I've read about this but didn't do it. The other day a friend of mine brought one in for me and I thought it was pretty tasty. I've made a few since. Here's what I like in them:
1-2 handfulls of kale
1-2 handfulls of spinach
1 stalk of celery
half an avocado
half a pear
1-2 clementines
a few grapes
a few strawberry
half a banana
1/2 cup of water
some ice cubes (to make it cold if you like that)
I switch out the fruits, I don't use all of those in one smoothie. I'm going back to the store today and I'm going to pick up some different greens.
I also eat veggie sandwiches for lunch almost everyday:
gluten free bread with various nuts
hummus
mustard
romaine lettuce
alfalfa sprouts
tomato
cucumber
cheese
good stuff.
I remembered this thread when i was bored last night, so i decided to give it a go. Looking back i think i should have actually read the post as i think i did it WAYYYY wrong! I found some frozen carrots and peppers in the freezer so withdrew them from it.
I got a bug plastic cup that came with the hand blender and poured in loads of carrots and peppers then threw in an orange and a plum LOL! Needless to say it was as thick as cement however rather tasty!
I came back here aterwards (logic much) and discovered you needed leafy green vegetables and to add water
Im still tasting it...
MackabeeNutz,
Wow! So cool that you're seeing such fast improvements! Yea! Juicing is one of the very best things you can do for your health. It's great to keep it up if you can, but if not, remember that blending is very good as well, and actually, should be done in addition to juicing as well, as with blending, you get all the fiber too. Consider juicing some greens along with the carrots, apples and beets, working your way up to half green juice/half carrot (or apple/beets) - the others are so sweet, that the flavor from the greens will be masked. Greens are our most nutrient dense foods.
pun intended,
Frozen veggies are flash cooked (or something like that....) before frozen. I have read studies that they often have "more" nutrition than fresh veggies, due to being frozen at their peak ripeness. However, because they are quickly brought to a high temp before being frozen, I don't consider them a raw green. I do keep frozen greens around for when I run out of fresh before making it to the grocery, but on a daily basis, I opt for the fresh, raw greens to use in my smoothies. I advise giving the raw greens a try and see if you get better improvements. If so, please let us know, as I would be very interested in hearing, and I think others here would too!
homelessdan,
Those are some great ideas, and everything you suggest sounds really tasty!! I haven't made hummus in quite a while.... thanks for the reminder. Some avocado would be tasty in those sandwiches too, along with a nut based, homemade dressing!!
MJ.23,
Your post cracked me up!! haha Nothing wrong with being spontaneous and giving something a whirl, but I'm glad you came back and re-visited. The more smoothies you make, the better they will get, and you can always laugh about your first non-green, cement-like green smoothie. hehehhe I made some really interesting ones in the beginning too.... mostly remembering making one with a bunch of non de-stemmed kale..... let's just say it wasn't lacking in fiber. LOL
I've been drinking smoothies for over three weeks now. I don't use fruits or berries anymore. I like to eat fruits on them own. The smoothies are not very tasty, but nothing unbearable.
I've noticed that my eyesight has gotten better and I've got a smoother skin. As far as acne goes I had a breakout around my mouth and chin. Whiteheads only, but still a breakout. It's probably some other factor like sleep (I'm experimenting with that right now).
My skin has seemed to improve since going back to raw greens, but I'm not sure if it's because of that or because I stopped binging on peanut butter. It does make sense though, because my skin was better when I first started these smoothies with raw greens instead of using frozen greens when I was breaking out.
I need a better blender. Would love to try out the blendtech Total Blender. That thing is insane, it blends pretty much everything. But it has a hefty price tag of $400...
LOL, it sure will!! They recently blended an ipad: http://www.youtube.com/user/blendtec?blend=1&ob=4 They have some seriously funny videos! haha
how do you feel about carrot juice? cause in the mid range of glycemic response.
The people at Hallelujah Acres seem to think it's okay. They did a study on the glycemic index: http://www.hacres.com/pdf/documents/resear...-juice-full.pdf Personally, I don't feel too great about drinking solid carrot juice - I would want some greens blended in for sure - about half greens/half carrot.
I was reading something today and it said we shouldn't combine starchy veggies like carrots, broccoli etc with leafy greens. Not sure about pure carrot juice.
You can blend leafy greens with whatever you want. It is true that some have difficulty digesting starchy veggies with say, fruit, but if you don't have an issue with digesting these, then don't worry about it. 🙂
I made a green smoothie a few days ago for the first time and couldn't drink it, something was just off about it. I decided again today to try it out and added some Stevia and ginger this time and it is soooo much better.
The key here for me is GINGER!!
I used a Pink Lady apple, raspberries and green leaf lettuce with a few drops of Stevia and a small piece of Ginger. Amazing!
Thanks for the idea....

Isn't ginger kinda strong like garlic? I remember when I tried to eat it raw...
By the way, frozen berries are like candy!
It is really strong, so you only need to add a tiny chunk! Sooo delicious, you should try it!
I used frozen raspberries but such a small amount, for colour/slight flavour. I can handle the natural sugar content since I pretty much resist sugar allll the time and use Stevia for everything that needs a kick of sweetness.
I think I'm going to try coconut next...or coconut water to see how that tastes!
I know your not sipposed to brush your teeth after eating fruit so im just wondering when is it okay to brush your teeth after having a smoothie? And also i know usually people say smoothies are bad for the teeth when only fruit is used, but wont green smoothies actually be pretty good for your teeth?

Not supposed to brush your teeth after eating fruit??? There was a thread here discussing how bad fruit is to teeth, so brushing is probably a good thing after eating fruit.
Btw, has anyone tried adding protein powder to their smoothies? Would it be a good idea?

Doesnt that damage the tooth enamel or something when brushing straight after? Think its better to rinse your mouth with water after eating things like fruit.
I just came up with a random recipe after browsing this thread
Handful assorted greens(lettuce, spinach etc)
Half Carrot
Half Cucumber
Half peeled lemon
Handful frozen strawberries
4-6 ice cubes
Water
Your choice for sweetener but I used a little organic sugar since I don't have anything better atm.
Hey guys!
This sounds interesting and sooo yummy, especially now thats its spring. The thread is verryyy long so can someone please tell new people to this thread if others have actually seen results in clearing their acne and what recipe seems to work the most? Does it work for red marks or just preventing new acne? A good summation of all the pages at this point would be needed and greatly appreciated!
UVSoaked,
I don't worry with a sugar rush, because the greens help to counteract the sugars. However, if you are concerned, I don't see that eating protein first would be a problem. You could even add some nuts/seeds to your smoothies if you wanted.
Paul25,
I just swish my mouth with water, and I just got a glowing report on my teeth from my dentist. I brush in the morning and evening, so I never brush right after drinking a smoothie.
hesitation,
I don't recommend protein powders, as they're not real food. Beans, nuts and seeds are all great sources of protein.
quantumtheory,
Thanks for sharing your recipe! Sounds tasty.
Lisa14,
There have definitely been a lot of people who have commented that the smoothies have worked for them. The first post has helpful tips, like recipes, tips for starting, which greens are the most helpful - the cruciferous greens, etc. Several have commented that their red marks go away more quickly, but I didn't find this true for myself. I think the main thing is that they help prevent new blemishes from forming. This isn't a complicated thing, and you don't need to read all the posts, as the key information is all the in first post. Just give them a try, and I hope it works out for you!
Dont Watch Me,
Do a google search for best blender - you will find reviews of some inexpensive brands. People do just fine with the less expensive blenders.

I agree with you on the protein shake! I am going to stop drinking whey protein isolate after this one. I am going to consider brown rice protein, or hemp protein.
I think there's more. I have to look.
