I got them free from a health shop and you need to put them with water, sugar and lemon for flavoring. After 24 hours, they have fermented the water so you strain them and drink the water (I only drink two glasses a day now). You repeat the process every day and you get new water kefir every day.
They don't have anything to do with grains" like wheat, corn, etc...
Aight, I am going to order those prebiotic asap, I have one last question for you, can I start a BP treatment again while doing this diet and stop it this winter without having fear to breakout? Because right now BP keep me clear of cyst but the day that I stopped it got worst than ever. I guess if I clean my gut I won't breakout again the next time i'll stop BP.
I might also see a doctor for the first time soon, I wonder if antibiotics could simply fix me? Problem is that I'm always scared that acne come back (it's frustrating when you have been clean for months).
Maybe you can shed some light on something--
"Kefir grains" -- What exactly IS that?
We were trying to find out because we ordered some awhile ago when my boyfriend was into making water kefir. He didn't want me to take any because it said "grains" and I just can't have anything that came from grains without dying, basically. I ended up having some anyway and got super sick. I think it's just because of the way I react to probiotics, but it's possible if these kefir grains were cultivated on actual grains then I could react to them.
I tried asking on another forum and searching around to find out what the heck these "kefir grains" actually ARE and where they come from, but no luck.
Do you know, whitefox?
Also, what type of yogurt do you buy? Sorry if you answered this already. I doubt I'll ever be able to stomach dairy but I'm just curious what someone on this path would consider a good yogurt.
Kefir grains aren't actually grains, but a symbiotic culture of yeasts and bacteria.
As I've said (multiple times) before. The fact that you react to fermented foods and probiotics is a clear sign that you have a dysfunctional gut flora. New beneficial microorganisms are foreign and create an initial reaction. You have to start with very small quantities, one new probiotic or prebiotic item at the time and be persistent even thoguh you experience an initial reaction.

You can continue with BP treatment while still following this plan. After several months you should slowly quit BP (Apply it more and more infrequently)
Antibiotic treatment is the worst thing you can possibly use against acne, and at best it only causes some improvement while you're on them. This is most likely due to the fact that they reduce inflammation and probably reduce the counts of certain harmful bacteria. In the long term you might experience a permanent alteration of the gut flora (supported by studies) and more inflammation,
Alright! can't wait to start it!! so basically, I have to found 2 different type of probiotics supplement and one prebiotics (Heard oligofructose is quite nice).
I think i'll go the first 3 weeks with simply meat, vegetables (Salad, Brocoli, Pepper, Onion only), eggs, kefir yogurt, Sauerkraut (looks good), coconut oil tbs, 2 probiotics pills/day, EFA 2:1 ratio tbs, + slowly integrating prebiotics (oligofructose), I'll get some extra virgin olive oil with my Salad. I'll continue using Zinc,Magnesium,Vitamin A-D supplements.
After 3 weeks, I'll slowly add fruits then some carbs (whole wheat bread, brown rice) & Sauce (Mustard, Ketchup?), protein shake (I want to workout again!), mushroom etc.
I'll do 10-12 weeks of BP twice a day, then once a day for a months etc...
I also want a blood test for my intolerant food.
Does this plan sound good? thanks again you are giving me hope!

Your diet looks good; follow the diet I put up in post 1 and you'll be fine:) It's not necessary to take mineral and vitamin supplements when you follow this diet.
You can probably add some fruits after 3 weeks, but you shouln't introduce those other carb sources so early.
It's great that you're getting excited, but that is also a common pitfall. It seems like you are rushing things and trying to do everything at once and very quickly. Don't start all of the fermented foods at once, and expect several months to see good improvements.
Good luck!
I have started to drink Kefir recently but i am now sneezing a lot and my nose appears to be quite runny. Is this a sign of detox or is it more likely i don't correspond with the Kefir all to well?
If the running nose has anything to do with the kefir, it is an initial reaction. Remember that just adding some kefir into the diet you are using won't cause any substantial improvement. Proper diet and several sources of prebiotics and probiotics are necessary to see great improvement
What would you suggest to someone who is coming off of antibiotics to try to counteract any permanent alteration of gut flora and/or recurrence of acne? This is one of my big worries. I've had decent results with antibiotics, but I'm tapering off (can't stop them all at once!) and don't want things to get worse than they were before (and ideally I'd like to maintain results).
As of now, I'm simply taking a few teaspoons of store bought coconut kefir water that supposedly has 100 billion CFUs per serving. Anything else that can or should be taken/eaten? Any other supplements?
Also, what kinds of pickles have probiotics? I have a jar of "Bubbies" and I love them, but I don't know if they actually have probiotics. Also (this may sound a little disgusting) but would the pickle water have any probiotics? I almost wouldn't mind drinking it.

Just incorporate as much probiotics (fermented foods, supplements etc.) and prebiotics (oligofructose, onions etc.) into your diet as possible:)
As long as you start slow it's very hard to consume to much probiotics and prebiotics.
Pickles you buy at the average supermarket contain little, if any, probiotics. Look for brine-cured pickles that don't contain vinegar.
Thanks! I'm going to start trying to ferment some of my own vegetables, too, and taking a probiotic supplement (once I find one that I feel good about!).
Also in regards to the Bubbies, after researching it a bit, it looks like they don't use vinegar and they are produced through fermentation so I'm thinking it should have some probiotic value. I'd also like to find some brine-cured brands of green olives until I really learn how to do a good job of fermenting my own veggies.
Also, this may be a dumb question, but can prebiotics also "feed" the bad bacteria in the stomach?

Thanks, i am going to try and introduce more and more probiotics and prebiotics in to my diet. At the moment i absolutely stuff my face with fruit as i'm scared of other foods and especially fats, the issue with this is that i am always bloated all day everyday. I assume it is to do with the fruit so i am trying to cut back but i know for a fact fats break me out so i am hesitant on replacing the fruit with fats. When i last tried coconut oil i was having a couple of teaspoons on some sweet potatoes every day and my chin was breaking out terribly. When i have had avacado's my blackheads get much worse. Do these sound like they could be initial breakouts?
I am currently on a bulking diet (6'2", HARD to gain any weight or mass @ 175lbs). I don't see how I am supposed to get any big sources of carbs in with cutting out legumes, grains, and most potatoes. I read that having sweet potatoes is okay in moderation, but I would need to eat almost FIVE medium baked potatoes to get 1k of carbs. Because of my diet, which is a little over 3000 calories, it makes it hard to be able to follow this as well as put on muscle. If you have any suggestions, please PM me. My weight lifting is a big part of my self esteem boost, because of my acne which lowers my self esteem.
Thanks for listening

That is not a dumb question at all; actually a very good one:) I've read several studies on prebiotics and gut flora, and the most common prebiotics seem to primarily support the growth of bifidobacteria (and other beneficial bacteria) in the gut.

You're at the stage I was at 3-4 years ago:
- Obsessing about certain foods breaking me out
- Looking at my skin the following days after eating certain foods
- Continually adjusting my diet according to "foods that break me out"
This is the biggest pitfall for most acne sufferers and the strategy is wrong:
- The consumption of certain foods ONLY contribute to inflammation and acne if you are not able to digest these foods properly. This poor digestion is caused by dysfunctional gut flora and leaky gut. True food allergies are extremely rare, but food intolerances (caused by missing gut bacteria needed for digestion) are very common.
There is no such thing as being "intolerant" towards fat, which you say you are. Fat is actually the macronutrient that can be digested even by people with poor gut health.
Bloating is a clear symptom of poor gut health.
Get on the diet, introduce prebiotics and probiotics. Stick with it for 3+ months regardless of what happens, and you'll be fine:) The anecdotal reports and studies are all there, it's just applying it and be persistent.
Good luck:)
Does anyone know what types of probiotics are in kimchi?

There is no problem following this diet when you are trying to gain mass. Believe me, I've been seriously into bodybuilding.
You don't need that much carbs, and increased fat intake is actually beneficial for your hormonal balance. Replace grains, legumes etc. with increased fat intake from coconut, dairy (e.g. butter, ghee), avocado, oil, meat etc.
If you have to consume a lot of carbs you should use fruits, nuts and root tubers and other vegetables as your carb sources.
Hey white-man, ive been doing the gut diet for a while now and i think its cured my acne. Note that im also taking accutane (6month) but my skin is not dry and i still break out to nuts and coconuts. Other than that i can handle as much fermented dairy as i please! Is that ok? Can i have as much as i please once ive been on this diet for 3 + months or so? Unfortuately i had organic whey protein and i reacted badly to it. So im not COMPLTELY clear :-/. But at least i have control > thanks a lot for your post
Does anyone know what types of probiotics are in kimchi?
"
Well-fermented kimchi is known to have antibiotic functions such as lactic acid bacteria produced in the fermentation process which then suppresses the growth of harmful bacteria. It also helps to prevent the growth of other bacteria in the intestines. For meat eaters, kimchi also helps to prevent hyperacidity that is the result of excessive meat intake and other acidic foods.
Further, kimchi:
- helps reduce indigestion and gas. Excess bad bacteria causes irritation leading to indigestion, gas and fluid retention.
- helps you feel less hunger. Lactobacillus, one common strain of good bacteria has been linked to appetite control. Good bacteria helps stabilize blood-sugar levels which means less frequent and less intense hunger and fewer fat storage hormones.
Some studies have shown that kimchi can shorten the duration of a cold. Other studies have shown that kimchi can help clear up yeast infections and UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections).
The juice and salt from kimchi helps to keep the intestines clean.
The chili peppers and garlic help to lower blood cholesterol and are an aid in blood-clotting.
"
Something I found about kimchi which may be irrelevant to your question, but it also seems that good bacterias even affect your blood sugar and insulin. It is said that it has more lactic acid bacteria than kefir.
and this may partially answer your question " Among the 200 bacteria isolated form kimchi, the important microorganisms in kimchi fermentation are known to be Lactobacillus plantarum, L. Brevis, Streptococcus faecalis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, and Pediococcus pentosaceus. Most kinds of bacteria belonging to the genus Lactobacillus have been found to be present in kimchi."
There seems to be many benefits related to gut, liver, enzyme, and blood sugar.

thanks a lot for your post
It's extremely unlikely that you experience so good results after only 1 week, and it's most likely the accutane treatment kicking in. Congratulations anyways:)
Fermented dairy is fine. What type of fermented dairy are you using?
Good luck:)
Look you guys, I FINALLY found a supplement that would be safe for someone like me.

It's really expensive, but I'm thinking about ordering it anyway. If it could help reverse this for me it's worth the money.
Tip of the day
Although butter isn't actually Paleo, it can safely be used in the diet for everyone. Butter and GHEE are very low in casein, lactose, hormones etc. that are usually found in milk and provide an excellent source of calories on this diet.
Grass-fed is offcourse recommended:)
Look into the Specific Carb Diet. It's kind of like Paleo but it takes it a step beyond. It was designed to starve candida and other bad stuff and feed the good bacteria and heal the leaky gut. I'm getting back into it now, I did it at the start of 2011 and my health was awesome, but over the next year I fell off the wagon a bit. I've been reading a lot about it again and it really makes sense to me.
