Hello guys,

I am new on acne.org. Have read silently for a while but now I need your help, please!!!

About me and my acne:

I have been fighting acne for about 6 years now. I am female and already 21 years old.. I am absolutely horrified about the way my skin looks and it makes me cry and get upset A LOT...

Well I am on birth control, which seems do to pretty much nothing...

And I have used Duac and Epiduo in the past.

I have very sensitive and dry, but also broken out skin ...

Epiduo worked really well on my acne, but since I have used it for about 1 year, my skin got more and more sensitive to it and I could only use it every 4th day and like once a week in winter, plus the use of moistruizer ect...

Also I was sick of the BPO, it is so harsh and causes ageing apparently over time.

Well anyways, I went to get Differin the 0.1% cream type, which is supposed to be a lot milder then Epiduo (combination of 0.1% Adapalen and 2.5% BPO).

NOW I have a huge problem it seems to work on my acne... (which I guessed it would, because it is so similar to Epiduo) BUT it makes me super oily, shiny

Please help me, is this normal?! Has anyone else experienced it? Note: I do NOT have oily skin naturally...

Have I maybe been overusing it? Because my skin is quite red and I have used it every night as my derm suggested... Epiduo I could only tolerate every 4th day..

Because, I am not that flakey or dry as I was with Epiduo at all... but oily

I look hidous at the moment, red and acne and oily... I want to hide myself somewhere and never come back... :-(

Please tell me about your experience with Differin?

Is is a safe long term solution? Does it make ageing worse, like BPO?

Should I start of again a lot slowlier?

Will the oil go away?

I am 21 years old!!!!!! and desperate to get rid of this horrible teenager look like skin... everyone mistakes me for being 16 of my looks already anyways...

Thank you for any replies!!!

I wish you all the best!

xoxo Anna

Just going to say, it's a physical impossibility for differin to increase sebum production. Just doesn't work that way.

ok thanks for your reply.

So you suggest that it is due to overdrying my skin that my skin is all oily and shiny..

It's just I am really confused and have read it online a couple of times that people made the same experience ??

Do you use differin?/Have you ever used it?

I used differing in the past and I think that it makes you "shiny" because it evens out your skin and makes it really smooth...I am oily anyway so I understand your issue. Shiny and oily sucks lol. But as far as the redness goes you may want to talk to your doctor about that. Maybe start slower. It is a medication that takes ur skin a while to get use to...it changes how your skin sheds cells...I found out that I have acne rosacea...basically dry and oily and super sensitive skin . Had the same problems w Bp. I have insurance again so I'm starting something new

Ok thanks for your reply.

That does name sense!

Because my skin is also really strange... With differin it's not really that dry except around my nose but it was very red and irritated especially on my chin and nose area when I started of with using it every night..

So now I am currently trying with every 4th night and then slowly increasing.. It is very confusing and annoying because my skin needs a moisturizer but is left with a shiny oily looking skin afterwards.. It is as if the skin doesn't absorb the moisture but if I don't use it it gets way to dry and irritated.. Also my skin is generally very sensitive and irritated dry etc.. But still acne prone .. It sucks big time!!!! Trying to cope with those two problems..

I guess I'll give it one last try and hopefully the oily shiny look will go away..!

I really would love this to work all the way though as it seems a safe and long term solution...

Anybody else about their experience with differin?! Happy to hear from you :)

Yes that would be the same formulation as Epiduo (Adapalen = Differin, and BPO). And yes I had the same side effects, super dry and itchy, peeling and red skin.

BUT it worked for my acne, its just, because of the BPO (which causes ageing) not a long term solution (for me), but if you don't use it forever it should be fine.

I've used it for around 1,5 years..

I can recommend you to start of really slow again with using it every 4th night and applying moistruizer on top. Plus using it every moring like this one is great for example:

http://www.aveneusa.com/products/concern/acne-adjunctive-care/clean-ac-hydrating-cream

I use and love it.

Anyways, no one I have ever met has as sensitive skin as I do... so I can only tell you if you have active acne Epiduo worked great for me on that. I only used it every 2nd night during summer time at most, usually every 4th, so less is more with Epiduo.

Well now my acne isn't AS bad... but I still get clogged pores that form to zits.. thats why I thought trying to get my skin acne free again with Differin would be better for me as Epiduo might be to much, I am also not a teen anymore..

Well it fights the zits but the strange shine bugs me :(

I guess I'll start of a lot more slowely again, as my skin is super sensitive and maybe was producing more oil because of that..

Anybody else knows whether this will balance itself out?!

all the best xoxo

Anna

I have been batteling acne for about 5 years now.. which sucks big time.. but I still haven't found my "miracle cure" .. it's always the same sth works brilliantly, stopps working, I get resitant to it and so on...

I am so fed up and upset with it sad.png

How old are you if I may ask?

I am female and already 21 years old... So if you are still in your teens you may be lucky and things sort themselves out...

I mad the huge mistake to start with all these products on my few tiny zits when I was 16 and it then it got worse, worse and worse.. you know the story ...

Biggest mistake if have met ever!

Anybody else out there?

I just hope so badly to get rid of acne it really detroys my self esteem and my happiness...

I know honey it is so hard... I know there are way more serious illnesses one can get..

But still acne ruins my life, there so many things I "can't" do any more, like go to the Pool, because of make up and so on...

I am so sick of it ... it has been way too long :(

I get really anxious about being in public as well and I am not ugly, fat etc.. but the acne takes all my beauty away... I know it sounds stupid but it's true.. I notice people staring at me..

Also my main problem is that even though I have been clear at times, I have so many red marks from the old spots and I have extremly fair skin so everything is always clearly visible, like blood vessels etc.. and all those treatments just destroy my skin even more.. It's like if I ever get permantely clean which would alerady be super great, it would take me another 3 years for all the marks to fade... I am not kidding... they take FOREVER to fade..

But you said you have just started with your first treatment? Did you have acne before or did it somehow just come all of a sudden?

And is your skin naturally oily? Because mine is not at all it is super sensitive and rather dry, but I still get clogged pores that become zits..

Epiduo did not make me more oily, that why I am asking?

Thinking of you!

xoxo

Yep, my first treatment. I didn't before have acne before. I've been constipated no matter what I do, nothing seems to help..fruits,veggies...nothing. Then along came the acne & lots it...just increasing day after day. I've been to the doc before re the constipation and he only provided a temporary fix so I'm going back tomorrow. Hopefully once my digestive system regularizes the acne will go!! I don't have any scars, just have pimples, lots and lots....I haven't really worn foundation since I started breaking out, I didn't really wear heavy foundation before anyway (just wore a mineral powder). I feel like if I had spots they'd be easier to cover :( I can't cover my bumps...Can I?! I just want my face to back to NORMAL!!

I feel like no one really understands. The other night I was crying about it and my mother was like "is that all that's wrong?" like if i'm not pregnant with AIDS what i'm feeling doesn't matter :(

I'm not fat either, not ugly but that acne monster def stole my beauty :( I lost all my confidence. I can't even look people in the eyes anymore. Not to mention the fact that I've been cooped up in the house all summer.

Tips to remove acne scars: papaya skin and/or by placing honey on a lemon and placing it on affected areas

Good luck!!

xoxo chev

Yes I know exactly what you mean with me it was pretty much the same... all the way through puberty when everyone had acne I had perfect skin... And then at nearly 17 it started.. first a few which I tried to get rid of myself and obviously screwed everything up.. which then developed to full acne that got better and worse at times.. It is so frustrating, because I am already 21 years old and it seems like nothing is ever going to change it and I'll stay like this forever ...

Also, my mum is exactly the same, she has never had acne, so she doesn't understand... But she claims that no one sees the spots that much and so on..

And when I was younger I was still hopeful and thought ok a doctor is going to cure me.. I am it's just acne right?! Not cancer etc.. But I was so wrong, many doctors out there to give a f.. and really do not listen to your concerns or whenever I tell them I have really sensivitve dry skin.. they claim things like no everyone with acne has oily though skin.. that's not true!!!

I also believe, that all those horrible products ruined my skin forever... but when I try to life without them it gets worse.. It's either acne and "healthy" looking skin.. or less acne and dried out, damaged skin..

Oh, yes I am also the same about trying to hide inside.. And it is horrible as I live at university, so I only got a tiny room to myself ... but I so ashamed.. and I am not kidding.. I try to get out of places like the supermarkt, or classes as quickly as possible to be in my "safe" own room where no one sees me..

And unfortunately I only have 6 weeks of holiday, so no proper time to try to fix my skin before the new term starts.. I really do not want to go back to school looking like this...

I feel so alone and everything seems to be getting worse ...

Are you still continueing with Epiduo?

How is it?

Have you tried using it less often?

That's what really worked for me!

And with the moistruizer I recommened!

Good Luck!!! xx

Also to everyone out there to get back to Differin:

My skin seems to be so damaged from using it like over 2 weeks ago, every day... I have now cut down to once a week.. Still it does not seem to repair itself really and the shin, not proper oil, like from the damaged skin, is still there..

It's like my skin can't even absorb the moistruizer...

Is this normal? Has anyone experienced that?

I thought Differin is a lot milder than Epiduo (BPO + Differin).. I don't get why my skin looks like this..

Please help me, anyone how has experience with Differin?!

I am about to quit again.. but I really want to give it a proper try..

I am desperate to sort out my current skin state... sad.png

Thank you!

i'm on differin .1% for 3 weeks now. it's just made my skin dry out quite a bit if I'm not using moisturizer. overall will make your skin get worse (exactly how they say), meaning cystic acne pop up, but i believe they come from all those under the skin acne. need 1.5 weeks for those cystic acne to heal... so just be patient.... because in the end, the differin gel does heal them anyway... therefore im till using it with hope...
