Big Problem!! Please Help
Hi, so I used accutane for around 2 months around 2.5 years ago. After then, I haven't used any medications. I experienced hair loss and hair thinning ever since. Since it wasn't too noticeable and I had 100% coverage I disregarded it. However, I recently went on antibiotics, called Doryx, for a month. I have for some reason experienced dramatic hair thinning and hair loss. I never knew that antibiotics could cause hair loss, which is why I went on them for a month. What should I do? Any suggestions? Thanks. Most of the hair thinning and loss is on my left temple region. It's been 2 months since I used the medication. Only taking biotin, B complex, and fish oil currently. Washing hair with tea tree oil shampoo.
Hey guys I just wanted to ask if for those who experienced a scalp rash... does it ever go awayA? I still loose hair although it seems to grow back. I see tons of new hairs coming out, but I still have that annoying rash that wont go away. I mentioned before that the hair i loose is mainly on the top of my head.. and curiously my rash is on the sides and the back near the bottom where i hardly shed at all. I try not to touch it. I am using Nizoral and a steroid foam but that is not helping much. Actually when I apply the foam it tends to get worst! Anyone had the same problemA? Lamarr I know you experienced scalp inflammation... any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks
Max- said:Hi faccutaneDid you experience scalp folliculitis as well? Anyway, you can try topical Salicylic acid 3% to suppress the itching and rashes.
Yes Max I really do not know what it is. I think it is dermititis becuase I have an extremely oily scalp!!! The weird thing is that my acne has not returned. I get bumps in my scalp which then turn crusty, pianful and flaky. I take showers every day.. and the problem seems to persist. Then obviously when i touch my head tons of hair comes out. I tried Nizoral shampoo this is week 2 and so far no results yet. Myabe this has nothing to do with accutane hairloos since i remember i started shedding hir before this annoyance! Agh!! I am so desperate to know what the heck is it that we have.
Hi faccutane
Kinda surprise that your scalp is still oily even after you took large dose of accutane. Hopfully, what you are experiencing now is "oil" folliculitis rather than dermatitis. I will recommend you to try NeoStrata Problem Scalp Medicated Shampoo which contain 3% Salicylic acid and 6% Mandelic acid or/and Scalpicin Anti-Itch Liquid Scalp Treatment which contain 3% Salicylic acid, Menthol, Tea Tree Oil and Aloe Vera.

Hey bubbly_girl, I had hair loss that came shortly after my course and I am a female. Some was partly due to the hormonal problems (thyroid) and low iron levels accutane gave me, some of the hair came back when thoose were corrected, but it is still pretty thin, very dry and texture is not the same at all.
I still get hair that sheds too just not as much.
It may just be my eyes playing tricks on me or something. But certain spots in my scalp that I haven't seen grow in ages are starting to have peach fuzz. My hair doesn't feel as dead anymore and it's much more manageable.
I've been trying to pin point what exactly it was to bring to bring forth the sudden change but who knows I'm excited. I've started to play basketball again, I've cleaned up my diet and developed a workout regimen, and am taking both a multivitamin and glass of whey protein every single day. Something triggered the sudden growth but whatever it was, I can't complain.
Just thought I'd mention.
I took Accutane once a decade ago and hair loss started for me arround month four and continued for the six months of treatment. I would wake up with lots of hairs on my pillow and when I would wash my hair and look at my hand I would see ten or so strands. Enough for me to take notice and wonder what was worseahaving acne or premature balding.
Five years after my first Accutane treatment the acne slowly started coming back. So now, ten years later I am currently on my sixth and last month of treatment. Knowing I had lost hair the first time I decided to be proactive. I did a lot of research including some on these forums. I decided on taking vitamins to help keep me from losing hair. I began taking a B-Complex, Biotin, Milk-Thistle regiment. Two months into the treatment I discussed what I was taking with my dermatologist. He said it was good as far as making the hair stronger but said Finasteride was really the only thing that might help keep me from losing hair.
I was given a prescription for Finasteride and to date have not had any hair loss at all outside of a strand a week or so that I happen to notice.
Also I used a Biotin shampoo and conditioner I picked up at the Vitamin store. Also a Biotin hair thinning serum I use at night. So unfortunately I can't tell you what did the trick. But I can say that I did "everything" to avoid any hair loss. And it worked.
Any updates?
And to the above poster...how long did it take for your hair to return to normal after the first course?
I don't know that it ever did really...I never really noticed bald spots or a receeding hairline but it is possible my hariline receeded. I have a higher hairline and it may have receeded further but I can't say with certainty as I don't have before and after photos.
It just more worried me seeing my pillow covered in hairs and them falling out in my hands. I'm thinking it was more of an all over thinning whichi is why I didn't notice it other than by seeing the hairs.
But I do recall that my hair stopped falling out within a month off treatment.
okk, basically i stopped accutane over 7 months ago and im still experiencing hairloss. Im pretty sure its only TE but still i kinda want to fix it. If anyone has any type of suggestions on any kind of shampoo i should be using or even a little regime they do everyday that would be greatly appreciated. thank you

I took accutane for 3 weeks more than 10 months ago and my hair has continually gotten worse. I had a lot of hair grow back initially, just to fall back out months later. I am convinced that this problem does not resolve easily or quickly, however I am hanging on to the idea that it will eventually improve.
I have lost more than 70% of the hair from the top of my head, even with long hair in a comb-over style you can still clearly see my scalp.
Up until I took accutane I had no hairline recession or what could be considered a mature hairline. however accutane caused my hair to recede at my temples, one side much worse than the other. The entire top of my head is a lost cause.
I have been using minoxidil 5% since march, and in 6 months I have not seen any of the results of using minoxidil, however I am going to keep using it until the end of the year in the hopes that it can help wake the dormant hair follicles.
I've gotten passed regretting haven taken accutane, since it was prescribed to me for oily skin (I never had acne), however looking in the mirror just down right sucks and I don't leave the house without a hat.
My shedding is continuous, it comes in cycles, right now I am on the 6th week of my 3rd shedding cycle. I had an inital shedding at my hairline, then over the past 10 months its mostly been on the top of my head, a little more on the left side of my head, the same side where the temple receded.
Hair is growing back and has been since day one, but it just falls back out after a while.
Its too bad that nobody has any concrete idea why this happens and how long recovery takes.
As for treatment, I just use Minoxidil 5% twice a day, and head and shoulders shampoo for the dry scalp that the Minixodil (Xandrox actually) gives me.
Since my family has no history of MPB, and at 32 I still had a full head of hair, I'm convinced that within a few years I should be back to normal or near-normal. If I had a family member on either side of my family with MPB I would be concerned, but although this really sucks, I'm convinced that eventually I will see improvements, I just have to be patient.
I hope that things improve for you as well.
Best of luck.
Matt
I forgot I am also using nizoral shampoo 2% twice a week.
BTW, I see a lot of people writing that they think their hair thinned on accutane, but for those like me, there is no thinking it has thinned out, it is so obviously visible and everyone notices.
I honestly never see hairs on my pillow, but if I wash my hair in the sink my hands are covered, and if I comb my hair or brush with my hands, I can shed about 200+ hairs at one time not including the hairs that I shed out that morning in the shower. I would consider this to be a pretty serious case of acute TE.
Anyways, whatever it is, it sucks crap, and doctors have not the slightest clue. Any derm you go see will tell you you have MPB, and others look confused when you say accutane caused your hair to fall out.
good times, good times!
Anyway, people who experience accutane hair loss should really give one or two of this few products a try.
1. Nizoral Shampoo
Active Ingredient - 1% or 2% Ketoconazole
2. Scalpicin Maximum Strength Liquid Scalp Itch Treatment.
Active Ingredient - 1% Hydrocortisone
3. Scalpicin Anti-Itch Liquid Scalp Treatment.
Active Ingredient - 3% Salicylic Acid
4. NeoCeuticals Problem Scalp Medicated Shampoo with Conditioner.
Active Ingredients - 3% Salicylic acid and 6% Mandelic Acid
It isn't a cure but it will help your scalp feel alittle better.
Electroc shock.... Accutane modifys the immune system pretty significantly and accutane induced hairloss is quite often diffuse alopecia areata....an auto immune condition.
I still use topical steroids to help supress the inflammation and shedding, also use essential oils and lasers to aid regrowth. These things all help but nothing as of yet can stop my shedding, i still lose way more than pre tane and the only time the shedding stops is when i become ill (my immune system becomes 'distracted' and turns on the invading pathogen instead of my hair!!.
I forgot I am also using nizoral shampoo 2% twice a week.

Let me get this straight you didn't have acne problems but took Accutane just to get rid of oily skin? You know having oily skin isn't a bad thing. Actually protect the skin and keeps it elastic, hence you don't have wrinkles.
