My doctor prescribed me duac gel for some mild spots, I've only used it once at night and woke up to red skin all over my cheeks.

It's the third day and although the redness has decreased it hasn't gone away completely.

Can anyone tell me how long will it take for my skin to calm down, it's also quite got still and very irritated

and also any tips to help with medication redness?

Thanks

Hi :)

I tried to use Duac but had a reaction to it (red skin that was really itchy). I stopped using it and I think it took a few days for the itching to subside and then a week for the redness to completely go.

All the best :)

Most likely it's the benzoyl peroxide (BPO) in the clindamycin/BPO combination (the ingredients in the Duac gel) that is causing the redness.

I've used Benzaclin before, and I believe Duac has the same concentration of BPO (5%). It is very drying, so make sure you are using a non-comedogenic moisturiser. I use Cliniderm soothing cream, but CeraVe works well too.

If your skin has not adjusted to BPO side effects before you began using Duac, it may take 2 weeks or more for your skin to adapt.

In rare cases, redness may indicate an allergy to BPO, but a mild discoloration in the initial stage is to be expected in nearly every case.

Good luck!

Let your doctor know about the issue next time you visit. The other commenters are right that it could take a little time to adapt to the bpo. The acne.org regimen uses a lower strength 2.5% bpo.

If you try persevering or try a 2.5% bpo and still have problems with redness consider taking a look at epiology skincare as a complementary product.
