low dose as in you'll be on it indefinitely or until you reach the cumulative dose? i was sort of under the impression NHS derms wouldnt do that kind of non conventional dosing

yeah, I went private. I had never heard of low dosage before this. I got tired of begging on the NHS. Regarding dosage and duration, to be honest I have absolutely no idea. I didn't think to ask because I was so excited. Once I know those details I can let you know. I'm such a psycho though because he asked me if I knew how much I weighed re estimate for dosage and my first thought was "how can I gain 10kg by Monday to get a super high dose and lose it again by Tuesday and do that on a monthly basis for the foreseeable future??" I am hopeful about the low dosage because I'm thinking I might get it for a long, or please ETERNAL basis. I was on standard dose Roaccutane in 2009 and it did offer improvement, but as soon as it was finished, skin went back to shit. It was nearly worse, knowing semi ok skin for a while and never getting it back. A continuous mild improvement would be a dream and a half come true

In Korea they do not blast you with 50-60 mg a day. Mostly half of that for 6-8 months. The rates of remission are the same though, both work similarly but of course the Korean method is a bit easier on the side effects.

But please remember that I am not doing low dosage. I am doing ULTRA low dosage for the long long term. Forever if need be. If I were you, I would suggest doing a standard round of Accutane FIRST before you try and experiment like me. Afterwards, you can do ultra low dosing for maintenance like me once you know where you skin stands after Accutane. If you do ultra low dosing like me now, I am not sure what that would be like because I did not do that. I took Accutane twice before ultra low dosing, my first course of Accutane dramatically helped clear my skin and decrease oil levels. But like I wrote in my intro, the oil came back and mild to moderate acne still persisted. This is why I searched for something more.

Is NHS as bad as the US health care system? They make it so difficult for patients to get the medicine they need and there are so many suffocating procedures and regulations. I hope everything works out okay!

Hello and thanks for your response. A normal dose to me would be no higher than 20 mg IF that. Doses in U.S. are too high to me. So I want to do the normal 10 mg-20mg a day. Does this cause remission in Korea then? I don't want to do the low dose until after, as you mentioned. want to try the "normal" course before doing anything drastic.

Remission is something no one on this board can ever tell you. Some people get remission and some people do not. You just have to trust the medicine and hope you are lucky. I am pretty confident your acne will get better, but I also know that you will not be perfectly clear afterwards.

10-20 mg a day will have the same effects as taking 60 mg a day (but of course you will take 10 mg a day a lot longer!). Don't worry so much about which is better. You can do either. The important thing is to take it and complete the course as directed by your doctor. Good luck.

This is your first time on Accutane? Is your acne severe or mild? If it is moderate to severe, I think a normal dosage would be best to get it over with quickly. But since you are under doctor supervision, you will be in good hands and you will have the best resource for all your concerns. Make sure to have good communication with your doctor. If you feel like it is too much or too little, the doctor can help you.

Keep strong, you still have more months left for the accutane to work and the initial breakout to clear. Once you are finished, your skin will be much better and the side effects will go away. When I was on accutane, I always feared that the redness and dryness would stay, but it all went away. Also a reminder, accutane is not a miracle drug, it will not cure acne. Acne is a disease that can be caused by hormones to the food you eat or to the stress you are having. It is great you are taking on acne with accutane, but I insist that we all take a more balanced approach as well. Keep us updated Kim!

Last time was 4 years ago on 40mg initially increased to 60mg. My skin improved but when the course stopped, all the shittiness came back

Yun, I so agree with the idea that you have to keep up with a good routine after Accutane. I stayed clear after my fist course through BC (Diane) and a little BP nightly. It was only when I dropped the Diane to try and get preggers that my issues returned, so my acne is clearly hormonal. We have decided not to have more kids (I have one and am okay with that), so I am hoping I can maintain again being back on the pill. Accutane is not a 'cure'. It causes long term remission, sometimes for life and often not. All people who try it should be prepared that they may need some maintenance after in the form of BC (especially women with hormonal acne) or topicals. I am just hoping the Accutane can get me in a place where all I need is some maintenance. We shall see. Thanks for the support!

Very very good question. It something I asked myself because I found that my oil levels (especially my oil levels) decreased very slowly but gradually. This is why I played around with 30 mg a week (I was previously at 10 mg). But I did not like the dryness of 30 mg a week so I just stuck it out with 10 mg to 20 mg a week. I am glad I did because my oil levels are much lower than when I started 211 days ago. So I believe it will take a lot longer for the accutane to really do it's work. This is why doctors prescribe a lot more months to patients who take lower doses because it takes time. If I were you, I would stay at 60 mg. Do not increase. Just stick with it for a bit longer man.

However, if your acne is severe to moderate...I would take a lot more than 60 mg a week. I would not play around with ultra low dosing yet.

"Your acne is gone, you don't need accutane anymore" =( that sucks. My derms in the USA are like this. They don't really know any other method of using accutane. They only know the high dose, one time one try way. I understand your frustration. It is so much easier in foreign countries (Asian countries) to get this drug. Don't stop trying though, don't just accept acne as fate, it's not! Best wishes to you guys and merry xmas!

Thanks for the response. I have my 2 month follow up appointment on Monday so I'll ask my derm but I think you're right - it's still too early to play around with the dose and Accutane can take a while to give you maximum results. BTW your skin looks flawless.

If you read the other blogs, you will find that some people get better after one month, but a lot of people also don't see results until month 4-5! Give it time JJ and don't worry, you will see changes. Keep us updated.

I was wondering about the price of a consult with a dermatologist in south korea. I'm now in korea and suddenly got myself with some pimples, plus my face is getting oiled. Maybe its thanks to the food full of oil here.

Anyway, would you care sharing the prices? Is it easy to find a dermatologist with a decent english? How much does the accutane cost? Does any pharmacy sell it?

Are you Korean? If you are Korean citizen everything is nearly free and 3 months supply of accutane will cost you around $100. im not sure how foreigners would fare. you really would need to go with a friend that can translate. pharmacy will probably sell it but I had to get a prescription first. Good luck!

Actually my parents are korean, but I'm on vacation and came to visit my cousin and, of course, enjoy this country.

Can't speak korean properly, so I'm going to try and inform if things go wrong hehe
