The answers I got from my doctor about hair loss

Just looking for a little advice from the Varsity Team over here battling this DAMN hair loss. I'm a 27 year old male. I took accutane when I was 16 with no adverse side effects other than the usual drying out. In February 09 I decided to try some low-dose accutane to combat some moderate acne. I decided to try 10mg a day in order to reduce possible side effects like hair loss. Well to my surprise about a week into my regimen I started shedding quite a bit in the shower. I was bummed but thought, "Well, it's just a little bit, I've got some thick hair. I'll keep with the regimen for at least a month." A week later it was getting worse so I decided I better quit it all together. So my second course of accutane of 10 mgs a day lasted exactly 2 weeks. It is now 9 weeks since my last pill of accutane and I'm still shedding hair at an alarming rate. Been counting the last few days and range between 150-200.

My question to all of you who have dealt with this is should I take some serious action right now with prescriptions like minoxidil or steroids? Will it cease soon naturally due to the low dosage and short duration or is that irrelevant? I've been taking copious amounts of zinc, biotin, vitamin c and I haven't seen any help at all. It's becoming quite noticable in the sun and when my hair is wet.

Another important question is when did most of you start to see some regrowth. I went to a derm Monday and she saw nothing new which really scared me. I will mention it is diffuse effluvium style but seems to be a bit more prevelant across the top of my scalp..

All feedback is appreciated! Thank you all so much and I hope things are looking up for all of you in this horrible fight.

if you have that bulb at the end of your hair does that mean you automatically have Diffuse Alopecia Areata? or no?

Hi pcloadletter, I will suggest you to wait it out for a few months more and see if it recover on it own before you seek any treatment.

Thanks Max. Really tough dealing with this. The more research I do the tougher it gets. I will mention it is occurring diffusely across my entire body, not just the scalp. Reading about the Alopecia Areata is a bit disturbing too. Especially when the hairs I am losing do in fact have a bit of the tell tale exclamation point look to them.?.? Who knows...

Hello, I have tried minocycline, BP and differin. But I really have doubt in these prescription drugs, as I do get frequent cystic acne and pastules. I was thinking about going on accutane, but hair loss really stopped me in considering taking accutane.

The thread "Accutane and Hairloss" is nearly 2 years old. Have you recovered yet??

And do you recommand Accutane?? Do you have anything in mind that will help with acne, nearly as good as accutane??

Grr, if hairloss wasn't one of the side effects, I would have been on accutane in no time..

I thank you for spending your time reading and helping.

Cheers.

No most of us haven't recovered. The thing is accutane alters your DNA so alot of the side effects you can develope are permanent. All the hair on my body sheds at an increased rate but i have kept my head hair pretty thick using various treatments. Don;t get me wrong though the underlying hairloss is still there and would be as agressive as ever without treatment.

Aww I feel for you lamarr. I would nearly kill myself if I had signs of losing hair. So, I would have to gamble between losing acne or losing hair? If that is the case, I would just keep my acne, I'm sure in 3years in time, that they'll find a cure. Or maybe accutane with less or no side effects, which sounds pretty much a cure for me.

Until that day comes, I would have to stuggle with acne.

Live sucks with acne.

Rockstar there are plenty of very effective things out there, which work on all forms of acne.

I personally now use a combo of topical niacinamide and ibuprofen. I also used/use light therapy for acne very succssfully aswell.

Both of those things will clear most people.

Lamarr .

Can you please tell me your regime regarding to your topical niacinamide and ibuprofen. As I just heard about this acne treatment. Right now, I'm using Differin Gel 0.1% and starting to wean myself off Minocycline. Maybe I will give this topical treatment a shot, and see how it goes.

Oh and also should I quit using Differin? If using topical niacinamide and ibuprofen, or is it Okay to use it together? As I think Differin does help my face to be in control sometimes.

Oh and about the light therapy, it seems pricey, I'll do that when I get some cash on me.

Sorry for going off topic, I can't PM Lamarr, as your inbox seems to be full.

Gosh you're so popular

Thanks for helping once again.

Could anyone here please give me Dr. Chu's contact details? I hope he can give me some answer to my stubburn acne problem. I think I'll have to see him privately as I don't fall in his NHS zone.

Thanks.

Good choice, I wish I had the luxury of knowing tane could cause hair loss. If I could do it over I wouldn't even touch tane.

Okay people I took Accutane for around 2-3 months, I was on 2 pills a day for around 2 months and 4 a day for a few weeks (after the increase in dose I noticed the hairloss).

The hairloss was bad for about 3-4 months but then stopped although my right side suffered slightly more than my left side so my hair has been changed...no problems however I still have parts missing..I can see re-growth but it is veryyyyyy slow isnt it haha. My hair density is a whole lot better than it was, I've been off the tane now for around 6 months so how much longer will it be for hair to go back to normal?

I noticed that what I have is probably te...my aunite had te after giving birth and her hair was still re-growing when the baby was 12 months so it takes a while does it?...her hair is back to normal now tho :D

If you are sure that it was Telogen Effluvium then you shouldn't worry because you will definitely recover with time.

Hi fuxthis,

All I can say is, so long as you didn't experience scalp inflammation like scalp pain, burn and itch then you are going to be fine within months.

Hi,

so I have been lurking on this forum for around 2.5 years. I have definitely experienced hair loss and hair thinnning that hasn't really recovered. I am finally starting to do something about this. Today I went to the derm and he basically gave me two options: propecia or rogain. What is your experience using these two medications. Which do you recommend? The only thing that worries me is the temple region. Will I be able to regrow hair where there is none already, or will it just strengthen the existing hair line? Thanks for all your input.

Hi ayelens,

I would like to warn you regarding propecia. I do not know exactly what kind of side effects that it can cause you. But I do know that this is a dangerous drug that is known to ruin life. There are people whose life had been ruin by propecia. Stick to Minoxidil I would say. Plus the hair loss you are experiencing isn't due to male pattern baldness, so there is really no point for you to take the risk on propecia.

Is it possible that rogaine might make the hair loss worse? I just don't want to go on these supplements and then $%^ make my hair even worse!

Rogaine will definitely make you shed slightly more at first, but it stated that the lost hair will be replace by stronger thicker hair. Personally I cannot use Rogaine as it tends to cause irritation on my scalp. If possible, I will suggest you to start out with Rogaine 2% just to like your scalp adapt to the product then slowly you can walk your way up to Rogaine 5%.

But isn't it true that as soon as you stop rogaine all your new hair sheds and you start from scratch all over?

It depends, if your hair loss was due to accutane then maybe some of the hair that was regrowth from the used of Rogaine will stay. It act as a wake up call for those follicles that are still in sleeping mode. Anyway, use a dropper to apply Rogaine onto your scalp instead of spraying. Dropper works so much better when it comes to applying topical products onto scalp.

Hi faccutane,

There were a few chaps who managed to recover from accutane induced hair loss but most probably what they were experienced back then was Telogen Effluvium. Scalp inflammation meaning Scalp pain, itching, pimples and tingling. Since your hair loss just started then you should give it a few more months to see if it recover on it own before you start any treatment.
