Hi, I started Accutane 6days ago (10mg) and I think I'm having an initial breakout :( is this possible that I have an initial breakout so soon?

hey there!

dont worry, my derm started me out on 10mg, its possible that you could be having an IB, but dont worry, mine kicked in like two weeks, then cleared in about three weeks. its bad i knkw, but think of it to a means to an end :)

your welcome!

but yeah you get that, i was in the exact same position as you when I started accutane back in march. my derm gave me 2 months of 10mg, then upped me to 20mg in June followed by 40mg for one month, and now im on 60mg for the rest of the course.

i dont have any spots any more its just the fact theres red marks, and they will clear in time so im coming to the end now. usually when a new mark appears (which is rare) it goes in two days. just make sure you have a good diet, get a good clenser/moisteriser and dont look in the mirror as much as it will make you feel a bit more down (:

How long did your initial breakout last? And did you experience a new breakout each time he upped your dose? Sorry for all my questions...

I hope I'll get a great result, just like you! :)

Yeah you're so right, the first thing I do in the morning is run to the mirror to check my face :s I'm getting kinda obsessed I gues, lol.

My IB lasted about 4-5 weeks. The acne on my face would just variate, one day it will be fine, next it will as red as anything. And no, when the doseage went up it was fine, my body was already used to the drug, so there was no IB whatsoever (:

And yeah, just make sure that you dont look at your face in the morning, and the IB wont seem as bad. You sound like how I was, but luckily I kicked the habit.

Dont worry about the questions, I like helping others out :)

Hello!

I'm starting to take 10 mg per day, for 10 days of each month, after taking that dose for a month (every day).

Is it the same as if I took 1mg per day, or low doses?

Hi ! I'm new to this site and have a few questions. I'm a 23 year old female, 110lbs and was put on 40mg Accutane once a day two months ago. I had 9 pills left on my second month and began getting sick to my stomach and anxiety. I was told to stop taking it and I go Monday so they can re-evaluate my treatment plan. I have mild to moderate acne. Should I ask for a lower dose? Would a lower dose make my side effects less severe?

You should talk to your gp/derm about it. They would know best.

i am going on a low dose accutane regiment for my second go at this.

i think it will be better for me, and i hope to have permanent results. first time around it didnt stick, oil came back 10 months later. hoping a small amount everyday or a large amount only 2 times a week is the right move. we shall see.

i start again in 2 weeks!

@blueeyednycgal,

What dose are you going to take?

I just popped my first pill in.

I started to get raised bumps on my face, now i get little bits of acne appearing more and more.

I stopped Accutane about 5 months now (after taking it for about 2.5 months, i stopped after that time).

Gonna see what happens with 20mg every few days :)

i think low-dose treatments would be best. this is interesting information. after reading about the mechanism of accutane and what it does to cell division i read this. does the low-dose treatment of 120mg/kg mean that the total amount of mg of accutane taken should equal 120 mg/kg by the end of the treatment?

what would that look like for someone around 140 pounds taking 5 mg a day?

It means for every kilogram that you weigh = 120mg of Accutane.

140 pounds is approx. 64 kilograms so 120mg multiplied by 64kg = 7680mg of Accutane is recommended by the end of your course on the low end of the spectrum. The cumulative dosing guideline is 120-150mg/kg.

thanks. jeez, and that's the low dose?? that still equals a 40mg average for a 6-month period. i was wanting to take, like, 20 mg a day at most. maybe not even that... why can't i just have been born with good genes, argh. i'm probably not ever going to have kids. i wouldn't ever want to give this "gift" to anyone else.

do you suppose it would be plausible to take 20 or 30 mg a day just until it clears up and just continue to do ultra-low dose maintenance treatment? i haven't read about photo-sensitivity and other side effects in regards to doing that kind of treatment.

That doesn't sound like too bad of an idea but I don't know how long the spots would stay away once you came off the higher dose and switched. I don't know too much about low-doses of Accutane, I was just browsing around. I'm a proponent of higher doses up to a tolerable level and just getting it out of the way and increasing chances of having no relapse once you finish. My first month was 40mg, then 60mg for 5 more months, and I'm on my last month of 80mg. I was never used to having dry skin and lips but those are pretty much the only side effects I've dealt with and I only have a few more weeks out of 7 months total.

I can understand though from the point of view of the low-dose supporters, Accutane is a considerable risk to your body so it makes sense wanting to lower the chances of getting the harmful and possible permanent side effects. I'm 22 though and it was just to the point though that I don't give a rats tail anymore because I'm sick of the **** lol

I did my bloodwork last week and im still waiting for results. I was previously on 30mg per day until july and ended my 1st roaccutane course. Results were great until recently i started to get flare ups again.

My derm suggested on 10mg twice a wk for maintainence's purpose. I wonder if how this low doseage would help keep my acne at bay.. anyone here on 10mg twice a week?? reviews??

Hi, I'm new to this site, but I just visited my dermatologist the other day and he gave me a prescription for oratane. I'm trying to decide whether to take it or not because some of the side effects sound really scary! He's given 10mg to be taken everyday. He said i'll probably be on oratane for 9months.

I'm also a 20 year old student and drinking plays a big part in my socialising and it's also nearly new years lol so I was wondering if it's ok to keep drinking or do you guys recommend to stop?

im hoping someone has advise for me. Ive been on 20mg once a week since October 1 of this year. I have always had oily/dehydrated skin and was hoping that this would be my miracle cure. it has not been for me and i dont know why. Its been almost 3 full months and my nose is less oily but thats it. My chin is a mess with congestion and clogged pores that never go away. I get what looks like hundreds little whitheads in the crease of my chin that bulge by the end of the day. They all look like they have pus in them and you could easily pop them but you cant. I have hard mini clog in the corners of my mouth for months and months. I still get the occasional piimple on my jaw line as well. I am also as dry as a bone. I have never been this flakey and dry in all my life. Could 20mg once a week do this? Or is it not enough and I need to increase to get my chin clogs clear? It seems like I can extract them with a blackhead remover but they literally come back in the exact spot within a few days. WTF!! Im 44 and cant deal with this anymore...

maybe you need a little more than 20mg a week. regular course would likely be more than that per day, and while i understand you're on a low dose regime you might need a bit more initially to get things off the ground.

im about a month in a 20mg a day. ive had a few of those chin things like you describe and found sudocrem works really well
