well i met with my derm again a few days ago to discuss where i'm at and all. basically my hair loss has slowed down to the point where i lose 15-25 hairs a day, and it's not the mass shed it once was. however, i have started to shed vellus hairs and i have not really had any regrowth especially in the front part of my scalp. anyway, since I've started to shed vellus hairs now i have basically come to the conclusion along with my derm who suggested it might be a strong possibility that the TE that accutane caused me has in turn caused me to go right into MPB. It's a tough thing to come to grips with but i have decided to accept the fact and move on. While i can't say that i am willing to take propecia right now i am going to look into getting a hair piece over the summer so that i can sort of do it before it gets bad and anyone notices. the thing is everyone who is suffering posts about derms and others saying accutane hair loss isn't permanent and that everyone they know of has recovered etc. so in my case you have to ask is this really true then? well the answer to that is yes and no. The thing is your derms and others are right in the sense that everyone will recover from accutane hair loss or the TE caused by it. As in my case, my hair loss is slowing down as it has and it will probably get even slower as the months go on. the thing is i was probably predestined to lose my hair one day, but due to the massive hair loss TE causes and the hair cycle for each hair lasting from 3-7 years my hair loss has started a good 5-10 years earlier than it would have, or at least has become more noticeable in a much quicker amount of time. i think this would explain that as i lost hair i didn't really regain any and others on here have noticed the hair immediately regrowing in. I mean I have noticed a few random hairs coming back, but after seeing one strand that just came through today on my front hairline it is so thin and fine and barely noticeable. That in essence is miniaturization so there is no doubt in my mind I have MPB now. It's tough to accept but i have and it kind of helps to have closure to the whole deal because i can move on from here and all. Good luck to you guys dealing with it.
hy guys.... i must tell you that i suffered a massive hairloss in the first 2,3 months with accutane , but after this my hair didnt fall as before.. lets say that it was normal for an accutane treatment, but still thin.
And i guesss that my new shampoo helped me very much: Head&shoulders blue!

Ithappens,
First, what you see are probably not vellus hairs. Vellus hairs are hairs two to three millimeters long and completely unpigmented. What you probably do see are miniaturized hairs.
More generally, everyone has miniaturized as well as vellus hairs. The ratio of terminal (normal) hairs to vellus ones is about seven to one ([Edited link out]). In other words, for every seven terminal hairs, a person normally has one vellus hair. I bet that's the ratio you see when the hair you are losing falls out. Right?
One claim that really upsets me - though I have only seen it once on this board - is when people suggest that our hair loss is a figment of our imagination. However, I do think - now that we pay very close attention to our hair - we exaggerate certain aspects of the problem, such as how many vellus hairs we have in comparisoin to how many terminal ones.
I do agree with you in another sense: I do see more miniaturized hair. But, most likely, that miniaturized hair was there before we took Accutane.
I think the hair we lost will grow back, though more slightly miniaturized. But I also think we have a few more years before that miniaturized hair becomes vellus hair, at which point we will really have male pattern baldness.
I have decided to begin Propecia. And if the hair I lost to Accutane does grow back, I will look upon these disastrous few months as a blessing, as an event that drew my attention to the problem of hair loss just in time to do something about it.
Let us be optimistic. No talk of hair pieces just yet.

i would love to do the propecia but in a sense propecia is for MPB and basically just reduces the amount of DHT in our system. i did have side effects on it plus my back acne came back so i can't really see myself doing the propecia. but i understand what you're saying the thing is i don't really see how anyone such as the two of us could be affected so badly and not have some sort MPB element attached to it. it just sucks that instead of having to deal with this at 29 or 30 now i have to deal with it full force at 21. my life blows and i'm depressed every day over it.

I am depressed about the hair loss every day, too. Believe me.
If we had lost our hair in a pattern, then there would be more an MPB aspect to the problem. But if the hair loss is diffuse, then MPB is less an aspect of the problem. Don't get me wrong: I do think MPB is involved here, because MPB probably made hair more miniaturized and thus more susceptible to the "shock" of Accutane. But just because the hair is weak and was expelled due to Accutane does not mean that the hair is gone. In other words: it fell out temporarily because it was weak, but it will grow back.
I hope that made sense. About Propecia: I am praying that the side effects are not that bad for me. I hope not.
Hey guys, hows the hairloss going?
I'm still shedding like a mofo but am starting to notice very tiny black hairs comming through at my hairline, very small at the moment tho!!! did you guys seem to find you would get a few itchy patches on ur hair and you could then pull out a hairfrom that area with no effort at all? I assume it much be the new hair pushing it through, well i hope!!

Tbh mate i think it's the other way round, the shedding of these hairs allows DHT to target them and have a greater effect than if the DHT was targeting the stronger hairs which were in the place before....

Hey bro. I think we're both right. Crappy hairs fall out more easily, the development of the new hair is a fresh, weaker target for the DHT.
I started Propecia today, by the way. So far, no problems, though my junk feels somewhat numb. But I wonder if it's in my head...so to speak.
About the itchy scalp: I have had that experience. I itch, I scratch, and two hairs fall out. I don't know if that means the hair is growing back. I hope so.

Are you taking the standard 1mg? i'm wondering if i should take it myself, but i see no recession just yet, just thinning all over i would say about a 15-20% loss in total though :S how much had you lost after about a 3 week period?
my hairloss is still bad although it has slowed down. the strange thing is for some reason today i started shedding horribly i dunno anymore. anyway, i think accutane may have triggered a chronic TE in us and that may be it i dunno. i think though that most people dont go through what we're dealing with and for some reason this is the permanent hair loss everyone always talks about from the stuff. i'm through trying to stay optomistic about it coming back because it's been 4 months since i've been off accutane and at least 6 since it started and it still hasn't stopped let alone have i seen any regrowth. i think we may need to face facts that we're fucked.

But from research, your first TE cycle will of been triggered at the start of accutane, hence the loss x months into your course. It will of still been triggered at the end of your course, so you need to wait until your telogen stage has passed (1-6 months) i agree though if it hasnt stopped in a few months time i think we will probably be fucked....
Also remember if you (your hair follicules) are really sensitive to the accutane then it's still in your system for two months after (or atleast the hypertoxicity)... That means your going to have to wait for your telogen stage length of time after that period (1-6 months) after it has left your body 2 months after finishing....
chronic TE won't make you go bald, but it'll make your hair a lot thinner. i believe my doctor told me this, but i'm not sure.
also, i believe my hair will stop falling out and grow back. if terrible hair loss was so common, i'd have to believe that there would be a lot of backlash against the drug. you never see people say that their shedding lasted more than up to 8 months or so. when it says that there is a chance that the hair loss is permanent, i'm pretty sure they mean the hair rarely doesn't grow back and is permanently lost. both doctors i have gone to for this problem say to just relax, it'll end and get better and that they've never had it really take a toll. hopefully we can all look back a year from now with our full heads of hair.

I agree with David and Lamarr. There would definitely be more backlash against the drug if hair loss was frequently permanent. We all need to relax.
Lamarr: I am taking 1mg.

I disagree i mean the hair loss after all isn't that frequent so a small like 2-5% of it's users suffering from some sort of permanent hair loss i'm sure wouldn't be enough to put a backlash against the drug considering it's high success rate and the fact that it can cause freak babies and that still hasn't really slowed it down. it's like i said i never have heard of anyone really recovering from long term accutane hair loss months after taking the drug is over. right now i'm wearing my hair long like i always have and it looks like shit cause i don't have enough left in the front to really have anything substantial except for these shitty thin bangs that don't really blend with the sides and are very visible in the front. even my dad told me yesterday that my hair looks like shit and i should get it cut. it pissed me off, not because of the hair comment i agree on that, but that he thinks that it's my fault because it needs to be cut and styled etc etc and if i cut it short it would look even worse due to the thinnes an bald spots. my overall point in this rant is that accutane hair loss seems to take on a different aspect than regular TE and long term hair loss after accutane has ended seems to be permanent as i have never heard of one single recovery case really. i am currently trying to look into some sort of weave, extension, or hair piece so i'm hoping that it will make my hair look better.

People who recover probably don't feel the need to report their success stories unless they have become entrenched in a community like this one. I think most of the people here whose hair comes back will post success stories, but other forums aren't as welcoming, or as specific, as this one.
Second, there are stories out there, man. Quite a few of them. For instance: http://www.acne.org/messageboard/index.php...amp;hl=tehsmurf
And let's not forget the patients whose doctors say had hair grow back.
Almost more important, the horror stories you read are from the SAME people posting on DIFFERENT boards. It takes some detective work, but you'll find that I'm right. The same person posts his or her horror story perhaps 3 or 4 times, but doesn't come back to write a success story. And if he or she does come back to write a success story, he or she does it on only one board - i.e., the board that he or she finally settled in. (I hope, by the way, that if and when any of our hair comes back, we will come back to report the success, for future sufferers.)
One more point: The people for whom this problem becomes permanent continue to shed. Most likely, they have chronic telogen effluvium. But our shedding has stopped. So isn't that a good sign?
I know it's more about regrowth and I know about the MPB aspect. That's the only wildcard. But here's the deal: if you believe you had at least two more generations of hair owed you before you took the Accutane, your hair will grow back. You know what I mean? We only lost one generation of hair, and not in any pattern.
Ithappens.... I understand that you are highly pissed off/upset about your hair situation. But since i have been going through this i find you are so so negative about it, whenever i read one of your posts it just puts me on a downer... It's so anti productive, maybe you don't care that it's non-productive, but try and think of other people going through the same thing...
I have been reading for hours and hours on the subject, i think CHRONIC telogen effluvium is just as likely to be triggered by any one of the potential causes (illness, other drug induced forms) as it is accutane....Obviously the dryness does play into it, but if you find that your hair is going back to a reasonable level of sebum production, you have no more reason to worry than a postnatal mother (other than the MPB aspect ofcourse)...
On one forum i was reading they say it can take anywhere from 6-72 months to overcome TE...Ofcourse because accutane seems to trigger TE rather frequently there are going to be stories of it lasting for a long long time (many years). But i have also found similar stories (with no underlying cause e.g. low iron levels/thyroid problems) where the cause was not accutane and lasted just as long as the post's from accutane 'victims'.
Yes it is unfortunate that we are going through this and yes there is a small chance we could fast foward into MPB or it carry on for a long while (Possibly perminently)
But i would place an awful lot of money that 99/100 people overcome this problem within 1-2 years, normally much much sooner...
I would also bet alot of money 'ithappens' on the fact that you will see a drastic improvement over the next year...
The trigger was accutane and you where clearly very sensitive to the drug, you need to wait 8-10 months POST accutane before you can say what you have now is perminent or that your hair won't go back to something similar to what it was....I wish all of you the best of luck!!
mypoorhair, how many hairs did you notice you were losing in the shower when you lost your hair at the highest rate? what about when it started to slow down?
Have you tried using rogaine 5%-The first time I used accutane I thought I had lost some hair also, but felt it came back over time. Good luck
rogaine and propecia shouldn't really work. considering they are there to lower the amount of DHT to fight MPB. TE has nothing to do with DHT.

David,
Did your doctor have anything to say about the MPB aspect of this problem, if any?
