AdamDolce10,

That recipe is fine, but since you're just starting out, I'd only use one small handful of greens. You can work your way up from there. There are also recipes posted on the first page. Good luck! :)

Thanks :)

I was also wondering as a sweetener could I use organic agave syrup

Or is that too high fructose

Because I bought this organic almond milk with agave syrup and corn maltodextrin is this a problem

Its only 5g sugars per 100ml

^ There is controversy about agave being too much like high fructose corn syrup, which means it's definitely not a good choice. However, since you already have it, I'd go ahead and use it. You might want to try a little stevia in your smoothies - or, even a little honey. However, if you use really sweet fruits like pineapple, bananas and mango, you should find that you don't need to add a sweetener. :)

I dont add sweeteners to my smoothies cause i think they're gorgeous anyway :)

I can't buy unsweetened almond milk here in Ireland :(

I was just wondering about the milk and agave and thanks for the help :)

What exactly is corn maltodextrin exactly?

^ I'm not sure about the corn maltodextrin - I try to eat as few processed foods as possible, so this isn't an ingredient I'm very familiar with. If you're concerned about the almond milk, you could always make several batches yourself, freeze, and defrost when you're ready for them. Here's a link that shows how to do it: http://www.living-foods.com/recipes/almondmilk.html . I used to use almond and soy milks on a regular basis, but now, to make things creamy, I just blend water with nuts like almonds, cashews, etc. :)

I'm going to make one tonight. I love the idea of getting greens into my body without having to taste them.

I'm so happy I might implode! I just drank spinach and couldn't taste it! :D I had an apple, some strawberrys, cinnamon, and LOTS of spinach...and it tasted like nothing! So that's what I'm going to have for breakfast from now on. :boogie:

Paul,

Fruit sorbets are wonderful. A little orange juice concentrate, water, and your favorite frozen fruits. Instead of the orange concentrate (or just orange juice), you could also use a little soy or almond milk. Throwing raspberries in always gives great flavor. Frozen bananas are great for getting that "creamy" flavor, and they have a wonderfully creamy texture when blended. Check out this recipe: http://www.leangreenmama.com/2009/luscious...awberry-sorbet/ .

Sorry if this has already been addressed on this thread, (I only read about 5-6 pages of the 88 O_O ) but does anybody have a good recommendation on blenders? I've never owned one before, so it would be primarily to try these smoothies for myself! Thanks

Whatever price range you're in, I'd say look for whatever has the highest horsepower/watts. The faster the blades spin, the better. Later down the road, I highly recommend a Vita-Mix! I love mine!! :)

I have this one and it works very well. I still have to jam all the ingredients around, but this thing rocks compared to the cheaper on e I had before and returned. Sams club has it for I think $50.00, I'm not a member, but I was able to shoulder tap a lady inside the store to buy it for me lol.

Blendtec is a great blender too; IMO better than Vita-Mix (sorry ABGfairy :P) with about the same cost. Check out their youtube videos to see just how powerful the blender is; type in "will it blend" and they should come up. I know the Green Smoothie Girl also recommends Blendtec over Vita-Mix for a few reasons as well. See one of her posts here and a good summary here. I bought a Blendtec and have no regrets or complaints so far :).

Which one was it again? 🙂

Oh, I've seen those "will it blend" videos before, and they crack me up!!!!!!!!! Freaking hilarious!!!! hahahahaha 😆 Whoever came up with that idea is awesome. haahah I know a lot of people love the Blendtec as well. It's definitely the other favorite. I think they're equally as good, as far as blending, but I favor the Vita-Mix because of the tamper, which I use all the time when I'm blending "thick" dressings, sorbets, etc., that have to be pushed down into the blades. Green Smoothie Girl says she likes how the Blendtec does different speeds automatically, but I can do that manually with the Vita-Mix, which I prefer to do anyway. Both great machines though!! 🙂

I've been making new smoothies every morning now that summer has come. I've tried lots of different recipes, some better than others (the first one I made- yuck!!! :X ) But I think the key to making a good smoothie is picking fruits that work well together. Like berries put together, apples and pears, bananas and strawberries, etc. The first one I made had spinach, an apple, banana, and mango- nasty! It turned brown after a few seconds.. very gross.

This is my favorite smoothie so far, I'd say it's my 7th green smoothie recipe I've came up with. It's really good :)

Berry Green Smoothie

3 ice cubes

1 cup pulp-free orange juice

1 serving of strawberry yogurt* (any kind will do)

7 frozen strawberries (whole)

1/3 cup frozen raspberries

1/3 cup frozen blackberries

1/3 cup frozen blueberries

1 handful of baby spinach

* This ingredient is optional. I use it for a kick of sweetness, instead of using sugar substitute or anything else. Dairy is known to break out for some (luckily not for me) so this ingredient doesn't have to be added. Feel free to substitute this ingredient for something else :)

It's delicious! And whats great about this smoothie is that it doesn't turn green! You can also substitute frozen fruit for fresh. I just find it easier and less expensive to buy frozen fruit from Trader Joe's, they have a great selection which I might add. I have a glass of this each morning for breakfast along with some plain toast and butter.

Lemonz,

Glad you've found recipes you like! :) It's definitely a matter of experimenting. For me, oranges and berries aren't sweet enough to mask the greens, so I'd want at least one sweet fruit thrown in, but the yogurt is probably key in your recipe, and I avoid dairy for health reasons. I don't use a big combination of fruit like in your first one that turned brown... usually just one fruit with maybe another type of frozen fruit or berries thrown in.... maybe that's why in the three years I've been making smoothies, I've never had one turn brown on me that I remember? I do remember that happening to one or two other posters though. haha I'm sure we all have a few "disaster smoothie" stories would could share!! I know I do! I love using frozen fruit as well - definitely adds a kick! Also, be sure to use a variety of fruits and greens!! :)

I just made a simple, delicious smoothie:

  • 1/2 cup frozen spinach (the spinach is cooked down, so less is needed)
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tbs cocoa powder
  • 1 tbs honey
  • 1 large spoonful natural peanut butter
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Agreed; definitely a step-up from your average blenders:P. I think either one would be great; what set the blendtec on top for me was its versatility and all the pre-programmed cycles it had.
