Repairing the long-term damage from Accutane

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to write about my recent experience which may help some of you.

A couple of weeks ago I spoke to a nutritionist about my health symptoms and get a blood test of the full spectrum of Vitamins and Minerals, as well as full Iron count. The nutritionist told me that antibiotics, accutane, birth control pills etc tend to deplete our bodies of its resources and that can create chronic problems like under active thyroid, poor digestion, arthritis, diabetes etc. That is why we notice the acne and other symptoms become much worse when you stop the medicines. (Case in point - mild acne turned to cystic acne after getting off antibiotics.)

My results indicated severe and/or borderline deficiencies in Vitamin B, K, Iron, Zinc, Natural Fats, K etc. Although I have been supplementing with vitamins for the last one year, it seems my body is unable to absorb the vitamins because the deficiencies have resulted in a lack of stomach acids that are needed for good digestion. Therefore I have to eat special pro-biotics and digestive enzymes with all the vitamins. She said it would take about a year to normalize my numbers as long as i follow her regime. She has also recommended the paleo diet to get the nutrients quicker.

This was the first time someone actually understood the symptoms and was able to pin point the true cause as being internal and diet/ nutrient related. I really recommend that all of you find a testing lab that does this kind of blood test. It may be expensive but its worth your health and will remove the guesswork from your regime.

That's a very smart post, Malika. I've begun to suspect I'm suffering from a folate deficiency. There are a number of correctives I will try.

http://www.firzone.co.uk/shop/fir-blankets/portable-infrared-sauna-blanket/prod_4.html

Ended up buying this just now.

Was going to get a similar one for 60, but second hand probably isn't a good idea.

Hope it works, or helps.

I freaking pray it does.

3% of sweat from regular saunas contains toxins, whereas IFR ones contain upto 20%

If Accutane is still in our bodies, this is our best hope of getting it out.

If anything, I love saunas anyway and this should help me to relax and release toxins from other things (ie pesticides and chemicals from the air. Also, heavy metals).

I'm not saying anyone else should get one though.

It may have no effect on my health.

I'm still afraid Chico will suddenly come back and dash my hopes.

He said he was going to use one.

I started looking for one's I could rent, but figured it'd be best to have access to one regularly.

It'd be nice to use in the comfort of my own house too, and it won't take up room when I'm not using it.

Fingers crossed.

Meanwhile, I'll also be eating better.

I'm still avoiding gluten, though I do have some bad foods (i.e. popcorn and ice cream last night). No gluten, but high in sugar and carbs!

I pray we all get to have a normal life soon.

Stefan

Recently spoke to a fellow Taner - Tree1 - on the phone.

It really helps to have a conversation with someone who knows exactly what this is like.

Hi guys.

I hope all is well, I feel for you guys I really do!

I'm starting muscle building, and on supplements for growth - Creatine.

Creatine has apparently cured loads of diseased according to Wikipedia..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creatine#Treatment_of_diseases

Anyway, you can pick up this stuff in Argos and places like that, cheap aswell (10-20)

You WILL recover, hang in there guys!

I hope I've helped, thanks.

Hey Mickymouse,

Are you saying this helped you?

Or is helping you?

I think we will too. And then we will be Gods in our right, and kick butt.

I know it's not good to get super hopeful, but I have a good feeling about the sauna.

I'm also planning on getting checked for nutrient deficiency

I've found creatine to be helpful. It's well researched and cheap. One of the few that does something useful.

@indigo I've noticed improvements from the infrared sauna use. After two 45 min sessions (a week apart) It was significant. I slept. Acctually slept! I had energy during the day, no joint pain and less digestive problems. My vitamin A sensitivity has decreased. I can eat eggs and butter now but not spinach.

I would recommend following what Chico has said about it.

What I am doing currently is taking a HCL betain/Pepsin supp to up my stomach acid. I'm doing that because I think chico said zinc binds to the retanol or vitamin a and to have good zinc levels you need enough stomach acid. I would also recommeend not eating any carbs/sugars for two days before your sauna treatment so your body is drawing from the fat and not the carbs.

I'm also taking fiber, digestive enzymes, vitamin c/e/d, and biotin.

On my sauna days I try to load up on milk thistle, MSM, and circulation foods like ginger and other spicy things.

Hope it helps everyone.

Lately I've had extreme fatique and nausea, loads of stomach acid and a bloating feeling..

Not sure if this is linked to Accutane but I've had 3-4 of Max Performance Creatine (Fruit Punch) and felt sudden excerise boosts.

For my stomach acid, I slip boiled water (drink as hot as possible) before bed and that seems to neutralise it.

I'll be writing some blog posts about Creatine and how my body reacted in detail, I'll post the link.

Although Creatine has many good points, it's absouletly priority you keep your body hydrated I'd say 10-12 glasses of water mini.

Sorry for any mistakes, on my mobile and a bit rushed again time

So the scallops reintroduction test appears to be working out BUT

I had to give it a week to get a clear result. I can't know whether the trouble on mon-thu was from a double dip due to Circadian stress or initial intestinal reaction to a new food type.

That means from now on each test requires 1 week of zero stress living to obtain a clear result.

That makes testing damn expensive and slow. It limits me to 52 tests per year. For clarity's sake I'll just start each new one on Monday.

I don't see anyone testing with that level of rigor here, so it's something to think about. If you're changing multiple things and interpreting results based on 1-5 days of data, that may not be enough time for the GI tract and overall system to adjust to a new input and clear old inputs.

EDIT: ANd this isn't just my opinion. See the GAPS protocol for a fascinating look at what it takes, both in order and duration, to rebuild a sensitive gut and/or food intolerances. It's actually much more rigorous than the above, yet it works for many when nothing else does.

I hope to have that blog post out by Sunday night (Day 1 - 3 of Creatine) at the latest - covering a lengthy introduction to Creatine, including medical references, any side effects experienced throughout taking it - and how it's given energy

If you're interested in Creatine;

http://www.argos.co....ber/9003486.htm

Exactly the same product I'm using..

If you fancy a read - Creatine is known as a fatigue buster reducing any resistance to stress.

Well I got back from my holiday yesterday - it was only a Mon-Fri. The whole holiday I had a headache of some sort every day as well as my eyes feeling rubbish. I had little energy throughout and stayed in the place we stayed in for virtually the whole time apart from a 30 minute morning walk in the cold, which took it out of me for the rest of the day.

I read a newspaper health article which featured ME a few days ago and it makes me wonder if I have this. I know it's easy to jump to conclusions when you read some symptoms of an illness - you sometimes think you have everything. But my eyes have been bad for a long time (6 years), and after coming on here, I thought maybe I just hve severely dry eyes, as some of you guys have dry eyes, which might be causing my problems with them. But my eyes hurt/sting/ get tired/red very quickly and easily looking at computer screens or watching TV, and more recently I've noticed being outside on a bright/hot day can cause the same problems (I would really like to know if anyone else here has problems like this). And now I've found out from this article that this (light sensitivity) is linked with ME, along with the headaches I've been getting recently, and lack of energy, it does make sense. I hate to go on about it, but since taking the Eniva Vibe, it's (still) made my energy levels considerably worse, and hardly had any headaches before. And I only took it for about 2 weeks, around 6 months ago on tiny doses. If I have to collect the blood test result (s) from the doctor soon then I'll gues I'll have to tell him my problems and see what he thinks.

Anyway, to answer your question before Indigo, my diet is still vegan, and no gluten, as gluten does not react well with me. I'm fine with gluten free porridge, but not normal porridge. I have briefly considered bringing in some meat, but the reason I cut out meat in the first place was that it greatly reduced my facial flushing of rosacea so I wasn't burring red over the tiniest situation, and I don't want that to happen again. Also, the Eniva Vibe showed I'm extremely sensitive to Vitamin A (or at least the synthetic form of retinyl palmitate) so that's another risk with meat. I eat around 2500 calories a day, which is the RDA, and a good amount of fat, but as others have also said here, can't put any weight on. I take Dr Schulze's Superfood Plus daily which gives me all the RDA for all the vitamins and a lot of the minerals in one go. At the moment, that is the only supplement I take.

It looks like nothing but at page 67 people who suffered from similar side effects seem to dramatically improve after Clomid.

By the way, does some of you smoke regularly ?

Interesting developments on the AllThingsMale forum. Clomid is an anti-estrogenic with some mild anabolic action. Combined with T it seems to help the finasteride sufferers. Steroid related, as I thought. There are only three people reporting, but at least it's something.

Now the question is does it work for accutane sufferers.

By the way, does some of you smoke regularly ?

Semi-regular at very low doses. Why do you ask?

The dopamine boost should be helpful. Tobacco has some beneficial properties for my condition.

It's no magic bullet though.

I think looking at this from the big picture, I'm looking to not have a dozen different things to do/watch to be still less than average health. Creatine is a bit helpful, yoga is bit helpful, gluten-free the same, etc. But even when adding all these things up they are just small little boosts that don't grow into actually being well. It's chronic condition management, not living.

Yeah, shit happens. So if I'm stuck with it, I am. Other people have chronic conditions too. But obviously I don't want to have this. It's a terrible way to live. It's actually a non-life.

The real question is what really kicks the body over to a better state after long term accutane damage. I was still growing in mid-adolesence with accutane in my system. It undoubtedly changed me in ways I can possibly never recover from.

Regardless, I'd still like to get far enough along where I don't feel like every moment is managing my precarious health condition.

These wildly varying prospects and ideas of how to treat this are seemingly without end. I ... we... need a kind of big gun solution, a silver bullet.

I'm down with steroids, obviously, having talked about them almost since starting posting here. I don't know if it's got to be me to go first, but at least I'm seeing people taking and writing about them now with finasteride.

We'll see.

Don't bother with that type of Creatine - caused low libido / erection, something to do with testosterone I think. I'll keep you guys updated

Careful with steroids. It's the same pathway through the liver as heavy metals and Accutane, so you need to get regular blood panels while you're on them to watch your liver's stress level. If you don't get blood work before and regularly during, you are potentially signing away years of life expectancy. In my case, I already have significant liver damage from Accutane, so steroids would be suicidal at this point.

I am doing tremendously better since reintroducing scallops. The veil of gradual malnutrition due to mineral (and other) deficiencies has dropped away. Recovery times, energy, psyche and mood are all vastly improved.

I had to stay up late for work Saturday night, so I won't know what effect scallops have on IBS until later this week. Circadian stress always triggers an IBS cycle regardless. It's therefore very hard to get a clean test on this metric. But clearly there is no crippling negative reaction, since I'm still functional.

I went approx 2 months without scallops. I think the body's general reserves for seafood-type depletion are 4 months. But that probably assumes a more varied diet than I eat. I was definitely hitting a hard malnutrition limit, what with the crippling leg cramps.

If any of you suffer from leg cramps, restless legs, etc, those are simply the most obvious signs of a deficiency complex that affects far more than just muscle tissue, and salt-water bivalves are the best cure. Aquaculture or wild caught doesn't matter, since they merely filter seawater, which has inexhaustible mineral resources.

In today's modern agribusiness soil-depleted environment, getting those sea minerals can be particularly important, although even for hunter gatherers trade with coastline for these minerals continues even during wartime due to their necessity.

It's not just the insane percentage values that bivalves offer for key life nutrients, but also the ultra-high bioavailability, something not reflected in the chemical composition percentage values. The way human beings hoard and flush minerals like iron and copper and nutrients like iodine makes it clear we originally evolved for a salt-water coastal environment. See the "shoreline dweller hypothesis."

Don't bother with that type of Creatine

Just get regular creatine monohydrate and mix it with grape juice or even herbal tea first thing in the morning. Those sugar pre-mixes are full of chemicals and odd sugars.

If any of you suffer from leg cramps, restless legs, etc, those are simply the most obvious signs of a deficiency complex that affects far more than just muscle tissue, and salt-water bivalves are the best cure

Do you have a source for this claim? Or is it personal and/or anecdotal experience?

Joseph, try adding gelatin to your diet to buffer the IBS. It slightly increases food tolerance, similar to stock.

I eat around 2500 calories a day, which is the RDA, and a good amount of fat, but as others have also said here, can't put any weight on

Yes, I think accutane impairs absorption or perhaps metabolism in some way. You have to count on losing about 3-500 calories per day. At 2500 it's not enough. Go to 3000 and you'll very likely gain a bit over time.

After suffering major stomach pains in the last few days (caused by accumulation in the intestines) Ive tried enema flushing yesterday. I was surprised of how little (almost nothing) happend. :( It was just horrible (I can't believe some people find pleasure in this [Edited image out] ). Anyway, I want to check out slippery elm or marshmallow as someone stated earlier. What are commercial forms of these that I can buy somewhere? I don't want to go into the woods and chew on leaves or something.. ;)

I'm starting to think that the main problem is in my small intestine and not my colon. The weird thing however is that the place were it hurts is the colon I think (about 5cm underneath my ribs on the left side.

Also got a major acne flare up yesterday. Trying to figure out what exactly triggered that. Would be interesting if we could bundle our experiences somehow, so everyone who suffers from acne has accessible resources at hand. :) I have some web development "skills", so in my free time I'll try to figure out something that might be helpfull for all of us.

Enjoy the weekend people! ;)

Hitman; if you're web developer wiki might be the answer - I might be able to supply web hosting (run my own servers)

Erections seem better 1+ days after not taking that creatine, going to wait before starting the other.

Thanks, levianthan. Interesting! Proviron has just been recently referenced the thread at Crissler's forum here http://www.musclecha...ne-Thread/page3 . It seems a safe and suitable candidate.

That's the fourth successful report using steroid-related compounds, three from finasteride, and now one from accutane damage using Proviron.

I now consider this adequate confirmation to at least try it out. This all makes sense now. It is as I thought.

The issue for me hasn't really been steroids - it's been clear from bodybuilder's frequent use of both accutane and steroids that they often report less side effects from accutane, or the sides go away after a steroid cycle. The issue has been which steroid. Which steroid is safest. Which is best if you don't care about being a bodybuilder. Which heals the accutane damage.

Unlike Joseph's claim above, the fact is that some steroids bypass the liver. Thankfully.

The musclechatroom thread has a contributer who has recommended both Proviron and Protodioscin, the active ingredient in tribulus terrestris. I'll probably start with the latter due to easy availability.

I'll have my own report on one or the other soon.

hey there,

i am planing also to put clomid to my regimen.I am sure that i will benefit from as it will send testosterone levels to the sky and that will mean greater libido. At the time i will raise the proviron dosage from 25mg to 75mg and see what happens. The goal is not to shut down your own testosterone production, and clomid will surely help that.Clomid is used by bodybuilders after steroid cycles to help ''wake up'' the hypothalamous-testicle axis which was supressed during steroid use.We should also be concerned about toxicity of these drugs.I dont want to be taking many drugs at a time too risky.
