Hey Max thanks a lot ...
I am very scared as you guys must have been when this all began. I will try to remain calm, which is hard. I have long hair. I know one looses more hair when it is long, but I am afraid that if I cut it, then people will notice that I getting bald more easily. Has anyone here lost so much hair as to have anyone else outside family notice. I was reading through Lamarr's post and I most say this guy is pretty though.
Best of wishes to all.. I will keep you guys updated.
What oils are you guys using to treat your scalp(i.e. emu oil, grapeseed..) and where do you guys buy it?

Max made it clear as to your chances of recovery/as to whether you will recover... I think people should always wait atleast 4-6 months before beginign to treat things properly. But i think things like minoxidil and essential oils are fine to use from early on.
I use quite a few things, including lasers, topical corticosteroids and essential oils. They keep my hair pretty stable.
As for the essential oils, i use a mix 40% emu, 20% jojoba, 20% grapeseed and 10% lavender. Try and make sure you get them from a reputible source.
Alot of people on hairloss forums are just discovering how well lasers (LLLT) works for hairloss. I have been using it for about 15 months and it works very well for tane hairloss. The topical steroids also remove most of the inflammation but they don't agree with everyone. I tried minox for a short while and that also worked well, but at the time i feel it interffered with my other accutane side effects so i stopped. I still keep it as an option for the future if i ever need it.
There are plenty of things you can do to keep your hair looking decent, but just try and relax for the mo. Give the essential oil mix a try first.
good luck
Where do you buy the oils. Can you tell us how you mix it? Thanks.

lamarr, I want to start on rogaine 2.5 years after stopping tane. I am afraid that it might cause an initial shed? Is there a chance that my shedding might increase at the beginning when i start rogaine? Also, can you give me instructions on preparing and buying the oil mix? thanks again.

Hey all,
Just another update. It's now been four months since I took my last Accutane pill...
So, just as I mentioned in my last update, things were progressing well. I was using Rogaine (and then Xandrox 5%) morning and night, and I didn't cut my hair for two months. It continued to grow, and there was no more shedding. My scalp felt 100% normal. And if I did see any hairs falling out, they were thick and healthy strands. I thought I was finally on the permanent road to recovery.
Just over the past couple weeks, though, I've noticed a change. I've started to see a subtle increase in shedding, and my hair feels much lighter and weaker. The strands I see on my pillow and on my hands when applying/styling products are limp and weak again, just as I had noticed after taking Accutane for about a month. I remember Andy mentioned he went through a couple cycles of shedding & regrowth, so is this what's going on? I have been under quite a bit of stress lately (getting mugged three weeks ago, and also getting sick last week that knocked me out for a few days...had to have antibiotics), but I don't think this would cause my hair to go limp all of a sudden. Or would it?
Anyway, I'm going to continue what I'm doing, which includes the following:
Xandrox 5% (morning and night)
Emu & grapeseed oil (on scalp, at night)
Aloe Vera (on scalp, in morning)
3000 mg Biotin (spaced out throughout the day)
Multivitamin (without Vit. A)
Antioxidant combination (Turmeric, Green Tea, White Tea, etc.)
Nioxin shampoo & conditioner
I went off of the Milk Thistle after two months, cuz I hear you should take it in intervals and not for long-term periods.
Mark/Lamarr, when do you think it's safe to go back on a regular multivitamin? My regular one (before I went on Accutane) had 70% of the DV of Vit. A (30% of which was beta carotene). Do you think it's ok to resume taking it?
Thanks all, and stay positive! We'll get through this.

I actually buy the oils from ebay...just look for the sellers with good 100% feedback, i trust this more than random internet sites and i think its a better way of judging quality anyway.
Just mix the 40% emu, 20% jojoba, 20% grapeseed and 10% lavender in a bottle, shake it up before each use so they aren't seperated. I actually use a special bottle that i get from the use of topical steroids, they have a small applicator to apply the solution directly to the scalp.
As for minox and other side effects, i used to have bad rosacea and flushing from tane and the minox i beleive made this worse because minox is a vasodialtor.

For me it didn't cause a shed, but even if it does the hair should grow back fairly quickly e.g. a month or so.

Looks like a solid regeme there dude!! i personally wouldn't take anything with vitamin A in again supplement wise and i recommend to anyone waiting a year or two post tane before supplementing. You get enough through your diet...
faccutane,
it;s still early for you to do something about it, try be very gentle when washing your hair using tepid water and gentle massage, wash every 2nd/3rd day not every day. i started losing some hair when 19 due to minocycline, im 25 now and defo not bald, despite losing countless hairs daily. dont brush too hard too, pat hair dry with towel. this just temp till you see some specialist or experienced people on here to help you!
take care dude

rian1983 .. thanks for the encouragement... It just seems that I loose so much hair everyday... it is hard not to worry. Were you on accutane?
hi,
me too i also lose hair everday now for 6 years, its maybe normal or to lose 50 a day i have read.
as long as i don't end up like donald trump with a cringe inducing combover then its ok.
yep i had a course of tane when 21 years old, it didnt increase shedding. minocycline definately caused my problems.
F*ck... Hang in there, like some have already told you, it's really too early in the process. You will notice a lot of shedding but don't worry it will slow down and eventually stop.
I started shedding 5 months ago, it sped up quite a bit when I started minoxidil 3 months ago.
It does get worse before it gets better. I'm quite stressed myself because my hair is extremely thin (a lot of guys complain that their hair is thin, but my hair is extremely thin, so much you can see my scalp clearly and I haven't cut my hair since I started shedding 5 months ago.)
Unfortunately for me, I've lost a lot of my new grown in hairs as well, but I am hoping this tapers off and eventually hair cycles return to normal.
I have a lot of regrowth, but the amount of hair I have lost is extreme, about 60% of the hair on the top of my head and hair at one of my temples disappeared. However it is growing back, and I am hoping that in the coming months I will start to see the regrowth from the Minoxidil.
I'm not a patient person, and I'm definitely obsessive with my looks, so this thing really sucks. But the good thing is is that it will grow back. Fortunately all the hair I have growing back is the same thickness and consistency as my other hairs, so its just a waiting game.
Max told me it would take 8 months or so. I figure now that the shedding has stopped that by the end of the year my hair should be pretty close to normal and I can put this behind me.
From what I've read, most people do recover from Accutane induced TE. There are clearly those who do not, and there are those who are prone to MPB who end up seeing MPB come on earlier in life. But by and far, folks recover.
TE lasts up to 6 months normally, then I would say within 6 months to a year you can expect a full recovery.
Some days are worse than others for those of us who have to deal with this, but the key is to remain positive and remember that your hair density will increase, regardless.
My strategy to feeling better about my hair thinning is that I've grown my hair long so that its not as noticeable and I wear a hat whenever I leave the house.
The only thing I am doing right now for my hair is 5% Xandrox morning and night, and a lot of hoping and praying!
Good luck and stay positive!
Matt
Thank you for this informative post. I've been off Accutane for two months and was beginning to panic since I didn't see much improvement in terms of hair loss. As a girl with very light skin and very dark hair that is already fine, it's not easy to disguise. Hopefully it comes back

I just want to say that diffuse AA, that is in no way related to MPB. Is normally the cause of long term hairloss post accutane. Those of us that shed diffusely over our scalps and even shed body hair excessively have diffuse AA. Nothing to do with MPB.
Does anyone want to comment on what is the difference of beginning to lose hair say 2 months after finishing 'tane... as suppose to beginning to lose hair during treatment? Is there a partern to the outcome? I was just curious because I began after like a month and a half.... Anyone had similar experience?
For those of you who have experienced diffuse hair loss from accutune, there are products out there that work really well to mask the hair loss. I currently use a product called toppik, which is basically a colored powder that you put on your hair which reduces the contrast between your scalp and your hair. There are other products out there too like dermmatch and prothik which also work. I have spoken to doctors who have said that it is not harmful to your hair. It is a bit of a pain in the ass to put it in everyday but it makes it easier to go out in public and not constantly stress about how your hair looks. My hair has been fucked up for over 3 1/2 years, but it still looks like I have a full head of hair with products in it.
I've been shedding since december. I started noticing less shedding last month.. my specialist said it was a sign that the TE was ending. Now I'm noticing the shedding has increased almost to the point it was in the beginning. Are changes like this a good sign? Are these likely signs of TE or AA? I've also had scalp irritation, itching/burning when I skip a shower.
THANKS
So I thought I was on the road to recovery and noticed that my hair was growing in pretty well, with exception of some newer hairs falling back out.
Then in the last few days, since I got my hair cut for the first time in 6 months, I've started shedding again like I was a few months ago.
I'm pretty much worn out by this ordeal, and my hair is very much visibly thin.
This will be the 3rd shedding I've gone through, the first initial shedding back in December/January, the second was in March and lasted about 2 months, and now a third shedding mid-June (started the day after my birthday.)
Anyone know how long the shedding will last? and if these cycles of shedding are going to keep going on forever?
I'm sure nobody can give me a definitive answer, but if someone who has had a similar experience could let me know that would be great.
My regrown hair is the same consistency as the hair that has fallen out, so I don't see miniturization, but I have more scalp than hair on the top of my head and look like a sick cat.
All of this because I was prescribed accutane to get rid of oily skin... how fun!
Thanks
Matt
Thanks Max.
I've spoken to Andy because his experience has been similiar (with exception I have no miniturization or scalp inflamation. However I do have a little bit of redness from using Minoxidil)
He suggested that the Minoxidil might be the reason for the shedding cycles.
What do you think? I'm not sure if I should stay on it and wait through the shedding cycle or if I should go off and see if my hair stops cycling through this 6 weeks of shedding, then 6 weeks off, then shedding again.
My hair is so thin that I have to go out with a hat on, another 6 weeks of shedding and I'm toast.
I imagine if I stop minixodil now it wouldn't have any effect on this shed, since the hairs have already stopped growing for some time and the hairs are now just coming loose. It almost seems like Minoxidil caused another bout of TE, because my hair intially shed 3 months after I started on a 3 week cycle of Accutane, and now my hair is shedding a little over 3 months after I started using minoxidil.
I can only speculate.
Thanks for any and all advice.
Matt
Hi electroshock
I don't think you should worry because people without scalp itching or other form of inflammation tend to recover with time even when without treatment.
Hi Matt
Yes, most likely the reason why you are still shedding alot of hair is due to Minoxidil. Minoxidil tends to make you lose alot of hair (at first), but the good news is - the hair will not only grow back stronger but thicker as well. And you do not even need to worry about your hair loss and use Minoxidil for long since your hair loss is due TE. The main reason why accutane hair loss victims use Minoxidil is to "wake up" the hair follicles (still in sleeping mode after accutane) to regrow hair again. You will definitely recover soon, in fact I feel that you have already recover.
