I just looked up the ingredients in H&S and saw that it contains both Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate....then I googled those ingredients and this is what I found!!!!

"Shampoos with SLS could retard healing and keep children's eyes from developing properly. Children under six years old are especially vulnerable to improper eye development. (Summary of Report of Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc. conference."

"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate can cause cataracts in adults and delays the healing of wounds in the surface of the cornea."

"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate has a low molecular weight and so is easily absorbed by the body. It builds up in the heart, liver and brain and can cause major problems in these areas."

"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate causes skin to flake and to separate and causes roughness on the skin."

"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate causes dysfunction of the biological systems of the skin."

"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is such a caustic cleanser that it actually corrodes the hair follicle and impairs the ability to grow hair."

"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is routinely used in clinical studies deliberately to irritate the skin so that the effects of other substances can be tested." (Study cited by the Wall St Journal, 1st November 1998)

SLS IS IN TOOTHPASTE AND ALMOST EVERY PRODUCT - YOU'RE OKAY 🙂

I have had a condition in my scalp that looks like acne. My dermatologist diagnosed it as "folliculitis" and recommended that I use a shampoo containing zinc. I've been using "Zincon Medicated Dandruff Shampoo" for about a year now and it has done a fabulous job of clearing up my scalp.

Recently, I began to more of an outbreak and my dermatologist recommended that I had a few drops of "Hibilclens" which is available at most pharmacies.

I add a small amount of the Hibiclens to my zinc-based shampoo and it does a great job for me.

Hope this is helpful....

Hello everyone, I have finally figured out the type of "acne" I have is not actually acne, it is folliculitis. Folliculitis usually affects people on their back/chest, however mine is across my forehead and around my hairline. This picture [Edtied Picture out] is almost IDENTICAL to what I have. I can't tell you how relieved I am to FINALLY know what the hell is wrong with me. I have always had clear skin, and literally overnight all of these bumps appeared, they are very itchy and look horrible! I did not get this diagnosis from a doctor or dermatologist, as they couldn't see my until mid April...and over the phone they told me I needed to use BP for acne, even though I knew this was NOT acne. Anyways, I am posting in the Head & Shoulders forum because I have read that is effective in treating follicultis. Does anyone have these bumps similar to the picture I posted, or has anyone been diagnosed with folliculitis (especially interested in those who have it on their face) Dandruff shampoo in anti-fungal, so that is can combat this fungal disease. However, Head & Shoulders Classic Clean as the active ingredient Zinc....the link that I posted says to treat folliculitis with Selenium Sulfide...which is the active ingredient in Head & Shoulders Intensive Treatment, and Selsun Blue. So it seems I should just go buy the Intensive Treatment, but someone posted on here not to use it because it turns your face red...? Sorry this post is so long, I am just so frustrated and want my life back...I have been totally reclusive because of this, I know it's not the end of the world to have this on my face...but I just need this painful episode to pass!!! My dad had some Head & Shoulders Classic Clean so I'm going to use that tonight, and maybe I'll call the advice nurse and ask their opinion...even though she will probably tell me to use BP again...urgh! Any help/comments is greatly appreciated! This has been hell, at least I know what I have..now I just need to find the cure! Thanks everyone.

P.S. I have been doing a lot of reading and follicultis is often misdiagnosed as acne, so make sure you know what kind of acne/bumps you are dealing with. To read further about folliculitis visit this site [Edited link out]scroll down to folliculitis and it talks about using selenium sulfide

I actually found this topic very interesting, enough to try it. Does anyone know if using H&S pyrithione zinc dandruff shampoo classic clean will be too hard on my skin if I'm taking accutane? I'm going to be starting accutane next week, so basically I have no choice but to give up the regimen and thought this sounds like a good substitute for my whole body and face.

I would not put this on my hair, and I would definitely NOT put this on my face or neck!!!

Water , Ammonium Laureth Sulfate , Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate , Glycol Distearate , Cocamide MEA , Ammonium Xylenesulfonate , Fragrance , Dimethicone , Cetyl Alcohol , Sodium Benzoate , Citric Acid , Stearyl Alcohol , Disodium EDTA , Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose , Hydrogen Peroxide , Sodium Chloride , Methylchloroisothiazolinone , Methylisothiazolinone , Sodium Citrate , Red 4

Also, NEVER use any products with SLS...very bad stuff!

Head and shoulders abuses animals. Any cruelty-free products with the same effect?

Just to clarify quickly, since I'm new here. I have had what I though was acne on my upper thighs since I was 11, now I think it may be folliculitis. Will head and shoulders work for both?

Ok, I think I'm a little late to this topic, but I've been thinking about using H&S on my face for awhile now, so I'm excited to have found this! I'm glad it's working for so many people, and I'm definitely going to start doing it! I don't have bad acne anymore, it's extremely light compared to what I once had, maybe four or five tiny white heads and occasionally a really big deep one that doesn't surface if I apply bp. (I really just stopped messing with my face so much and using cleaner water than my crappy rusty country well water). My problem now is that my skin is just not nice looking, it's red and bumpy and flaky and dry and scaly and oily! I found out though, that I have seborrhoeic dermatitis (undiagnosed) which I guess is more than just the extremely bad dandruff that I get, it is what causes me to have dry, oily, red, flaky skin on my forehead and around my nose. So I'm wandering if anyone else might have this same problem causing they're acne and other skin problems? Maybe it is for those people that the H&S really worked, and I'm hoping it will solve my skin problems!

Now if only I knew what to do about my red marks!

found somthing interesting that might help prove that this stuff could possibly work (im loving it so far)

I've been using store brand cheap dandruff shampoo for years as body wash. I was on Accutane seven years ago and my doctor reccomended using some form of dandruff shampoo for washing. I tried tar based, T-gel, Selsun Blue and Head and Shoulders. All worked fine, but I've found that the cheap, store band Head and shoulders knock-offs work great for me. No need to spend $24 on something that's probably nothing special anyway other than some inactive ingredient, or fancy marketing. Get a big bottle for $3.50.

1 1/2 years of the Accutane cured my cystic back acne, but still use the dandruff shampoo to this day because my skin still gets itchy sometimes using normal soaps.

I just met a poor guy at the gym today with bad back acne, and I told him about Accutane and using dandruff shampoo. I hope he get's cured like me. I keep a big bottle in my gym bag.

READ THIS!

I've been using head and shoulders on my chest/back (and even my freakin arms because I got whiteheads there sometimes too!) since around x-mas time. I had extremely bad bacne extending to even my lower back. I went to a dermatologist for treatment for my face and body and the antibiotic I was put on completely cleared my face but my back wasn't improved at all. (The antibiotic cleared my face at first but wore off and made my face just as bad if not worse... I would not request antibiotics.) Anyways... head & shoulders CLASSIC CLEAN has been a miracle for my body acne. I noticed the best results when I lathered the h&s on and did not rinse it off fully... another thing that I would request is to rub the h&s into problem areas after you have dried off (don't go in the sun if you have a lot on your skin though because it creates a nasty sun burn). I read previous posts about not using it on your face because it is too drying... after reading this thread though it seems like it works wonders. I am going to begin tonight and I will keep everyone posted on the results of my moderate-severe acne on my face.

Hi all

I is a high possibility that anyone with oily skin and acne actually has 'Seborrheic dermatitis'. Yeast lives in normal healthy skin but florishes in oily conditions that can cause acne breakouts, redness, flakiness, and sometimes scaliness of the skin or scalp. Heads and Shoulders works well because ingrediant 'pyrithione zinc' kills the yeast. As also mentioned in this thread by another poster- try out this cleanser and body wash specifically designed for SD and follow instructions carefully (work a lather with water, rather than applying cleanser directly to your face): [Edited link out]SD is also improved with antifunal creams eg miconazole, but use them sparingly as directed in instructions. Hope this info helps. I'm in control of my SD now but it took a while to diagnose, treat, skin to repair etc

How's the stuff working for your face? I just started using the intensive stuff for my beard area because I think i'm getting folliculitis there or something. It has been itching like crazy for the last week, i started this two days ago and noticed a slight improvement so far.

Anyone else have a bunch of little bumps appear after washing your face with the H&S? I've been washing my face with it in the morning for 3 days, and a bunch of little bumps have popped up--most of them very small and flesh colored, some of them are a little bit red. The acne I had when I started seems to be improving, but I am just worried because these bumps just keep multiplying, and I am afraid I will soon have a completely bump-covered face

There is no way in hell that I'm going to put this on my face, or any other part of my body!

Sodium Laureth Sulfate , Sodium Lauryl Sulfate , Cocamide MEA , Zinc Carbonate , Glycol Distearate , Dimethicone , Fragrance , Cetyl Alcohol , Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride , Magnesium Sulfate , Sodium Benzoate , Magnesium Carbonate Hydroxide , Ammonium Laureth Sulfate , Benzyl Alcohol , Sodium Chloride , Methylchloroisothiazolinone , Methylisothiazolinone , Sodium Xylenesulfonate , Blue 1 , Red 4

What are we...human experiments, let's see what this crap does!

Serious bump here lol

I am so lucky, I just found a container of this stuff below the sink and its the right shampoo as mentioned! This explains why I had no body pimples last winter because I was accidently using shampoo as a body wash, my skin was smooth and when I stopped using it a few months later in 2010, it came back. I'm going to use this along with benzyl peroxide. I'm also water and juice fasting for a week which will clear me up within a matter of days.

I'm too excited! lol

WOW!!!! This stuff really works for your body no doubt! I read this thread and ran to wall-mart and bought H&S classic took a shower put it on my face and chest and back. When I got out of the shower my chest acne was 95% gone seriously no more redness or anything. This stuff did a good job drying up my face so I put moisturizer on at night, but this stuff really dries out face. BTW, What's a really good moisturizer that people with oily skin can use? just started right now so i'll keep you guys updated.

Good evening all! I'll be trying this tonight. I went through all the pages and I found a lot more people getting better skin than those taking steps backwards. I am excited yet nervous at the same time. I had a really bad breakout over my cheeks a few months ago, which have left red marks. Basically I'm just a discoloured mess at 17. Nothing seems to work, so I will literally be stunned if a shampoo for dandruff is the cure.

Excited, will post tomorrow morning about the progress! ;)

I'm definitely going to be a regular poster in this thread. Awkward.

Well, I just put it on the first time. A little background about my shampoo, it's not brand new and it has been in the shower for quite a while, with the lid open and gathering water. When I poured it onto my hand it appeared like water, though once I started rubbing it foamed up and I managed to wash my face (love the smell). Obviously I can't report anything right now, though it didn't sting at all, and I did not moisturize. I've got terribly oily skin, though for the most part I use Vitamin E cream on my cheeks for some scarring.

If you've got any questions, don't be afraid to ask. I will update you when I wake up in the morning. Currently my skin is looking pretty bad. Just a whole lot of discolouration and some red marks everywhere, basically. I've got a large pus- filled pimple above my lip that isn't looking too hot.

I've been using this day and night for the past 3 days, and I've seen progress already! Firstly, my cheeks are incredibly smooth and since they don't have any active zits (or have for a few weeks), they look pretty insanely good! Now, for what I think is the negative, I'm not convinced it's clearly up my pimples actively. Well, it definitely does clear them up once there, but they just seem to pop up again. I'll post back in a few days! So far, seeing quite good results. :)

Please keep us updated possiblyHopeful!

I used to use Head and Shoulder to wash my hair and face (2x a day when I shower)...but I stopped about a week ago. Winter is coming up and I don't want to dry out my face. I feel that is the main reason (drying/irritating) my acne gets much worse in the winter. I now use the baby shampoo by johnson & johnson which has minimal chemicals in it.

My plan this winter is to pretty much just use moisturizer. I'm 23.....and tired of acne. I just want to stop conditioning my face with all these products that pretty much dry out my face.

I used to get a lot of cystic acne along my hairline and occasionally on my scalp. I started using dandruff shampoo exclusively despite not having dandruff and this eliminated the acne around and under my hair. I continued to get all types of acne, including cystic, on my face but no longer around my hairline. On occasion I've reinforced this fact by h regular shampoo for a week and having the hairline acne return. So, of course, after confirming this I tried to wash my acne-ridden face with the anti-dandruff shampoo, however, this didn't seem to have the same effect on my face. That being said, and along the same lines, I started taking zinc supplements shortly thereafter (since the active ingredient in the anti-dandruff shampoos is often zinc pythione). I tried a month of one type of zinc supps with limited success, switched to zinc piccolinate and have been clear for some time now. I haven't been clear for decades so, so far so good. I would recommend anyone with acne around their hair to try anti-dandruff shampoo for a few weeks, it worked for me.
