13% of people on Accutane have hair loss. They suffer a condition known as telogen effluvium, in which 30 to 50% of hair is lost supposedly temporarily. However, because this hair loss is diffuse, it is in most cases unnoticeable to everyone except for the person with the condition. Taking Accutane at lower doses might reduce the chance of this and other side effects.

An increase in shedding might mean you are approaching the end of shedding. I shed profusely for three painful weeks, and now I shed maybe 10 hairs a day, including in the shower.

Crap I got a little hair cut and basically she thinned out my hair especially in the front and I didnt really realize it at the time, but now my hair looks even thinner I hate this.

Guys I wanna take a multivitamin once a day but the ones I have contain 5000 mcg of vitamin A, should I avoid it then?

yea my hair loss has slowed down although i would say i still lose anywhere between 20-40 hairs a day it depends, it's probably usually around 30. As far as regrowth I've noticed very very little, some regrowth at the temples, but none really anywhere else. The worst part is the front part of my hair has become so diffuse that when i pick up my hair i look like a chemo patient. i mean i have a bald diffuse spot there and all it sucks. i found that when i use nizoral shampoo the texture of my hair is a lot better, and i think that may be actually getting better so that's good in a sense. i'm not really thinking i'll see that much regrowth based on the amount of hair that i've lost and the fact that i've really seen very little so far over the course of the 4 months or longer this has been going on, but hopefully it does stop. but i would say that the condition of my hair now has become noticeable to other people, i mean it's pretty obvious so i've been waering a hat lately. i dunno if it will recover and i have my doubts we'll see though.

How long have you been off accutane though? seens as that was the trigger you really can't count the time you were on accutane and experiencing hair loss. Don't give up hope yet i have been researching alot and it is common to loose as much as you say you have, you have the same chance at full recovery as the rest of us....

I know it sounds terrible but Im prolly gonna dye my hair again tomorrow.. I dont really know why I shouldnt tho because all the hairs that fall out are already telogen hairs.

Up to you mate, but i'm not even styling mine with wax or anything at the moment... suppose in the long run it won't make much difference though!!!

i wouldn't do it. i think part of my hair loss has been due to the way my scalp/hair has been dried out from accutane. the other day in the shower i barely putted a hair (could fill it in my scalp) and it came out without much effort. i would not advise dying your hair.

just wait a couple months till your hair is healthy again.

Even though I'm still losing hair because of accutane, do you think its okay for me to start taking multi vitamin pills with the recommended daily intake of Vitamin A included

Dolph,

I've been wondering the same thing. My doctor said Accutane is out of the system in two months. Nevertheless, I think I am going to play it safe and not take my "Hair & Nails" supplements until 5 months have past since my last pill. For me, that's next month.

Kinda bored today so i did a little more research on TE.

http://www.emedicine.com/derm/topic416.htm

"Telogen effluvium is a reactive process caused by a metabolic or hormonal stress or by medications. Generally, recovery is spontaneous and occurs within 6 months."

-I can imagine how stressful it is for you guys whose hairloss has continued for 3 or 4 months so maybe this will ease your mind a bit.

"The interval between the inciting event in telogen effluvium and the onset of shedding corresponds to the length of the telogen phase, between 1 and 6 months (average 3 mo). "

- This would explain why some people notice hairloss only a couple months into treatment and some do not notice it till after their course.

"Medications, of which the most frequency cited are beta-blockers, anticoagulants, retinoids (including excess vitamin A), propylthiouracil (induces hypothyroidism), carbamazepine, and immunizations"

- Accutane is a retinoid and side effects mimmick that of a vitamin A overdose.

Yes, miraculously, my shedding has stopped. I lose at most 10 hairs a day. Usually only 2 or 3 in the shower. And this is not because I don't have any more hair to lose, etc. I still have OK coverage.

I shed violently for about a month. As others have said, this violent shedding usually signals the end of the shedding phase. When the growing phase begins, God only knows. I hope in the next two months.

that's good to hear. i'm about 3 months post tane so i figure this should be the peak of my shedding. i believe i've been shedding this ridiculous amount of hair for about 2 weeks or so. my hair looks like it always has, with maybe a little less coverage up front. we will see how it goes.

I presume those of us who have long telogen phases (as my hairloss did not start until 5 weeks after accutane) will not see regrowth for a longer amount of time? or recovery should i say. Am i right in thinking that?

Lamarr, how long have you been losing hair?

Here's my theory:

Time from the trigger to time of first shed = time from the first shed to time of last shed = time from last shed to time of regrowth = the telogen phase. You go through two telogen phases because after you go through the first one, the Accutane is still in your body. You don't suffer a third because the (toxic amount of) Accutane is out of your body in two to three months.

Let me know if this needs more explanation. I think this makes sense.

Only been loosing for about 16 days...

I understand what you have just said....

With me the trigger is either when i was very stressed/ill with a chest infection (3 months before the start of hair loss)

Or when my dose was upped to 90mg a day and my vision went blurey (increase in brain pressure) which is what caused me to discontinue the drug obviously, that was 5 weeks before hairloss.

Now i was also on antibiotics when the hairloss began (7 days in to a 10 day course).

There is so many potential causes for my hairloss i don't think i have a chance at identifying which one was the cause!!!
