I have a question for you Indigo - Have you ever looked at some of the treatments for your dry eyes on http://www.dryeyezone.com/talk/forum.php ? Just curious? They have some good topics on treatments and some who have taken Accutane.
Hey Survivors,
The other day I had blood-tests, as I mentioned.
I got a call today from the receptionist of the surgeons.
She told me my TSH (thyroid indicator) was 'borderline' and recommended I have another blood test in 3 months time.
I asked if I could have my results on paper, and I've just collected them.
Everything else appears to be fine. My Kidneys look to be perfect (maybe because I drink lots of water).
My Liver looks fine too.
My white-blood cell count seems low, however.
It can be between 4.00 and 11.00 (whatever that is).
Mine is 4.9, so seems at the low end of the scale, indicating poor immune function (though they didn't mention anything was wrong).
My Serum TSH level (Thyroid) is above range.
It should be between 0.35 and 3.5 (mlU/L).
Mine is 3.72.
At first I thought this meant my thyroid is over-active, which would have confused things.
But it shows I have hypothyroid.
I was tested for this a year or two ago, and was told it was normal.
I now wonder if it was heading towards being out of range.
I was highly suspicious that I had a thyroid problem, due to having so many of the symptoms.
Symptoms include:
- Fatigue
- Sluggishness
- Thinning of the outer third of eyebrows
- Hair loss
- Constipation
- Muscle aches (for me, after exercise)
- Depression
Of course, I may have depression and constipation (and other problems) because of other factors, but the test confirms that my thyroid could be the reason, or part of it.
In a way, this is good for me, because it gives me something to go on.
I don't want to take medicine, so will be searching for natural ways to treat this.
I hope I can find an answer and turn things around.
By fighting off this and the adrenal fatigue, I may be able to improve many of my current symptoms.
Iodine is meant to be good for thyroid function, and I have some of this in the form of Kelp supplements.
I've contacted my nutritionist to ask for further advice.
By the way, I got the job i went for.
Not sure if I mentioned.
laters.
Hey Indigo.. it sounds like you may have sub-clinical hypothyroidism. The key clinical indicators are delayed Achilles's tendon reflex (ATR) and slightly lower than normal body temperature. Hypothyroidism can also be a secondary effect of hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid).
Have you tried taking betaine hydrochloride supplements? You should buy the 650mg HCl w/ pepsin---keep taking the capsules 1 at a time while you are eating a meal---when you feel a burning sensation, that is your stomach telling you that you have enough acid (The next time you eat a meal of similar size you should take 1 less capsule than the amount that caused the burning sensation). Never take more than 8 capsules with any 1 meal. Isotretinoin screwed up my digestive tract to where I had horrible constipation. The thing that has helped me the most is taking 2-6 HCl capsules with each meal. This helped get rid of my fatigue, constipation, and increased my sense of well-being. If the HCl doesn't help much with the constipation---then try taking 2 tablespoons of xylitol sugar, and that should get things flowing again.
If you have a delayed ATR and slightly below average body temp I would highly recommend supplementing with a low dose of dessicated thyroid hormone (30-60mg/day) as it rarely induces side effects and is a more natural way of boosting your thyroid function. Try it for about a month, if it works you will feel significantly better---if not you can discontinue it and it won't have any negative effects on your thyroid function.
For anyone who cares... here is a status update on my condition. I have recovered from most of my isotretinoin side-effects (These lasted for 4 months after treatment and began to resolve themselves Sept 2011) except the sexual ones. I'm still working hard on treating my low libido and ED.
I just started doing a 3 week water fast---I am currently on day 2. Some long term isotretinoin and propecia users have claimed water fasting has led to permanent partial resolution of their persistent side-effects.
After that I'm using Xyrem/GHB to help restore receptor/neurosteriod balance, which I believe has been altered from my isotretinoin therapy.
Hello there,
I had 2 cures (9 and 6 months) of Accutane for 3 years. I read your posts and find them astonishing.
During my cures and blood-isotretinoin presence I noticed those effects (1,5 year and 1 year) :
- Higher agressiveness and overall energy, being judgemental and destructive
- Dry skin (not too bad for me)
- Dry lips (horrible)
- Muscle aches and skeletal aches (spine pains)
- Bloody hell sweaty (like tons of sweat for a 10 walk)
- Extreme drops of heat feeling (like being very hot / sweaty and become very cold with no temp variation)
- Incrased anxiety
- Increased sex drive
- Increased body hair
The 1st time was OK and after 1,5 year I felt good. 3 months after I had terrible breakouts and went for a 2nd cure. This time the effects lasted until today (3 years after) :
- Dry nose and clogged nose on morning (every fucking morning)
- Headache : never had headache before
- Dry lips (I never had dry lips) every time of the year
- Intense fatigue access (crazy fatigue coming from nowhere and killing me totally)
- Intense muscle pain in case of bad position (like, occurs in 5minutes, before it was 5 hours)
I don't know if everything is linked but I m sure some of them were due to Acc.
I monitor every 2 months my liver as some values are bad sometimes and I can not put any Retinoid ever on my skin or I got terrible headache (sic)

Congrats on the Job! Also, I wondered back then when you said they came back normal as most of your symptoms resemble low thyroid. For men with low thyroid it can cause testrone problems and libido and thyroid problems cause adrenal fatigue fyi!
Happy Holidays everyone - Jen
For anyone who cares... here is a status update on my condition. I have recovered from most of my isotretinoin side-effects (These lasted for 4 months after treatment and began to resolve themselves Sept 2011) except the sexual ones. I'm still working hard on treating my low libido and ED.
Welt, I don't want to come across as disparaging, but given the aforementioned, you are one of the lucky people who was probably destined to make a relatively quick recovery. Over at the propecia website they are forever lamenting about the fact that many people initially sign up and list their symptoms and then disappear within a relatively short period of time. People speculate that perhaps these sufferers stumble upon some little known supplement or pharmaceutical that cures them, and then they fail to bring this knowledge to the others who are still suffering.
It is brilliant that you recovered so significantly so quickly.
Indigo: I would ask for a full thyroid check (including reverse T3).

Modestm,
You may be right. I was extremely lucky to recover and my recovery was almost spontaneous. I was at the point where I could not experience deep sleep, my emotions were extremely blunted and my brain would often cycle through anxiety and depression. My dick was a numb piece of flesh attached to my body and my ability to get erections was completely lost. My sexual side-effects were bad, but my mental side effects were far worse---they prevented me from being able to function throughout the day. Everyday I felt like I wanted to drop dead because I lost control of my brain and felt like a lifeless emotionless robot. My main goal at the time was to restore my sleep cycle---as I could not function throughout the day without proper sleep. Something interesting to note---I tried Chamomile Tea to force myself to sleep, for some reason it made my side-effects drastically worse---but the next day I experienced full resolution of my sleep cycle, emotions began to return, lethargy began to subside and nocturnal erections, spontaneous erections returned. I was also taking strong natural anti-inflammatories at the time---Turmeric and Wobenzym N (As I heard several propeciahelp members feeling better on anti-inflammatories). This may have been by dumb luck---or there could be a connection.
Regardless---I think that some sufferers have the potential to benefit from strong GABA modulators such as GHB/xyrem (Based on Mew and Awor's 5AR withdrawal theory on how propecia/isotretinoin cause changes in neurosteriod synthesis).
Further---I hypothesize (I wish I had some scientific evidence on this) that fasting for long periods of time will cause the body to down-regulate/reset some of the genes that were persistently switched on/switched off by isotretinoin therapy. This theory is supported by a couple of side-effect sufferers who felt remarkably better after long-term water fasting. Water fasting is also an extremely powerful detoxification process and has been shown to reverse atherosclerosis, cure metabolic syndrome, decrease insulin resistance in diabetics, treat persistent fatigue, improve/cure fibromyalgia, improve concentration, improve mental acuity and significantly increase longevity.

Hey Man.
Gotta ask something.
While doing the fasting are you working or anything?
There's no way I'd be able to not eat whilst working.
I wish you the best of luck, because I believe it'll be good and I too have read of it helping to repair the body (most likely be giving the organs time to rest and revive).
Has anyone else had blood tests by the way?
I'd be interested to know if anyone had been shown to have thyroid/adrenal issues, and also white-blood count.
I feel fairly good about improving now.
I'm going to try VSL #3 and Glutagenics at some point, to aid my constipation and hopefully repair my gut.
I'll continue to take licorice root for my adrenals.
I'll look into repairing my thyroid (and maybe taking glandulars and HCI w/pepsin).
Thanks for the advice dude.

Holy crap. That's next on my list if the liver stuff fails.
Doing great at my new job. Making money! Fuck yeah!
Hello members [Edited image out]
Indigo I feel your pain.
Ive been in isotretonoin for 4 years!!
I started when I was 15. Doctor never told me possible side effects and also told me dose of isotretonoin I take is too small to cause anything on a male of my height & weight so I have never done bloodwork until now.
My symptoms start maybe 2 years after taking the drug? I dont know its has been gradual as I remember if I remember correctly. So neither me or my mother suspect accutane was the cause also what can you do but trust the doctor?
my side effects
- Dry Eyes (Severe) I dont remember when this started but I blink almost every 3 seconds
- Hair-loss (Including eyebrows, facial hair 'gaps' and body hair) dry scalp
- Slow Healing,
- Brain Fog/ Memory problems
- Anxiety
- "Extreme drops of heat feeling (like being very hot / sweaty and become very cold with no temp variation)""
I thought I was the only one with these.. like for example we go out of the house at night and 10 minutes later I am the only who suddenly starts feeling cold to the point of shaking
- Rosacea. My nose is red.. and it peels with just looking at it. My skin is super sensitive.
- Joint/Muscle super slow recovery after lifting - more than the average person
- Excessive sweating.. Its just stupid the amount of sweat, specially in head face,
so embarrasing, this was a nightmare in school
- Dry mouth, chellitis, my lips through the pass of years have gotten super huge.
Made me look like I was pouting, I even udergo a lower lip reductionhuge lips
being I white male with huge lips really destroyed my confidence.. I have lots of friends but almost none female friends I just dont have the confidence to be myself without suffering severe anxiety of how they are judging me.
- Fatigue
- Overall depression and confusion (*Rhetorical question* Is this a direct symptom or am I like it because of all the other side-effects stressing me out?)
I cant believe I found accutane was the problem 4 years after [Edited image out]e. At the moment I stopped taking it after consulting several doctors and all say the cause more than probably was isotretonoin. Doing blood work this week and hoping that in 3 months my symptoms dissapear. But after all the thing I have read all over the web symptons are pretty much permanent.
I am planning on doing the blood test tomorrow. I am scared of my liver since being a teen on accutane never stopped me from binging out on alcohol on weekends. I puked the day after even drinking the same as the other guys and they were all perfect the
anyone succesfully leaved behind all this symptoms?
Indigo Rush thats mad that you have thyroid out of range, mine too was out of range, and the person i spoke too who was suffering from sebborheic dermatitis (like me) post accutane also had thyroid out of range.
I've been looking into sea vegetables, kelp, dulse, modifilan etc for my thyroid. Also eating lots of fermented foods like sauerkraut, coconut water kefir, coconut meat kefir, kombusha etc for my gut. Modifilan can remove heavy metal toxins which are fat soluble...so hopefully it can remove other fat soluble toxins [Edited image out]
Thyroid labs abnormal 2 months after Accutane Course, Except I was dx with Graves. When I went to get my records from the derm, my last month or two showed low white blood count, but was never advised by derm.
See your Holistic doc and I agree have your t3 & t4 tested. Adrenal fatigue runs w/ thyroid disorder. Also I think you said your taking licorice root, FYI known to lower testerone in men so beware.
Also the natural medication Armour changed thier formula this past year and lots of hypothyroid pts aren't happy. 2 good sites are Mary Shoman's & a moderator from her fourm developed her own stop the thyroid madness. They have recommended supplements and natural ways to help low thyroid.
Good to hear from you, Chico.
How are you doing?
Is it only recently that you found out about your hypothyroidism?
Are you doing liver flushes or anything at the moment?
Where do you buy sea vegetables? In the UK Supermarkets, I doubt they sell them.
A video about the thyroid:
I'm doing well Indigo how about yourself? I come on here every now and then and read all the posts for hints and tips. I found out about my thyroid disfunction about 5 months ago, it's marginal like yours. I haven't done anything about it, i bought some dulse but i couldn't bring myself to eat it, it's pretty hideous tasting....[Edited image out]
I've been eating alot of fermented foods recently. Coconut water kefir, Sauerkraut (various different fermented veggies), Kombusha all sorts of fermented foods, and it does help digestion. Not to say it's a cure or anything but it makes things easier to digest. Lots of salads, sprouts (mungbean, alfalfa, sunflower sprouts) and i've been meaning to buy a twin gear juicer and a decent blender so i can start juicing dark leafy greens and making green smoothies, i'll get round to that very soon.
Havent liver flushed in quite a while, oh i started making bone broths, there delicious and they have helped my joint cracking, they contain loads of minerals and are notorious for healing the gi tract. I'm focusing on the gut, loads of cultured foods, detox teas etc to help digestion. But i have some modifilan capsules upstairs that i might try to get my thyroid back to normal.
White blood cell count is the immune system, 70% of your immune system recides within the gut just so you know. I've changed from coconut oil to coconut cream, i'll see how that goes.....coconut oil wasn't doing anything for me anymore.....
It's about finding our own path and getting to the root cause of our individual problems........... i wish you all the best and a very merry christmas day.
Joseph B is on point with a lot of what he's saying. I can't attest to the scallops/rice diet but fasting makes sense in both theory and practice, the problem is fasting for 30 days while working is impossible. That's something I will definitely try when I get the opportunity.
Nothing wrong with addressing suicide either, if you've been dealing with these persistent effects that limit your quality of life daily for years and are actively trying to fix them without much progress it is something you are going to consider.
Xyrem/GHB though... getting ahold of that would be difficult and I'm not sure that that wouldn't cause more problems in the long run. I took pretty high-dose benzos (Gaba-nergic drug) for 6 months 2 years to a year and a half ago and they made things worse overall rather than better. Not the same drug, but both are GABA-nergic and induce deep sleep, just a thought.

Until you fix your thyroid, you will not fix anything with the gut or immune. In fact most hypothyroid pts have low white blood count and slow moving gut, constipation etc.... The more you let it go the worse it will get and some things may not be reversible.

Someone I know actually synthesized his own GHB from GBL. This person found that while it initially delivered great sleep, the "amazingness" quickly wore off, and a sleep deficit began to build because the unnatural sleep wasn't sufficiently recharging.
This person went on to discover that proper diet, meal timing, and light control were more than sufficient to provide proper sleep.

Thanks Oilgirl ii'll definately look into sorting out my thyroid. Take care and thanks for the advice.
hello guys so I have almost all side effects listed except sexual & stomach problem while I was on accutane (4years)
Ive been about a week off and I am developing cysts again. Is this a good sign that my oil production was not damaged by isotretonoin?
I ask this because apprently people that continue with side effects continue with dry skin and no acne at all..

I just suggest you stay away from accutane full stop if it's causing you any side effects whatsoever, to be honest even if it isn't causing side effects it's probably the single most dangerous drug on the market today. You can cure acne with probiotic rich foods, cutting out pasturized dairy, eating whole natural foods and good hygiene...like using gentle products as opposed to chemical laden anti acne cleansers. Something like cetaphil gentle skin cleanser is very good and doesn't irritate the skin. Change your diet too Fruits / vegetables / nuts / wholegrains / good quality meats / probiotic rich foods / green juices (apple, celery, dark leafy greens) ....even the sauna can help tremendously with clearing acne.
theres no need to poison the body with toxic amounts of vitamin A (inducing hypervitaminosis A) to stop the Sebaceous glands from excreting oil. It's obsurd, only the medical industry would come up with that......cleaning up the diet and cleaning the bowels specifically can cure severe acne.
Has anyone been trying Maca?
If so, is it any good?
And do you take in capsule form, or powder?
Is it expensive?
Hope you're all doing good.
I'm feeling like shit to be honest.
I haven't but i know it's good for your libido if that helps. It is quite expensive you can get it in powder form from places like detoxyourworld in the uk. It's meant to be a decent hormone regulater as well. Are you taking anything for your thyroid yet?

Hey Chico..
You don't sound too good.
I know it can be difficult, but stay strong.
I've been feeling pretty good this past week.
Of course, I've had some downs, but I'm actively looking for the best instead of the worst.
Most of us here are in are 20's, and we talk about our lives being over.
It's not true.
I know it's not much, but I've really been enjoying video games again.
It'd got to the point where I wasn't allowing myself to enjoy simple pleasures.
I think it has something to do with my attitude.
I've read a lot of self-help books, and for the last few years have really wanted to do well.
I saw playing video games as a waste of time, and viewed my life as meaningless.
I've reading a really good self-help book at the moment, written by Jack Canfield.
It's called The Success Principles.
It's well written and gives you those 'inspired' moments.
I also picked up the original Chicken Soup for the Soul book, which I've yet to read.
It's important to recognise that people get thrown obstacles.
Sometimes something can seem terrible, and then it becomes a valuable life lesson that shapes you into a better person.
I also plan to read 'The Hunger Games' which is meant to be amazing.
I think I've finally got to the point of accepting this. I don't mean I'm going to live with it.
I mean, I'm not going to keep bringing it up. I'll stop feeling resentful to the medical industry and Roche.
Yeah, they did wrong, but it's not up to me to get back at them.
Maybe Karma exists, maybe not.
However, I'm not going to waste my energy, or life, on thinking 'what if'.
It has happened. I have to deal with it.
I used to eat terribly, and would have continued to.
I've learnt a lot about health, and continue to pick up new information.
There is a lot I haven't tried.
A lot of what seems a problem, is only me perceiving something as bad.
My anxiety for example.
I can't seem to stop feeling awkward and embarassed when in certain situations, and I worry about what people are thinking, such as 'He's got sore looking eyes'.
Thing is, nobody is thinking about you.
Yeah, they may notice. They may even whisper behind your back.
But most of the time people are thinking about their own problems.
I'm thinking about trying EFT (by getting a book) in order to 'fix' the part of my mind which assumes bad things.
I still think we're going to escape this.
Meanwhile, we need to realise we can only do so much.
Another example of wasting energy and time is this:
Going to work and being driven insane by an annoying boss/co-worker.
Then coming home and shouting about them to your partner.
That's not going to fix a thing.
And neither is getting angry.
We have to make the most of this situation.
Accept that it's happened; Realise we have learnt a valuable lesson; Continue to actively look for a way to improve the problem.
I'm going to be taking VSL#3, and hopefully that will sort out (or at least improve) by digestion.
If it doesn't work, I'll try more things.
Regarding my thyroid though...
I am currently taking Kelp (for iodine) in the form of a supplement, once a day.
I'm adding salt to my diet (sea salt, not standard).
I'm taking the licorice root for my adrenals. If you improve one, it should help the other as they are part of the same system.
I'm doing my best to enjoy things again. Sometimes my problems get in the way, i.e. eye floaters can spoil a nice sunny day, but it's vital to reduce stress while trying to improve.
I'm not sure there's much else I need to be doing for my thyroid?
