having dermabrasion with Dr. Y!

Well, I finally did it!‚  I just flew back home today from NO; I was scheduled with Dr. Y for my dermabrasion on Monday afternoon (1/3/05) but I got so scared that morning that I was thinking of backing out.‚  I had an awful dermabrasion experience about 20 years ago and all of a sudden those memories came rushing back.‚  As it turned out, the only pain I felt (and slight at that) were the 2 shots they gave me on my tush; add the vicodan and I didn't feel a thing through the whole procedure.‚  Dr. Y had 6 interns in the room observing (I think there were 6; my vision was pretty fuzzy by then!) and they were constantly asking questions about the procedure, technique, etc.‚   It was pretty cool because I learned alot just from listening to the dialoque.‚  One of the interns even insisted on driving us back to our hotel after the procedure and arranged for a wheelchair to take me up to my room (I was in no condition to walk at that point---the drugs were great!)‚  And just to reiterate what everyone else has said, Dr. Y and Cassandra are such kind and compassionate people; they were absolutely wonderful.‚  My husband said I chatted at the intern all they way back to the hotel and lectured him about how the world needs more compassionate people in the medical profession like Dr. Y and that he should model himself after this wonderful man (again, the drugs were great).‚

Today is my 7th day and I'm healing pretty quickly; all the new skin has grown in and it just looks like I have a REALLY bad sunburn; I can deal with that (got a few stares at the airport this morning!).‚  I was also able to meet Annabell and Falnhart who were in the office when I went in for dressing changes; that was a nice surprise!

Thanks to all of you who have shared your experiences; it really helped to have some idea of what to expect when I finally went. biggrin.gif

are you saying you did not feel the freezing spray?????? If so, the shots did nothing for me, even though I passed out from them. But for real, I don't the the shots or the valium had much effect on me, I was very alert. I think I just passed out cause I was scared to death.

do ice pick scars have to be deep to get punch floats or can they be shallow? Has anyone used punch floats on shallow ice picks and if so how were the results? I plan on having dermabrasion with Dr. Y this coming summer. I have many shallow ice pick scars, some superficial scars, and a couple of indentations. I also wondered in anyone noticed any loss in tissue or if all the tissue they take off grows back in equal amounts. Did anyone have any success with complete removal of any type of scars and if so what kind. Did anyone notice any additional scarring or uneveness afterwards. Has anyone who has had the procedure for a while experienced any complications with extremely dry skin or noticed it aging faster. I have read that any scar removal procedure should never be performed when acne is still present. I was wondering why Dr. Y would still go ahead with the procedure knowing the risk of additional scaring. sorry for all the questions but I don't want to spend so much money on something that may not work for me. Thanks for your help

OK, I'm breaking out like mad. Actually a tad more than that even.

I can count 45 zits. YES, 45!!!!!!!! All have had the pustules, which mostly go away with washing. I actually have so many zits that my face has become ultra sensitive and I feel like I'm back at the irritation level of day 6-7. It is depressing but I'm gonna try hard to stay positive. Cassandra called me today and just her cheerful voice perked me up. She had that "I know how you feel, it's gonna get better" in her voice. She also called me about 40 minutes after she was supposed to get off from work... what an angel. Anyways Dr. Y called me in some prescriptions. He has me on a steroid for inflamation, minocycline (antibiotic I think), and Duac Gel. I'm hoping this works, I look so bad broken out like this. This is the worst acne break-out I have seen in years! I'll let you guys know how it goes. I guess the good news is it doesn't appear to be the scar producing type acne.

Keep the faith Portlandboy...it will get better.

I'm not a doctor but it seems like maybe the pores get reorganized or something with these procedures.

I had not had a breakout since getting off the tane 17 years ago, but with my recent subcisions I broke out in the treated areas. Nothing really bad but it was strange nonetheless. Cleared up after two weeks or so.

Good that you are talking with Dr. Y and getting the medications you need to treat.

Just stay positive and it should pass as your skin continues to heal. I remember breaking out a bit after my derm too.

Hey buddy, you always seem to crack me up! You cult guy you. Joking.

I myself got a couple zits, maybe a total of 10-15 but all on seprate days. I though this was weird because I hardly got 10 the whole past year. I called Cassandra as well but she assured me this was normal. I talked to my friends mom who is a dermatologist and she assured me they would'nt scar.

Stay strong bud, you'll get through the breakout stage soon enough. Oh yeah, forgot to mention, whenever I stopped using that thick Eucerin palmade stuff on my face the zits stopped coming. Oh yeah, drink lots of aqua  smile.gif

Hi shade, I think I switched around day 18 or 19. I started using the Palmade stuff around day 13 and the breakouts started coming. Now I only use the Palmade stuff at night before going to bed and the Cetaphil with spf 15 during the day.

dang so what'd u use before day 13? Reason i ask is I was under instruction to stop the petroleum jelly after day 7 and then use the eucerin cream (the thickest one) and then switch whenever i felt appropriate. i wish i knew what that was.

For anyone wanting to use the "sunburn" excuse for the redness following dermabrasion, don't. Had a chic ask me today what the deal was with the lobster pigment on my face. She was wondering how the sunburn was so detail, with re: to facial angles.

Whatta prick! If I were in other peoples shoes and saw someone with a extremely red face no way in hell would I ask them whats up with the lobster pigmentation and why are the lines detailed! Geez, some people just dont have normal human courtesy!

How did you respond? I still use the sunburn excuse and I know people are thinking why the fudge does it stop at your jawline. Haha, Im skipping class this week so hopefully in another 5 days I'll be good to go with a little green concealer smile.gif

OK,

The acne explosion I had a couple of days ago is already responding very well to the prescriptions Dr. Y gave me. The inflamation is down like 80% or more. No more pustules. Everything is subsiding. My face no longer feels irritated. Out of the 45 very active zits I had just 2 days ago I only can count 19 now and those are much less inflamed and noticeable.

*phew*

What a #%*#&!^ roller coaster this has been!

Skiing burns are remarkably similar to the dermabrasion redness. You are wearing a turtleneck and glasses! Just say you been up at Vail for a couple of days...you know it has 300 days of sunshine a year!
