I am a mother of a 14 year old girl who suffers from moderate acne. She has been on everything possible without any results. She is now on Solodyn, Benzaclin in the morning and at night Yaz birth control and Retin A. It has only been 5 days and her acne is spreading. It's the worse it's ever been. I know you need to give it time to work but she has never been off any medication. Why is it every time you start something new its like starting all over again. How long should we continue this routine. My next move is Accutane. Any suggestions?

I'm currently on Solodyn for about 4 months and I still breakout almost everyday. I can say that Solodyn has cleared the acne I had and it controls the acne, but not very well.
To see the results while using Solodyn it can take up to 3 months for results. The first couple of weeks on Solodyn it will be horrible, lots of breakouts and redness.
I'm gonna stay couple of more months with Solodyn and see how it will progress further and then I'm thinking about going on Accutane as well.
Each time you start a new medication the body is getting used to the medication and it causes breakouts and other effects.
If you would like to know more details, feel free to contact me.
Thanks for your response. It is just so frustrating. She is also starting high school tomorrow which makes things worse. Have you tried other meds or just the Solodyn? I also wonder if she is being over medicated. We are going to stick this routine out for a couple of months I guess. It's just this initial breakout is just out of control and getting worse every day.

here is my advice to you : TAKE YOUR DAUGHTER TO HER DERM AND ASK ABOUT ACCUTANE asap. i am a 25 year old woman who has had acne all my life.... i just was on accutane for about 4 months and it completely cleared my acne... my derm has prescribed solodyn to me to keep any remaining acne at bay, since i had to go off the accutane one month early due to an unusual amount of joint pain.
i SO wish i had known about accutane when i was in high school and would have been able to do it then... i spent so many years feeling ashamed about my face. get your daughter the only help that's proven to work as soon as you can... truly. the side effects affect such a small percentage of users that it'll be worth it for her.
i know this is a solodyn post but i had to plug accutane there, even though it gave me a lot of unpleasant side effects. my acne is 99% gone now and accutane has been the only thing to clear it.
after reading this thread, i'm reconsidering the solodyn.... i am still waiting for the coupon from my derm before filling the Rx... but it doesn't sound like it has helped that many people. hmm.

I have tried couple of more medications, but none of them actually worked. The most results I see is after the Solodyn. Yesterday and today I didn't have any breakouts yet, and I hope this will stay that way. I have been seeing results after 3 months while I was using Solodyn. I can just tell you that you need to be patient and the results should be slowly showing. Accutane is a really strong medication with many side effects and it can seriously damage your whole life.
I don't know, a lot of people have been saying that this stuff doesn't work, or that it makes them dizzy and upsets their stomach. I've been taking this for about two weeks and I've noticed major results. Besides what I think was an initial breakout from it or a retinoid my dermatoligist prescribed, I've had like one zit so far, which has allowed me plenty of time to just worry about repairing skin. (knocks on wood) I'm happy with what it's done so far, and I'm not even at the point where its supposed to work maximum efficiency.
I have found more and more people who have developed serious illnesses from taking Solodyn, i.e. lupus & autoimmune hepatitis. My daughter's liver function is now in the normal range, but it took approximately 10 months of steriod treatment to get her there. She will always have to keep an eye on her liver function. Hopefully, her condition has reversed and won't be a lifelong problem.
I want to let you all know what we finally found that worked for her and improved her acne problem. She had a series of IPL (pulsed light) laser treatments. It took 8 treatments, but she had a tremendous improvement. It is expensive, but the great thing is it is drug free. Don't confuse the IPL with the blue light treatments. She had two rounds of the blue light treatments with no improvement.
Okay.. after reading this I am very nervous. I am thirteen and have been taking solodyn for over a year. I had no clue you were only supposed to take it for 3 months. I saw a definite improvement, though. I am now worried about liver damage. Back in January I had to go to the hospital for tests since I'd been getting headcahes and little blackout spells. They couldn't really find out what was wrong but I suspect solodyn. I didn't have a tumor (thank goodness). I am scared I am damaged because I have taken it for so long. Do you have any suggestions?
Wean yourself off of them. You should probably ask your doctor about this, as they'll be able to tell you how much to taper off. Your acne will may come back full-force or worse than before if you stop cold turkey, especially after having been on them for so long.
See a derm about some topicals, or poke around the boards for suggestions. If you can tolerate benzoyl peroxide, I'd suggest you look into Dan's regimen. Hormonal treatment is also a better long-term solution, if you think that's the cause of your acne, so have a look at the hormonal medications forum on the board.

I've been taking 45 mg. solodyn ER and 100 mg. spiro for @ 1 1/2 months. The possibility pf solodyn causing tumors in clinical tests worries me. But I have seen improvement in my cystic acne. However, it's difficult to say, for sure, which of the meds. is responsible. It's possible, it's wishful thinking too, I suppose. I'm also putting on .05 % atralin(tretinoin) gel on at night. I'm looking forward to getting off of all acne meds. as soon as this flare-up clears. No more meds., natural remedies/holistic treatments only!! I'm 55 yrs. old and have been off & on antibiotics for 43 yrs.!! Fortunately, I've remained relatively healthy throughout(occasional yeast infection here and there). Good luck everyone. Thank you for your posts.
Beware Solodyn!
I was prescribed this drug in June 2008 for hidradenitis superativa. Six weeks later, I suddenly developed severe fatigue, dizziness, and weakness. When I say severe, I mean I couldn't get out of bed or function like a normal person. It progressed over the next couple of weeks, and I had difficulty sleeping and daily headaches, too. I went to my doctor 3 times over the next 2 months and had every test imaginable...blood, urine, and ultrasounds. She couldn't find anything wrong except elevated thyroid and liver enzyme levels (I have low thyroid, so it shouldn't be elevated!)Because the side effects didn't show up until 6 weeks after I started taking this drug, we dismissed it as the cause and focused on potential complications from the gastric bypass surgery I had in April. Anyway, my doctor finally exhausted all tests, threw some anti-depressants and stimulants at me, and gave up. As an afterthought, she refered me to a nutritionist/holistic health practitioner.
Within minutes of meeting this new practitioner, she diagnosed the problem--Solodyn--and gave me a printout of all its potential side effects--including fatigue, diizziness, headaches, insomnolence, thyroid imbalance, and serious liver injury!!! She explained that the toxicity from drugs often takes weeks to build up in a body. Two weeks after stopping the Solodyn, all symptoms were gone, and I'm feeling great.
This drug was "free" because of the coupon my dermatologist gave me when she prescribed it, but I have missed more than 2 months of work and have piles of medical bills from all the unneeded tests. It did clear up my acne, by the way, but now that I'm off the drug, the cysts are back.
This is a dangerous, dangerous drug, and I highly recommend AGAINST it.
I just got back from the dermatologist. He prescribed me with solodyn. Supposedly it's the first antiboitic to be approved by the FDA specifically for ance treatment. I dont' get excited about antibiotics but at least it's better than minocycline( which I've used ). Has anyone in here had any experience with it?
Like most acne medications, time is an essential factor. I have extremely stubborn acne, that is also hereditary, and took solodyn last year for about 4 months. It took 2 full months to see a difference. By the 3rd/4th month, my skin looked amazing. Of course, i still had scarring, but once i covered that with make up, i looked like one of those people who never get zits. I stopped, and after a few months the acne came back. I wasn't surprised. IM back on it, but I've also come to realize how important diet is in the formation/prevention of acne- or at least it is for me. Diet change is something anyone with acne should seriously consider. But back to the point- all in all, when used consistently, solodyn can have great results for people. dont get discouraged if your skin looks the same after a month and a half or so, even 2 months. wait till the third. easier said than done, but in the meantime, work on your diet, it might also help.
looking for a few suggestions...
i was prescribed solodyn about 3 weeks ago with retin-A. i'm not using the retin-a cause i've heard it makes your face red and irritated.
but i've seen a lot of improvement so far. is solodyn supposed to work this fast? i haven't gotten a big red pimple since i've been on it and my small zits dry out fast. however right now my face is dry, peeling, and i'm starting to notice scars that i never really saw before! i would put moisturizer on my face, but i feel like every time i put cetaphil on my face it makes my face greasy and i get new small zits.
i also get a lot of tiny zits around my jaw line, where i've been starting to shave more often. do you think that's a cause for some of the irritation on my jawline?
i have aloe vera gel for skin. should i use that?
i'm also kind of discouraged because i think my acne will come back once im off solodyn.
any suggestions?
I've been taking Solodyn for about four months now. However I've quit taking it because it caused some terrible side effects for me, and acne still kept showing up. The Solodyn did not make my acne go away at all.
Also the terrible side effects were very upsetting to me. Out of nowhere the medication started making me have these horrible and depressing thoughts. I thought it might be stress, but it wasn't. Solodyn was making me very sad and emotional. I was hardly able to sleep and I could not make those terrible and frightening thoughts go away. The thoughts even got to a point where it made me close to being suicidal.
I stopped taking Solodyn and very bad headaches started showing up. I would have three to four bad headaches in just one day. It's been a month now since I've been Solodyn free and now the headaches are gone.
If anyone is experiencing these thoughts and feelings than please ask your doctor and stop taking the medication.
I asked my doctor but they kept denying that the medication would do that. However they also told me that they have never studied someone who has taken the medicine as long as I have.
I don't think that this will happen with everyone, but if it starts happening than stop taking the medication. I don't want anyone to have to go through what I did.
I have been on solodyn (45 MG) for almost 2 years now. I also went on yasmin around the same time. While on both, my skin cleared up A LOT! I still get breakouts, worse during my period, but my chest and back acne are completely gone now and my face is minor.
My question is - I want to go off solodyn and stay on yasmin to see if it's just the yasmin helping my skin. I'm tired of solodyn potentially interfering with birth control, so I want to have an experimental trial period where I stop taking solodyn. If I go back on it, could it really take a few months for the drug to start working again? How soon is it realistic to see the effects of not taking solodyn? Sometimes when I miss 2 days, I think I see a difference but is that crazy?
Thanks!
~ Jewel

I had acne all through middle school and highschool. I was put on various regimens with antibiotics, topical creams, retinoids, etc., but my skin was horrible and nothing seemed to work.
EVERY LITTLE GIRL DESERVES TO FEEL PRETTY.
After my graduation I started accutane and within a month my skin was flawless. I didn't suffer any side affects what so ever. It only costed me $35/month with my insurance plan. I would do it over again in a a heartbeat, I wish I would've taken it earlier! I definitely reccamend asking your daughter's doctor about Accutane if the Solodyn doesn't work for her! Best of Luck!
I've been off solodyn for 2 weeks now (i stopped cold turkey after 2 yrs... i didn't read the comments warning against that). I'm breaking out, not horribly, but more than on solodyn and more than I'd like. Should I take a solodyn now and now try to wean off? I'm trying to see my dermatologist soon but these new breakouts are bumming me out!
Hi, I used Solodyn for over a month and it did NOTHING for me except make me EXTREMELY tired. My face broke out even WORSE on this medication. I had to discontinue using it due to the fatigue and ZERO results. I am so aggravated because I've been on so many different antibiotics and nothing seems to work for me. I hope you have better luck with it than I did.

it IS minocycline - isn't it?
Ive been on this for a month, 90mg/day.
It's another name for Minocyclene, apparently.
Without insurance, my doctor gave me a card so I can get it for $25/month for 3 months. Original price: $631 for 30 pills! They must give people who pay $25 placebo pills.
The first week I saw some clearing up and got excited. Since, it is back to the same. No change.
I wonder if it takes another month to work?
I wonder what happens when the 3 month period is up and I can't take it.
I wonder if it will work at all.
You would think for the price, it would be a magic bullet.
Only thing that ever worked for me was doxycyclene when I was younger.
Best of luck to all!
