Just did my first smoothie. All I can say is FAIL. lol...Here's what it consisted of:
- two handfuls of brokoli
- 3 big strawberries
- half of avocado
- 10-20 hazelnuts and sun flower seeds
- some onion (bad idea) :eh:
- 1 lemon
It's pretty disgusting but I drank the damn thing anyway. I would definitely not be able to drink that for 2 months. I didn't really look at the recipes, I just took what I had in the fridge. Any advice?
yea, i have been doing this green smoothie thing and eating better for the past 3 weeks and have seen little to no results. There is a somewhat reduction in whiteheads around my beard area which is my main problem area but that is about it.
so like andersoj asked, how much longer should this take to see results?? I mean i don't have a problem doing it because it is healthy but the cost is taking its toll. It cost me around an extra 40-50$ in groceries a week to do this healthy food and green smoothie regimen.
I really hope i see results cause this is the most expensive regimen i have ever done.
I've started drinking these again for the past month and a half.
I stopped at the end of summer (I don't know why) and I was so stressed out because my skin got pretty bad again, but now my skin looks the best it ever has in a long time!
I breakout here or there, but it's def. not that bad! I love these smoothies!
andersoj,
You should allow at least 6 weeks before expecting to see results... you're almost half way there.
RatsOff,
$40-50 a week?! Have you been buying gold leaf maybe? haha You should be able to do the smoothies for about $10 a week. Wish I had kept my receipt last week at the grocery so I could have told you my total cost for smoothies, but I went through a 1 pound bag of collard greens, 1 bunch of parsley, a couple apples, and a bunch of bananas, which are really cheap.... pretty simple and not very costly at all.
Oh, and see my post above to andersoj!
strato,
I'm really happy to hear you made a successful smoothie!! I agree about the combo of parsley, apple and lemon being SO refreshing!!
shavingwoes,
Your pudding sounds really good! Thanks for sharing your recipe with us!!
True Blood,
Thank you so much for your positive green smoothie post! I think a little extra encouragement was needed right about now, and I'm so glad you're finding the smoothies to be so helpful.

I spend about 200$+ a week. But it's worth it because I'm acnefree. I usually buy high protein food and carbohydrate.
Been doing smoothies for 2 weeks and my face is breaking out alot compare to the last few months. My throat and lips are always dry, anyone experienced this before? What should I do?
What exactly have you been putting in them? You may want to either slow down with them or cut them out if symptoms are severe.
pennyjai1,
I agree with shavingwoes. Please tell us what you're putting in your smoothies, and maybe just start out with one small handful of greens a day. Some people do break out more in the beginning due to detox, but this should pass in a couple of weeks. Or, it might be that you're allergic to a particular ingredient you're using in your smoothies? Are you using any citrus fruits? Citrus can be an acne contributor for some.
As for your skin being dry, are you getting enough good oils like fish oil and eating foods like avocados, nuts and seeds? Getting enough water?
Hang in there. I'm sure things will soon get better.
andersoj,
Absolutely! There's always hope!
holy crap! joel fuhrman fans!! i love, love him. i've been following his tips for approximately 4 years now. i am really happy that i found this post!
reading eat to live seriously changed my life permanently. i've given this book to people, some have read it, others have not. my overall health improved so much.
i will say though that my skin problems never did improve. my acne is not hereditary (no one in my family has skin problems), nor diet related. i exercise 5 days/ week (4 yoga classes weekly, 1 pilates, plus running/ elliptical/ weights). i think it may be hormonal (not sure about this b/c bcp never helped and pregnancy and breastfeeding worsened the situation) or a latent condition which i haven't uncovered yet. i did experience trauma during childhood (serious trauma, not an "unsatisfying family life") which may have upset hormonal balance or something.
my new derm wants me to start accutane, but i'm really at odds with this choice. i've worked really hard to eliminate toxins from my family's life and this would really just blow everything. however, i'm tired of experimenting with everything, wasting time and money. the condition of my skin is good, just acne ridden, if that makes any sense.
any input? feel free to message me.. thanks for reading!
Thx guys for helping me out, I used orange one or twice i guess. Most of the time I use either green apples, pears, strawberries, banana and kiwi for fruits, as for the greens, mostly i use spinach, romaine lettuce, parsley and arugula. I am not using that much citrus fruits, maybe I should drink more water and eat healthier and fight it out for another month to see results!
musicmama,
Wooohoo!!!! Another Dr. Fuhrman fan!
Hmm.... well, I listed his tips for acne on the main post, so I'm sure you saw those.... to stay away from too many nuts/seeds, too much fruit, dried fruit, etc. My biggest suggestion would be to do lots of "blended" and "juiced" cruciferous greens and veggies. Both the green smoothies and the veggie soups are great for this. I have super easy recipes I can share with you for the smoothies and veggie soups. Feel free to send me a message!
Are you getting a daily serving each day of both raw and cooked/steamed greens, as Dr. Fuhrman suggests? Doing any vegetable juice? Are you taking his acidophilus, the vitamin D, and the DHA oil (all of which help with acne)?
Another thought might be that you have a food allergy? Some find that citrus aggravates their acne, and soy seems to be a contributor as well. What foods make up the bulk of your diet? Hope we can figure this out!! So glad you stopped by!!
pennyjai1,
Glad to help! Yes, I think maybe you should cut out the citrus fruits for now, just in case. Once you see improvement, you can add them back in and see how you do. Otherwise, I think your plan of drinking more water and continuing with the smoothies is a good one. Hope you see results really soon!! Let us know how it goes!
pennyjai1, you might also want to try cutting out spinach for a while too and see if that helps at all. It's not widely known, but spinach allergy is relatively common; I haven't tested it lately but in the past I've had reactions to spinach (red dots on my hands, skin rashes) so I use collard greens, kale, dandelion (when I can get it), and swiss chard mostly in my smoothies. Parsley & coriander are also good options; haven't tried coriander (aka cilantro) yet but parsley gave a great result, bit of a hassle to remove the leaves from the stems though.
Also, anyone use mustard greens in their green smoothies? I'm shocked at how pungent they are.. even in a larger green smoothie, just a couple leaves made it pretty peppery; I used 2 bananas, 1/2 cup blueberries, 1 ripe mango, 1/2 cup whole goat's milk yogurt, and 2 mustard green leaves and it had a pretty spicy tone to it -not the best tasting green smoothie but my skin/body liked it . I've mixed in whole bunches of kale or collard greens before and smoothies still came out tasting relatively sweet, it's interesting how some greens can be so much more potent than others.
shavingwoes,
Good tips! I think I've heard that as well about spinach - thanks for bringing that up! As for parsley, I don't remove the leaves from the stems, but I do remove that bottom half of the stems (the part without any leaves). Parsley is super fast for me. I rinse the leaves, and then I grab the top section with the leaves, grab the bottom section without the leaves, twist and break them apart, and throw the top part in the blender.
I know what you mean about mustard greens!!! hahah I actually haven't done much in the way of making them taste good. Sometimes I buy a 1 pound bag of them. I think I've mostly blended them up with bananas... not the best, but as long as it's not too fibrous (I just can't stomach drinking that), I can drink just about any type of smoothie! haha I'm guessing the mustard greens would taste good though blended up with apples/pears, some parsley, and a little lemon juice?
Bump because this thread doesn't belong on the fourth page. This should be stickied, but I'm glad it isn't, the stickied threads always lack discussion.
I've been making smoothies now that summer has come.
My favorite is
1-2 banana (depending on size)
few ice cubes
1 handful of frozen mixed berries (blue/black/rasp [i generally don't like using rasp / black because of the seeds, but it's all I have in my freezer )
LOTS of cinnamon
1 handful of baby spinach
a scoop of plain yogurt
a little water
My goal is to implement green tea into my smoothies. I'd imagine you brew the tea cool it and use it instead of water? I'll have to mess around with it.
I need to go to the grocery store and get some green variety.
I went to Whole Foods today to buy more veggies and fruit for my smoothies!
My skin is looking great! I am so glad I found this thread more than a year ago.
A couple weeks ago I went a week without drinking these (didn't have time to get veggies) and I had a small breakout. So I know these smoothies keep my skin clear.
Rob,
Thanks for bumping the thread! I agree that it should probably be stickied - I'd hate for anyone to miss it that might be helped by it, but like you say, sometimes those threads get overlooked anyway.
Thanks for sharing your smoothie recipe - sounds great! With the green tea, I've never made a smoothie with it, but I also would think you'd replace the water with it. Bet it'd be really good with a banana or mango, a little honey, and a little spinach!
True Blood,
Thank you for another encouraging post about how the smoothies have helped your skin! So happy that they've been helping you for over a year now!
