"Has any professional studied the reasons as to 'why' (and I emphasize 'why') this caveman regime works for so many? Is this finally leading to the truth about acne?"
Yes. Here is what i got from this thread so far (sorry for my Engrish).
Ur skin has = 7 PH at a young age. When u reach puberty ur body will try to become an adult. And adults have a better skin protection, 5.5 PH. But to achieve the 5.5 PH ur skin has to secrete more oil. Upon completion this is called the acid layer. It protects u against all kinds of stuff, also acne. But by washing ur face, u will destroy this layer, and it takes a while for ur face to form the layer again (14 days i believe).
Adults who suffer from acne tend to use all kind of stuff, like I did. Your skin loses his natural protection and tries to form it again. But with all the washing, topicals, moisturizers ur skin just knows 1 thing, its under attack and needs to form the acidlayer again. So it secretes more oil.
I think i am not the only one, but at the end of each day, my face felt like shit, i just had to wash my face and do all kinds of regimens, thinking this would benefit me, cuz after every wash, my face felt "normal" again.
I am a bit upset. After 5 days with this regimen, old scars heals fast... and I mean FAST. Scars that never healed on my nose, is starting to become less noticable and no breakouts so far, when my face was at it best i always had 1-2 whiteheads in the morning b4 showering, now i have nothing at all...
THis is just crazy, for years i have been doing all kinds of stuff, but all those years all that i did was making it worse.
In my teen years i had mild acne, like most teenagers. When i turned 20, my clear face had a huge breakout, i started using all kinds of stuff the doctor recommended. After 1 year my face was like shit, acne everywhere, even on my cheek... I never have had acne on my cheek.
Then I tried Dans regimen, it works great, but my skin never felt normal. I was clear, but scars wouldnt heal, and my face was always a bit red and shiny because of the moisturizer. I was clear, but it wasnt pretty.
Now after just 5 days... 5 days with no facewashing (just a bit of water on my face when i shower).... wth. My face is clear, scars heals fast. I just cant believe it. All those years, and the only thing i had to do was nothing at all....
This is retarded, and i think the millions of acne sufferers in the western world who have the luxery to buy crap for their face should know this. Yeah, i think we r the victims of capitalism, yes lets kill capitalism lol.
Will keep u guys updated, am excited and upset about this.
PS. Dan is doing a fine job btw, and ultimately he was part of route to the solution i found. But then again, lets not get too excited, acne is a bitch. ;p
okay so i get that the chemicals ruin our face's ph......so then what about water? won't that also ruin our faces' ph? i believe the only water that has a ph of 7 is distilled....every other water doesn't have a neutral ph....is that right?
Excessive will. Especially hot water. It dissolves the acidlayer way more easily, which in turn dries the skin, your skin will produce more oil and endless cycle is set in motion if u continue.
Once a day in the morning i take a shower, some water will run down my face, and at the end I splash some cold water over my face a few times. Thats it for the moment.
which in turn dries the skin, your skin will produce more oil and endless cycle is set in motion if u continue.
that is a myth. Excessive oil is not due to dry skin.
If this caveman regimen works for some...great...but i never did anything to my face but let shower water hit it for 19 odd years...never had a pimple in my life. Then I got acne. Never did anything to stop it but it got worse and worse.
My skin was in bad shape not becuase of chemicals but becuase of a disease. Never used anything on my skin ever...not even moisturizer.
I will agree that excessive use of products will cause the skin to not look the greatest. But then again so will acne. So pick your poison.
good luck to all not washing your face...but I challenge you...before you had acne did you not shower every day? I bet you did. But your skin was fine.
So it's the end of day 2 on this new regimen...
I wish I had good news to report. My skin has become less red but I've had some nasty breakouts. About 3-4 new whiteheads and several smaller ones on the horizon. I also have 2 new painful lesions around my lips.
I went back to the vaults and read about 15 pages of alexalmighty's experiment until my eyes got tired. According to him it took about a month to see substantial results. He said his skin was pretty horrible for the first month but started to improve after that. I am going to stick it out because I truly feel that this is the most natural and sensible treatment. I can tell it's going to be a rough ride though.
I wish I could just go somewhere secluded and hide for a few months but unfortunately I go to school and work a very public job full time in addition to many other things that require human interaction. However, it is very liberating to not have to spend 2 hours in front of a mirror everyday applying BP and moisturizer! More updates will follow.

[Edited link out] ... seems to think having a pH level of 4.5 - 5.75 is very acidic and the need for one to correct this immediately back to the 'normal' pH level of 6.75 - 7.5.
Finally, what role does the 'sun' and those undergoing a 'water fast' play in one's pH level?
Thanks
I used to do very hot showers, i always let the water rain on my back. Now i dont do it anymore, and only take 3min showers. Havent form any new cysts on my back, and the old ones are almost gone.
About that site. I checked it out, and it has nothing to do with the pH of ur facial skin. Its about the pH balance of your body, blood mostly.
Dunno what to do with the sun tho.

Thats because your problem lies elsewhere, and not because you use products.
I got the worse acne when i started using products, i never thought about the fact that the products could make it worse... Who would?
And yes I shower everyday, even with the cavemen regimen. Also b4 i got adult acne, i;ve never used a moisturizer, special cleaners, masks etc, I never washed my face, just splashed some cold water over it everyday, thats it.
I dont believe its a myth, if a skin is normally a bit oily then it will produce oil when it becomes dry, it doesnt only sound logical but it is true for me and most other ppl.

Right but it's an endogeneity problem...did your acne get worse because you started using products or did you start using products because your acne got worse? You wouldn't have started using products if you didn't develop acne...now it's possible that products irritated your skin and sent you on a downward spiral as you claim, OR it's possible that YOUR problem lies elsewhere and that your acne would have gotten worse no matter what, products or no products. I'm not claiming to know which case is correct, however it's something that people should consider if they dont see their acne clearing up while on this regimen.

Everything is possible. I didnt do any scientific study to back up my claims. I think the way i see it is most probable through my experience and that of many others. And i am pretty my acne couldnt get any worse, i had it everywhere, big ones. So am pretty sure that my acne wouldnt be worse without the use of products.
alright so cold water should not dissolve the acid layer? and does this cold water need to be filtered or tap is fine?
It does, but nowhere near the degree that hot water is doing. And i am just using tap water.
question to those on this regimen:
Do you wash your face with water? Or just splash water on your face. If you wash, how do u do it?

I have been on this regimen for a while now. I wash my face with cold water every 2-3 days when i shampoo. I usually will just take the cold water and wipe my face for about 45 seconds-then i let it air-dry. However, for me- the washing with cold water is not working---this regimen only works for me if i don't wash with water at all.....i'm giving up the cold water soon....something in it is def. still affecting my face. W/o the water-things actually heal.
I don't think you guys are really getting it. Stop talking about filtering your water and that shit. As I recall someone else brought up the whole "acid mantle layer", not Adam08 in the first post. He just said he wasn't going to wash his face. If your face is dirty, wash it, just try and remember how you acted before you had acne. That's my opinion.
And I think sweat helps me to get rid of the flakiness, just cause it seems to get some of it to come off naturally, but not with skin overall. But exercise is great for every system in your body.
magic- I do think that you should adjust to any regimen (including this regimen) to the best way that it suits you...you can't always do EXACTLY the same thing (of course, sometimes you can).. if you find out the same exact thing doesn't work for you, you can still do it by adjusting something here and there....
Apples- individual therioes are always good...hearing the insight of others helps
Yepican- i always wondered that too...
Sweating(mostly water in addition of other minerals) is body's natural defense system(to control core temp) which is why I hypothesize that one should at least try to restrict it during the trial of this regime(no water method).
And I believe one should not go too long without washing their face(even wild animals wash themselves), maybe two weeks at most and then start this regime again. This instills a process of replenishing the face with new oils... hence, a new healing phase. Caveman might have gone longer but we are constantly evolving to what is introduced in our environment and since cleanse has been such a crucial part of our society, it is only natural to assume that the body's natural defense against acne has somewhat diminished over the centuries in our genes. (I am not a professional and these are my mere theories which have no scientific background to them at all.)
I totally disagree on the first point. The biggest problem with the water people are splashing on their face are the hard minerals and chemicals like chlorine that are often present in tap water. I would say sweating HELPS this regimen substantially. Firstly, exercise is absolutely incredible for your body (even skin) especially running, there is absolutely no excuse not to run or do some type of work out.
Secondly, that doesn't really make any sense because from what I can see (and this is in plain view) is that tons of people can completely rid themselves of acne without doing a thing, and becoming "cave man like" is actually the key. The problem is food (especially dairy) and processed grains and sugars that spike your insulin levels to insane heights, the cavemen would have eaten incredibly wholesome things that don't cause extreme stress on the body like we do today. As for the process of natural selection you are talking about I'm quite sure that evolution didn't select for cavemen with more acne to survive did they? How can you necessarily say there was some way our bodies (that we don't even know about) fought acne?
I still think too many of you are taking this way too seriously. The purpose of this regimen is to do nothing. Some of you are still finding ways to make this regimen extremely complicated. Not washing for the first few days of this regimen may help your natural layers form again, but after that you are fine. I do not even think doing that is necessary though.
As mike said, make this your own regimen. What works for adam may not work for you. What worked for me may not work for you. Come here only for ideas on what else you can try should YOUR ideas fail.

I do too. I don't even have acne but will usually have 2-3 pimples on my face, but my biggest problem was redness after showers (even if they were lukewarm) or redness after shaving. I'm on day 6 or 7 right now and "doing nothing" is working miracles. I have 2 pimples on my face that are fading fast and will probably disappear by tomorrow and the redness after my shower was non-existent, hell even my shave caused no redness. Not to mention the fact that I have eaten tons of candy/chocolate the past 3-4 days and still no break outs. I usually have a good diet, but I felt like letting go the past few days.
It really fucking works. All of the chemicals were just destroying my acid mantle and killing helpful things on and in the skin, letting my body take over had been incredible.
I would like to say this is the thread that inspired my current regimen, so I am not here to talk crap, but rather offer my two cents.
To me, not washing my face seems sort of like an over exaggeration, same as putting 2 pounds of BP on my face everyday. The basic principle of less is more is where we all agree. I currently wash my face in the morning and allow 24 hour before I wash again.
SO FAR SO GOOD...
To each their own, but not washing and making sure water doesn't touch your face is a bit too far for me.

What do you mean by wash? Are you just splashing water on your face or are you using a cleanser? If you are using a cleanser I would really stop immediately.

Day 7...
My skin has gotten considerably worse. I'm having breakouts in places that I haven't seen breakouts for a while. My skin is blotchy and flaky and I have several new whiteheads everyday day in addition to the redmarks left by previous whiteheads. Only one cyst so far but it was a big one. I'm also having several zits forming around my lips which I've never seen before. This is definitely the worst my skin has been in a while.
From what I've read people seem to react to this regimen in different ways. Some people have seen success very quickly while others have taken months to see results. Even though things are rough I'm going to stick it out for at least a month or so to see if I make any sort of progress.
To elaborate on my regimen I'm taking I am Snow's approach and trying not to think about what I do. I'm only letting water touch my face when I shower and it's only for a few seconds. I'm showering every 2-3 days. I haven't shaved yet. More updates will follow.

Dude, do take a bath everyday but do not let water touch your face as much as possible. Do absolutely nothing to your face! It is healing underneath and is restoring back to it's natural state. Sit back and relax, try not to look in the mirror all the time, do not touch your face and do not think about it either. This way your conviction will not waver and you will have far more success. If you can quarantine your self while doing the recovery part of the regimen then do so to avoid self consciousness. When you get out on the world once again, you will show them your now-found-long-lost healthy clear skin. Keep positive outlook and be strong!
@Apples=)
Sweat and Oil are vital parts of this recovery process. Let it touch your face. Let it sit there! But if it is dripping to your neck then please do wipe it off because it's gross. But if you can let it air dry then do so.
This is the reason why:
QuoteSebaceous Glands and Eccrine (Sweat) GlandsThe sebaceous glands are clusters of cells that produce an oil called sebum. Two or more sebaceous glands secrete sebum via minuscule tubes in the hair follicle, from which the sebum is then secreted onto the hair and the surface of the skin. Sebum helps waterproof the skin and hair. Through the course of evolution humans have lost most of their hair, yet sebum is still produced in abundance. During the teen-age years, sebaceous glands increase sebum production, which may harden into a "comedo" and block the pore opening, causing the inflammation and infection that leads to acne.
The two to three million sweat glands on your skin produce a salty, watery solution (perspiration) that is transported to the surface through coils of cells that form long, vertical channels opening at the skin's surface. Sweat glands can produce as much as 11 liters (3 gallons) of sweat daily. The sweat glands do not use the same pores as sebaceous glands, but the secretions of both glands mix on the skin's surface to create the "Acid Mantle".

Remember that the "Acid Mantle" is what this regimen is trying and going to restore. Because we naturally have it and should have it.
Thank you wapak. I was just stating those from my experience.
I am just straightening things up.
Guys, do remember that different reactions happen to different people so don't go freaking out if you get a reaction different from what others is experiencing. Be calm and observe. As long as it is something that is not life threatening then keep it up and if it still bothers you then drop by here post your condition to inform others. They might be experiencing the same thing and you just do not know. Remember too that you are not alone in this endeavor. We are all in the same boat.
I'm still getting pimples in places they were before, but some parts that usually rejuvenate quickly are pretty clear right now, like around the mouth. The jawline is getting better but still has some, and many flaky red marks. I haven't shaved the whole time and am trying not too, but I look pretty weird with this mustache lol. I have been doing this probably 18 days.
Thanks Apples and wapak for your advice! I'm coming off of the DKR so maybe my skin is having BP withdrawals??? I'm not going to overreact though. I'm going to stick it out and give this regimen a chance because I really have faith in it.
The DKR honestly worked the best out of anything I've tried in the past 6 or so years that I've been on topicals but it still left my skin red and irritated. I had so many people, male and female, that asked me if I'd been tanning or recently gotten sunburned because the redness was so extreme. I stayed with it though for several months and it almost had me fully clear until Christmas Eve and then bam!! Breakout city. Now I had to endure days and days of seeing family and friends with not only breakouts but red and irritated skin. That was when I drew the line and decided to make some changes.
I hope this works.

For both of you and the rest who are into this regimen. While you are into this regimen, make sure to observe if there is anything that you eat that causes you to break out. Filter it out and eliminate it from your diet. Now, you must support your recovery or healing of the skin by eating healthy foods. If you want to introduce new healthy food into your diet then follow the step below to safely bring you towards your goal:
- After being into the no water part of the regimen, check out if you are no longer breaking out or you are clear for almost a week even if you are still flaking or drying out.
- Once you confirm that you are no longer breaking out then list your current diet and save it somewhere as a reference later.
- At this point, search out there in the internet what foods promote skin repair. Or if you prefer to search by using nutrients then google what nutrients promote skin repair and search out what foods provide those nutrients you found.
- Make a list of the foods that you consider introducing into you diet.
- Now this is the tricky part so pay close attention, introduce the food into your diet.
- Remember to experiment, try taking little amounts first then observe for a couple of days if you are not breaking out. Increase your intake by a certain amount then observer again for a couple of days if you are not breaking out.
- Repeat the above step until you reach the optimum amount of how much you should consume the food you have chosen.
- Just repeat the above steps to all the other foods you plan on introducing to your diet. But keep in mind to do it one by one. This is to pinpoint the "problem food". Take note that it is a fact that even if a fruit, vegetable, meat or all those foods out there are declared good for your health, remember and never forget that your body will still have a different reaction to it and so watch out for your own health as you know your body the most.
But what if even if you are already on the no water part of the regimen for a 3 weeks or a month and your skin simply keeps breaking out. Then it must be because something in your diet causes the breakouts. Simply try to eliminate one by one the foods that is in your diet. If you are convinced that it is not the one that you eliminated is the cause of your breaking out then return it to your diet. Do this until you eliminate the "problem food".
Remember that it is for that diet enhancement is for the repair system of your skin and not to a cure to acne alone.
Am on day 10 now, been clear all along. But i got loads and loads of clogged pores, dried up sebum "needles" are sticking out of each pore on and around my nose, chin area too. It rly looks disgusting, After rincing it with water it fades a bit, but it wont go away.
I think this is part of the recovery, but jezus, it looks so disgusting. It isnt noticable when u r 5m away, but come any closer and its a nightmare;p.
Am on day 10
I use water once every 2-3 days, i do not use my hands, just let water run down my face for 5-10s.
Good sides:
- My skin hasnt felt this good in years. I dont feel my face anymore, its not irritated or dry anymore.
- scars are gone wth?... I thought i had to do some laser operation when i got clear, but they are almost gone and continue to fade. All that just in 10 days!
- no pimples
- an occasional whitehead, but they are very very small, dissapear within a day. No more of those big, hey look at me, whiteheads.
- red marks heal fast.
bad:
- every pore is clogged, dried up sebum stick out of every pore around my t-zone.
- see above, it is just disgusting, and u can see it really well within 2m:)
