I feel you pain. That's what running through my mind on a daily basis and on top of that I have to deal with other side effects.

It kills your inner drive and renders your helpless and hopeless.

I've come to the conclusion Accutane triggered hair loss is the worst kind of hair loss there is. You don't even lose hair in a normal pattern so if/when you do go bald you'll not only be bald on top but bald on the sides as well. How rare is that?!

This confuses me, if cancer patients regrow their hair what did Accutane do to my body to bring it out of balance? Is Accutane worse than chemo? I'm oblivious to cancer but ti seriously seems like Accutane is worse.

I'm not physically disabled but I'm mentally disabled thanks to this drug. There's basically no stopping it.

Hey man,

I hate seeing people facing such difficulty due to accutane. You need to add me on msn and we can have a chat about improving your quality of life. There are many things you can do to deal with the side effects from accutane.

Get msn and add my email address (it is on my profile)

Cheers,

Mark

I've finally given up on my hair, I am destined to be bald and physically deformed and this is beyond fixing.

Thanks for all the help everyone, I just hope I can deal with the other side effects but it consumes my very being.

hello guys...it seems that my shedding of eyebrows/eyelashes has stopped again....now i'm really confused...i'm not sick...at all...well maybe my throat is a bit red but nothing is inflammed...i don't feel sick at all....so i think it is not alopecia that i have...although i must ask something....i have some nasty dandruff these days....(i always had dandruff - I can't remember the time i didn't had it...) and i'm checking my scalp every day, i don't have any inflammatory signs (no foliculitis, no redness) my scalp only have that crazy dandruff and is itchy - i think it is itchy becouse of dandruf...itchyness is also something I always had...my main concern is that i can't see any regrowth - not even on my armpits...my hair is very slowly groving...and i think that hair on my armpits is somehow thinner...not thick as it always was...what could it be??

has anyone experienced hair thinning?mine has been a lot thicker- i'm not talking about nuber of hair, but it's quality...although...i think that the number of hair has also receded... :(

alos, I wanted to ask if you guys have problem with skin healing also?

i agree with you but some can at least tell me if theyhave similar symptoms...all of you are saying that you have inflammed scalp...but i don't know if dandruff means inflammation...i always had dandruff(prior accutane - sometims it was good sometimes it was awful...but i always had it)...but only now i'm concernd becouse my hair is falling off...i don't have dry skin(on contrary my skin is so damn oily)...or rashes, or foliculitis, or flushing...so i can't relate to anyone...i just wan't to know if there is anyone...with those "mild" symptoms... all i have is slow healing skin..a bit thinner then usual also, and hair falling (include eyebrows/eyelashes and armpits) and dandruff of course..

and yes...also someone could answer me if anyone got better or cured totally? so i can hope for this sh*t to stop...

i think that those are things that someone could inform me about...

Ivmi- Have you been to the doc yet???? Have you had lab done yet??? What have you tried.

We really can only give advice on what we did to try and maintain or help our situation and in some it is by no means a cure but to maintain any futher damage. Everyone is diffrent but may have the same symptoms as I Accutally had overgrowth of hair while on accutane and 2 months off of Accutane my hair started falling out body wide.

1. Are you currently on any other meds??

2. Have you stoped w/ anything fat soluble Vit A and what have you done????

3. Did you re have your thyroid checked (wether weight loss/gain or not, everyone is differnt and I think I remember you saying it ran in your family

4. Did you have iron/ ferritin / b12 levels or any other female hormones checked.

It may just be that labs come back normal and Accutane caused hair loss.

As a women I myself had hairloss such as in the eyebrows, legs hair, dry itchy scalp, burned at first and For me I ended up w/a autoimmnue thyroid disorder, I was deficent in many vitamins assoicated w/ Accutane.

1. I got my thyroid under control, things still were Not good w/ hair after 4 months

2. Got Iron, b12, Vit D, Biotin, L-car, Vit A retinol, cortisol (which was high) and few other labs done. Was defcient or borderline in all but Vit A of course oh and cortisol.

3. Started 300mg of Iron ( I take a rx form however, I have heard many say slow fe is good overcounter) I take it with 500mg of B12 and folate supplement and drink it w/ oj /water.

4. I took biotin for a while gnc be beatiful brand

5. I used selson blue and now use it only 1 a week/ I tried many shampoos even expensive ones. I found that pantene shampoo/2&1 full and thick along w/ adding some extra conditioner from Sally's beauty called Ion has helped give some fullness and not look so fine.

6. I don't wash my hair everyday, I don't use products on my hair, or blowdry it everyday.

7. I must add also that I have other problems related to accutane so, I do take a anti malaria drug which may or may not of helped my hair.

Where I am I 2 yrs later w/ my hair

Well it is not as thick as it orginally was before accutane, but I have had growth, it is thicker, my hair doesn't grow as fast anywhere on body. (which I guess for being a women not bad when coming to shave the legs lol) My eyebrows and eyelashes are back (only a few eyelahes didn't)

My hair stylist has noticed my hair is thicker and not as thin. Keep in mind I use and do theese things everyday.

Like John said we are not ignoring you, we can only give you what we have done and do. Everyone is diffrent what works for one may not work for you, whats wrong with one may not be wrong with you.

Well, it could just be that Accutane caused hairloss. I know it sucks esspecially since you only took it for 9days.

If there is anything elese you have questions feel free I will try and help the best I can. Try not to stress as it will make it worse.

My story:

I've always had thick-growing hair, with thick individual hairs. Accutane didn't change that except for the area just in front of my ears. However, while on Accutane, I noticed my hairline receded. I was only 19 years old.

My question:

I finished Accutane a year ago. I haven't noticed my hairline recede any further. (Though genetically my brother has had his recede a lot and he's only 3 years older.)

Is it likely that my hairline stopped receding after finishing Accutane?

I take vitamins and eat well; it's been one month shy of a year since I finished and I haven't noticed my hair grow back, but it seems to have stopped receding if that makes sense.

Anyone? I laid it out pretty clearly... is it possible that it gave me a receding hairline temporarily, and stopped after finishing Accutane? (Without growing back I must add).

I had LOTS of itchiness and a bit of dandruff at the time.

hey oli girl! i checked my hormones ft4, ft3, tsh, dheas,lh,fsh, prolactin, testo, free testo. Prolactin is a bit higher (well i supposed it would be higher since it is a hormon of stress) and testosteron is a bit higher also...but nothing significant. I don't understand what the deal is with this drug, people say hair loss is supposed to be temporary with accutane becuase it's a former chemo drug (most chemo patients regrow hair), it causes hypervitamonsis A (excess vitamin a causes temporary hair loss), it induces telogen effluvium, which is a temporary hair loss condition. Yet in spite of all this, there are some that say the hair loss is permanent? So is this the only drug in the world that causes permanent hair loss?

BTW I've noticed recently that Wiki has updated its accutane page to include hair loss as a permanent side effect, whereas before they only said it was temporary.

The hairloss thing is pretty simple if you consider what the original poster said.

Look at it like this:

Some people will develop baldness, some won't.

The ones that will, get it after a certain number of 'hair cycles'. So a hair stays in your head then falls out, thats one cycle. For people who go bald it's just that after a certain number of cycles it never grows back.

Now, let's say guy A is going to go bald after 10 cycles. Without accutane or anything, these ten cycles will take 40 years, so thats 4 years per cycle.

Let's say guy A goes on accutane when he's in the middle of his 30th cycle, so 2 years into it in our example here. He's got another two years of natural hair retention in this cycle left, but accutane makes the hair fall out early and he skips ahead to his next cycle, which is one cycle closer to the point he was always going to go bald.

So if you take accutane and it makes your hair fall out, it accelerates the rate at which you will go bald. For some people it doesn't take them to a high enough number of cycles, and their hair grows back. For others it takes them over the amount where they were always going to go bald, and in those cases the hair doesn't grow back.

This is my non-medical understanding, with wild figures and time lengths, but I hope it helps you understand the mechanism.

i don't agree with Chf at all! my whole family is very hairy! and they all have much hair! just like I had before that fu**ing drug! i don't know what is happening. It seems like my hair on my body is getting finer...and I already have bald spots underarms..my hair is much thinner...about 40 %...and my hair is very slowly groving...how weird is this?? please tell me smarty ,when normal people do experience hair loss, who loose their hair all over their body and has decreased growth??

My post is based on what the dermatologist in the original post said regarding baldness, I haven't read your posts in this thread so I wasn't really addressing them, and as such I really don't know about your situation and whether accutane caused it or not. I didn't claim to.

1. Roche themselves states it can cause Alopecia, though it has been known to cause MPB, TE etc...

2. Well some cancer pts who take chemo don't get thier hair completly back. In fact my neighbor still wears a wig and has very very fuzzy, short fine hair and its been over a yr since her chemo treatment.

don't worry about multivitamin it has vit a but very low dose... and i started to take that only few days ago so the hair loss can't be becouse of that...i started to take yasmin pills fot that testosteron levels...it should level it down...

anywas...i'm keeping my eye on any changes in my body...so if that multivitamin start to mess up vith my body i will quit that...i wanted to ask something...if i'm taking that multivitamin pills, can i go and take my vitamins and mineral levels in blood? does it change results?

you know what concerns me the most? i'm feeling while reading this posts about accutane induced hair loss, that those who experience scalp hair loss along with body hair loss that it is a bad sign, and that you will probably not recover...it feels like that when you read all this pages...and normaly that i'm at alarming rate becouse i'm scared... i wish that it is only scalp hair...there are few members here who are constantly writting that body hair loss means something serious is going on...like difusse aa...and it's really scary to read this posts...becouse diffuse aa means that you will never recover...i feel that most chances for recovery you have if it is TE...or at least that is how some guys here are writting.
