Paul25,

It's recommending to mix up your greens, but I'll admit to doing mostly spinach lately as well, and all is fine. Just do the best you can - perhaps there's another grocery store you could check out? Having only spinach and kale is a really small selection of greens. Do they not at least also have romaine lettuce?

I got my mum to look around in a bigger supermarket and she looked for collards, bok choy and

swiss chard but couldnt see any of them. I shall look for romaine lettuce next time, what others would you recommend looking for that should be easier to find in shops?

Dyl,

Good luck with the fast!! I'm sure it will help. Regardless of what you decide to "not" eat, just be sure to eat lots of vegetables - especially cruciferous vegetables, and do try to cut down on animal products. Cruciferous veggies and juices will help more than any other food. :)

Paul25,

Whatever leafy greens your store carries, you can blend into smoothies. Romaine, spring mix and spinach are usually easy to find. You can also do greens like parsley and cilantro. :)

tay5,

There have been some people post that their red marks go away faster after doing the smoothies, but not everyone notices this. Good luck with the smoothies!! :)

@ABG Fairy: Thank you for providing details about the Fuhrham Diet!

I'm ready to start with smoothies and have to buy a blender. Can you guys reccomend a good, affordable blender? - Thanks in advance!

Does anyone else find when they make a smoothie with kale, when you leave it in the fridge for a few hours it goes really thick and slimy? It makes it very hard to drink, anyone know why it may do this?

Panda1,

Thanks for the cucumber tip!! I had forgotten what a great source of silica they are! :)

EddieE,

Cool! Hope you like adding an apple! :)

healthy guy,

My pleasure! If you'd like more tips/recipes, send me a PM.

I like a Vita-Mix (what I use) or Blendtec, but they are pricey. Many seem to do just fine though with a standard blender for stores like Target, Walmart, etc. You might also try ebay for better deals on a Vita-Mix or Blendtec. Good luck! :)

Paul25,

Hmm... I haven't left a kale smoothie in the fridge lately, but as long as it's under 48 hrs, they seem to do fine for me. I cover them in the fridge and then stir them when I take them out. :)

I'm trying to stay away from the org atm, i've got heaps of stuff to read through. But I just thought I'd share I tried frozen berries for the first time with a smoothie. OMG - I thought I died and went to heaven.

Green smoothies are the S***!!

At least 5 days a week I use 2 cups of water, half a cucumber, half an avocado, a bit of cream (fat helps absorption), berries now aswell, and then any combination of broccoli (steamed), bok choy, cabbage and spinach. I'm also growing my own kale and collard plants so will soon use that too. By the time you finish blending you've got almost 6 cups of delicious smoothie. 6 CUPS!

Why don't we get it over with and pin this thread already..?

Hello ABG Fairy. Haven't posted in this topic in a while 🙂 Here's a tip for all you juicers out there. I've been drinking cucumber water for the past couple of days (freshly made every morning after I wake up) and it's really been helping my complexion! For all you green smoothie makers out there, throw in a cucumber! It'll add another dimension to an already healthy drink. Careful with regular supermarket cucumbers though because they're most likely waxed and you don't want that. Go for organic unwaxed ones 🙂

I made a thread about this a while ago but the answers were a little vague. How do you tell if a cucumber is waxed?? Like absolutely beyond a shadow of a doubt? I'm buying my cucumbers from a little fruit/veg stand now rather than the supermarket but still cannot for the life of me figure out what the difference between a waxed/unwaxed cucumber is. HELP!

WOW!!! I just started drinking green smoothies about 3 days ago... and oh man I am addicted to them!! SOOO YUMMY!!! You dont even have to put that much fruit in them to make them taste good. I use like a quarter of an apple and a few berries and the rest are greeeennnnsss. This is the smoothie I LOVE:

-A little bit of ice

-kale

-spinach

-parsley (adds a great flavour to it)

-cucumber

-a couple rasberries

-a quarter of an apple... not even....

-a bit of liquid, sometimes water, sometimes a bit of my rice milk.

SOOOOO YUMMYYYYYYYYYYYY

Anyway, just though I would let you guys know I am on the green smoothie bandwagon hahha.

crazychiklet01,

I think doing a green smoothie cleanse for a few days would probably be fine - kinda like a fruit/veggie fast, haha. I don't know much about fasting though, so I'm not a good one to ask. :)

tobias,

Glad you're enjoying your smoothies so much, and it's SO cool that you're growing your own greens!! :)

tdot,

So glad you're on the green smoothie bandwagon with us! haha :) Your smoothie sounds super nutritious! :)

Made my first green smoothie today. Downed it as fast as I could haha, it reminded me of those huge bowls of bitter traditional Chinese medicine (liquid form) that I had to down a few months ago.

Second attempt at green smoothie today. It ended up incredibly delicious!! I used a huge handful of organic spring mix, 2/3rds of a white peach, and a bit of water. Incredible. The peach completely masks the bitterness of the greens, it is awesome.

mountainrunner,

That is so great!! I love using peaches in my smoothies - I usually just buy them frozen. Since you like peaches, you might enjoy this dessert recipe below. :)

Peaches and Cream Cobbler

For the cobbler:

‚‚½ pound bag frozen peaches

‚About ‚¼ cup cashews (for more creaminess, add more)

‚2 teaspoons vanilla extract

‚2 teaspoons cinnamon (or more)

‚Enough soy or almond milk to blend (about ‚½ - 1 cup)

Peaches:

‚‚½ cup fresh peaches, diced (optional)

Blend on high until smooth. If using a Vita-Mix, use the tamper to push the ingredients down to the blades while blending. If you don‚„t have a high powered blender, you may need to use more milk. Top with fresh, diced peaches and sprinkle cinnamon on top.

l3br0n23,

Of course you can! I want to hear back from you soon that you got your blender working and made a smoothie! :)

Thanks for the recipe ABG Fairy! It sounds awesome, I'll remember to try it when I have some cashews in the house!

I've been observant about how my body reacts to different types of food recently, and I've noticed that I generally feel so much better if I have 3-4 pieces of sweet fruit or tomato for a meal, instead of cooked foods. I feel like the more cooked / the more ingredients a dish is, the longer it takes to digest. Also, I've found that I'm fine with almonds and plain oatmeal, while similar foods like peanut butter and bread do not go very well for me.

These observations as well as having read up on raw foodism for the past few months suggest that I will likely gain many benefits from a raw diet. I'm considering it - I'm an athlete and what I eat directly affects my performance as well. I probably won't go all raw but I'll definitely up my fruit/vegetable intake and try to eat 1-2 raw meals a day.

Also, I have a question - you say it is important to include a wide variety of greens in the smoothies - I shop at Costco and they have spring mix, which has a few types of greens, and also spinach. Will these two types provide me with enough nutrients? Thanks.

Im thinking of upping the intake of green smoothies i have a day. Usually i make one in the morning and it usually fills about 2 big cups. Im thinking off making one later on in the day now just to see if adding in even more can help me. My skin is still feeling extremely dry and im not to sure why, i thought drinking smoothies and adding in more fat into my diet would work but hasnt so far. I am going to give it a good amount of time though and not just give up on everything like i usually do haha.

mountainrunner,

No problem! :)

It's great that you're being so observant of how different foods affect your body! Your idea to do a couple raw dishes every day is great as well. That's what I like to do - I try to do a balance between raw and cooked, as I think it's important to do both. Here's an article on that if you're curious: http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/healt...food-diets.html If you're looking for info on healthy eating for athletes, you might find some interesting articles here: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls...art=10&sa=N . These links both come from Disease Proof, Dr. Fuhrman's blog, who I mention in the first post. I think he's the most knowledgeable doctor on the planet! =D

Doing spring mix and spinach should be fine as long as you mix them up, but if you can sometimes fit in other greens like collards, kale, etc, that'd be great too!

Paul25,

Sounds like a good plan as long as you enjoy the smoothies and don't mind drinking that much everyday. An alternative would be to make a veggie soup with blended greens. These are actually really good, and if you PM me, I can send you some recipes. I have a recipe for a creamy tomato soup with blended greens, and it's sooo good. Actually, I'll go ahead and post it below. :) You can make a soup like this and then store it in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Are you getting enough good fats in your diet from nuts, seeds, and avocados? I'm glad you're willing to hang in there and give diet a chance to help. Sometimes it can take a few months.

Creamy Tomato-Spinach Soup

This will make a big pot of soup, so beware!

Blend:

‚1 quart beef broth, low sodium

‚1 pound bag of frozen broccoli

‚1 can refried pinto beans, no salt

‚2 cans tomato sauce, no salt

‚‚¾ cup almonds

‚‚½ cup sesame seeds

‚‚¼ cup raw cashews

‚‚¼ cup dried onions

‚2 garlic cloves

You will need to blend a little at a time and add to a big pot. If mixture gets too thick, add a cup or two of water.

Add:

‚1 pound package frozen, chopped spinach

‚1 can diced tomatoes, no salt

‚‚½ cup green onions, diced

Stir everything together and cook on low heat until warm.

EddieE,

I agree - a simple spinach/banana smoothie can be so great! Sometimes I add peanut butter and cocoa powder as well. :)

jonasj,

I'm glad you stopped by! :) Leafy greens (blad groen) are a group of plants, as you said, and this group does contain spinach. Here is a link with pictures of different leafy greens: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/products/p...eafygreens.html

Also, this is a great website for translating English into Dutch: http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url . You can even ask it to translate an entire web page. For example, here is my smoothie post in Dutch: http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url?d...TrUrl=Translate
