EddieE,

Give the kale and collards a try! Just de-stem them first so it's not so fibrous. I had a bunch of greens and bananas starting to go bad, so I practically filled up my entire vita-mix with spinach and spring mix all the way to the top!!! I then put in two bananas, about a tablespoon of honey, 2 tbs of cocoa powder and about three cups of water. There were a LOT of greens in my smoothie, but it tasted just like chocolate milk! Seriously!! The bananas really give a creamy flavor.

Do you have time to blend extra smoothie in the morning so you could just grab it out of the fridge at night?

Are you doing other fruits besides bananas?

Hmm, I'm totally gonna try this!

I loooove smoothies since it's the quickest and tastiest way to get my fruits in for the day, but I never thought of throwing some greens in there as well. The green color won't bother me at all since I always drink green tea smoothies and those things are GREEN, lol.

I like veggies alot, but I admit I don't eat nearly enough of them.

I work two jobs and I'm a full time student so I mostly eat utter crap or nothing at all every day, depending on how busy and stressed I am. >_< Lol, no wonder my skin sucks, right?

Since I'm already a smoothie expert, I recommend using stevia extract to sweeten your smoothies. It's an all-natural, calorie free sweetener and it's actually beneficial to your body (can improve insulin sensitivity and ease hypertension). It's the only artificial sweetener I can use that has no effect on my acne. The brand of stevia I use also has a fiber supplement added to it. All in all, it's some good stuff.

*`*~ABG Fairy~*`*,

Thanks to you and everyone else for all the great suggestions! I'm going to give this a try. I've had acne for about seven years and just the other day I really began to notice that I have a lot of pink scares on my face. (The've been there for a while, but that's when I started to get frustrated with them.) I hope this will help.

I've had carrot juice before, but I didn't like it. I've tried adding apples, and that seems to make it taste a little better. I haven't been consistent about it at all, though. I'm going to try it with the lettuce and berries.

By the way, I saw a lot of people commenting on a more quiet blender. I have a Juiceman Blender. Mine is VERY loud (its an old model), but they make different brands now that are as quiet as a hum.

One question, I heard that turmeric (I have turmeric powder.) helps to heal scarring. Has anyone else heard this, and do you think I should try it in the smoothie?

So happy you're excited about the smoothies! :) You're right - they're a really fast and easy way to get in some fruits and veggies! Another really easy thing to do is to steam frozen veggies and top with nut butters/sauces and seasonings. Blended veggie soups are also quick and easy to make, and you can re-heat them throughout the weak. I eat lots of cabbage throughout the week too with a dressing that takes less than 5 minutes to make and lasts about 4 days. (I posted the recipe below). I can send you recipes of these if you'd like!

Thanks for the stevia tip! For some reason I don't like stevia in my smoothies (strangely enough, I love it in tea, but I don't like it mixed with food! haha), but a lot of people seem to like it with their smoothies, so I think I'll add it to the first post. :)

EddieE,

Sometimes it's hard to experiment with a new recipe because of the risk that it might taste bad! haha If/when that happens to a smoothie, I just add more water so that I can drink it down really fast without really haven't to taste it. hahahaha Don't forget about the recipes on the first post. They can help with new ideas. :)

Rudy200,

You're very welcome, and thanks for posting! :)

I think it's fine to add turmeric - it eat turmeric all the time. I make a cabbage dressing that I use weekly, and it's sooooo good. It lasts for 4 days, so I just grab some pre-shredded cabbage and top it with the dressing. I'll post the recipe below for anyone interested.

I hope the smoothies give you the results you're hoping for! :)

Turmeric Dressing

1 cup sunflower seeds

1/4 cup cashews (optional)

1/2 cup lemon or lime juice

1/2 cup water

3 large garlic cloves

1 1/2 teaspoons turmeric

* Blend

Thanks for the recipe. I'll have to give the turmeric a go. I think it's much easier to drink the vegetables and nutrients than it is to eat them raw -- even if it doesn't taste all that great in drink form. I made one yesterday, but I added more fruit than vegetables so that it would drown out the "bad" taste. (Mine was juice, though, and not a smoothie -- I made it in one of those blenders that just blends the juice straight from the vegetable.)

This topic is inspiring! 🙂

Rudy200,

Glad you are feeling inspired! :)

You're right, it's a LOT easier to just drink down the veggies!! haha If I'm making a mostly veggie smoothie, adding at least half an apple or pear and a lemon makes it taste great!

Hi! Im not sure if this question has been asked before, sorry if it has, but if I make 2 servings of smoothie in the morning will it lose its vitamin content by later in the day? Its become a bit of a pain making 2 smoothies a day.=)

RebeccaDeWinter,

It's totally fine to store your smoothie in the fridge for up to 48 hrs. It will lose some vitamin content but not enough to be concerned about. I used to do what you're doing as well (actually, I used to make enough smoothie for 2 days), and they still kept my skin clear. :)

EddieE,

It's fine to add frozen berries to spinach. :)

If you want to do only spinach, that's fine as well, but I'd try to get some other greens in at some point too like spring mix, kale, collards, parsley, etc. At least throw in half an apple!! haha

If you're wanting to only use low-sugar fruits with your smoothies, then I'd suggest green apples, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, peaches, papaya, apricots... you can see a list of low-sugar fruits here: http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whattoeat/a/whatfruit.htm :)

Tanejunkie,

You are very, very welcome!!! It always makes me so happy when I learn of people's success stories with the smoothies, so thank you so much for posting!! Enjoy your smoothies! :)

Veen,

I haven't tried cabbage in my smoothies, but I eat cabbage raw all the time. I shred it up in my blender, and then I usually top it with the dressing below. :)

Turmeric Dressing

1 cup sunflower seeds

1/4 cup cashews (optional)

1/2 cup lemon or lime juice

1/2 cup water

3 large garlic cloves

1 1/2 teaspoons turmeric

* Blend

Do you know of any foods i could put in my smoothie that promotes shedding dead skin cells? I remember reading about foods that helped with this so that you dont have to keep exfoliating but cant remember what they are.

Paul25,

I wish I had an answer for you, but I don't know about this. I know you're looking to not have to keep exfoliating, but Paula Begoun has a very well formulated 2% BHA though that I would recommend. I use it, and it's not drying to your skin. If you go here, you can buy a small sample size: http://www.paulaschoice.com/product/two-pe...-aha-exfoliants . :)

EddieE,

Well, I'm not a fan of isolated protein powders, so I can't comment on that. You could try adding nuts/seeds to your smoothie. Are you still making eggs? I'd recommend just eating an egg if you're looking for some extra protein. Regardless, if you're taking in enough calories from plant-foods, you'll automatically get enough protein, as plant foods contain protein. Some people don't digest plant proteins as well as others and need to supplement with some animal protein - in that case, eggs or turkey are great options. :)

This might have been asked, but I cant really read 75 pages pf responses:

I've been making these but not really following the recipes exactly. I just throw in some greens, some fruit, and some water and drink it. The problem is I going through a lot of leafy greens and it's turning quite expensive. A typical bag of pre-washed leafy greens which usually weigh around 8oz make around about 1.5-2 typical mug sizes. So I tend to go through a bag every day or every two days.

About how many smoothies do you typically end up making out of one of those bags, how many handfuls would you say one of those bags has? Is a handful end up being like a cup of blended leafy greens or what? I wanna get enough leafy greens but it seems that I'm going through them like crazy and on a student budget leafy greens are not exactly cheap.

Now why wouldn't you want to read through 75 pages? hehehe

Unless your acne is severe, you can get by with a bag lasting at least 4-5 days. If your acne is mild/moderate, just one handful a day should be enough to keep your skin under control. Also, bagged lettuce is more expensive, so you might consider the alternative. Also, if you have a Costco nearby, they have really great prices on greens. If you have a yard, you might also consider growing your own greens, organically of course, if time permits. I plan on doing this soon myself. :)

I am in the gym.

I stopped eating eggs cause of cholesterol but i drink EGg whites 100% liquid.

is Cholesterol free, and healthy.

and i can't find turkey that has no sugars added... ;( they sell turkey here with sugars added..

gotta look if theres more.

What about red meats... lol or chicken

The whey protein i buy is really good , seems healthy.

Eddie,

Well, it wouldn't hurt to finish the carton you bought, but I wouldn't buy anymore! I'd focus on eating more beans/lentils (one cup of lentils is 16 grams of protein!!), and nuts/seeds - especially sunflower seeds. I think reading this article will help clear some things up for ya: http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/hurtf...nd-powders.html . :)

Eddie,

You're welcome! :) The Ezekiel foods are great, but I think you'd have to get several servings to equal getting enough lentils everyday - I'd still opt for cooking either lentils or beans, but you said you're going to start cooking beans, so that's great! Remember to do a variety of beans! It's true that too many nuts/seeds can contribute to breakouts, so that's definitely something to continue monitoring. :)
