my sheddign has basicaly stopped but my hairline seems fucked? what are your all updates andy, lamaar, and dolph??

I think I've recovered. My shedding has basically stopped and today all of a sudden I saw a lot of regrowth when I parted my hair, it just depends where. If I'm really done this nightmare I'm so happy. My temples have filled in also :)

Good to hear that. Did you take any meds or vitamins that you thought that might of helped?

Lamarr,

What's your thoughts on taking silica?

Jade

I have heard of it's use for healthy nails/skin/hair etc. But i don't know how much benefit it would have in our case. I would say MSM would be more beneficial, although i'm not sure on the action silica has on the hair...

Jade,

When did you stop takin Accutane?

I stop taking accutane last April. My hairloss didn't start till June of '06.

As of now I'm still shedding but not as much as before. I too can see finer short new hair falling out. I hope this is TE cycle.

I've used Rogaine foam for the last 3 months and I think it help decrease the hair shedding. Also using Nizoral.

I'm planning to start using Baby shampoo, I heard its less harsh on the hair.

Also want to start taking that Biotin supplement. Anyone one took that with good results?

I think biotin can help thicken the hair shaft for sure... currently only take brewers yeast which only contains a small amount of it... You could alternate bween the nizoral and baby shampoo if you wanted, but i currently alternate between head and shoulders and nizoral as i have read this is a good combo for stimilating growth and maintaining a healthy scalp!!

just another update here, I'm still losing around 30-50 hairs a day at least usually with around 20-30 being in the shower alone. I stress this just because you guys have massive shedding there is no need to worry if the structure of your hair doesn't change. sure it may get slightly thinner, but if there are no real noticeable changes over tthe course of the few months this has been going on i can almost assure you have nothing to worry about and will recover. As for me I have watched my hair month by month thin and thin and diffuse away. I can now say for certain i've lost 70% of the hair i once had no doubt in my mind. I"ve gone from a guy with a thick full set of hair, more than most, to balding in a matter of a year, really scary stuff. My back bald patch has finally come out full force and i use toppik to cover it up daily and the front bang portion of my hair has compeltely diffused away. I look like i have the hair of a 50 yearold. this diffuses patch through the front of my hair is killing me, as it has become easy to see through in bright sunlight now. I dunno anymore I keep putting the propecia off, but I gotta stop this shedding one way or another. Oh and fyi i can't be sure but i wouldn't be surprised if the loss, well mine anyway is in fact permanent, at least in the front. I can say that i think there may be some regrowth in the back not sure, but i can without a doubt say that my front diffuse portion has had zero regrowth. and i have severe inflamation in the front part of my scalp as well. if it gets worse i may just opt for a hairpiece.

Phan 95,

I stopped taking accutane at the beginning of November last year. It's now 10 months and still shedding heavily. My hair is between 40-50% volume of what it used to be. It is now very short as I don't have a choice.

Are you male or female? So you've basically been shedding for 15 months? Do you think the rogaine has slowed the shedding? How many hairs on average would you say you lose on a daily basis?

I've been taking biotin the entire time. I think it does help speed up hair growth but does not help with the shedding.

How long were you on accutane for?

best,

jade

Rudolph,

Just wanted to say it's wonderful to hear you are recovering. We all hope for that on here! How long did it take for the shedding to stop?

tks,

jade

Buddy are you sure you have had no regrowth at the front of your scalp? i find that really hard to fathom!! surely you would be totaly bald in that section by now if that was the case?

Im also certain i will end up like julius, i don't think im having any degree of MPB at the moment, but it is only a matter of time with this rate of shedding. i have about 4 real nastly sores on my head at the moment, like 3 mm across kind of flat red and inflammed, painfull to the touch, i really dunno what the hell is wrong with my body...

Jade,

I'm 23/m. My shedding didn't start till after I stop taking the accutane.

I was on accutane for 3 months I was suspose to take another month but my doctor looked at my blood test and said I should stop taking it. I think my liver couldn't handle the accutane.

For the first 2 months of Rogaine it didn't really help at all. I only noticed less shedding around month 3. I'm now on month 4 and I'm shedding around 10-15 hairs in the shower. Before I was shedding around 20-25.

Strange thing is when I look at my hair its still diffused crown area and I didn't notice any changes at all.

Well I have had some regrowth don't get me wrong because I can tell by the newer shorter hairs i seem to be shedding too. But from what I've been experiencing in my case anyway, is that most of this regrowth seems to probably be in the back and sides of my hair as the diffuse patch in the front keeps getting larger and larger. if you look at the profile pic I have it's sort of like that except worse now. the front middle section of my hair has diffused away, and I check every day and there is zero regrowth. My bang area has been completely destroyed etc. also, lamarr has your hair completely changed texture? I went from having poker straight hair, much like an asian almost, to having wirery out of control curly hair after accutane. It sort of started slowly and then spread across my entire scalp.

No mate my texture is the same, my hairloss is becoming ridiculus, i have lost about 3-400 hairs today... i think my capilaries have been damaged as i am having many broken capilaries appear all over my body including under my eyes :( don't see how i will ever get over all of this shit... if it was just the hairloss i would be OK...

how is everyone's acne by the way? Mine has come back a little, not as bad as before - but constant breakouts still....

jade

ps...Lamarr, don't worry too much, I also went through really heavy shed around month 4-5 then it seemed to slow down a bit for the next few months...i think it's going in cycles for some reason?

To tell you guys the truth I wouldn't care if my acne came back. I just want my hair to be back the way it was before accutane. :snooty:

I have accepted my hair will never be as it once was, but same as you guys i would happily go back to having the acne i had before tane...to be like i used to be!! my acne has returned a bit also....

Jade did your hairloss start during your course or a month or two after?

My theory for myself is that due to my shedding starting 5 weeks after finishing tane i have a long telogen length... e.g. about 5-6 months that is why the shedding didnt start till after tane. If this is the case though the shedding can easily go on for 10-12 months as i will of suffered two bowts of TE... If infact it is TE i am still suffering...

jesus i couldn't agree more. My acne was pretty much under control on my face anyway the only place it was really severe was on my upper back. I would gladly trade everything back to have all my hair and overall look like i did before accutane. I mean the hair is a huge part of it, but I'm telling over the course of the past year since I started taking accutane till the time i finished in feburary I swear It looks like I have aged 5-10 years. I'll post pictures to show what I'm talking about. my youth has been taken away from me at 21, it's all downhill from here.

I feel the same way man, i had acne from the age of 16 aswell, it was pretty mild on my face before tane but same as you i had it on my back aswell...but i mean who cares THAT much about acne on your back that no one can see. We gotta not think about all of this anyway because there is no way we can go back and change things!! But yeah first it was acne stealing my youth now its hairloss, scaring and broken cappilaries, what a joke tane was for me!!

I have noticed like some members have mentioned that I am shedding short hairs with the spear tip, which indicates that it is a new anagen hair already put in the telogen state. Is this concerning? Could this mean my anagen cycle is forever messed up?? What exactly does this indicate for the future?

I don't think it means we are forever doomed, but it could mean that this is gonna take longer to play out than your average bowt of TE....

Hi Lamarr,

I actually lost hair throughout my treatment - much more than normal but since it didn't change the overall look of my hair (I still kept it long) and my derm kept reassuring me that it would stop as soon as I stopped the accutane, I didn't worry to much. On the higher dosage I started shedding handfuls and that's when I stopped taking the med. From that point on (last Nov) my hair has been shedding like crazy. It fell out so quickly that within 2 months I had to cut my hair short (which I kept short until now).

So, I really don't know how long this is going to last, but it's really depressing and I also feel like I've aged 5 years :(

I think (as anyone who has seen my silly diagrams knows) that you have to consider how many triggers you suffered. So that shedding short hair doesn't necessarily indicate a short anagen cycle, but just overlapping telogen triggers. I hope that makes sense.

I see tiny hairs all over my scalp. I just don't know if it's going to make a difference at this point. And I started shedding again, as you might also know. I shed about 30 hairs a day. Not bad, I know. But I had stopped shedding.

Let me ask you guys this: do you think that my new shedding could be caused by new hairs coming in?

On the plus side, my sides from Propecia are gone (Watch. Now that I've said that, I'm going to wake up a woman tomorrow.) So we'll see. Hang in there, everyone. Just hang in there.

Andy-

do you think the shedding of short hairs could do with the particular follicle they are coming out of being more succeptible to TE. I ask this because if a new short hair falls out, that means it recently went into the telogen phase twice.
