There is little to no scientific research explaining the difference between S8 (elemental sulfur) and S04 (sulfate) with regards to dermal absorption or utilization.
The fact is we have no idea how or why they work. But both seem to work similarly, and both contain the element sulfur.
In my experience Epsom Salt works with little to no dryness. Certainly it's never caused any peeling, which would be a plus for most.
We do understand however, how the extra magnesium ion is absorbed directly through the skin and into the bloodstream. Blood tests have proven elevated levels of magnesium in the blood after having soaked in Epsom Salts. This should be considered a wonderful side benefit, considering most modern diets leave us severely lacking in the required levels of magnesium.
I had amazing results with a prescription sulfur wash (rosaderm maybe?). I have used the same ointment as you, and while it cleared the spots I was treating, it also gave me bad lizard face for a week afterward! Be careful with your application; shit is powerfully drying!
I love that the De La Cruz 10% sulfur ointment is unscented. I was looking this morning for an unscented sulfur soap, and found one I'd never noticed before called Cuticare. I wondered if anyone here has tried it. Here's a link: http://www.cuticareproducts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=PN%201001

That bar soap looks great. I would also like to know if anyone has used it? And, would you use it along with the De La Cruz ointment, or instead of?
I'm constantly looking for something to help my son. Right now he's washing with Benzac 5%. At first I thought it was working, really helping to dry up the bumps, but now I'm not really sure. I'm losing faith in it. Plus I know that BP is not really good for the skin. His acne keeps getting worse as he gets older. Maybe I'll get him something sulfur based. He's never tried sulfur. But all this stuff I'm reading about it sounds great! Almost too good to be true though I mean, something that actually works and is so cheap??? Sounds like heaven

I've ordered the soap and should get it tomorrow. I'll let you know what I think of it compared to the De La Cruz ointment. Using them both might be too drying, but it could work well depending on your situation. My son got very clear from the ointment. It took about a month leaving it on every night. The ointment is a little messy, so I'm hoping the soap will stand in for it. I may have my son pair the soap up with something else.too. We'll see.

How old is your son now? And he left the ointment on all night? I read that it's really bad to leave it on for so long. My son is a messy sleeper, LOL... turning over all the time, smashing his face into his pillow, drooling.... So you get the picture. I doubt he would go for leaving something on his whole face all night. When he was using Lerosett, he would sleep with spot treatments on, but not a whole mask. Aren't you supposed to rinse it off after 15 minutes?
I see that the OP never responded recently... I too wonder if he is still clear. I guess his post is 1-2 yrs old now.

He's 15. We tried following the instructions to leave it on for 10 or 15 minutes and then rinse off, but it didn't seem like it was doing much. Then I called the company and a helpful associate told me to up it to 1 hour. And if that didn't work, it was okay to leave it on all night. This did the trick. I'm lucky that my son usually sleeps on his back. Maybe the soap will wrok out bette for your son. Mine hates to wash his face for some reason. But he is getting acne onhis back and I hope he'll use the soap while he's inthe shower.
By the way, the sulfur stopped working after about 3 months. Maybe becasue we used it so aggressively, not sure. But we switched to salicylic acid after that, which has kept him pretty clear after the sulfur treatment. He is having some flare-ups now, and he may be able to use the sulfur again.
oh no!!! don't tell me the sulfur stopped working... I was just getting hopeful. I am at a loss... every time I read about something working (sulfur, African black soap, etc) and then research it, I find out that it stops working, or clogs pores, whatever. this is really like the never-ending bad dream that we will never wake up from..
I'm glad your son is getting some relief now, with the salicylic acid. I bought some African black soap yesterday, and used it on myself and I like it so far. My face felt very clean afterwards, and seemed less oily this morning. I had my son use it gently this morning too, instead of his usual Benzac 5% wash. I would like to switch him back to something more natural to wash with. However, I just read that the black soap can be comedogenic because of the coconut oil in it. this is sooo frustrating. I don't know if I should have him keep using it.
btw he has used a salicylic acid toner before (with the Lerosett) and it seemed OK but didn't seem to do much, so he stopped.

When I looked into the black soap I was told it has a high pH, not something you want if you are battling acne.
It does seem that we have to think ahead and be ready with a new approach every so often. For whatever reason, certain regimens lose their effectiveness after a while. The last time my son used sulfur was last summer, so I am hoping that his skin has had a long enough break from it and his skin will respond to it again. It looks like my son will always need to use one of the keratolytics - in particular, salicylic acid, lactic acid, sulfur or retin A. Actually, so do I.

Thanks for the info about the black soap... but I thought a high pH was good..? Doesn't that mean it's more alkaline? I get confused about the pH thing. I guess I won't have my son use the black soap for now, but instead get him the sulfur soap. I looked at the CutiCare website again, and it looks really good. All their info makes sense.

Here's a thread about pH: http://www.acne.org/messageboard/topic/144725-why-ph-is-important-skin-products-acids-etc/
I received the 10% sulfur soap today. It has more of a scent than I expected. I'll let you know our results with it.
Thank you so much for the thread about pH! Lots of great info there. I called the company who makes the African black soap that I bought, and asked what the pH is. The girl was very pleasant, but didn't know the answer. She took my number & said she would ask & get back to me. She said in the 3 yrs she's worked there, no one has ever asked her that question. I was a little surprised by that.
So today I found the De La Cruz sulfur ointment at a local Walgreens I just used it on myself, left it on for 10 minutes & now my face is pretty red. Do you know if that's normal? It feels pretty clean though. And while it was on, my face really itched but I refrained from touching it. It still itches a little now. Did your son have any itching while he used it? I'm going to have my son try it in a few minutes.
How do you like the Cuticare soap so far?
No, my son didn't experience itchiness using the De La Cruz ointment. But his face was quite oily and he doesn't wash his face with a cleanser. So maybe the ointment is itchier when the skin is really clean. When I called the representative at dlc labs, he told me not to worry about washing his face, just to put it on over his oily skin. I think I talked to that man about 3 times as he was first trying it out. I wish I had kept a diary so I could recall exactly what happened in the process to get him clear. But I seem to remember that it got a little worse before it got better. I'm thinking maybe 2 weeks of it being a little worse, not a lot. But you must know that my son's skin was really bad at the time - cysts, whiteheads, comedones, you name it.
In addition to the sulfur, he took (and still takes) Rainbow Light Active Teen supplements and about 4-6,000 iu of Vitamin E because he was inside a lot last summer when we went through this ordeal. He has a small amount of dairy, not much though, and has a pretty healthy diet. He loves salads and healthy food, which is helpful.
I'm not sure about the Cuticare soap. Too early to tell. I'm not feeling too hopeful about it though, because the sulfur doesn't stay in contact with the skin as long as a topcial does.

So the man at DLC told you to have your son put the ointment on over his dirty, oily face? That's interesting. My son is used to washing his face twice a day, morning and night. I guess I could have him try the ointment on a dirty face. It would be hard to get used to though. Right now we're both washing with the African black soap, and using the ointment 1x each evening (not sleeping in it). I wonder if that is too harsh. We both noticed that this morning when washing our faces w/the black soap, it burned a little. I'm thinking it's b/c we did the sulfur ointment last night, b/c we didn't experience the burning before I had bought the ointment. do you think it's too much to use both? I wish someone could just tell me what to do That's great that your son loves healthy food, mine does too. He likes most everything, and I can get him to eat pretty much eat anything... even if it's something he doesn't like, he will still eat it if he knows he needs to... with whining/complaining LOL

Ha ha! Your question made me laugh! The man just said it was okay to apply the ointment over an unwaashed face. It wasn't like his face was dirty, just kind of oily. (If you can get your son to wash, lucky you! My son got so discouraged from trying acne soaps and cleansers only to have his acne get worse, that I think he is afraid of them. I still haven't been able to get him to wash his back and neck with the sulfur soap...he "forgets" lol.) All I can think of is that the interaction of sulfur and certain other products may not a good thing, so keeping it simple may yield the best results. Maybe just wash with water before applying the ointment.
Have you read on the web that most black soaps have a high pH of 9 or 10? If you really want to use it, some people follow up with an acidic toner, like diluted Apple Cider Vinegar or lemon. But then again, adding yet another component may not be the best way to go when using sulfur. Maybe you could use the black soap in the morning with an acidic toner and the sulfur at night.
I just started my son on Fish Oil supplements...I wondered how that would go over but I guess he trusts me...he's taking them! Actually, the eye doctor recommended them for dry eyes so i did have some help. I hope he will see some benefit for his skin too.

LOL sorry about the "dirty face" question! I didn't mean literally that his face was dirty, or covered in dirt... to me, an unwashed face is a dirty face. I told my son last night to not wash his face, so he just splashed some warm water on it, patted it dry, then put on the sulfur ointment. I'm trying to be patient, but it's hard. I am so so so so so so soooooo tired of this skin disease. Now I'm starting to wonder if it's a staph or strep infection. Mainly because it's really concentrated around his mouth (mustache area, chin, sides of mouth) Don't get me wrong, he also has lesions on other areas, as well as his back/shoulders/chest. But it just never seems to get better. As soon as I think it's drying up, new lesions appear. So now I'm researching staph infections. ugh
I have not researched much about the black soap pH thing... I've been using it myself twice a day, and I still like it. But I hope I'm not ruining my face. I hear Dr. Oz endorses it, and says it takes a few years off. Not that I put much stock in what he says... :\
Not all black soap has coconut oil in it and since raw black soap is different than SheaMoisture or other brands, the ph level is going to be different as well.
I am using SheaMoisture black soap. It does not have coconut oil in it. It is a little drying but not as much as raw black soap. It is made for those with acne and is all natural. I would give it a try on yourself first. Then after a week if you like it, have your son try it.

So is coconut oil bad, in black soap? Because the one I'm using has coconut oil in it. Is that what makes the pH higher? My soap specifically says it's for acne, as well as other skin conditions such as eczema. I'm still waiting on them to call me back with the pH info... I bought it at my local health food store. It only has a few ingredients, and seems all natural. So far it's not overdrying my skin.. and my son is only using it once a day now, lightly. Now you have me scared that I bought the wrong black soap LOL
Coconut oil can be clogging for some. Others love it for their skin. You have to see what it does for you. I try to avoid it if possible. However, my daughter is using natural black soap that likely does have coconut oil in it. She likes it and feels it's clearing up her acne better than the previous soap we were using.

Regarding the Cuticare soap, I am not comfortable with using it on my face. It leaves a waxy feel that just "feels" pore clogging to me. The De La Cruz is my favorite sulfur treatment so far - the ingredients are simple and it washes away completely.

OK... I'm still using the black soap w/the coconut oil, and I've been liking it, but in the last several days I've gotten about 2-3 fairly deep bumps. They aren't terribly red or inflamed, though. I'm not sure if it's from the soap, or what... My son is using it, and has not had this problem. hmmmm so I don't know if it's the soap or not..? I'll keep an eye on it. thx for the info!

Regarding the Cuticare soap, I am not comfortable with using it on my face. It leaves a waxy feel that just "feels" pore clogging to me. The De La Cruz is my favorite sulfur treatment so far - the ingredients are simple and it washes away completely.
Interesting about the Cuticare soap... it looked so promising on the website. But the fact that it was developed by a veterinarian left me a little confused, LOL. I agree about the DLC sulfur stuff... I like that it's so easy to wash off, and it's not as messy as I thought it would be. My son is still using it each night, and sometimes overnight as a spot treatment to dry up stubborn big ones. It seems to be drying things up, but not too much. And I love that it's so cheap!!!
Coconut oil can be clogging for some. Others love it for their skin. You have to see what it does for you. I try to avoid it if possible. However, my daughter is using natural black soap that likely does have coconut oil in it. She likes it and feels it's clearing up her acne better than the previous soap we were using.

Yeah, it seems to be a very straight forward product, with no extra irritating ingredients. Glad to hear it's working out so far! No redness or flaking yet? (My son never had that, but others have reported it.)
