Yeah. I do eat kimchi. That's the only "probiotic" thing I can eat with no reaction. I don't know why.
What about pickles? Making them at home is really fun, and much more tasty!
I've read on the forums here that turmeric (and thus probably curcumin) also do good things for the gut. How's the turmeric pills working out for you? Do you add black pepper in them for absorption?
Congrats.....i have been on Paleo for 2 months and take probitoics and my acne is probably at the worse i've seen it. I think paleo if is going to clear you up will do it in a decent time frame - how long did it take you to get clear via paleo
Sasch,
I'm sure others would agree with me, and from your gallery pictures, even ones where you say you had/are having bad acne, I see NO acne. Maybe some pimples here and there, but I don't even see blackheads or pores. Seeing your posts of that time were also about the acne you were presumably posting pictures of, I'm going to go out on a limb and say your skin is nowhere near as bad as you think it is.
Of course, things could have changed, but seeing as you're under a naturopaths care and have been dealing with your skin for some time, and are doing many things for it, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you are probably stressing yourself out way more than needed.
Those pics were taken when i was on retinoids so acne was not great but not horrendous (just some of the times). Either way it was always there and I would get new blemishes EVERY day which is not normal. It has since gotten worse, especially being off the topicals. Compared to others it is not severe and most of the time, not even moderate but it still bothers me and i do stress over it. What concerns me is that i break out EVERY day despite nutritional changes AKA Paleo. And the acne i do get hangs around forever and never seems to go away. i also do not have a skin care regimen down to control the acne i am getting. Tried some natural things and nothing seems to work.
I am working on my stress though and hoping that this supplements will kick in soon so at least i know i'm on the right path
I understand, no one wants to have acne, and most of us have a desire on some level to look our best.
But at the same time, learning to accept the situation you're in is important. 1. It'll help take off the edge of this current ordeal, and 2. It'll help you to be not so much goal oriented, but more behavior oriented. For example, people often sign up for gym memberships, but hardly use it. They want their ideal body, but never really get it - because they don't focus on behavior.
So instead of overly stressing that you have acne, mentally train yourself to accept it. Then think about the behaviors you need to have, such as not picking, sleeping well, and IMHO the most important thing in your case; not stressing! Honestly, taking a bunch of supplements isn't going to make your stress reduce, especially if taking that many hasn't already had a positive effect (either for genuine mechanistic effects of the supplements, or for the whole mind/body/placebo benefit that some people get from taking a heap load of pills).
To reduce stress, your efforts should be spent towards some self help style CBT.
I'd recommend this book, it's completely free, and filled with helpful advice!

Thanks Tim - i appreciate everything you are saying. I know stress for me is a BIG issue and i am trying to work on it. Easier said than done. I will read Skin Deep as soon as i can.
Can you give me some tips for getting my mind off of acne? I find this very difficult. I am in CBT and while it helps i still have a long way to go.

I wouldn't think people would start eating pickles once they eat kimchi. I love them so much lol, the spice and that taste. I have a big jar of kimchi in my refrigerator right now.
Hi!
I've been on Paleo diet + 2 glasses of natural water kefir for one week almost with some slight improvement.
However, I just read about white-coated tongue being a symptom of candida overgrowth. I have a white coated tongue plus bad breath in the morning, so now I'm not sure if I should switch to the anticandida diet first.
This goes to White Fox... How did you know that your acne was not due to candida? Just because your anticandida diet didn't work?
thanks!

I've learned the last couple of years that a white coated tongue doesn't necessarily have anything to do with candida.
Candida Albicans
Candida Albicans (fungus) is a natural part of the human gut flora. In a healthy individual the numbers of candida are kept under control by beneficial microorganisms and candida actually provide some benefits.
Studies show that certain things (e.g. antiobiotics, poor diets) can either directly promote the growth of candida or reduce the numbers or beneficial gut flora so that candida gets a chance to overgrow.
Moderate-severe cases of candida overgrowth usually involve some type of gastrointestinal problem. Why? Because studies show that moderate-severe candida overgrowth only happens when there's little beneficial microorganisms left to control the yeast, hence poor digestion.
Most people have missing species of bacteria and poor gut flora composition, but not necessarily moderate-severe candida overgrowth. Hence, most people will manage to get candida under control simply by adding several sources of prebiotics and probiotics.
Anitfungal supplements are usually only necessary in cases of moderate-severe candida overgrowth, to kill candida before new microorganisms have a chance to colonize the GI tract.

I've never cared for pickles much.
The turmeric is going good though. I definitely feel a medicinal effect from taking it. I don't put black pepper in the capsules themselves but I do eat tons of it on all of my food throughout the day (plus more turmeric). Since I've been taking it my cystic acne is going down faster and I'm getting smaller whiteheads instead of the big cysts. But it's hard to say. I think the reason I started breaking out again was damage to my gut because of all the beans in my diet, and I've recently given beans up and gone back to paleo. I'm not sure if it's the turmeric or the diet changes that are calming down my skin.

I'm not a psychologist, but here are some helpful links! Probably one of my favorite exercises is the letter from your ideal future self. You write about how things are better, the steps you took along the way, some struggles that you had and how you overcame them, comforting yourself, and things like that!
Journaling is great too!
Google the Hero Handbook, it has some great tips on how to be organized, inspired, and keeping up good behavior. One of the exercises is used in therapy that I'm particularly fond of; writing out your perfect day! Over time, implementing and acknowledging the behaviors you need to meet your goals, you should notice things moving closer and closer to your ideal day! Read those two documents daily, at least in the morning.
With skin picking, make post it notes reminding yourself that picking doesn't help! As the link mentions, try and replace the behavior with something positive. Whenever you have the urge to pick, say a mantra/some form of self encouragement.
Remember, the goals are nice, but it is more about the consistent behavior - the journey! Miley knows what she's talking about ( at least in that instance 😛 )

http://www.acne.org/...dysmorphia.html
Thanks Tim , will try this. BTW, i saw the link on acne dysmorphia and while i at times think i may have this, i do know my acne is not non-existant. It's there, it's obvious and it's not going to go away on its own. Still need to find a skin care routine and leave it alone - any suggestions on natural/organic skin care products (the DIY stuff has just made things worse: ACV, green tea toner, hemp seed oil, epsom salt mask)
My recommandation is to not obsess about a topical regimen; believe me, I've been there. If you feel that you have to use topicals you should find something you believe in and stick to it. There is no problem using topicals when you are improving leaky gut and gut flora, but it shouldn't be necessary when you are "healed"
I have been on Paleo for over a week now and yesterday evening had a terrible bloating. I had green asparagus and chicken. For lunch I had a vegetable salad (Brussels sprouts, chick peas, carrot, and green beans) and beef. In the morning I had a coconut milk+pineapple+avocado smoothie.
Today I have quite a lot of stomachache and issues with my bowel movements. Has anyone experienced this?
Yeah. I do eat kimchi. That's the only "probiotic" thing I can eat with no reaction. I don't know why.

I see, what other probiotic foods do you have? Have you tried home made yogurt from goats milk, or anything other than cows milk? How much turmeric do you think you're taking in grams a day?
Since you have issues with gluten and a variety of foods, I'm willing to bet cutting the beans helped, as well as the turmeric. There is a decent amount of studies on curcumin that are double blind, dealing with a variety of inflammatory diseases.
I was wondering, are there any other digestive disorders in your family
A good portion of people on my moms side have GERD, IBS, and acid reflux. I think at one point I had SIBO and/or insufficient HCL production, since I couldn't eat most foods without some seriously gnarly indigestion. Meat especially.
Yeah, I've tried goats milk, sheeps milk, etc. I was told by a doctor (or rather, a doctor told my friend and she told me) that almost no one reacts negatively to goat's milk, even those with terrible food allergies to regular milk. Well, apparently, I am one of the few, because it broke me out just as severely. I haven't tried making yogurt with it, but my reactions to all forms of dairy have always been so negative I doubt I would bother investing in doing that. If I was going to make yogurt I'd probably try it doing some other form of milk, like coconut. I've just never really wanted to go through the hassle of attempting it since I cook all my food from scratch anyway and am busy enough in the kitchen as it is.
I'm only guessing this, but I read somewhere that you can fit 8 grams of a powder into an 00 sized capsule. I fill the capsules as tight as I can and I take 8 of them a day, so I'm probably getting around 8 grams a day of turmeric, with maybe another gram sprinkled over all the food I eat. An effect is happening, no doubt. It's very calming to my pain, not only the pain I get from cystic acne but my neck and jaw pain too (I have really bad tmj and a messed up neck joint that pops and aches a lot).
As far as my family, I'm pretty sure my mom is gluten intolerant, because she gave it up and had a lot of things clear up for her. She was able to lose 15 pounds very easily and she'd been struggling to do that for about 20 years prior. My brother has ulcerative colitis which is pretty severe and needs to be controlled by medication. I've tried to get him to go gluten free but he won't hear of it. He also had really bad acne for awhile, I'm not sure how he controls that these days, but it seems to be a lot better. Maybe whatever he takes to help his colitis somehow helps his acne by controlling inflammation, I'm not sure.
Oh and I have a great uncle who died because his intestines fell apart, basically. He kept having to have surgeries where they would remove parts of his intestines because they were so jacked up, and eventually it killed him. I don't think they knew about celiac disease back then, but I'd be willing to bet intolerances had something to do with what was happening to him.
Just to show how common all this is, my boyfriend's grandmother died of celiac disease as well. She was told to go gluten free but never managed to give up her bread. She got cancer and was dead a few years later. My boyfriend and I are both gluten free and if we ever have kids they will of course be raised gluten free as well, with such a strong tendency for these issues on both sides.
Have you eaten all of that stuff before without any problem? Also, are green beans paleo safe? Isn't that a legume? I'm not sure.
Well, I didn't use to eat as many vegetables before going Paleo. I did not usually drink coconut milk either or brussel sprouts.
Yes, I just found out that they are legumes... I considered them vegetables. I guess I shouldn't have eaten this.
Do you know any list of safe Paleo foods that is easy to consult?
I like the way this one is organized

Although I bet there are more safe foods than what they list here.

Bloating and poor bowel movements is extremely common during the first weeks of this plan. The majority will experience initial symptoms (e.g. gastrointestinal, acne) when including new sources of fermented foods, prebiotics etc... This is actually a good sign that the diet, probiotics and prebiotics are causing some changes. As I mentioned in the first post; I felt terrible during the first 2 months, but I had severe acne, leaky gut and dysfunctional gut flora. Most people with milder acne and fewer symptoms will improve faster.
What do you mean by prebiotics supplement? Where am I supposed to find it?
I stopped BP a month ago and started prebiotics 2 weeks ago, right now my face (cystic) haven't been so bad since months.
I was thinking about getting 6-12oz of kefir yogurt daily, 2 probiotics supplements and my EFA supplements.
I want to ask you what I am supposed to take for breakfast? I think I don't tolerate eggs so if I can't take carbs/bread/fruits/eggs, I kinda don't know what to eat.
Again, I guess the initial breakout are normal?

Fructooligosaccharides is one example of a prebiotic supplement:) Can be found cheap online or at some health stores.
Breakfast examples:
Meat, fish or fowl
Avocado and kefir
Eggs
Kefir smoothie - Properly fermented kefir, berries and coconut oil
Quality yogurt, nuts and berries
Salad with some type of protein source
Almost everyone (except those with mild acne and no other health problems) will experience some typeof initial breakout and worsening. This period will last from a couple of weeks to months depending on the severity of your problems.
Regarding fermented foods:
It is very important to pick foods that have been fermented properly and still have live cultures.
Examples:
Kefir - Made from kefir grains, refrigerated and no added ingredients (e.g. sugar)
Yogurt - No added ingredients (e.g. sugar) and preferably full-fat
Sauerkraut - Choose raw and refrigerated sauerkraut. The pasteurized stuff you'll find in the shelf of the average supermarket has no live microorganisms.
Maybe you can shed some light on something--
"Kefir grains" -- What exactly IS that?
We were trying to find out because we ordered some awhile ago when my boyfriend was into making water kefir. He didn't want me to take any because it said "grains" and I just can't have anything that came from grains without dying, basically. I ended up having some anyway and got super sick. I think it's just because of the way I react to probiotics, but it's possible if these kefir grains were cultivated on actual grains then I could react to them.
I tried asking on another forum and searching around to find out what the heck these "kefir grains" actually ARE and where they come from, but no luck.
Do you know, whitefox?
Also, what type of yogurt do you buy? Sorry if you answered this already. I doubt I'll ever be able to stomach dairy but I'm just curious what someone on this path would consider a good yogurt.
