@lilweezy553 Gel capsules are the best. The gels are filled with fat which helps the Vitamin D3 absorb better. I would also recommend taking it with a meal.
@wicky A 50,000 IU dose that is prescription is usually D2 not D3. You need a much larger dose with D2 because D2 does not absorb as well as D3.
You can get a simple blood test to see if you are deficient in vitamin D from your doctor or you can order a home testing kit. I have started taking 4800iu to 7200iu a day and Zinc Picolinate.
Vitamin D needs other co-factors to work these include:
* magnesium
* zinc
* vitamin K2
* boron
* a tiny amount of vitamin A
As listed on the Vitamin D Council website.
If you live in the UK and are it hard to get higher doses such as 5000IU have a look at
I would recommend taking vitamin D at lunch time or in the morning not at night since it seems to give me a energy boost.
!!!!! you sound just like me! from the time and the weather conditions that you get acne, to the coment u had about dry skin, that is totally just like me. i also noticed that my acne clears up in the summer and gets really bad in the winter. i have been doing research lately about how vitamin d could help acne, cause ive been kinda of doing a trial and error thing like u siad you did. im going 2 get some vitamin d suplements and see if that helps, and see if it helps into the winter months. thanks so much for posting ur expirences. before i thought most of it had to do with face wash and stuff, but i guess vitamin d really can help acne. i know all skin is different, but u sound so much like me. thank you!
This type of acne sounds much like mine. Gets alot worse in the winter and I was completely clear during summer so vitamin d would make sense. I have literally seen results after just a few days on this stuff. Thank you for making this topic. I'll keep anyone updated who cares on how it continues to help or not help.
another possible reason for skin improvement could have been the increased ability to absorb calcium due to correction of vitamin d levels, calcium is involved in skin barrier function, theoretically acne could be a loss in skin barrier function where the immune system is trying to attack the bacteria as it tries to enter the body. this is just a theory i had about acne though, imaginative but not necessarily true.
I'm trying a high Vitamin D and calcium diet at the moment ^^ I'm going to the doctors to see if I can have a vitamin D test.
Does your PCP clinic have their own lab? You can go to a local one and shave the doctors visit. The test is around $80 in USA and around $30 for the CMP if you wanted to check calcium as well. Just a thought.
Hey everyone! First post for me.
Just started taking 1000iu per day but have since upped to 3000iu since reading the posts thoroughly (iffy about taking the 5000+ since you should see a doc for that much).
I'll update if there's a change. Fingers crossed! Damned cheek/jaw acne at 23.. It's not okay.
Hey,
I wanted to share my story here because vitamin D has also been my miracle cure.
I've had acne since I was in my teens and now I'm almost 30. I'm a female and have had to deal with it on my face, chest, and back - needless to say, life has sucked for a long time. I've tried everything, topical creams, oral medications, retin-A...etc. I've even had one doctor tell me acne is infectious and I can't share towels with other people?! So I've been through it all, trust me.
Then in my early twenties, I started taking the pill because most doctor's that I trusted told me this was really the only sure-fire 'suppressor' of acne. It did work, in a way, my face cleared up quite a bit and my acne lessened in severity. However, I was still getting enough on my back and sometimes on my face that I still wasn't happy. Then one doctor told me to cut out refined sugar and processed foods as much as possible, another told me to go to bed earlier, another told me to eat less dairy, the list goes on. I tried all those things - eating less sugar is definitely good for you, but I was STILL getting acne, on top of being on the pill as well. (I've also tried a variety of pills with different levels of hormones etc)
Now, I live in Vancouver, which is very similar to Seattle in terms of weather. Very little sunshine, lots of grey cloudy days. Everytime I would go on vacation to somewhere sunny, where I was in sunlight everyday (South America, Southeast Asia, beaches, etc) my skin would be TOTALLY clear, no matter what I was eating, no matter how late I went to bed, no matter whether I was sweaty and didnt' take a shower...nothing. My skin would be perfect everywhere.
So this year I started taking a multivitamin everyday with a good dose of vitamin D in it. I haven't been on vacation this year at all, and I didn't spend my summer outdoors because of work. So I wasn't in the sun very much at all this year, but my skin is perfect. I think I am going to up my dosage a little bit because it's only 400IU, but it has already made such a significant difference. I have even allowed myself to eat some sweets here and there and still my skin is perfect. Nothing else in my life has changed - not due to stress levels, eating habits, sleeping hours, etc.
So this is what I would suggest: if you live in a sunny country and are still having acne, cut down your sugar intake, you will notice a big difference, and I would make the assumption that you are already getting enough sunlight; if you don't get enough sunlight where you live, get started on vitamin D supplements right away! (It also helps to cut down on sugar for your general health anyway)
All those acne creams, face washes, treatments - THEY DON'T WORK. It's what is inside your body that affects your skin!!! Now that I take vitamin D, I just splash cold water on my face at night and in the morning, and put whatever skin cream I feel like on my face and my skin is still perfect - even if I don't wash my face for a week it's still perfect! I just can't believe I wasted all these years...I hope this helps and this forum is great.
Cheers.
I'm a long term acne sufferer (adult now, 25) who is currently doing a long term (2 month) colon cleanse and I have cut out all sugar and caffeine out of my diet. I stumbled upon this thread some how and I went and bought some D3 softgels just now. The one and only thing that has ever cured my acne very well was sun (once I went to Hawaii for vacation in the middle of a terrible outbreak and it cleared up during the vacation perfectly), therefore I'm starting with a reasonably high dose of 10,000 IU a day (two 5,000 IU pills, twice daily).
I will post on this thread my progress! Hope this works!
Hi again everyone , so it's been almost 3 weeks since I started taking 4000 IU vitamin d3 and I can really tell that vitamin d3 is working! But you have to give it time!, my face is not oily at all my skin texture is alot better (smoother)
It's been weird tbh, these last 2 weeks It's been very stressful and I've been eating junk food and candy (that I usally avoid, because I workout) and I barley got any acne at all!
From today on I will start taking 6000 IU vitamin d3 each day for like 3 weeks forward and then I will order vitamin d3 (5000iu) per capsule from ebay and I will probably be taking 5000 x 2 aday so that will be 10,000 IU of vitamin d3 per day.
But before I start with any higher dosage than 6000 IU, I'll update (probably in 2-3 weeks)
Good luck everyone!

Just stick to 4000 IU if it's working. Higher doses can easily cause side-effects in some people.
I tried around 9000 IU average for 3 months and I started getting diarrhea from almost every food and my acne just got worse.
First it was working well but too much is too with this vitamin too.
I TOTALLY agree here! I started two days ago with 5000 IU 2x a day and it has already started giving me hardcore cycts. I know its from these pills too because these aren't like anything I've seen on my face in years. Also, I've had some extreme itchiness of my skin on my entire body. So, today I'm going to throttle it down to 2000 x2 a day. Gonna go buy some different pills. REMEMBER D3 isn't really a vitamin but a HORMONE!

Yes I know that overdosing isn't good at all but, if im going to go for 10,000 IU aday then it wont be for a long period thanks for the advice
UPDATE: I have switched my regimen to:
Vitamin D3 - 3000 IU - Twice a day
Vitamin A - 24,000 IU - Twice a day
I also take other things, but since i started this regimen, my acne has started to clear up!
I usually get 2-3 new pimples EVERYDAY, but since i started this not one has appeared! Trying not to get my hopes up, but this spells promise!
My skin hasn't looked this good or gone in this direction of clearing up in a very long time!
UPDATE: Day 3 or so of adding Vitamin D3 and Vitamin A to my regimen.
I'm feeling like my skin is clearing up! I got one pimple when i woke up this morning, but it was small and just turned out to be an ingrown hair which i removed with some tweezers. Other than that, all the pimples are on their way out on my face and this is all going so well.
I can't believe I've found something that even starts to help my face. It's been a long time since I've felt this way. I woke up today very motivated (which I hate to say is not the case usually) because my face isn't a worry for me!
Let's hope it stays this way!
UPDATE: Well, upon day 5 or so of the D3 and Vitamin A regimen, I have broken out again. Hoping its because I started this more intense colon cleanse with psyllium husk/seed. I upped my D3 dosage to 20,000 IU a day as others on the board have done. I also got some "dry" D3 because I read its better than the gels because the gel can go "rancid", whatever that means. I'm thinking the rancid gel could have caused the itching i experienced when i started with the D3.
Also, I think alot of my new breakouts come from picking at my skin which I'm trying to stop. I hope this new dosage helps me.
