im about two weeks away from starting my accutane treatment. but this thread is soooooo freaking me out. it's the most replied thread in the accutane section!!
i almost wanna pull out of going on accutane and maybe just stick with the retins and wait til i grow out of it, if ever lol. but if it comes down to it, i'll take baldness over acne any day. im just afraid i'd lose my hair AND the acne doesnt go into remission. that would just be really cruel.
Don't let this thread put you off to much, chances are you will be fine... just ask to go on a low dose course, don't listen to people who say "oh but a low dose course won't cure you forever" because a long course with a much lower dose is far safer and only slighlty less effective. I promise you that is your best route... Also if you have very oily skin i feel you would probably be ok anyway....

i cant recall where i read it, but i think the chances of hair loss due to accutane was like 13%? but anyways, thanks for the encouraging words man. Were you on a high dosage course? And what did you mean by "if you have very oily skin i feel you would probably be ok anyway"? More oily might decrease your chance for hair loss?
I was on 1mg per kg, but i am pretty big built i have worked out since the age of 17 and i weigh about 95kg so i was on 100mg one day 90mg the next at the peak of my course...
Yeah the chances of hair thinning are around 13% but the chances of it being permanent is much less.
The oily skin theory seems to apply in many permanent hairloss cases, most of the people with parmanent hairloss DIDN'T start out with oily skin. I feel the isotretinoin was acting on other parts of the body in these people due to the sebacious glands not needing such a great reduction in activity...

yeah that makes sense, that's what i originally had in mind too.
thanks for the help. hope everything works out for ya
i dont want to scare you but i was in your exact same position a few months dingdong, and i decided to gamble my hair for clear skin and without any luck its been the greatest mistake ive made in my life so far. i never heard about this oil skin theory but i guess it doesn't apply to me because before going on acctuane my face was really oily. i was also on low dosage and for only 2 months period from going to 20mg - 30mg,and im still shedding hair after about 5 months off. the only thing positive from this whole ordeal is im finally clear (had acne for at least 8 yrs) and only get 1 or 2 little white heads and no more cystic which scarred me regardless of treatment.
dingdong, i'd say try the oral antibiotics or other methods, accutane should be your last resort if ever. It does work, but its bad that i causes hair loss, im on my 7ish month and still shedding, i hate it so much, my doctor told me to cut it short and use baby shampoo on it..im biotin 1G a day, soon i will go on minox if i dont see it getting better, if worst comes to worst imma have to shell out several thousand for a hair transplant, anyone know how much they go for no a days?

well at least you're clear, so it's still "the greatest mistake you've made"? How bad was your acne prior to treatment? My acne is bad enough that i'd do the trade off for hair.

antibiotics have stopped working now for me. you're 7 months post 'tane? is there MPB in your family?
Flushing, mouth ulcers, the hairloss ofcourse, and the final one which no one believes but it is all related via vasculitus is scarring, i wake up to indented scars on my face...i don't expect you to believe that but yes my skin scars itself. People say oh it must be where acne was, but no they are linear lines that form by themselves often in places which have never had acne...
all these things can be linked by what i feel is the underlying cause e.g. vasculitus. I am seeing a physician again on tuesday...

my acne was in between moderate and severe, and most of cysts would scar my face. accutane cleared my skin and also helped my scars too. u should try other oral acne meds because i never tried them and it could of helped me.
dingdingding-
In your situation I would take accutane. Even though hair loss has been a problem for me, if you would rather be bald than have acne then take it. The chances you will suffer permanent hair loss is very unlikely, and the chances that your skin will be permanantly improved is very likely.
gentlemen, hows it goin? i see we have a new generation of accutane hair loss sufferers on board. real quick run down of my situation. hair was full and thick before accutane...slight hairline recession, nothing to write home about. four months into tane, hair became wavy/curly...very dry, very hard to manage. shortly after that i began shedding. lets see, im over six months post tane, still shedding. hairs not as wavy, but its still there, still pretty difficult to manage. hair line is shot, and has receeded a bit more. temples took a pretty big hit...seems like the hair that used to cover my temples wont grow past a certain point or grows very slowly. its also wirey, well my entire hairline is just kinda wirey. i have diffuse shedding all over. i can see regrowth but its just not keeping up with my shedding. i shed more hair in the shower than id like to. when i do my hair with gel, hair pulls out very easily. what else, im losing short hairs, long hairs, thin hairs, thick hairs. my hair just feels different, lifeless almost. its really been a frustrating year for me. ive been taking biotin and msm for the last three months, no multi vitamins cause im afraid the vitamin a will have an adverse affect. ive been bouncing back and forth between shampoos....im currently using nioxin twice a week and a conditioner with no harmful ingredients. nothings working for me...so heres my plan. im going to see a specialist this thursday. my plan is to go on propecia. ive been avoiding this as much as possible cause im tired of putting drugs into my system. but it kinda seems like if i dont do something about this now, its only gonna get worse. so im gonna post pictures soon, before and after tane...and ill keep you updated monthly on the propecia. oh, and ill let you in on what the doctor has to say about all this. k, cya
thank alot gd, will be checking for your update. Is there anyone other people here post tane over 1 year and hasnt gotten their hair back.
Hey guys, i just found some interesting new experiment. If accutane does lead us to MPB(chances favor not) but never know for sure, we can try this.

Thing is about hair transplants is that for me personally my hair is being rejected throughout my whole body, the hair on my arms, pubic area, eyebrows, eyelashes all sheds more than it used to. It is only noticeable on my head, arms and pubic area though, as my eyebrows and eyelashes were sooo thick.
Anyway my point being if we have more hair grown it is still just going to be shed because our skin no longer provides the correct growing conditions for the hair follicle (in my case anyway)
Not tried minox yet, i will do soon though... and i know it's not exactly the same as a hair transplant but what they do is culture your own hair follicles and replicate+reinject them. My problem isn't balding areas, it is constant shedding and ultra thin hair all over my scalp...
ultra thin hair, damn.. well for me i see it as good, that means it is a sign of accutane cause the accutane reduced the size of the sebum gland so less sebum so hair grows thinner and typically drug induced hairloss is reversable with time, umm when are you planning to go on minox? i might start this saturday and keep you posted on how its working..
New load of tests i've just had doen today... ANCA .anticardiolipin antibodies. antihistone and anticardiolipin antibodies, cryoglobulins, complement factors C3 and C4, C-reactive protein and a1-antitrypsin.
The Dr is particularly concerned with the scars forming on my face which i showed him today, also showed him the pin point like broken cappilaries....
Will let you know the results when i get them. I'm telling you guys now in persisted hair shedding there will be an underlying cause, and i don't feel sebum is a factor in most cases....
