Here's another set of punch-related pics. A bit graphic.

Rigel, Do you live in the NO area? I thought that you might since you had a dermabrasion many years ago. If so, did a local NO doctor do you subsicion? I am scheduled for subsicion and cool touch and my only worry is that it will do more harm than good. I have ice pick scarring, and large pores. A few of the ice picks are joined, and this is what the subsicion will be used for. I may also have one punch float. I guess I may need a partial dermabrasion after all of this but I really do not want to go through all of that again.

Amberkat,

Yes, I live in SE Louisiana so New Orleans is about an hour drive for me. I guess that I am fortunate to have found great dermatologists in this area.

I had 2 subcisions and 5 cooltouch treatments from Mary Lupo in New Orleans. She used a needle for the subcisions (nokor perhaps.. I didn't ask but it was a needle). A little improvement from these procedures but not what I was expecting really. Dr. Lupo is very friendly and caring and so is her staff.

I recently had two subcisions with Dr. Philip Loria in Metairie which is a suburb of New Orleans. Dr. Loria is close to Dr. Y's age. He has been a derm for a very long time and is very nice too. He doesn't call it subcision though; he calls it the Loron Procedure. He doesn't use a needle but uses a small, very tiny looking blade. He undermined my boxcars and large icepick scars in two procedures a couple of months apart. I could feel the scar tissue popping as he worked and he even said that I had a tremendous amount of scar tissue he was breaking up. You will have some bruising for 4 to 7 days after the procedure. One week after each subcision, he gets you back in the office and injects the sites with anesthesia to "puff" them up and encourage collagen formation. Most of my boxcars have now been turned into milder looking rolling scars which is an improvement. I still have about three boxcars that I need more work on. I then had a mini-laser peel with him using the Erbium-Yag laser which helps to tighten the skin. I've seen a nice improvement after two months. Nowhere near perfection mind you, but an improvement nonetheless.

Dr. Loria has a website here:

Loron Procedure

I plan to have the Loron Procedure again with Dr. Loria early this year, I will visit Dr. Y about a final dermabrasion to smooth out all the resulting rolling scars that I have. When viewed in the mirror from certain angles the surface area looks much smoother but you can still obviously tell that my skin has been scarred from acne. I'm just not as caved in as before.

My dermabrasion with Dr. Y many years ago did nothing for my enlarged pores and just shallowed out my boxcars. Dr. Y didn't do punch floats back then.

Hope this was helpful.

Rigel,

I have an appt with Lupo for the subsicion. Wish I had done more research before. Maybe I'll try to post a picture to get your opinion as to whether or not the logan technique would work better. (I am in south central LA - about 2 1/2 to 3 hours away.)

Miss Shady,

I think that the dermabrasion that I had is what made my pores so large. They never filled in like they were before after the dermabrasion. I had a partial dermabrasion about 18 years ago by a doctor that was trained by Yarborough. (I had not heard of Yarborough at the time - no internet to research!) The problem was, my skin was probably not even bad enough to do a dermabrasion on. So the dermabrasion did more harm than good in my opinion. New acne breakouts caused the new sensitive skin to scar even more. The derm told me that I was probably finished with acne because I was in my mid 20's. - Ha! I have had one round of accutane(about 7 years ago) and at 44, I still have blackheads/whiteheads maybe not as much as when I was younger - but the gunk still comes out of pores on my nose and some on my cheeks, chin. I use tazorac on a daily basis. IPL treatments also help - 1st series of 5 were done about 2 years ago but I have to go back every 4 months as the results dissipate. I wonder if the collegen will someday just quit rejuvinatinga after all of this.

Anyway, a trained eye can still see the line where the dermabrasion ended. Or maybe a not so trained eye - you can definately see the better skin texture in the areas that were not dermabraded. Now, the skin on your cheeks and nose may naturally get more rugged over the years with increased pore size - the dermabrasion just speed this up. If I would have had severe scarring to start out with, the dermabrasion would have probably been worth it.

Please excuse my spelling - getting ready to step out - no time to check everything.

has anyone been prepared by dr.y with subsicion/exiscion?

amberkat sorry to hear that, don't blame it on the procedure itself.

I could have a damaged paint brush and paint a horrible picture, yet Picasso could paint a masterpiece wiht that same brush.

To sum it all up - I would recommend the procedure for severely scarred skin. If your scars are not severe - I would advise against this procedure because you are not guaranteed improvements and you could end up with more problems and scarring.

I wouldnt say i had severe scarring either, far from it infact, i would say i have mild scarring, but i have a dermabrasion scheduled for 11 weeks time, but amberkat, you have made me really worry now..... Although i'm sure people who have only mild-moderate scarring can also get good results with dermabrasion, take animegirle for exapmle, her scarring wasn't severe and look at her success, plus she has never been bothered with hyperpigmentation left over from the procedure either.

Amberkat i think you maybe just a had a bad experience, maybe the derm that done your dermabrasion was pretty crap at his job, or perhaps he wasn't to experienced.

Wantperfectskin are you getting your dermabrasion in April for definite? is it booked?

Hi Miss Shady,

I want to go the 1st or 2nd week in April. I have not booked my appt for the dermabrasion yet. I was waiting to get paid so I could book my flight and the dermabrasion at the same time. Also, my boss has been gone all week so I have not had a chance to ask for the 2 weeks off. I am sure she will say yes but I just want to be sure. I hope he still has openings.

My punch floats have already been scheduled for March 3rd. I am going to fly to New Orleans in the early AM and fly back home to L.A. the same day. aaaawww I am so dreading the flight home with my "punched" face.

I am so excited and I can not believe it is getting closer and closer. I want to have this all behind me by summertime.

Well, maybe I will see you there. I am a little scared going all the way over there by myself. My boyfriend may or may not go with me. He does not want to fly so we may end up taking the train (a 44 hour trip).

Rigel, I am very interested in this spexial form of subcision. How much does he charge? Do you think it is better than regular subcision? How much improvement have you seen?

emmanuel,

I have sent you a PM so that we don't derail this very good dermabrasion thread with the topic of subcision or the Loron Procedure. Sorry if I have done that already a bit. wink.gif

Did anyone else ask Dr. Y? It's sat. so I can't call him but I wanted to see what you guys thing before I bug him on Monday. Maybe he's already answered the question.

Well i asked Dr.Y about scarring of good skin and he said it would not happen.

Here's my point on it, by now Dr.Y has refined the procedure, i bet before in the years you are talking about it was brutal and probably not done properly.

But people please remember this, dermabrasion has been around before we knew about it here on the board, Dr.y has been doing dermabrasion for years and on people who don't come to this board ever, i mean if he were to make peoples faces worse i don't think he would be in business. Dr.y told me he considers dermabrasion to be the best way to scar revision, be it mild, moderate or severe. If you have not talked to the man or met him you would know he only wants to help us, he's not trying to make money out of this.

Also people will react differently period, some will have an acne break-out some won't, some will hyperpigmentate, some won't you know, everyone is different, everything in life is a gamble.

Dr. Y told me he only does dermabrasions on Mon. and Tues. because you have to return to the office after 24 hrs for a dressing change...then return 48hrs after that for an additional and final dressing change. They aren't open on the weekend to do dressing changes.

Portlandboy, I asked Cassandra last week about treating any cysts or acne that may form. She told me to wait unitl 2 weeks...I can spot treat with bp, but preferred I just wait it out and cleanse. She told me to call if I start getting a lot of breakouts. How many days post derm did your acne appear? Also, I'll be calling Cassandra tomorrow because my husband has cold sores (herpes simplex) on his mouth. I finished the meds, but called the pharmacist for an opinion regarding the situation...they feel strongly that I should take another round of the acyclovir. I'll have Cassandra call in the prescription, and I'll ask her what we should do about any breakouts. Will report back soon biggrin.gif

LeafsFan, I am still red/light brown. The color is close to normal/minor sunburn. It is getting better and better in every week. My face is in best condition when I wake up. It is worst after washing with warm water.

Your face still pink/red?  Mine looks much better in tone but still not good enough to go w/o makeup  eusa_wall.gif  If I were a girl, it would be okay cuz it's like a makeup blush.

Yep, Becky, that's her. I got there late for my first mask change and Becky ended up changing the mask rather than Cassandra since Cassie, as she's called, was helping Dr. Y. with a dermabrasion. She does seem unkind over the phone and at the desk, but she was very careful and apologetic when changing the vigilon. She said she's been working there for about a year.

Cassandra told me that she first met Dr. Y. when she was 11 yrs. old. She said he treated her acne, which explains why she doesn't have acne scars. She then started working for him not long after that. Her son, who's 15 I think, was also treated for acne by Dr. Y. He was prescribed Accutane and also saved from scarring.

I have a question for those of you who've had dermabrasion with Dr. Yarborough or anyone else. How much improvement (%) did you lose between the end of week one and end of week four after the swelling subsided? Say your improvement at day 7 appeared 50-60%, did it drop down to 40/30/20% at day 21 to day 28?

Hey man,

I picked up the same vibes from her as well. Her name is Becky I think (all the ladys that pick up the phone have that new orleans accent) and she's not the friendliest lady over the phone. She was uncourteous to me as well putting me on hold ALL the time and getting upset when my cc card wasnt working. All in All she seemed pretty nice when I met her in person though. Dont let her attitude distract you from your goals if dermabrasion is what you have planned smile.gif

Well, I finally did it! I just flew back home today from NO; I was scheduled with Dr. Y for my dermabrasion on Monday afternoon (1/3/05) but I got so scared that morning that I was thinking of backing out. I had an awful dermabrasion experience about 20 years ago and all of a sudden those memories came rushing back. As it turned out, the only pain I felt (and slight at that) were the 2 shots they gave me on my tush; add the vicodan and I didn't feel a thing through the whole procedure. Dr. Y had 6 interns in the room observing (I think there were 6; my vision was pretty fuzzy by then!) and they were constantly asking questions about the procedure, technique, etc. It was pretty cool because I learned alot just from listening to the dialoque. One of the interns even insisted on driving us back to our hotel after the procedure and arranged for a wheelchair to take me up to my room (I was in no condition to walk at that point---the drugs were great!) And just to reiterate what everyone else has said, Dr. Y and Cassandra are such kind and compassionate people; they were absolutely wonderful. My husband said I chatted at the intern all they way back to the hotel and lectured him about how the world needs more compassionate people in the medical profession like Dr. Y and that he should model himself after this wonderful man (again, the drugs were great).

Today is my 7th day and I'm healing pretty quickly; all the new skin has grown in and it just looks like I have a REALLY bad sunburn; I can deal with that (got a few stares at the airport this morning!). I was also able to meet Annabell and Falnhart who were in the office when I went in for dressing changes; that was a nice surprise!

Thanks to all of you who have shared your experiences; it really helped to have some idea of what to expect when I finally went. biggrin.gif
