My acne is mild/moderate, need to get it under control before I start dermarolling.a few years after accutane my acne came back but only moderate with occasional cysts. i have not washed my face with any type of soap or cleanser in about a month and my face has never been this clear except for when i finished accutane. i read an interesting article about how washing you face with water only allows your skin to produce its natural oils. i have a friend who had bad cystic acne for years and tried everything and went to almost every derm in the area and the only thing that worked for him was this method.. i swear by it.. i would try it out if i was u.. u will notice pretty soon if its working, so if its not then its no big loss...
What about moisturizer then? I use the cleanser to wash off the moisturizing creme.
Can't really do without moisturizer after accutane, atleast not for a while.

I tried not washing before. My skin looked pretty bad, i might give it another go though, try it for longer. The problem is initial breakouts though.
I don't have much acne around the areas where I have the most scarring, maybe I could roll there while still having some acne elsewhere.
Cheers! I'm finally done reading through everything!
Firstly thank you so much Lamarr! You bring hope to people like us. I've been dealing with acne and scars for the past 11 years and have already resigned to fate that I would have to live with them for the rest of my life till I saw this. I've actually found out about dermarolling from another forum and gone for two sessions (first was with 0.5mm roller, second with 1mm roller) with a home-based beautician in my country. I then decided to do more research and stumbled upon this thread.
Now I've decided to do it myself, cause I don't think the lady does thorough disinfection. Furthermore, she waits only 5 minutes for the numbing cream to take effect, and the rolling always hurts like hell!
So, I've ordered Dr Roller 1.5mm and Emla cream from ebay, and in the process of ordering the LED from Ledman. I'm thinking of getting the "3-in-1" red/infra/yellow LED so will use the red/infra for
25 mins followed by the yellow for 7-9 mins as you mentioned. I can't get hibicleanse in my country, so I've decided to disinfect the roller and my face with rubbing alcohol, and wash my face with mild cleanser as some people are doing. Do let me know if these are correct!
I'm still quite confused with the rolling itself though.
I came across this Dr Roller video on youtube: [Removed]
It mentioned that we should roll horizontally, vertically and diagonally 4 times each and we should not apply too much pressure on the roller. I understand that the roller may be of shorter length, but she does not seem to have any bleeding/swelling.
Are we supposed to achieve something similar to these two video: [Removed] and [Removed]
I understand we are supposed to apply pressure till the whole of the needles on the roller are in our skin, but did you bleed this badly? It looks scary! Also, do you follow the "4 times per direction" instruction?
Thank you once again, and I hope I'm not repeating some of the questions others have already asked!
Also, I never knew we can't use topical A if already on accutane/nimegen (as known in my country). I've been applying Stieva-A every 3 nights, guess I should stop that! Will just use SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex that my doctor has given me to boost collagen growth since it has been working fine for me so far.
P.S Sorry for the long post!
I just wanted to add in my opinion about bleeding since it is an unusual one.
I've used a 1.5 dermaroller and rejuvastamp about 5 times total now and haven't bled a single time. I know people will think it is because I didn't roll hard enough, but I swear I did. Especially with the stamp - I don't think there is anyway I could have pushed harder I was using so much force. I even stretched the skin first and then pushed with all of my might and still no bleeding (btw I only roll on my cheeks).
My opinion is that everyone's skin is a little different so not everyone will bleed. I even had individual needling done by a derm and I barely bled for that. So, if you don't bleed, it may be that you didn't use enough force, but maybe you are just one of the rare people who won't bleed with a 1.5mm.

yea i would def use moisturizer while on accutane. im not sure how long after it takes ur skin to get back to normal. i was on accutane about 4 years ago.. i dont use any moisturizer or wash and i never break out. only when i start washing my face and paying atention to it. i just wash my face with water when im in the shower, use a scrub but only on my nose for black heads and then wash my face with cold water after the gym and before i go to bed to close my pores up.. works well for me. i guess everyone just has to do what works best for them.. i do use moistuizer for like a week after i rol though..

well if it doesnt work for you then leave it.. i do notice though that my skin is less oily when i dont wash.. this is becasue when u wash ur face ur skin starts producing even more oil to compensate for the oil u just washed off.. makes sense..
I would estimate about 30-40% improvement. The most improvement I have seen is on some of the smaller scars - the deeper ones are ever so slightly better but it seems like they will take more time. I am also excited to add a red LED the next time I roll - hopefully it will help with the healing process!

hey lillya, how many times have you rolled? sorry if this has been mentioned already..

Hey lamarr. Sorry to bother you, I just have one question. I recently had deep chemical peel , and I am still red. I saw you are promoting led therapy as a good healer, so I got interested to buy the led from the led man. Can you please tell me is this the one to go for Triple 660/880/590 Array
Thanx , Marko
Thank you so much for this thread Lamarr. It is really fantastic and I've learnt heaps!
I've used the dermaroller a couple of times, and have just recently finally got a hold of some diabetic needles. I used them for the first time the other day and they are quite tricky to use! I wasn't sure how deep to go, and how many times. Obviously the more the better, but I didn't want to create some massive scab and add to the whole down time. Does anyone have any tips?
Also, I just posted the same question in a different thread, but it seems that some of you are avoiding Retin A as it might cause more scarring. Is it just tretinoin that is the potential problem, or is it all forms of vit a, including retinyl palmitate?
just thought id post this.. i know there are probably loads of threads regarding celebs and their skin, but i watched employee of the month last night on tv and dane cook has some pretty bad scarring.. i never really knew he had acne scars. considering he was probably wearing loads of makeup and also had some pretty thick facial hair going on you could still see his scars pretty well. just thought id share..
so its been about a month since my secone roll and my face looks pretty good! i should have taken pics, but for some reason i didnt.. anyway, my skin looks much better in certain lighting. For example I used to hate looking in the mirror at the gym and now I can without getting depressed. I would say my skin has improved by about 40-50% in the 2 times I have rolled!! Been taking lots and lots of vitamin C, pineapple bromelain, copper, collagen tablets and pretty much anything oral that promotes healing. Havnt been using my LEDs as much as I would like to, and I use no topicals.
The key is to really be aggressive when you roll. I spent about 15 on each area if not more going at it from all different angles. My face looked pretty bad for about a week. And Im not gonna lie, it hurt when doing it..
Best of luck to everybody!! il keep posting my progess..

Eric, great to hear of your positive progress!!
A quick question, what is the "pineapple bromelain" you are using,
its purpose??? and perhaps the brand??
thanks, best wishes, scoobie
Just did my first roll today, only targeted a small portion of my right cheek. It encompasses 2 pitted scars with an underlying rolling scar. I only used a 1mm dermaroller. This is more of a trial than anything, I don't want to jump into this too quickly; I want to see how my skin reacts to it first.
There wasn't much pain, just minor stings. There were a few drops of blood and now the area is very red.
I also purchased a 1.5mm, so I will be using next time if I don't see any problems from this roll.
My two biggest concerns are infection and further scarring, I think I have the former under control and I think I can prevent further scarring by taking baby steps. I will purchase a LED light if this roll is okay.
Err I needled a small boxcar scar a week ago for the first time and I'm worried I might have worsened it.. I only had 12mm/31gauge diabetic needles left over from saline injections but I got in the scar at about 2mm, couldn't have been deeper than 3-4mm at the very most. I was very precise (from years of saline injections, I'm a surgeon with that thing) .. I gently jabbed it about 10-15 times all within the scar and the border, clear cut up and down motions at a 90 degree angel. There was no pain or popping noises, a nice pool of blood though & immediate swelling which of course made the scar disappear. Since the swelling has gone down these days the scar looks like it increased in width and it looks a drop deeper! It's also red but that's fading slowly.. I'm devastated... I wanted this to work for me more than anything..N S0oo many people seem to do great with it..And I think combining the red light/needling is genius.. the light should be used after all scar procedures!... I'm not gonna quit on this like I do on everything else because I don't get instant results but to see this scar deeper is freaking me out... but we'll see... I'm hoping things change. How many of you guys had this happen to you and it healed back?
I'm using my own 14% vitamin C serum that I make fresh using Ferulic acid/ L Absorbic Acid/Vitamin E (you guys need to be careful with store bought oxidized vitamin c, this can really f up your skin) I just got my red light yesterday and used it today for the first time.. It's only 660 not 880, I hope thats enough to do somethingg. How far should this be from my face because I've heard diff things? - & it should only be used on clean skin (no makeup-topicals, lotion) right?

yes, scars can look deeper before they get better. Like you, about a week after needling, this one scar on my forehead looked deeper, then filled in after a few weeks. I think you should use the diabetic lancets that are much shorter though, they're easier to control, because you also want to hit it at different angles, not just straight up and down (IMO).
Thanks smoothmove, ughh I reallyy hope it fills in a couple weeks.. this thing looks huge now. Maybe it's because I didn't scab? I just ordered new needles the other day (5mm lancets) They came yesterday and they're super small, Do you guys use these without attaching them to an actual syringe for support?

i only needle certain scars on my face, a few at a time because i don't want 10-15 red dots all over my face, but a few nights ago i went to town on this one ice pick on my upper cheek that hasn't responded at all to my past needling of it. normally i will just poke the inside of the scar itself, but i decided to go very slightly outside the edge of the scar when i pulled it tight. after 2 pokes i realized that this was also scar tissue that was probably the reason why the scar continued to be held down. every single poke was a pop/crunch followed by huge drops of blood. the scar ended up changing its shape immediately. i was scared at first because it was such a different shape than i was used to, wider and deeper, but i also realized that this had to be done to change the shape of the scar and it will get better over time. it has since changed from a sort of vertical icepick to a round saucer shape. will report back again in a few weeks.
