2 Months Post-Accutane, Body Acne Returning

Hello. This is my first post. Long-time lurker while being treated with Accutane.

I recently finished a 6-month course of Accutane in mid-November. I'm a male well into his 30s who suffered mainly from acne to the back, shoulders, chest, neck and scalp. I would get the occasional facial acne, but that mostly subsided in my early 20's. The moderate back acne, which started in my teens, continued to persist until Accutane. Also, my mother's family all struggled with body acne in their adulthood. whistling.gif

My Accutane dosage was for 6 months. 40 mg first month. 80 mg the last 5 months. I weigh 140 pounds.

Around month 4 of treatment, I was completely clear (with the occasional scalp pimples - which no one can see) until this week. I began to get a few pimples to my mid-upper chest - one with a head and a couple with some heft, feeling almost cystic. Of note, I've also had a few red spots around hair follicles with a visible hair in the center, but these disappear after a couple days. (I've never been tested for folliculitis.) The back has remained relatively clear save a red spot or two that clears quickly. The oil of my nose, forehead, mid-upper back and chest have returned to normal levels, which as you could imagine is on the oily side.

I've begun using a 10% BP wash since the breakout. I normally use Dove soap, Cetaphil facial cleanser for oily skin and a back scrubber. I exercise 3 days/week, take a normal whey protein supplement. I have also drank alcohol a little more recently due to feeling more sociable while not being on Accutane, which I plan to curb. I eat a low fat/sugar/salt diet and am dairy-free. Shower regularly, wear a clean shirt to bed, the usual that we all suffer through.

I'm thinking of calling my derm soon if this persists. I'm a little disappointed but not alarmed yet. It's premature for a second-course, but maybe a topical?

Anyone who's taken Accutane for body acne or had any similar experiences have any advice?

I would appreciate any help. I can't tell you how grateful I was to read your similar stories and follow your advice while on Accutane.

One thing that strikes me from your post is that you're also consuming whey protein for bodybuilding? Me too! And I'm breaking out still on my month 5. I'm wondering if it has to do with my protein intake. I want to stop taking protein if I still get breakouts after the treatment

You know, I'm glad I threw the kitchen sink out there. That's a good point. I've read possible links to protein supplements causing acne, but never came across anything definitive. It stands to reason, I suppose.

It might be worth a shot to see if cutting it out helps. Can't we do anything without getting breakouts?
