I finished a six month cycle of Accutane approximately a month and a half ago. Yet, I am still feeling very sun sensitive. When should I be able to sit in the sun again?

This is related to my post about sun sensitivity. Check out what a couple people had to say. Anybody else wanna provide info about their experience post-accutane and sun sensitivity? If they burned after? And if so, did that cause them to break out?

i wear 30 spf sunsense sunblock everyday and reapply every 4 hours so i haven't been very sensitive to the sun

and i've stopped around a month ago

are you wearing sunblock?

then again, it takes some ppl longer for the effects to wear out so i guess just wait a little longer :D

Hey! Yeah, I am in LOVE with Accutane! I haven't gotten a new zit for 3 months, compared to before Accutane when I would get a few new little guys daily!

Taylor, you tried going out in the sun for an extended period of time since you first posted this topic? If so, how'd it go?

I was not able to go out and tan until three months off of accutane. I am sure it is different for everyone, as side effects are with this drug. If you look at pictures of my history though, you will see four months off tane I was back to being extremely tan. The first month and the second month off of tane I went tanning for a little while but would always burn and I have an EXTREMELY hard time burning. Even without wearing sunscreen in the 90 degree heat of the south I never burned.

Just give it a couple of months, and don't overdo it. I got extremely burned on my back during accutane, and I still have sun spots from it!

I have been on accutane for about 3 weeks now, and my sensitivity to the sun has been increased, but only a tiny bit. Yes my skin is a lot dryer than normal, but I have spent more than 3 hours in direct sunlight and nothing has happened. My skin looks normal and I have even managed to gain a tan. I am yet to apply sunscreen!

It's been 9 months and I'm still photosensitive. Not as severe as when on Accutane (instant burning), but still sensitive. About 20 minutes of direct sun turns me pink and hurts. Some folks don't get photosensitive at all though so there's really no time frame we can give ya.

I've read studies on pubmed that say the evidence that Accutane makes you photosensitive is inconclusive. Basically some studies have found that about 5-10% of people on Accutane are slightly more photosensitive while on the drug, while other studies have found no difference in how photosensitive you are before and during treatment. The studies that found photosensitivity indicate that skin returns to almost normal sensitivity 1 month after stopping treatment. I've just come off Accutane so I don't have personal experience but for the people that say they are extremely photosensitive after accutane, maybe it's due to something else that you're taking?

I have been on Accutane twice. It did not help. My acne was the worst it ever was while I was on it.

The worst side effect was that it gave me permanent sun sensitivity. I am now essentially allergic to sunlight - exposed areas break out in a rash, and it has been over two years since taken the last dose of Accutane.

I have been off this medication for 11 years, and still cannot go out in the sun - this seems to be a permanent side effect for me. Prior to taking it, I could sit outside all day for swim or track meets (without sunscreen) and tanned very well - never burned. While taking this medication, when I went to an outdoor track meet as usual, I came back completely burnt. Since being off this medication, I feel sick whenever I'm in the sun, feel like I will pass out, and cannot tan anymore. And it is not likely to be caused by something as else, as this is the only prescription/antibiotic/etc that I have taken in the last 18 years or so.

This is the same for me. I finished my course 12 years ago and my skin does not tan anymore. It is a permanent side effect.
