I posted a few months back that after taking accutane I noticed within a month that my hairline just didn't look that good anymore but I wasn't sure if my hair was falling out. When I took a shower I would see maybe one hair one my hands and considered this normal. So I took my dosage of 40mg and dropped it down to 20 mg a day just to be safe. I continued this for a month and a half and the hairs on my hand in the shower went from 1 to 2 to 5 to 10-20 a day. Now I'm positive my hairline changed DRASTICLY and have stopped taking this crap. I haven't had a haircut since and can tell you for a fact my hair just isn't growing as fast. I don't even think I can spike my hair anymore if I wanted to without it looking horrible. To make matters worst I have lost my job due to the economy (I worked for a bank) and can't even go to a doctor since my medical insurance ended.
This is WAS second coarse of accutane with the last one being over a year and a half ago. The first time I remember having trouble styling my hair and noticed my temples ever so slightly but I can say for a fact that my hair got better over time. I don't remember studying it everyday past when i first noticed it happening because I remember people saying your hair will get dry and crappy. I do remember over the summer though going oh wow it got alot better I'm sure of it. I guess it was just temporary like the package said thats why I didn't hesitate to go on it this time.
I would like to add some information to the people losing their hair and staying on the stuff by lowering their dosages. I don't claim to be an expert on the topic but if accutane causes telogen effluvium it takes time for it to run its coarse. Basically accutane messes up the hairs growth cycle so just lowering the dosage you may not know that helped untill its to late. I don't think you will notice the difference lowering your dosage had on your hair in a month and then lowering it more because of that. I think the only way you would know for sure is after many many months. Maybe the damage will be less though in the end? My best advice is to stop it all together.
I just added a new reply because I don't want my question to get missed in my rambling . Oh I forgot to add I am 27 and all my older relatives still have their hair unless they are 60+ and then their hair thinned evenly. Since I can't go to a doctor now without it costing me a small fortune what is the name of the topical steroid Lamar had success with in slowing down the shedding? I want to make sure I try and get the right stuff. Also how do you apply it with this issue?
Im going to be starting accutane this week taking 40mg/a day and am very worried about hair loss. I've decided to take some supplements that are designed to make your hair healthy and for it grow better. Do you think this might help me in anyway to maybe counteract me losing any hair?
Im extremely nervous about this. My sis took accutane when she was 16, her hair started to fall but its nothing noticeable. She still feels her hair falls more than it should when she washes and brushes it.
Hi guys. It's been awhile since I last posted so I wanted to come back and check on how everyone's hair loss is coming along. Lamarr, ItHappens? How are you holding up?
In 2 months I will be "losing hair" for 2 years! I can't believe that some of us have been around that long looking into this problem. Although I still feel like I loose a lot more hair then I did before accutane, I think my hair is pretty much back to normal. I have some comparison pictures and to me it seems like my hair is back to normal. I've even gotten comments from people lately about how thick my hair is. So I know it's stressful (and I still feel like I'm losing a lot of hair), but just be patient and the problem should end eventually. I've been trying to just ignore all the hair I'll lose in the shower and get back to normal. Here are some photos:

my naturpathic doctor seems to be going back and forth like my derm. Also blaming it on genetics but i'm like urhh i never had a hair problem before accutane. Anyways the bulb of my hair is week if I could just find something that will keep it strong. All these vitamins i'm taking and massages are fustrating. My naturpath now wants me to shave my head to apply this cream. urhhh
has anyone regrown hair with emu oil?
man i could of bought a new car with all this money i'm spending. I also rather have acne then have hair loss
lamarr1986 said:I still shed ALOT if i stop everything, but i use steroids, essential oils and lasers. Also take a systemic drug for lupus now which also helps stop the inflammation (and thus the damage to the follicles).[Edited link out]
Your hair looks good, man. I don't think it matters for you, honestly, you'd look good with the bald look.
My hair is super thick all around now, but I'm still somewhat worried about my hair line. It's all jagged and I'm not sure if it's receded at all, but it's worrying me. A receding hair line would really not make any sense to me as I'd be the only bald male in my family... at 21, so it's confusing the hell out of me. I'm thinking about going to my derm and letting them exam for minituration. At least that could be some peace of mind for me.
I've decided to just start hitting the gym and gain some weight and maybe that'll help me feel better about the whole situation..
Right now I'm just using Baby shampoo. Its actually working pretty good for me.
The only thing I'm worried about is that I don't have a conditioner. But I'm planning to switch from aloe vera to Emu oil to moisturize my scalp which will work sorta like a conditioner.
Aloe vera is working for me but I noticed white flakes that comes from the aloe and I would have to wash my hair 2-3 times for them to actually come out.
I've now been using rogaine for about a week and my hair is falling out even faster. I actually wake up in the morning and see some on my blanket. I'm hoping its my new hair growing in causing this. The overall quality of the hair I do have does seems to me improving though. I've now been off accutane for a month and a half and and my skin and lips are returning back to not being dry. My body aches and pains are also going away. I'm hoping that the increase in my hair falling out is the new hair comming in behind it. The rogaine package says you will see an increase in hair lose for a few weeks. I know its way to soon to see an improvement from Rogaine but maybe when the accutane hair lose reverses you will lose your hair faster for a while too. Thin hairs falling out and making room for thicker hairs. I am also only applying the rogaine to my temples and behind my hair line a few inches with a q-tip. It would still be way to hard for me to apply it to the top of my scalp. I am losing hair from everywhere though even the sides of my head where its shaved short. I can tell from the lenght of the hair on my hands when I shower (there are really short hairs too). If it was normal MPB I couldn't imagine the hair on the sides of my head falling out. It seems to be falling out evenly from everywhere but most noticible at my hairline and temples for the simple reason of that area being in front. I will keep everybody posted.
I have a question about the topical steroids. How do I apply it to my head and in what order if I am using rogaine? Do I apply it to my entire head or just in my hairline where the thinning is visible and i can actually reach my scalp with a q-tip? I can't imagine working a topical steroid into my scalpe over my entire head or do I have to? That would also use the tube up very fast wouldn't it?

Hey dude,
You can apply the steroid cream to the hairline area, but for the rest of the scalp you can use somethign called a scalp solution. This comes as a liquid and an applicator designed to allow the steroid to be applied directly to the scalp.
This is what i do every day,
In reponse to the other questions, i think the steroids help the most to prevent further loss of hair follicles, but for stimulating regrowth i think the lasers and essential oils are best.
And yeah that is my GF, it helps to have someone who doesn't mind you doing all these things for your hairloss lol. David i think working out is a great idea, it can directly help the hairloss quite alot....
Good luck with that man!!
Edit: i said hair, i meant directly to the SCALP.
Minoxidil, 1 hr later the steroid (steroid once per day at night). then the emu oil and whatever you want about 30 mins after that. If you wash your hair once per day, you can do all of this before you wash your hair, just make sure its an hour AFTER anything was applied.
spent a few hours reading from the beginning of this post. im wondering if anyone has actually stopped shedding? has anyone had any positive results?
im 2 weeks in to the hair loss so im trying to get some perspective.. but it seems like once you start shedding... its probably going to continue for almost a year? has anyone here actually stopped shedding hair and started to grow it back after a year?
also, I wanted to say thanks to everyone who has posted here. lamar, andy, mikey, ithappens, david.. anyone else i forgot.. julian... thanks everyone!
Thank you so much for your reply. I will switch to minoxidil solution for easier application once I have used up my 3 month supply of the foam. The reason I went for the foam is because it was supposed to have alot less side effects, but what good is it if I can't get the stuff down past my hair into my scalp. I am going to try termovate hair lotion 0.05% Clobetasol and hope that stops my shedding.
Has anybody considered trying emu oil capsules? I see some people were taking fish including myself. I actually was directed by the eye doctor to take fish oil since my eyes don't produce enough tears. I blame this on my first run of accutane since it does cause dry eyes. I don't recall my eyes always being this dry. Emu oil is still a pretty new concept and maybe the capsules will work better then fish oil?
Bro i would be very carefull with anything that contains omega 3.... I know it sounds very strange but you just need to take my word when i say alot of people who have taken tane respond badly to fish/flaxseed oil. The omega 3's seem to sometimes cause inflammation and even additional side effects.
If you want to use clobetasol 0.05% i recommend you apply this EVERY other day across your entire scalp and ONCE daily to the hairline. The reason for this is that when you apply the clobetasol daily, quite a number of people get folliculitus i personally don't find it much of an issue because it can't be seen through my hair, just thought i would let you know.
Betnovate once daily does not cause this...

hey dude, to put things into perspective it can take anything up to two years or more for this to resolve. Obviously in some cases it never does, but actions can be taken to prevent it from getting bad. Don't get to worked up over it.
Live and learn, I'll get Betnovate lotion next time I order. I just used up the last of my fish oil so I'll stop using that as of today. To be totally honest it didn't help with my dry eyes anyway. As for the temovate how long should 75ml last if applying it to my entire scalp every other day?
BTW the steroids probably won't stop the shedding completely. But when used over time will help thicken up your hair and allow coverage to improve in general. When you cut the shedding down by say 50% you end up with twice as much density. It also prevents the hairline from receeding quickly. I may end up going back on the minoxidil now that my tane induced rosacea is gone.... I'm pretty confident that anyone who uses minox and dermovate on the hairline will maintain things for atleast a decade...
Hi guys,
Do you know much about Minoxidil 15% (xandrox). I am currently on 12.5% which is working fine but I thought to try 15% this time round if it makes any difference. My main reason to switch is the price difference. Apparently xandrox will cost me much lesser than my current 12.5%.
Also it is recommended not to use these topical steroids like dermovate for long time as it could lead to skin thinning. Its got other side effects as well which is why it should not be used on daily basis as well. Are you guys considering this?
Cheers!!

REW12345,
My shedding has stopped dramatically after about 2 years. I'm 4 months from my 3 year mark and my hair is still a mess. Even thought my shedding is very low now my hair doesn't seem to be growing back and is still thin. I'm hoping to see significant regrowth during 2009.
By then if I don't see improvements then
