Repairing the long-term damage from Accutane

I've used iodine from kelp in doses from 300 mcg to 1000 mcg. I get discouraged because I experience anxiety from it. It does however, warm me up where I'm usually freeing. The anxiety is probably from the kelp, not iodine directly.

I tried lugols iodine but one drop made me feel shaky and sick. I threw it out immediately.

If I'm not mistaken, this is different from changing your genes themselves. Your genome itself is still going to be the same before and after Accutane.

What dose ofpilocarpine are you taking? just checked the pharmacy here and the only form they have are eyedrops ...

The drops are what I'm taking. And actually it's been 3 whole weeks now since I've taken even one dose and I still feel great. Symptoms haven't returned. I was taking the 1% solution drops

You're taking more than just the eye drops though with Pilocarpine aren't you??

Do you need a prescription to get Pilocarpine or can you just buy over the counter at a chemist?

anyone still have incredibly thin and sensitive skin after accutane? how did you treat it?

yes - extreme skin sensitivity and thin skin. especially the UV sensitivity is terrible. i have not found anything that would help.

Accutane is like a nuclear bomb hitting your body is more realistic, taking out and damaging various parts and organs along the way I might add.

It's almost certain the drug has induced epigenetic changes, so it's switched certain genes on/off. This would also explain why the dosage is irrelevant, just like with finasteride, saw palmetto etc. Some people seem to be susceptible to the changes, and sometimes people can take these drugs for years on end, then suddenly 'crash', or crash when they stop taking them, or crash after a single pill in some cases.

I only took 10mg for 30 days, and 6.5 years later still have the persistent side effects.

Epigenetic changes can be induced by diet, exercise etc, but also environmental conditions, exercise, toxins etc.

Unfortunately for us the changes seem to have affected many different systems - hormones out of balance, methylation compromised, poor gut health, all things which are interlinked.

I'm currently taking adaptogen herbs which are supposed to balance hormones, along with some supplements to improve methylation. Have had some benefits with both.

Up until recently I was eating pumpkin seeds daily which helped mental clarity etc. These are a DHT inhibitor, which could explain why they help. My DHT is actually very high (very oily skin), despite low T. Some people seem to have low T and very low DHT. Since stopping the pumpkin seeds my DHT seems to have spiked resulting in prostate pain, so it's making me consider some stronger DHT inhibitors (altough not accutane obviously!)

Hello.

First of all, don't get too excited if you're in a similar situation to me and were hoping this post would hold the fix for long-term (Ro)accutane damage. I just wanted to express my situation and see if anyone can help.

I'm bored of reading depressing no-way-out answers and I refuse to give up and stop trying to fix myself. I'm also not inviting those who say the side effects aren't caused by this drug - I am 100% sure, and have read enough posts from others to know that Accutane isn't simply 'out' of your system after a month. I've read several theories into why things like IBS, Erectile Dysfunction and knee problems can occur months or years after stopping treatment. I'm talking about the liver storing the high-levels of Vitamin A, Accutane staying in the colon, and even something - which if it's true means only bad news - to do with DNA change and 'Telomere' shortening, which means a slow but sure decrease in health(This has been written by Nathan Carr, who you may of heard of).

But I'm not writing to find out which of these theories, if any, is true. I want to see if anyone can actually give good advice on supplements/diet, or whatever else, to repair damage from this poison.

Below, I will list the details of when I took this drug and what side effects I have + how I cope with life. One last thing - Anyone saying that these side effects are rare, i.e 1%, forget it. 1% reported. Since taking this drug, my life has been limited and difficult. I'm not in that 1% statistic because I haven't reported it directly to the manufacturer. I expect the figure is a lot higher.

As I said, side effects can come on AFTER taking this, so people could be ignorant to the cause. However, I know better, and after watching my health drop dramatically while/after taking Accutane, I can firmly say it's the cause. Let's begin ...

Basics: I'm 21 at the end of this month. It's now 5 years since I touched Ro-accutane (Ro-accutane is just the British name for it). I took it from December 2005 - May 2006. I was meant to finish in June, but stopped due to feeling very depressed/suicidal (because of the drug). My problems are below...

- Dry Eyes (Severe)

- E.D/ Low Libido (Started last year and has gone on consistently since)

- Hair-loss (Including eyebrows, facial hair 'gaps' and body hair)

- Slow Healing (Shaving is a pain now - No, it's not my technique)

- Lack of sebum (oil)

- Brain Fog/ Memory problems - Somewhat minor

- Anxiety (mainly because of the other side effects - i.e. dry eyes causing me to feel embarassed about eye contact)

- Excessive hair (Not related to head, but my beard grows high up on cheeks and even on the outside of my nose)

- I believe I look older than I should due to lack of oil

- Joint/Muscle problems - Aches/ Slow recovery

- Excessive sweating.. Terrible if I go running at the gym, for example.

- Dry mouth

- Nosebleeds more than I should

- Fatigue

- Overall depression and confusion (*Rhetorical question* Is this a direct symptom or am I like it because of all the other side-effects stressing me out?)

That's what I can think of for now. Of course, I wasn't told about half of these being a possibly problem and I was told any side-effects will be temporary. I was 15, so I had no reason not to trust the Doc's word.

I've tried lots of different supplements (a lot of which I still take just incase they are helping/slowing down the problems) including Omega 3, Biotin, B-Complex, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Collagen, Hyaluronic acid, Aloe Vera Juice, MSM, Colostrum, Garlic, Acetyl L-Carnitine, Acetyl L-Cysteine, Milk Thistle, Dandelion Root, Quercetin, Tumeric.

So, yeah, I've tried a lot of things. The Milk Thistle and Dandelion Root are recent additions because despite having my liver test results come back as positive, I've heard your liver can still not be functioning correctly and people are given liver tests monthly while taking this drug for a reason, right? I'm starting to eat better foods as this sh*t taught me that Natural is the way to go. I still binge on cakes and that occasionally - Mainly for comfort. I'm average weight and height, but want to cut out processed foods to support my body.

I don't want to make this EXTREMELY long, so I'll cut it short. I'm currently seeing a Homeopathy about these problems. And Yes, I know "Science says it's boll*cks", and I don't understand how it's supposed to work, but sometimes you have to think outside the box and give things a go. I don't have high hopes for things getting better these days, but I'm not giving up. There is so much more I could say, but let me know your thoughts. I don't want to hear negative and hopeless responses. What HAS helped you? Acne.org seems to be the biggest place to speak about this, but we NEED the word out, so the 'experts' can do the research instead of hoping for someone else to fix us.

Thanks for reading,

Indy.

How are you now? What you do to feel better? Please, tell me. I need some kind of hope

The original post that started it all I think most of us can relate to the long term side effects , we are all in the same boat.

Hey guys, little update regarding the hormones.

Was able to meet the andrologist today. She agreed that I have low total T and high SHBG, which she used to determine I have low free T. She doesn't test for free T, rather deduces it from these two numbers. I was prescribed something called Androgel, but I'll have blood tests done asap to determine where I'm at since June, BEFORE attempting anything. The only things I could get her to test is Hematocrit, LH, Prolactin, SHBG, Total T and PSA. Nothing else. She has no use for any mineral or vitamin, didn't care to test other hormones, doesn't know anything about DHT, has never heard of SARMs, believes doing exercise and going to the gym does not in any way impact Testosterone, and of course knows nothing about my issues being potentially caused by Accutane.

I'm not sure if this is standard, but through speaking with her, I could really see how much of a generalist she is, ironically, even though she's supposedly a specialist. I doubt she's deepened her knowledge in the past 30 years. Didn't seem to know much of anything besides what she must tell every man that enters the room. I guess she just prescribed me the same thing she prescribes any other person, independently of their situation, only because I have low T, and without caring for any other factor.

I'm really not sure if I'll take anything prescribed through her. I don't at all feel understood or confident that this would truly help me. It will be tough to find a better specialist here in Quebec so I'm not sure what's next.

The thing I took out of this is you saw an "Andrologist" didn't even know there was such a specialist.

I thought an Endocrinologist would handle such matters.

Add this to to the list of specialists to see in 2017 folks....

Theres no such specialist as an Andrologistper se, usually they are urologists who choose to focus on certain patients only.

Kynarr, can you list your side effects so others know what you are trying to fix.
If you raise T, in most cases E and DHT will be raised as well (maybe not accutane victims) - so these definitely should be checked.
For sexual problems there is a standard list of tests which any decent doctor will order.

Mikez

I'm not confused. Just wondering how anyone who has had problems from accutane for many years wouldn't know this!

No specialtycollege being the key. Basically, self appointed title. As you can see above, no more useful than standard endo or uro. You need an 'anti ageing' GP to get on top of cases like ours in terms of hormones.

Lol. I am sure that anyone who now needs to know what an andrologist specialises in can look it up.
I agree about anti ageing specialist but we don't really get them here in the UK.
You use the term GP which makes me think you maybe british - or else canadian?

You must be referring to me as I didn't know about an Andrologist. I don't have any sexual issues though so never had to delve into this area.

Fatigue yes, which in a way effects sexual performance but no issues directly related.

So no need to be baffled....

Im from Aus...good guess :)     What one chooses to 'specialise in',  is not the same as a board certified specialist.   There is no such thing for 'Andrology'.    I go to GPs with an interest in hormonal issues as they seem less likely to be stuck in the stone ages,  but even then its hit and miss.

Arguing trivial details I see.

Yes, I did meet with an andrologist. I don't care much for the title, if anything she was pretty incompetent, as are most health professionals. I didn't learn much, I just now have access to prescribed Steroids if I so desire to shut down what's left of my natural T production. My reason for meeting with one is as simple as can be; I have low T and high SHBG/Estradiol.

I guessed for years that I had low T. Hypersomnia, low energy, always tired, joints prone to aching, dry skin, inability to gain muscle. Doesn't this bear much resemblance to Accutane sides? I'm through working on an Accutane toxicity theory. It makes more sense to focus on what's proven to be abnormal. I fully expect not a single person here has proper hormone levels. I fully expect none of you here gets decent results from going to the gym.

Main focus right now is the pituitary gland / thyroid. Again, pointing back to Iodine. I don't know yet for sure but I'd guess my hormone levels have improved in the past month. We'll know for sure soon enough. My goal is to avoid going on Androgel. It will be hard to know for sure because I'm playing a lot with Iodine, but I believe the pituitary gland is too screwed up to send proper LH signaling for T production.

Any of you have clear fluorosis signs on your teeth?

For the record, I have a very high libido. The only thing that ever affected this is depression and anti-depressants. That's just not a concern for me. Not sure why.

Excellent post - I appreciate your level of detailed info!!

I go to dentist twice a year, not so much lately but definately something I've experienced- I had some marks on my front teeth that dentist couldn't understand. It came off easily enough but this only ever occurred after tane - coincidence....maybe, looked like a red wine or coffee stain but dentist said it was something else - couldn't name it though.

I think where you're heading with tests i.e hormone, Pituitary etc is where I need to go next.

Ive done the whole liver stuff, worked on gut, even done kidney cleanses - all to no avail. I've done all this to try and get relief
from Iight sensitivity, tiredness and pressure in head. It's time I addressed the source prob which is hormone and gland related, it has to be.

Keep us updated as you progress!!

Pressure in the head , welcome to the party. Trying to fix a nuclear attack with supplements is not going to help side effects are just what they are , permanent sadly.

Drink lots of water . And avoid rubbing your skin unless you want to have a heart attack.

Well actually, Iodine is pretty useful in case of a nuclear attack... but I digress. Many of you don't wanna hear it. You'd rather boohoo, complain, and make this pain of yours into your new identity, than actually fix yourself.

Well actually, Iodine is pretty useful in case of a nuclear attack... but I digress. Many of you don't wanna hear it. You'd rather boohoo, complain, and make this pain of yours into your new identity, than actually fix yourself.
