Dear All,

I've been reading all your posts since the beginning of the topic. I actually haven't started the tane yet but I'm planning on starting in April. I need your advice please. I know that most of you have been experiencing the initial breakout. Can I just say that Im amazed, as youve been dealing with it so well. Despite the initial breakout you still leave your houses, see your friends etc. Im due to start a new job in April and I really dont know what to do. Is starting the tane and a new job at the same time a good idea? I wont be able to call in sick when my face gets all messed up.

I would really appreciate your advice.

Thanks and sorry for posting my question here. I know I havent started the tane yet but I figured that I need advice from people who are dealing with the initial breakout and side effects.

Hey and welcome

It soooo hard to say as far as what is the best time to start a med like tane

Everyone reacts to tane differently and everyone doesnt have an IB...

My acne was mild and persistant and I was HOPING because i started low dose accutane and had been using retin-a for 10yrs as well as BP daily

I would somehow bypass the IB stage but that wasn't the case

I also had 3 separate IB phases as I increased my dose

My Dr said it would happen in the first 14 days or not at all but that was COMPLETELY untrue!

Its hard to say if you will even have an IB and when that will be

For some it is right away or in 2 weeks..Ive heard of some getting hit at week 4-5

There is no good time to start tane...winter its tough because of the dry heat..in the summer it stinks because of the sun sensitivity

Im a SAHM and i am thankful I dont have to worry about going into work daily etc

I have to be honest that I normally handle meds very well with little to NO side effects and was hoping tane would be the same

Ive experienced over the last 4 mnths lethargy, joint pain, DRY eyes, DRY lips, DRY mouth, DRY patches on arms/hands.

To be completely honest, It has really been a more trying experience than i thought it would be

I have 2-3 mnths left though..and am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and am hoping it will all be worth it!

as many many people say after finishing tane

I often feel a little down about the side effects of tane

Im guilty of staying home on weekends or cancelling plans because of the IB/side effects

BUT what I was doing for the years before tane and trying every topical out there as well as antibiotics wasnt working

Tane wont be forever...and it is getting better!

GL to you!

any other specific questions..LMK

Kim

Dear Kim,

Thank you for your kind words and advice.

Tane is my last option as Ive been trying so many antibiotics both oral and topical and they dont seem to be working on me anymore. My face is a messblackheads on my forehead, cystic pimples on my cheeks, horribly oily skin, large pores, scars all over my face etc. I normally cover everything up with make up but there are days like today when I had to call in sick and was unable to go to work as a cyst on my cheek popped and Im left with a bleeding scar. Have no idea how to cover it up tomorrow.

Youre lucky that you dont have to go to work every day. Ive got a very customer service focused role and I see clients every day. I just dont know how to cope in a new work environment when my face goes crazy. Trust me I know it will when I start tane, as Ive got so many under the skin acne plus blackheads. Youre right though, its difficult to say when is the right time to start tane. I guess Ive got no choice as my dermatologist said that theres nothing else she can do for me except prescribing accutane.

Thank you again and I really hope that it works for you. All of you!!

Maggie

It was pretty easy for me to get my accutane. Possibly because I'm a guy but other than that I tried a few things it didn't work and then one day my primary care doctor said she strongly believes in accutane and it's not a big deal as people make it out to be" and then I went to the fern they took my blood and gave me my kit right then and there. But you're a female so you might want to already start the process because for you it can take months unless you already have, sorry I'm new here. Good luck :)

Been there done than Im sorry to say :(

Im older than most here (42 in June) and thought Im not working i have 2 kids and was heavily involved in the PTA and school activities.

My kids also are involved in sports etc

I have actually backed away from supporting school functions or being a part of planning activities because of my face.

This year I was the class mom for my daughter and had the IB right before i had to to go to school for the Holiday Party..It was BAD!

I was sooooo ashamed!!

I couldnt enjoy my daughter or the day as I should have.

So bottom line acne sucks..BIG TIME!!!

Ive had huge messes on my face that I actually covered with a small band aid

I honestly didnt know what else to do!!!!!

I had people, in the past, ask me what happened to my face etc

JERKS

I like you have been through it all...antibiotics and topicals..this is the last option and i think its a good one!

It works..I believe it does!!!

Its just a tough road to get there

and to be honest i wish I opted to try tane sooner as I think once i go to this point, for me, me nerves self esteem etc was shot

Wish u the best!

Hang in there

any further questions or u just want to vent ot someone who understand..pm me :)

Dear Charlie and Kim,

Thanks a lot. I can say that I've already started the process. I would have to have a blood test done and could walk away with accutane in April. The reason why I didn't start taking it 3 monts ago was related to the fact that I've got a very customer service focused role and I was afraid of the initial breakout. Now I'm due to start a new job so there will never be a good time for me to start accutane. Nothing works for me anymore. I actually have to put a plaster or something on my face tomorrow and go to work. I've got no choice. I feel like I'm going to die tomorrow as I'll be so embarrassed.

Hang in there

any further questions or u just want to vent ot someone who understand..pm me :)

kim

Maggie

Maggie I have to go out in public to the DMV on Thursday so we can both be embarrassed together! And I'm in that breakout stage and to be honest it sucks I'm all red and inflamed in places I didn't think possible on my face. And it hurt to eat and talk the past few days but it's not as painful today but I don't think the breakout is done unfortunately. I don't wear makeup cause I'm a guy, so you're lucky :/

Maggie, believe it or not (you would never be able to tell from my posts) I am in school to become a therapist....I have to sit face to face with clients, groups and families to conduct counseling sessions. I'll tell you the straight truth, as soon as my IB started I just said to myself "screw it! I look lie what I look like if that effects the way anybody treats or thinks of me that's their loss". It's easier said then done but that's what I did (and still do, my face is a blotchy mess)

GOOD LUCK!!

I wish I had the balls to do that. I mean... I have balls... But ... Okay I'll stop myself right there.

Also what have you guys been taking your pill with? I take absorica so I don't have to worry about fatty meals but I take it with two pieces of bread with peanut butter. Does the trick!

I do agree, it's easier said then done but that's how it is. I just need to grow some balls I guess starting mid April :). I'm done with not living and just existing. So I'll have an initial breakout and my face will get worse for 5 months. I guess the thought of having clear skin will keep me going. The fact that I'll start a new job in April and I won't be able to call in sick when I get the initial breakout will make me stronger. I've been taking antibiotics for so long now and it's getting worse and worse and that's my I'm so frustrated.

Thanks everyone. I'm begining my journey with accutane in April.

I™m preparing myself for the worst-case scenario. I don™t have acne on all over my face, just some horribly stubborn, painful and bleeding cysts on my cheeks that leave scars (huge ones) and lots of blackheads on my forehead. I know that some people break out in places they never used to break out before taking the tane. Knowing my luck I™ll breakout like a crazy person. Has anyone taken any steroids to control the IB? My dermatologist mentioned to me that I could get steroind or something else (don™t remember what) to control the initial flare up.

My dermatologist said you could get a antibiotic to use with it but that's just delaying your initial breakout. In all honesty you want that initial breakout so every gunk in your skin cleans itself. I'm one of the people that broke out in places I never have before. But my breakout is turning scabby so I think that means it's starting to clear up. *knock on wood*

Thanks. I guess you're right. I don't want to delay the initial breakout. I just need to see how it goes as it's difficult to predict. I've got 2 red scabs/wounds on my cheeks now. That's just the type of acne I get. Cystic spots that pop when I sleep or wash my face ale leave wounds and scabs. At least I know what to expect when I start accutane.

I used to get that type too! But my breakout was the weirdest thing. accutane is giving me whiteheads and black heads and these flat spots. But that's just everything coming to the surface. I also hear people breaking out a second time when they up their dose which is what I'm doing this weekend. Agh

Sorry to hear that. I don't know which type of acne is the worste...cystic, blackheads, whiteheads. I bet you're praying not to break out again when your dose is increased. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. As a 26 year old female who's 170 tall and weights 48 kg I'll be prescribed 20 mg per day to start of. My dermatologist will review the dose after the first month. We will see how it goes.

Yeah it's not fun I have all those types of acne right now. Definitely feeling a little dry which is making me happy. Instead of pain my mouth region and chin feels really tight like a rough scab. I'll take that over the extreme pain I had this week. Still hurts to smile just barely

I begged my derm for an antibiotic or something to get through the IB but was told NO

my derm made me stop antibiotics 2 weeks pre tane

said something about brain swelling..

sucks..it does seem common but not everyone has an IB

fingers crossed for you!

Kim is right, most antibiotics can cause the pressure in your brain to get so bad you basically get meningitis and can die. I had to stop 5 days before taking my accutane. Probably should have waited longer but my had feels fine. I also never get headaches

Welcome Maggie, Welcome CShock!!

You are right, there is no right time to start Tane. I think I have been lucky since I don't work with customers and I live alone and winter here in Canada means lots of clothes to hide behind and less light, but still, I would have done it even if it had not been the case.

It's funny to worry about the IB, I mean, aren't we acne sufferers? If we have been prescribed Accutane it's because our skin was bad, so I don't see a huge deal in experiencing an IB. It's not fun, but it's not something totally new.

As for me, I had a really bad breakout around between day 10 and day 25... From then on, I was constantly breaking out but the acne was not as bad as in the beginning. I will finish Accutane in 25 days and I am still getting acne, so I would recommend everyone to be very patient and not to expect fast magical results. Oh, and don't celebrate too quickly. Sometimes, you think that the end has arrived but nope, there is always a new one waiting to come up. My skin is better but it's not acne free yet. I guess I'll have to be patient again. Everyone is different though, but I think you should start with realistic expectations so you don't get too disappointed. So Maggie, I would tell you to go for it, the sooner you start, the sooner you are done and the sooner you will enjoy clear skin.

Thanks Mary,

I'm not a patient person at all...I guess it will be a test for me. I always have something on my face smaller or bigger so I'm used to. It needs to work.

So no antybiotics then, what about steroids? My derm had no concerns about prescribing antibiotics or steroids when I expressed my feelings about the initial flare up. Not sure why. I don't want to die....well I do now when my face is a mess now, but not when I actually start the tane. Need to ask more questions when I see her again.

Kim I'm 100% sure I'll get the IB. That's just my life, and I know the state of my skin. All blackheads on my forehead and bumps under my cheeks will come up.

Thanks for all responses and advice.

There is a specific type of antibiotic they CAN give you but I even got an IB. With antibiotics so I don't see the point! You may be different tho.

HOLY COW Mary...25 days!!!!!

OMG the final countdown!!!

Have u decided what you will do..

I have heard many people say they only stop breaking out AFTER stop tane...how stupid is that?

Can you talk to your derm about adding a 6thmnth?

U def arent alone..im still getting small breakouts that pop up now, though not daily, maybe every 3-4 days

Maggie

There is a specific type of antibiotic they CAN give you but I even got an IB. With antibiotics so I don't see the point! You may be different tho.

Kim congrats on the fourth month ani...I take my last pill of month four tonight.

I'll ask my derm what to do. Honestly if I could avoid the IB I would take anything!!! I just can't imagine getting new pimples every single day. I normally get 3-5 every month but painful and cystic ones that leave scars. That's the reason why I haven't started the tane yet, just can't imagine my skin getting worse.

Congrats to all of you on your anni. Stay strong please as you're giving me hope
