hey guys, im new to acne.org, names Anthony from NJ but have lurked the forums for a while.

a little backstory on my acne problems: when i was about 16 i started getting mild acne just a few red bumps but recently (age 17-20) my acne has been going nuts. big white pustules with multiple white heads and really red and inflamed. for a while i just used over the counter face wash then i saw my first dermatologist (age 17). she gave me aczone for morning and Ziana gel for night time. it sort of worked but then got MUCH worse when i was around 19(pics attached) this was defiantly the low point in my entire life. i didnt wanna leave the house, didnt wanna go to work, missed so many opportunities to just live my life. and after all the searching ive neaver seen anyone with acne like mine with such large white pustules.

so i was so fed up i got a new dermatologist and he prescribed me Doxycyline Hyclate 100mg(2 daily), Clindamycn Phosphate/BP gel for night spot treatment and Acuwash gentle cleanser in Feb 2015.

After the first month of no change my skin made a 180! my skin started to clear rapidly until the point where i went over 3 weeks without a new breakout!! this was the best time of my life.

so in May of 2015 i went back to the dermatologist for my 3 month check and he reduced my Doxycycline to 1 pill a day. the change wasnt so bad but i did break out a few times over the next couple of months with tiny whiteheads with no red inflammation. but overall my skin was almost flawless

but then i started noticing these small white/skin colored bumps under the corners of my mouth/chin they were under the surface of my skin but couldnt notice them unless i flexed my face and put my mouth wide open. and they also seemed to turn directly into whiteheads? and if u squeezed them a small amount of white would come out and the bump would be gone?????

so my face was clear but there was alot of these almost invisible little bumps on my chin/under mouth area.............

and then i went to maryland on a tuna trip on July 19-22 and since then its been hell. im still on my 1 a day doxy and stuff and im experiencing the worst month of my skin since Feb before i started the Doxy????? it seems like all those small bumps have exploded into red inflamed whiteheads!!!! its like an acne sneak attack!!!!!!!! after i think the 2 or three pimples are done and gone and just red marks starting to fade 2 more nasty white heads form!!! and FYI i only get acne on my chin and around my mouth. thats it.

i went back to the Derm for my 6 month and he said to just keep going 1 a day or 1 every other day on Aug 4th. at then i thought it was just the trip eating alot of crap and gluten(with seems to be directly related to my breakouts??)

is it losing its effectiveness? should i go back soon if this doesnt clear up by september? and the little bumps seem to be much less in numbers since these recent breakouts?????

my main question is has anyone else had this kind of just sheer drop in effectiveness in Doxycycline? my doctor gave me enough pills to last until november. should i just wait out the rest of august and then go back if nothing changes?? should i just request Accutane if it doesnt get better? and is there a way i can get rid of those little white clogged pores of whatever!?!?!

my new breakouts are not AS bad as before my Doxy but are still bad. pics are of before Doxy and Clamindamycin

Im just so don with this constant battle with acne, ive changed my diet (gluten and dairy free), and my lifestyle to fight this and im at my breaking point. im at the point in my life where im almost done with college (criminal justice major) and am gunna start applying to police departments and Acne is really lowering my confidence to almost ZERO....sorry for the long post im just at my end.................

Yup. Doxycycline is not a good long-term acne solution. Like other antibiotics, it is well documented that bacterial resistance will kick in when used frequently or over long periods of time. Furthermore, by using it (and other antibiotics) a lot it will mess up your gut flora and your body's ability to take in nutrients, which may worsen acne.

Also note that doxycycline does not have ANY ability to prevent acne over time (in other words, when you stop taking it, it will all come back.) This is because it simply kills all the bacteria, but it will grow back when you stop taking it. All in all, not a good long-term acne solution.

By the way, re: diet -- I tried a bunch of different changes to my diet to help with my acne, and I found that the most effective thing to cut from my diet was SUGAR.

As stated it does lose its effectiveness due to bacteria resistance. Doxy is also very anti inflamatory and should help in that way even if the bacteria has grown resitance. They should have put you on retin-a or something while you were taking the doxy so that when the doxy quit working the other medication could have taken over.

You have to be carefull with the antibacterials. They are not a long term solution for most. I was placed on Doxy and Keteconozole and after a month I got extremely bad stomach issues that lasted a couple years.

Hi Anthony. Yes antibiotic resistence is a very real thing. Definitely go back to your derm and ask for a retinoid and an antimicrobial (BP or topical antibitoic). I'm not sre if accutane is the best bet as your acne at present is very mild and in terms of your career choice, it can have some very real permanent side effects that can affect your performance.

Good Luck and keep us posted

BTW, i live in Howell too! It's weird to see another member from this neck of the woods.
