothyroid and that reduces the conversion from carotene to vitamin a in the body. I just want to clarify this, please correct me if I am wrong. You cannot become vitamin a poisoned from vegetable source vitamin a and your body will not convert what is not needed to the active form...So beta-carotene should not be contributing to this AMVC-type scarring
I wasn't intending on returning to this thread as it seems like nothing is really accomplished by dwelling on it, but wanted to share something interesting. Over the past week I have noticed the same type of scarring showing up on my husband as I have appearing all over my face. My husband has never had acne , has always had smooth perfect skin, and has never used a product on his skin in his entire life. He is 32 (two years older than me). I am noticing that he is getting these triangles and weird connected pore shapes on his cheeks as well and I have never seen them on him before, and trust me, I am close enough to him on a regular basis that I would have noticed if they were there before. He did take vitamin a for a few days when I was taking it 5 months ago (he took it to boost his immune system). His skin got a little dry from it after a few days so he stopped and everything seemed fine. He has never taken fish oil. We used the LED lights for a few minutes on him a couple of times last month to test it out and he was fine with it. Now, however, these shapes are showing up and his skin texture seems to be deteriorating. Of course, he hasn't noticed or cared which is great, and I don't care because I love him and he still looks amazing as ever to me. However, the fact that he is getting this now and he hasn't done much of anything to his skin at any point makes me really ponder what the true cause of this is, or maybe even if everyone gets it at a certain point in life (doubt it). And honestly it has made me relax a bit about me own situation because I'm starting to think that there really is no cause/effect/ or answer to this mess, and if there is, we will really never know for sure what it is. As for my status, last week I was suicidal because my skin has gotten so much worse since I posted last, and now I am so numb to it all. If I even look at my face funny I get more scars - I almost liken it to a windshield that starts out with a small crack and over time it just spiders out until the whole thing is cracked. That's pretty much what my face is like now. I had my second appt. with my derm today and he said he is sorry but feels he can't help me with this, and that any drugs they could use to suppress the process would do more damage to my liver which would be the worst thing that he could do. He said I should just do whatever I can naturally to help myself and just keep my skin calm. I have never had a doctor not prescribe something or try to hand out cream, but I could tell that he just felt really sorry for me and was afraid to cause more damage.
Hope you are all well - bye for now

hmm, im sorry this is happening to you. there really isnt too much i think any of us can say.
if i was you, id go on the drugs the derm is reluctant to give you. given you are getting upset over it and have no idea how long you would last, the medication seems good. afterall, the possibility of complications is just that - a possibility. many people take medications that put a strain on the liver. who knows too, the medication may put a stop to it and it may not restart again.
all the best.
I found your post interesting, because I think everyone does have a small degree of scarring. Perhaps you are freaking out over something so minor on your face the derm really doesn't think it severe enough to prescribe anything? Do you have pictures of your scars that are so bad you were suicidal? The only other thing is if you and your husband both get alot of sun, you could be seeing signs of sun damage now that you are aging. Or maybe hard water from your faucets cause a reaction? I have often wondered if the water where I live makes my skin worse, because of course the more I wash my face, the worse it will get. Skin does thin out with age, so scars can show more. I bet you are pretty healthy overall. Probably best not to take any meds.
Hey guys i have several questions regarding this.
One, does only vitamin A cause it? If not what other foods/oils/medications/lotions etc. cause this?
Also, can vitamin A in foods such as carrots and eggs cause it? What oils can cause it or worsen this condition?
I got a random scar on my cheek that looks similar to the scars that have been posted here, but that is the only one i have. I am not saying i have AMVC, but i wud love to have some knowledge about this.
Also, iloveuk, have you ever used any type of corticosteroid creams on your face to control maybe something like seborrheic dermatitis/eczema/rosacea? That can cause thinning of the skin and who knows maybe the scarring?

The problem is that he isn't even sure if the drugs would work, and they could cause more damage since I have a known allergy to the drugs in this class, and am overall way more sensitive than most people to medications in general. I think for now I will hold off. I am finding some peace of mind right now, not sure why though

The scars are mostly shallow except for a raised worm-looking scar that showed up on my right cheek. You all have no idea how good my skin actually looked before this ordeal started so you would probably just say, "so what, just another girl with bad skin". Thanks to a raw foods diet for two years and intensive cleansing I had my skin down to pretty damn flawless, minus some scarring on my temples and some large pores on my cheeks next to my nose. People were mistaking me for my children's sister. Now I have wrinkles, weird lines connecting pores, and orange peel texture everywhere, plus broken capillaries covering most of my face.
My husband does get some sun, I get none, ever. I have been housebound for the past few months and when forced to go out I wear a huge hat and cover my face with a scarf on the way to and from stores, driving etc. especially since this ordeal began because I intuitively have known that my skin has become abnormally sensitive to light. In general I have always been really careful about sun protection. It seems awful coincidental that this "aging" along with burning, red skin would show up in full-force about a week after taking stopping vitamin a supplementation. It just isn't normal aging.
We have a whole-house reverse osmosis system installed here so I think our water is good quality. I'm really not sure what is happening with us, although my skin burns in certain areas constantly and then scars show up in those areas, whereas my husband hasn't felt anything different, I honestly think the only thing we both have in common now is that we both took vit. a for a bit (although I took a lot more than he did) and we both used the led lights recently, he used them only because I asked him to try them to see if his skin burned like mine when he used them (he did not burn btw)
I'm at a loss right now for what is going on, so I'm going to let it be what it is. I'm going to call my needling lady this week and get some smaller scars test needled to see how my skin handles it. I don't have much to lose at this point. Of course the derm said that laser was totally out of the question indefinitely because light definitely is playing a role in the skin breakdown. So, I'm on my own as far as damage control here...
To answer your question, I have never used any steroid creams on my face, ever. I have had idiot doctors prescribe them to me knowing I had rosacea but luckily I am smarter than most doctors so i would just toss the script in the trash every time. After awhile I stopped going to the doctor and healed my skin issues from the inside.
Vitamin A from animal foods (butter, eggs, etc.) could theoretically cause this although unlikely unless one is already overloaded with vit. a from supplements or accutane. Beta-carotene in veggies only converts as needed by the body to active vitamin a and conversion is poor at that so it is virtually impossible for you to become toxic with vitamin a through veggies.
There is speculation that fish oil EFA's and maybe even flax oil can cause this to occur. I never had problems with fish oil prior to taking vit. a, but now I do. I don't know of anything else that can cause this, except for the use of topical retinoids (i.e. retin-a). Some people have also had it occur after using the dermaroller, although these people seem to have taken accutane or used retinoids in the past.

would eating ground flaseed (mixing a tablespoon with milk) cause this? Wat about zinc supplements or biotin supplements? Last but not least, can taking a multivitamin that is high in vitamin A cause it? I have never taken accutane or used retina (or any related products).
I have gotten one scar that randomly came out of no where, but it is pretty big and i have no clue how i got it. If you search through the scar forums, for a topic labeled something as "random scar that spawned on my face" you can see a picture of what i mean. (I look very bad in the photo though, my PIH is terrible, and i look disheveled, so sorry for that)
does wheat and bread contain any vitamin A?
Also, how much vitamin A do we need daily? Is vitamin A the only thing that causes this?
Seriously relaze!!! Stop worrying about YOUR ONE SCAR! If you get another scar out of nowhere, then you can maybe start worrying a little bit. Until then start living your life and one scar is nothing to care about.
Btw yes I actually had light seborric dermatatis for a while, but not any more...Do have this?
Iloveuk...My brother also did some dermarolling on his face a few months ago and then he got this weird really dry skin for like 2 days and then he also got these strange scars!!! But he doesnt get any any more! The thing is when I did my last dermarolling I got also this really strange dry skin and then this strange amvc started...Maybe its some kind of bacteria that spreads???
