I've bumped the Accutane Debate Thread. If anyone wants to debate Accutane itself, take the argument over there and keep within the Board Rules, please. THIS thread is for discussing hair loss induced by Accutane and what others are doing to find relief.

I dontwant to debate anything .. as a future Accutane user I am genuinly interested in the"hair loss induced by Accutane. And cause I wasnt able to find any solid proof for such a thing .. I am asking nicely and politely any1 willing to share some pics with before and after comparison to do so.
Yeah I find it weird, it seems like the hugest problem yet no one keeps any photo log updates on their hair/scalp, yet they try all these different kids of drugs for hair growth and no test photos to see before and after. I doubt any are balding, yet I see people that never taken accutane and are bald at the top of their hair at age 22-25+
And it's normal to shed 100-150 hairs a day, just you wash your hair less and are dryer on accutane so people keep checking their hair always and when they do brush it all the ones from not washing for a couple days come out too

Darkpeep and jacobden- I don't post any photos because to anyone that looks at a photo of me it appears that I have a normal head of hair. But you can't see in the picture how many hairs I shed a day, and trust me it is much more than is normal, and much more than I shed before my accutane course. You cannot see that many of the hairs I shed are thinner, people with a normal healthy head of hair have almost all hairs of equal diameter. Someone can be a year or two years, or nearly four years removed from accutane like me, and appear to have a normal head of hair, but sometimes it is a very gradual process. Think about twenty years into the future, many people who were never destined to go bald, with no balding on either side of the family will be bald because of the hair loss accutane has induced. It may not be obvious in a photo a year or two after, but down the road it is definitely noticeable. If you don't buy it, and think we're here to spook you, then don't bother coming on this thread, ignore us all and take your chances. I didn't believe all the hype, and thats what I did. Now I am here. This thread is to help people who have this issue, and trust me it is not in our heads.
I'm not going to respond to anyone directly. But those of you who have read ALL my previous posts properly will know i do alot to keep my skin and hair in check post accutane.
Accutane did NOTHING but make my skin worse, i use other things to keep my skin clear now.
My hair was very good in that picture, i would love it if my hair stayed that good (even though i use 3 seperate teatments for my hair alone).
My hair is worse off than it was in those pictures, despite using those three treatments to help reduce the rate of gradual decline.
Yeah I find it weird
You will not find it weird anymore if you are going through what we are. But I can forgive you though since I do understand exactly how you feel about people complaining about accutane side effects when you are about to go on the drug or already on the drug. Good luck, mate.
Thanks, I was on it, years ago. yet I see people talking about bad hair loss and trying all sorts of things and all it seems is they have a bit of shedding not even enough to show a before and after pic, because it will look the same, and they don't bother posting pics because they are more scared of going bald than actually going bald, they notice a bit more shedding and thats it. When I see someone that had 80% hair missing from accutane i'll feel bad, but it's still rare
probably all that stressing out over hair and searching sites a couple times a day doesnt help either.
The Dandruff is seriously getting out of hand. I look's horrible. Junks of scalp everywhere!!!! Does anyone else have this problem?
My hair loss has been consistent but kicked up a notch last night, I lost a crap load in the shower!
I stopped the steroid solution and oil treatment a month ago. I'm currently doing NOTHING for it, just trying not to think about it.
I put my hair up as much as possible and do everything in my power to NOT run my hands through it during the day.
I'm not sure how long I have been shedding I think it's been 3 months. I never went back to my derm , I can't really afford it right now.
I still have that Narzol shampoo that I never tried, I think I'm going too. Any other suggestions for this terrible dandruff?
Is there any way, besides a scalp biopsy, to distinguish between diffuse alopecia areata and telogen effluvium? Like hair characteristics, location of hair loss, etc? I had a biopsy done and it showed MPB, but I have my doubts about that result. I am losing hair from all over my scalp, not just the crown areas. I want to believe I have either diffuse AA or TE but I can not tell which one....
edit: if i can figure out how to edit my face out, ill post some pics of me from when the shedding first started (november/december 2009) and how it is today...
Hey texas boy- I got the same thing u did, 10 days after my hair starting falling out. But my hair fell out everywhere eyebrows, eyelashes, chest everywhere. Has that happened to u? Its been 6months and still happening.
Leesett- I had gotten crazy dandruff too, chucks of scalp peeling off. The Nizoral did help. But did give me a bit of a headache, and kind of made my scalp feel sore. i'm using aloe vera gel after nizoral, but waiting a couple of hrs before putting it on my scalp

The excessive body hair loss is a big indicator for AA.

alopecia area or androgenetic alopecia? TE can also bring on body hair loss
Well im about 4-5 months post accutane and the hair loss is really hitting me. Hair is extremely thin and very sparse. Makes me sad. So much for my derm saying "it will go away". At this rate it doesn't look like it will go away.
I'm going to go pickup some zinc/biotin tomorrow. What are some dosage recommendations. I know for biotin the OP's derm suggested 2.5mg, but what about zinc?
My story:
I've always had thick-growing hair, with thick individual hairs. Accutane didn't change that except for the area just in front of my ears. However, while on Accutane, I noticed my hairline receded. I was only 19 years old.
My question:
I finished Accutane a year ago. I haven't noticed my hairline recede any further. (Though genetically my brother has had his recede a lot and he's only 3 years older.)
Is it likely that my hairline stopped receding after finishing Accutane?
I take vitamins and eat well; it's been one month shy of a year since I finished and I haven't noticed my hair grow back, but it seems to have stopped receding if that makes sense.
Well I just got back from a dermatologist visit. I could tell right away that the derm didn't have any clue about accutane hair loss because when I expressed my problem he scanned through a book, and then claimed, "ah yes, this does happen". I was definitely many times more knowledgeable about the subject than he was. He inspected my hair and scalp briefly and concluded that it didn't look like mpb and the shedding I was experiencing was probably due to accutane (duh). At least he didn't completely deny the correlation like I've heard of some derms doing. He would not accept the idea at all that it could be diffuse AA, stating that if that was the case I would be near bald right now, (I've been shedding for about 3.5 years). His recommendation to me was to start rogain because it has been proven to be helpful for a vast array of hair losses. I don't think this is bad advice given his extremely limited knowledge of the subject, and victims of accutane hair loss have stated that rogain has helped. I would say overall the appointment was a complete waste of time but I did get a referral to get some blood work done. I'm going to get my hormone levels checked as well as my iron levels. I've heard of people with imbalances in these areas after accutane, so I figure I should probably get them checked out. Getting the blood test referral was all I could have really hoped for out of the appointment given the fact that almost all derms don't know sh*t about accutane hair loss. If the blood work comes back normal I probably won't seek any further medical advice given how hard it is to find a knowledgeable practitioner in this area.

That does sound reasonable. Maybe there ain't a specific "name" for our hair loss at all. Let's just call it accutane hair loss for now.
I feel like crying, my hair is a wreck. I can't stand this anymore I'm on the brink of insanity I tell you. I look at my brothers and see the hair I use to have, I'm a shell of my former self and I hate it.
I hate looking in the mirror and I feel so emo because of the man I see in the mirror. I'm ugly and I'm an episode away from a mental break down.
Thank you Accutane! I give it 2 months before I'm bald.

hang in there...
hello guys! I'm not sure if i should be concerned yet....
Well i will write whats on my mind and you can comment on it...
I've took accutane for 9 days, and stopped (month before i started accutane I had an bike accident and i've earned small scar on my chin - which was healing great - like all of my previous scars) but I've noticed when i started takin accutane that it has become bigger and biger and it has become keloid type of scar! So i stopped immediatley (although my derm told me that it is not accutane induced-yeah right)
So now I'm 3 months post accutane and this is what I noticed since I stopped -1 month after, when I got my period i got very sick ( I almost never get sick), 2nd month - few days prior my period i have experienced eyebrow and eyelashes fall of - but i feel like it is itchy and when I scratch it fall of...I can't say if my hair is falling of, becouse i have a lot of hair and I have always shed pretty much...also, i got sick again( while having period) then loss of eyelashes/eyebrows stopped...now 3rd month - i got my period - I didnt got sick, but my eyelashes and aybrows are falling again - and it started few days before period again...I dont know if it is coincidence or what...but it is weird... I also noticed that my skin is very fragile, veins are prominent and i have red marks for 3 months now - and I never got them that long...what do you think??
should I be worry about eyelashes/eyebrows...(and fragile skin)
P.S. Oh yes i forgot...since i shave my armpit hair i didnt notice this till now...i noticed that there is a bald spot...i didn't noticed hair loss anywhere else on my body yet...maybe it is becouse I shave all my hair...i should stop for a month...and check it out...i cant say that it is obvious anywhere else than my armpits...i really don't know what to think about my scalp hair...i don't know if it is thinner...and as i said I've always shed great amount of hair...and i had dandruff also before...so i dno't know what to think...i must say that my skin is oily - and it didn't even had chance to be dry since I only took accutane for 9 days...
one more thing that I'm doubting is that maybe last time shedding stopped becouse i was ill...
i'm really scared becouse most of you didn't heal from this state...and I'm really sad becouse i thought that i stopped accutane early enough...it didn't even cleared my acne at all...nothing...it seems that it just manage to do damage to my body...nothing else
please guys give me advice...a dont want to lose hair on my body and eyebrows/lashes
I feel you pain. That's what running through my mind on a daily basis and on top of that I have to deal with other side effects.
It kills your inner drive and renders your helpless and hopeless.
I've come to the conclusion Accutane triggered hair loss is the worst kind of hair loss there is. You don't even lose hair in a normal pattern so if/when you do go bald you'll not only be bald on top but bald on the sides as well. How rare is that?!
This confuses me, if cancer patients regrow their hair what did Accutane do to my body to bring it out of balance? Is Accutane worse than chemo? I'm oblivious to cancer but ti seriously seems like Accutane is worse.
I'm not physically disabled but I'm mentally disabled thanks to this drug. There's basically no stopping it.
