Just my 2 cents. I never tried this but maybe when it succeeds its due to the anti-fungal property
of all dandruff shampoos. Some derms are not 100% convinced that acne is caused by a bacteria only.
At any rate, I wouldn't worry about hurting yourself using a shampoo as a face wash because if it
could hurt anyone if it dripped on your face the mfg would be steeped in lawsuits, so use it & don't worry.
I've been using this for about 3 weeks now and had decent success with it. In fact It's probably the most effective and fast acting acne product I've ever tried.
I have really oily skin with persistent and moderate acne.
Before going on this I could run my fingers across my forehead and it almost felt scaley from all the little acne bumps. Now it's smoother than it's been in years. Also it cleared up the painful zits I used to get around my mouth and cheeks. My skin is also much less oily, although still oily.
I won't say this solution is 100% effective because I still get a few pimples every week, but it's a massive improvement.
I currently use it twice a day. Once in the shower in the morning, and once at night before going to bed. At night I just splash water on my face then lather it. Then I wash it off throughly. Be sure to do a good job washing it off as it can make your face red if you leave it on if you have sensitive skin like I do.
If it wears off in time, I'll post it.
My sister in law has super clear skin AND she's been using H&S for years as her shampoo. I will ask her tonight if she uses it to wash her face while she's in the shower. I am tempted to try this actually.
Has anyone used this who has those skin colored bumps...milia or whatever they are called? That is my biggest problem because I dont really get big inflamations..just those skin colored bumps all over my face ;(
I just looked up the ingredients in H&S and saw that it contains both Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate....then I googled those ingredients and this is what I found!!!!
"Shampoos with SLS could retard healing and keep children's eyes from developing properly. Children under six years old are especially vulnerable to improper eye development. (Summary of Report of Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc. conference."
"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate can cause cataracts in adults and delays the healing of wounds in the surface of the cornea."
"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate has a low molecular weight and so is easily absorbed by the body. It builds up in the heart, liver and brain and can cause major problems in these areas."
"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate causes skin to flake and to separate and causes roughness on the skin."
"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate causes dysfunction of the biological systems of the skin."
"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is such a caustic cleanser that it actually corrodes the hair follicle and impairs the ability to grow hair."
"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is routinely used in clinical studies deliberately to irritate the skin so that the effects of other substances can be tested." (Study cited by the Wall St Journal, 1st November 1998)
I'm cheap so I didn't get H&S but I just used my own shampoo, Loreal Vive Pro and it works great...I tried it last night and by this evening my face was about 30% clearer and I noticed there were less red marks than yesterday.
what the hell r u talking...how can it be in 1 day??????
GUILTY!!! ..went ahead and bought the H&S shampoo today and just used in the shower. My face feels the same as always. I am really scared because I have really, really sensitive skin. I am sure I'll wake up to a tumor (zit) on my face tomorrow. ;(
Anyone else still using this method?

*shrugs*don't ask me, I'm just reporting my results. Today I noticed my chin was clearing a whole lot faster than it had been before. It was awful. Now it's got maybe 2 zits on it.
Hi there,
My desire to bump this thread and keep it alive has finally made me take the step of registering with acne.org.
Why?
Because I tried the head an shoulders and am having excellent results with it.
I would rate myself as a long term sufferer who has controlled symptoms but still find myself on the product merry-go-round or risk my mild symptoms flaring up again. Part of the problem is that I have found that washing my face and body with soap is a big no-no and liable to exacerbate rather than alleviate symptoms. Similarly I find B.P. too harsh and have used topical antibiotics with varying degrees of success.
Before trying the head and shoulders I was washing face and back with nothing stronger than water and using the new clearasil ultra (with hydrogen peroxide) as a treatment. As I mentioned previously this had my symptoms mostly under control although I still suffered the odd face/body zit. However I was not at all happy with the tone of my skin or the fact that I was still getting these mild but persistent breakouts. I was looking for a change of regime and was seriously considering using Nizoral as a cleansing wash. In case you dont know Nizoral is a medicated anti-dandruffshampoo which contains I think ketoconazole as its active ingredient. I hadn't taken the step of actually using it given that I have had such poor results before with trying baby shampoos etc as mild cleansers. However, this meant that I was actually considering using an anti-dandruff shampoo (albeit a different one) when purely by accident I came across the head and shoulders thread. Reasoning that it might be less irritating or lilkely to produce side effects than Nizoral due to its lack of active ingredient and, buoyed by some enthusiastic responses from the guinea pigs braver than myself, I decided to give it a go.
As others have commented the initial wash was quite a revelation, leaving my skin feeling extremely clean and not at all irritated. It certainly was dry but seemed to be so in a good way, rather like after a swim in a chlorinated pool if that makes sense. I have been using it twice a day since the start of the week and continue to be impressed with the result. It's not bad for shaving with either. I could post pics but as I dont have any 'before' shots I guess that would be of little value.
All in all I would rate this as defintely worth trying given the (lack of) cost. However, as I have been at pains to point out, I would rate my acne symptoms as only mild at the start of using this "treatment" so cannot vouch for its effectiveness in more severe cases. Nor can I comment on how it would act as a cleanser in a more complicated regime. I havent even been using the clearasil as I haven't needed to but would be cautious about combining the clearasil with the wash and would be extremely nervous about recommending B.P. to go alongside the head and shoulders.
This post is meant as a true reflection of my own experience with Head and Shoulders rather than an active recommendation for others to use it. Especially as I recognise that I haven't been using the product for any great length of time. Oh yeah, if you get it in your eyes it stings like a "SuzyQ" (you'll have to google that if you're not familiar with Mr. Marciano's work).
Apologies for my first post turning into an essay.
Jeremy
My story is pretty similiar to Jeremy's above me...
I have been using HS for little more than a week, twice a day, on my face and have had noticeable improvement. Mainly there hasn't been any active acne and the best thing I noticed is that my skin feels much smoother (almost tighter?). I have had little patches of dry skin, but not bad at all. BTW my acne is mild but will sometimes flare up with some nice cystlike bumps that end up being very prominent. My skin is pretty oily too so I get fair share of blackheads and whatnot. I am not one to usually post, but in this case I thought I'd let people know that as dumb as this method sounds, it seems to actually work.
head & shoulders almost cleared up my forehead acne (comedonal)! it's the only regular shampoo i trust for my skin and ive been using it for years. maybe itll be more effective on my back acne (with which i am currently treating with nizoral ketaconazole. havent seen much improvement w/ nizoral)

Hi answerme thanks for posting about the Nizoral. Sorry you are not having much luck with it. I had been very tempted to give it a go, especially having been given a personal recommendation from someone at the gym. The fact that you are not seeing much result just reminds me that we are all very different and can't always get the same results someone else has. I think I'll probably just stick with the Head and Shoulders which has definitely helped with my backne, which was only mild anyway, just kind of blocked pores/milia which would sometimes get more infected/inflamed. If you give the H&S a go then I wish you every success.
An update for everyone else, I am still finding good results with H&S although decided that it was too drying to use on my face every day. As I posted earlier I have very sensitive skin though so others may not find this. I still use everyday in the shower for body with much improved results to any other wash I have tried but now use it on my face only when I shave.
Which isn't that often.
Stubble is cool 😎

I been using H & S on my face for 3 days now.... so far no significant results and really not any more breakouts then id normally have.... ill keep updated.... also after 5 months using H & S on my back i am starting to get pimples again.... i think its because i stopped using the tea tree oil water spray so i must start up again
