My whole face has been really irritated more lately. I don't think it's from the anti-wrinkle cream I mentioned above because I only spot treated. I have been washing with oatmeal thinking that might calm it, but it doesn't. I guess the Mario Badescu cleanser is too harsh for my skin.I think I am going to try MSM pills next. It can be bought at a drugstore and it's cheap. I had some MSM pills in the past, but it had glucosamine in it and that's made from shellfish, and I avoid that.
" MSM is a naturally-occurring source of organic sulfur that is easily absorbed and used by the body. Taken up from the soil by plants, MSM found in foods is largely lost during food processing, storage and cooking.
MSM supports organ and joint function by donating sulfur for maintenance of healthy connective tissue. MSM helps keep skin, hair and nails healthy by donating sulfur for production of keratin, a fibrous protein. "
It helps with inflammation and I clearly have a problem with that.
WOW - I just finished reading your log and looking at all of your pictures, and you have made INCREDIBLE progress! You should be SO proud of yourself!! =D I just noticed that you are going to try MSM next. I bought a bottle of MSM a couple of months ago, but I haven't had the guts to try it yet... I've read many stories about the initial breakout from the detoxing effect, so I wanted to wait until the semester was over to try it. Please keep us updated if you decide to start MSM! But, wow wow wow, I still can't believe the progress your skin has made since 2007, it's seriously crazy, and very inspiring! I wish you the best of luck with your skin!!! Take care,
- Jayne

Aw, thank you so much :). It really means a lot to hear that because I have been feeling down about my skin with all this irritation. Yes, I have read about the breakout also. I don't think any of the threads I have read have people who went through the "detox". They just stopped taking it. I heard that some people can't tolerate the sulfur and that's how some people can break out after eating onions or garlic, I forget which food. The initial breakout doesn't scare me anymore. I am willing to try anything to help my inflammation. I have tried so many vitamins/minerals that I'm willing to add MSM to the list too haha. Oh, I sure will be updating with the MSM. I should be getting some on Monday.

Well, I have been taking NAC for about 2 months now, which is also a naturally occuring sulpher, and I eat a tonne of garlic and onions so I have a feeling MSM should be just fine.. I have read on other beauty forums (hair forums) people who started taking MSM for their hair, and they got an initial breakout, but kept taking it, and their skin became even better then before taking it.. That's what I hope happens to us! =] I DID take 2, 500mg pills the first day I bought them, without doing any reading about the initial breakout, and my skin didn't break out the next day, in fact I remember thinking that it was very calm and not flushed looking the next day (which could have NOTHING to do with MSM, but atleast nothing BAD happened!). I'll let you know what happens when I start with the MSM in a few weeks!

Hm, I have never heard of NAC. Google says N-Acetyl-Cysteine? I have a problem too with flushing skin. It is getting really annoying and painful. Ok. I'll be glad to hear about your review with it :).

Yep, N-Acetyl Cysteine! I've been taking it since I've been off birth control to help and boost my liver function so that the synthetic hormones get excreted (hopefully) faster. I also took alpha lipoic acid to neutralize any free radicals. It's been over 3 months, and each month my skin shows improvement. I've also had to stick to a VERY clean diet. My fiance and I went organic (except meats, which are so expensive! Our weekly groceries are already above $125 a week!), and I've stopped eating anything that spikes my blood sugar. Basically been sticking to an anti-inflammatory, low GI, high fiber diet.. and exercising regularly. It started as a way to keep my skin from developing cystic acne again once I stopped birth control, but it's turned into a lifestyle now, and I know that my body is a lot healthier, even if it doesn't totally show on my face yet (but getting there!).

Ah, yeah, that will be a problem for me. The dreaded birth control hinders me from trying other things too. Things that say they will "cleanse" is a no no for me. I just use the birth control pills for my skin and to skip my period. When I'm off it, I get bad PMS zits. I know I'll be off it one day and will have to deal with that break out.
Yeah, that's the kind of diet I have been following too. It's so much easier now. I never even crave sugar, so that's a plus. The healthy diet is a way to think positive about having acne for me. Without changing my diet for my acne, I bet I would still be eating junk food and processed foods :/. Future blessing in disguise I guess. Oh and I keep telling myself that I've never seen a 60 year old man with acne, so there's hope haha.
Starting 1,000 mg of MSM today...
I actually took out my bottle of MSM last night and seriously contimplating starting it.. for the fact that it may help with inflammation... But... I'm just not sure yet! I've done a lot of research, but I still feel that I could do more research on it. What's holding me back is that it does cleanse/detox your cells, and I already know my liver is overloaded... I'm just wondering if it would exasperate things? I'll have to do some more research, but I have my last final exam tomorrow, and it's on the CRAPPIEST, more horendous and boring subject; financial accounting... so I must go. Good luck with starting MSM! Can't wait for updates!

I'd do it when you feel the safest, as in on break or what you said earlier. I brought up how I am starting MSM on another forum and a girl told me my skin will get worse and then better. She took it for her hair. She also took biotin along with it, and that is known to cause breakouts in some people also, so we'll see. I have tried every pill/vitamin. I think MSM is the last thing ha. I have even tried overdosing on B5 and that did nothing and got sick of all those pills. I am stocked up on BP 10% and sulfur spot treatments 😛 just in case. Oh and I heard another tip is to drink a lot of water when starting MSM because the ~toxins~ need something to grab onto when leaving so it'll lessen breakouts? Idk. I'll just remember to drink more.

I seriously should be studying, but instead I'm doing more reading on MSM :naughty: AHH! I also read that you have to drink a lot of water with it, and this might help reduce the breakouts and headaches associated with starting msm.. You know what? I'm going to take one right now! What dosage are you staring off at? I've read that 500mg is a good start, and then up it by 500 every week (or if you haven't seen any side effects). My msm is by Flora, and each pill is 1000mg/1g.. it says on the bottle take 3x daily, but I'll keep it at 1g for a week or two. Well, I'm going to start taking them tonight, so I'll let you know what goes on from here on out!
*edit - just took my first 1000mg pill! Not really too nervous, because I DID take msm for one day when I first bought it, and didn't see anything bad happen, and tomorrow IS my last day of school, so... why not!
Must study NOW!
🙂

Haha, I was really eager too. There's so much reading on something you can do. Mine was 1000 mg per pill. I really don't plan on going any higher. Yeah, I read the 500 mg thing too. Mine is by Vitaplus and also says 3x a day, but I won't do that. Good luck 🙂
I didn't get a reaction from the hydroquinone, so that's good. Normally people say their skin gets red, irritated and itchy. Oh and even though it hasn't even been a week, I haven't had any detox breakouts from the MSM. However, the first day I took it, I swore I felt two huge zits popping up, but it went away overnight from sulfur spot treatment.
I got a reaction from the hydroquinone. I looked in the mirror yesterday and to my surprise, the spot I was treating was bright red! It seemed fine for those two days. It looks like a burn. It doesn't itch or feel irritated at all. I was told that irritation/redness can occur, but it shows up more on me since I'm pale. I don't know that much about hydroquinone, so I can't say if it's supposed to happen. I am going to cut it out until the redness subsides.
I am able to see the red marks so clearly, but that's a good thing because it is making me notice how many less there are now! It was a sigh of relief realizing that, especially what I have come from. I am going to go back to spot treating it with a retinoid from Neutrogena.
i mean for acne cause of the high amount of vitamins and how it goes straight to the core with 3 times the mount of actually eating carrots, one more thing do you always eat protein first? i heard this from dr perricone i dont know if its true tho
If you want vitamin A, drink the carrot juice. I personally never drank more than a sip or know much about it. I wouldn't look to carrot juice for a cure though.
No, I don't follow food combining anymore. I stop bothering with that. My diet is mostly cutting out things I'm allergic to and the top foods connected to acne like dairy. I do remember pericone writing about that though.
I made a discovery last night. I had some dark purple, almost bruise like coloring, marks on my face. I noticed that the marks would never heal. I saw a little black head dot inside one of them and squeezed the gunk out. It was not an easy thing to do, ouch. In the past, I had gunk under a big purple mark too. That one was bad. This one had an oil plug. No wonder it was wasn't healing. It can't heal if it has something in it. The purple color was from the blood pooling under my skin. I tried another purple mark and another plug came out. Hopefully, they'll heal now.
Starting to take 2,000 mg (2 grams) of MSM tomorrow. It would be 1 week with 1,000 mg.
Oh and I have read raves about a niacinamide toner. I purchased some niacinamide online and should be getting it soon. I actually do have niacin gel, but I'm pretty sure the gel was giving me little tiny bumps on my face. It annoyed me, so I stopped it.
The recipe for this toner is:
1.5 teaspoons in 4 oz witch hazel
I don't remember if my skin liked witch hazel, but I'll try it out.
If anyone is confused at me talking about different products, this is what I am currently using on my face:
To wash: powdered buttermilk (I don't wear makeup btw)
After: I pat my skin dry with a microfiber cloth. If I let my skin air dry, it seems more irritated.
Moisturizer: Face Reality Cranberry Cream (I am using it on half my face because I stopped using it for awhile after a big break out from another product. I normally avoid moisturizers because everything breaks me out, so I'm starting slow again.)
Spot treatment: Sulfur 10% and bp 10%. Hydrocortisone only if it's a huge under ground pimple forming.
For red marks: Neutrogena anti-wrinkle cream with retinoid. I use it to spot treat my red marks, not all over.
Pills: Orthotricyclen Lo, probiotic, MSM and zinc.
I got woken up today by a pulsing pain on my face! It was this pimple that felt like a needle being put into my skin. It was that painful. I put some Bactine on it because it has a numbing agent in it and it stopped pulsing. I have another pimple forming on my cheek. I have a feeling it will turn into a huge pimple. I haven't had a huge cystic pimple in a long time, so maybe it's from MSM.
I made my niacinamide toner today. I used water instead of witch hazel.
Here is one side of my face. The other one has a couple break outs, maybe from trying the Cranberry Cream on that side or it's from the MSM, but in this you can see how I am able to actually count the red marks instead of giving up after 50 of them. Oh and you can see the huge cystic pimple forming on the top of my cheek. I think I stopped it in its tracks, but it still is showing. Some of the dots are popped small pimples from last night. They were annoying me.
I am going to stop the niacin toner. It looks like it making my skin ultra sensitive like it's sun burned. Other than that, I think my skin is doing fine. The breakouts I had on the right side of my face went away.
Monday I start 3,000 mg of MSM. I doubt I will go higher than that. 3 grams is the normal range people take for beauty purposes.
I'm surprised I'm not breaking out on the sides of my chin/under my mouth. I would always get pimples there. I've even ate way too much sugar than I normally do. I did get that big cystic pimple on the side of my face though. It died down at least.
I broke out. I felt a pimple forming last night. It's annoying how you can feel this sting/pinch on your face when it's happening. It's a pimple forming on my chin. I'm guessing it's from all the sugar I had last week. I'm going to cut out sweets this week.
So, right now I have Finacea and Mychelle's apple brightening peel coming in the mail. I just want the peel to be my exfoliator. I might not even touch the peel for awhile since my skin is sensitive.
I really need to find a moisturizer, badly. Today, I went into the skin care aisle at Walgreens and never realized how many moisturizers there are to choose from. SO MANY and so many different colors.. I felt really overwhelmed. I just go there to pick up some bp 10%, nothing else.
I might try St. Ive's green tea cleanser, but we'll see. I just want my skin to feel moisturizedand not so irritated.
How strange. I am starting to break out on the apple of my cheeks and have some stingers coming up on my chin. I say stingers because they don't seem to have a bump yet, they just sting to the touch which means cystic pimple. Ouch. It's not like I have changed my products. The only thing that is different is the MSM. I guess this is my breakout that everyone gets? Maybe it's because I was slacking on the water.
I caved and bought oil free moisturizer sensitive skin from Neutrogena. I have a feeling it will break me out, so I'm just going to start slow and not put it all over my face. I'll start with my forehead. I don't have big hopes for it. I have my receipt anyways.
