Yeah, it's too much. I am deciding to add 2 handful of spinach because I want to drink this thing twice a day. 😛

I'm gonna start adding frozen fruits and veggies to my smoothies. What berries are a good choice? I bought blueberries and blackcurrants. I'm not so sure about frozen veggies like spinach. It's a good thing you don't have to wash it, but I think it has to melt before using? That can take a while.

dykim90,

That sounds really tasty! :)

hesitation,

I blend frozen spinach while it's still frozen, and it works great. Whatever berries you like will be fine in your smoothie - raspberries and strawberries taste really good as well. :)

I started using tons of frozen stuff as well. Like spinach, berries and broccoli. They are perfect but my smoothies are super cold. Do you do anything about that?

Anyone add spirulina to their smoothies? I have been getting a spirulina green smoothie at a cafe and it is aweeesommeee. I don't think theirs contains any greens - I think its just fruit (mostly bananas) and the spirulina that turns it green. I'm gonna write down whats in it today, then buy the ingredients PLUS add some greens to mine to make a super delicious leafy green spirulina smoothie!

Well I hope its super delicious anyways... ;)

Isn't all of this a lot of sugar?

I used to make smoothies a few years ago until I realize it made the back of my neck break out like CRAZY. As soon as I stopped I would never get pimples on my neck (except sometimes one near the hairline, but that has always happened).

I never allowed myself to make this stuff since.

hesitation,

You can blend a little longer, which will create heat, or you can blend with some warm water. I don't like super cold smoothies either!! haha

tree23,

That sounds like a fun idea! Let us know how it goes! :)

Chocobot,

The greens really help to cancel out all the sugar, especially if using low sugar fruits or making mostly veggies smoothies. You may have just had an initial detox reaction and might consider trying them again. Or, you could have been allergic to something in the smoothies, in which case, you could experiment by making smoothies with just 2 ingredients - a green and a fruit, and see what types of reactions you get. In any case, sorry you had such a bad reaction!

Warm water is an excellent idea! I tried blending it a little longer but my blender started to smoke and it smelled like it was about to explode. Will probably need a stronger one.

bleh... so I tried making a spirulina smoothie like I mentioned this morning. I forgot to look at the cafe menu thing to see what the really good one I've been drinking has in it, so I had to wing it:

1 small banana

5 strawberries

1/3 of a very small apple

a few pieces of kale

a few spinach leaves

----->together, the kale and spinach probably equaled 1 handful

a tiny bit of apple juice (less than 1/4 cup)

and a teaspoon of spirulina powder

RESULTS: I just taste banana! hahah. This is NOTHING like the one at the cafe :( I will try this again very soon, maybe even later tonight, and add some frozen berries. I have a bag of mixed berries and a bag of blackberries..those should do the trick.

I do have to say the consistency and color are very appealing. The smoothies I used to make (before spirulina) had a mixture of colors - light bananas and apples, greens, red and purple and blue berries, and they always ended up this really gross looking brown. With the addition of spirulina, it is solid pretty green. It completely covered up the strawberries red. I didn't use a whole lot of strawberries since I'm afraid of creating a nasty brown color, but this went so well that I won't be afraid to add more bright colors next time around.

out!

I made this smoothie again with the addition of blueberries and blackberries. Flavor improved, but it became a purpleish smoothie instead of a green smoothie!

To everyone who uses frozen berries in their smoothies - -what color do your smoothies end up? I cannot make a smoothie with greens AND berries without it turning an unappealing brownish color. My above smoothie was more of a purplish brown which I can handle, but.. very far from green!

Mine never ends up green either when I use berries. I don't think it matters, it's still a green smoothie.

Tree23,

Using berries can definitely give a purple tint - no worries. :) I've even made green smoothies before that were light pink! Those smoothies had small handfuls of spinach and usually pineapple, mango, banana and raspberries/strawberries. It's a great way to give someone a green smoothie without them knowing it. hehe :)

I'm not sure if these smoothies are working for me :( I've been drinking them for a while now and at the beginning it seemed to be getting better but then I started putting yogurt in them and my acne got worse so I cut out dairy in my diet but now I can't even tell if my acne is the same as before I started or worse.

You said it seemed to be getting better, but then you started adding yogurt into your smoothie and your acne for worse? Well, you obviously got worse because of dairy. So keep drinking green smoothie with out the yogurt!

Yeah my acne got worse, so I stopped putting yogurt in my smoothies and stopped eating dairy.

^ Hang in there! It very well could have been the dairy. You might also try upping your greens, and be sure you're using cruciferous greens like spinach, kale and collards. Make sure you're not using too much fruit. Hope things improve for you soon. :)

I feel kind of stupid because i suffered with pretty bad acne for about a year,

then I sucked it up and started having a cup of beet-carrot-apple juice every day and some raw cucumbers, Im 80 percent clear and its been only about 2 weeks and wow people treat me differently....

*shakes head* it was so easy ...

Do you think frozen greens make any difference? I suppose maybe if they're putting something to preserve the color of the veggies? When I started these smoothies I was using fresh greens and my face was looking tons better, then the yogurt breakouts happened and then I started using frozen greens but my face doesn't look as clear as it did when I used fresh greens.

I'm not a big fan of kale, but I do like spinach and collard greens in my smoothies.

I'm also wondering if frozen veggies are as good as fresh ones. I usually use half of the 14 oz frozen spinach package and tons of frozen broccoli.

Freezing lowers enzyme activity slightly in vegetables and fruits but honestly, enzymes will degrade whether they are left in your fridge or freezer. 'Fresh' vegetables from supermarkets and then stored in your fridge for a few days are no where near as nutrient/enzyme rich as fresh ones picked from a garden. If freezing is easier for you, then you should do that.. after all, none of us like opening our vegetable crisper and finding that items have gone off.

In saying that, its probably better to prepare and freeze your own fruits and veg because you dont know what has been done to store bought frozen vegetables, perhaps they have been processed or had preservatives added for longer shelf life. I suppose the only exception is if you live in a cold country and want tropical fruits. But yea, if you want top quality product that hasnt been degraded nutritionally through too much handling but still want to be able to increase its shelf life, I suppose buying fresh produce at a farmers market and then freezing it could be a good option. Plus you'd end up with a yummy slushy ice cold smoothie, mmmmm yum :).
