I am trying to get most to all of my vitamins from my foods..specifically the green smoothies, since belnded, they are MORE POTENT..

I have $160.00 as of tommorow...I need to buy a blender...and was conteplating on buying like 100 dollars worth of pure vitamins...however, If I can get most of my vitamins through the GREEN SMOOTHIES..

Then, All I would need to do then is, figure out what is what other vitamins I need..

Like basically saying..

I go and buy a 30 dollar belnder..and 30.00 worth of kale/romaine lettuce, and some blue berries, and cinnamon..

How many vitamins/nutrients would I be getting from this mix?

Then I go and buy some organic turkey and fish, for $25.00<<I hope...

that will get me some b-vitamins...maybe not all but some  ..

and maybe supplement with zinc, and chromium..

I dont know I am trying to save money, eat healthy, and get all of my nutients without having to spen 100 dollars on vitamins/minerals..whilst still getting my nutients..

Oh this is hard 😐 ..

I need to do some research on what foods contain the rda and veggies.

I'll be reporting back.

Hi,

if you are looking to consuming a whole complete range of nutrients and vitamins both from food sources like green smoothie and supplements, i have some recommendations for supplements which might help you meet the budget of 100dollars.

the multi vits i recommend are mostly made from 100% whole food and not synthetic vitamins. one down side about these multi is that you gtta take several tablets/capsules per serving to meet the daily rv. synthetic supplements tends to 'squeeze' all the vits and nutrients in 1 tablet.

the whole food multi vit i'm using is by Dr Mercola : "whole food multivitamin plus" USD$49.97/ bottle 1 month supply (240 tablets) (8 tablets a day with AT LEAST 100% of daily rv. i personally take 6 tablets only because im sure i get some from my food and green smoothie)

-there are other sources of whole food multivits out there too:

-one which cost more then dr mercola's (and probably better) : optimum food's "mega food" at USD $67 available at

http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c=1&pid=4020 .

you can try search for other sources, probably cheaper.

- several others that might not meet the 100% but frange from 70-100%

all listed in this website -- http://www.oneherb.com/categories.php?cat=2

nevertheless these are just supplements which i'm sure is way better den synthetic multivits, i.e. you need your green smoothie to give your body a boost which supplements are'nt able to. taking these whole food derived multi vits will safe the trouble for getting several diff sources of vitamins and nutrients.

as for which healthy foods to take.. lots of (1) green vegetables, (2) whole color range of fruits, (3) high fibre sources of complex carbo, (4) lean organic meat for full range of essential amino acid like turkey breast/ chicken breast/ salmon/ cod, + (5) a quality whole range omega 3/6/9 should do the job. if you stress yourself on getting the best out of your physical health, it could be bring down your psycological health! =D =D

oh and probiotics might be necessary too. in fact, with all the nutrients available under the sun, your body might not absorb them well enough without a good digestive system and these beneficial bacteria. so in order not to put these nutrients to waste, i think probiotic is equally important.

i highly recommend those with high cfu's despite so many critics out there saying high cfu doesnt mean a thing, they claim its how well they survive that counts. nevertheless, most probiotic supplemts with high counts are well known for their potency as well! most over the counter probiotics only offer 1-10 billion per capsule. even with enteric coating, their effect would still be insignficant in the trillions of bacteria in our GI tract.

my recommendation for probiotics would be:(slightly costly but per unit count of bacteria they cost much MUCH less)

1) custom probiotics cp1 50Billion = 50 000 million! with 5 different major strains.

90 capsules USD $40

2) custom probiotic 6 strain powder form. 50g (0.8g per serving yield 208 Billion) USD $100

100G USD $165. not that 100g can last you 125 days if you realli stick to the 208billion serving. for maintenance i feel half that 100billion a day is sufficient.

3) vsl3. although meant for specific digestive problems, you can take that on a regular basis. 225billion per 2 capsules / 450billion per sachet. cost varies. in my country it cost less then custom probiotics.

there are barely any other sources of probiotics as potent as the above two. the prices are quite a bargain to end off.

If time or motivation is an issue many health food stores have some great green powders with all the great greens and numerous grasses along with sea vegetables.

They taste great blended with fresh berries, a bananna (for thickness), cod liver oil, flaxseed oil, salba, along with fresh apple juice and an equal amount of water.

I really like one called Pure Synergy. It taste great, loaded with so many nutritious foods and a bonus it comes in a dark glass bottle. (not a toxic plastic one)

The biggest bottle is $1oo. Cd and the smaller one is $60. Cd. I guess it's a little expensive...I go through two bigger bottles a month and the next month I alternate with another green powder by a

ND. called Super Foods Plus.

Talk about an energy boost! YUMMY and CLEANSING!!

I bought a zinc capsule,50 mg

I bought natures bounty b-complex vitamin

I have vitamin c.

I plan on getting my vitamin E. through foods...I bought a load of COLLARD GREENS..KALE/BROCCOLI

This is maily what I will eat..

I have some white lean chicken, and some salmon ,(for my fish oil..)

I have some evoo..its gross..

I am about tro order the codliver oil from twinlabs, for my vitamin A&D..

I will order pure chromium, and also magnesium..

I also have some taurine...hows that?

Now I have just enough lefted to BUY A PROBIOTIC...HOWEVER I AM ALLERGIC TO DAIRY AND SOY, SO HOW DO I GET AROUND THAT?

COME ON GUYS, I AM ON MY WAY, AND I NED A GOOD PROBIOTIC, THAT WILL REPLINISH MY GOOD BACTERIA..HELP..

IF I AM ALLERGIC TO DAIRY, AND SOY..PLEASE CAN some one post which one to buy on here?

Thanks..

Bluks, is that one dairy/soy free?

If not, will it effect me if I am allergic to soy and dairy?

Thanks bud!! 😉

Paul25,

I would take a good quality DHA or a good fish oil. Getting fats from nuts/seeds, avocado, etc are also great choices.

It wouldn't hurt to add more greens like collards, bok choy, parsley, etc. The spinach and kale are both excellent choices though, and I would continue those - have you tried doing two large handfuls a day? It sounds to me like your body is needing more than what you are doing.

How's the rest of your diet? Have you tried cutting back on animal products - especially dairy?

creamsoda,

Dried greens are great in a pinch, as you suggested, but on a daily basis, they're just not going to do for you what blended, fresh greens will do.

bluks,

Great info - thanks for sharing all that. :)

ariellestar1234,

I recommend going in a health food store, or especially the supplement department of Whole Foods - those people are experts and will be able to tell you what you're looking for. I wouldn't "buy" the supplements there though - find a discount health food store in your area if you have one. Good luck!

hi ariellestar,

2) custom probiotics (cp1 50Billion per capsule/ 6 strain powder 260Billion/gram) is according to them dairy free, hypoallergenic, and do not contain any artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, sugar, gluten, soy or FOS. (All FOS contain free sugar). do check out their website and if you have any queries jst email harry, the founder of custom probiotics. (USD$40/cp1bottle/ USD$100/50gm OR $165/100gm)

[Removed]

i personally felt a more significant reduction in stomach bloating and fatigue from taking the powder form, probably due to the higher probiotic counts per serving. custom probiotic is one of the most promising probiotic supplement out in the market that offers one of the highest cfu.

2) another widely accepted by doctors and physicians around the world although does not require prescription would be VSL#3A. 225Billion/2capsules or 450Billion per sachet However regarding your intolerance to soy/dairy:

"Some dairy ingredients are used in the culture medium but are removed during fermentation and concentration. There might be trace amounts at very low levels and, for this reason, VSL#3A is not defined as a dairy-free product but as a non-dairy product. " +

"If you are lactose intolerant, you may wish to start with a very low intake of VSL#3A to see how you respond before increasing the amount." as quoted form the website. (price varies, check the website to get more details: [Removed]

3) Kirkman: * Super Pro Bio 75 Billion 60ct. not available in my country sadly. (USD$65)but im sure it is one of the more promising probiotic as well. "FREE OF COMMON ALLERGENS INCLUDING:

Wheat, gluten, milk, casein, corn, soy, yeast, sugar, egg, maltodextrin, artificial sweeteners, colorings or flavorings, stearates, preservatives and salicylates. Designed especially for the sensitive individual who requires a hypoallergenic formulation." again as quoted from the website.

* both kirkman and vsl3 can be purchased from this website: "[Removed] you can source out other better offers though.

4) Dr. Ohhira's, Essential Formulas Inc., Probiotics 12 Plus Professional Formula, 60 Capsules

100% vegan No dairy, soy or gluten Non-GMO, chemical-free. 600million cfu per capsule USD$41 from http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c...424015&at=0 . you can check for other better prices but iherb provides excellent service and international shipping rates. something unique here incomparison to the rest, only 600million which is only 0.6billion per capsule. but it has obtained lots of recognition and praises so.. i would give it a try too.

there are other great brands which might/does contain soy/dairy like cuturelle(10billion/capsule),

fivelac/threelac claimed to eat away your candida, bacillus coagulans by dr mercola/source naturals/ flora balance which is one of the more hardy probiotics that grow and move as spores which might fight candida as well. but i recommend you try the 1st 3 i listed first and judge for yourself which works best. you could alternate to experiment. i'm currently doing that. Im taking customs probiotics for now and i must say it has quite a surprising impact on me.

something to add on. green smoothie worked better then any other vitamins that i took so i seriously encourage you to focus more on them. the more i take the more significant the effect is. after you have finished all the separate supplements, you could try the 100% whole food multivits and nutrients. oh and i notice you have some candida issues too. some sweeteners that you can use for your smoothie would be stevia (not accepted by some countries though), lo han extract, erythritol, xylitol also available at iherb.com. stevia being the most preferable and most sweet. lo han extract second and the sugar alcohol as the last.

Hey all

Great post! I made my first smoothie yesterday. It was ok tasting. I put in some raw spinach with a cut up apple. I didn't have any frozen fruit to put in there but I'm going to pick some up today. And also pick up some more fresh greens and fresh fruits. I plan on making two of these a day. I also noticed that when I woke up this morning, my face wasn't nearly as red. Not sure if I had rosacea or something but my face seems much less inflamed!

I think this is the last little kick I need to rid my acne. I have been working at it for a while now, and got my face to the point where it is almost clear. I think this will make me completely clear. Thanks a lot for the info!

Creamsoda, can you post the link?

Thanks!!

I'm really sorry, but I don't know if there's a link, did you try doing a google search?

I actually buy my Metagenics at a Naturopath's office.

There is no soy or dairy if you buy the Dairy Free formula.

This accidophillus is so highly recomended and available through most of the ND's that I know and have seen throughout the years.

I'll try and see if I can find somewhere that you can purchase it online. If not and if you were really interested and had no luck finding it in your area you may be able to purchase if through one of the ND's offices out here....but some of them don't sell products unless your a patient

I'll check into it as well, just give me a day of two. Please! Thanks!

Loaded with everything and anything.

I personally don't buy too many supplements in health food stores....I tend to opt for the ones I can buy a ND's offices.

Really thought these were going to help my skin. Im not sure how long ive been going with them now but it seems a while. Dont know whether to give up or not, but it does seem pointless when they aint helping. I thought this sort of thing would really help with my dry skin but its not to be unfortunately. 🙁

Ooh don't despare! I battled with dry skin too.

So what I do is add 1tbsp. of cod liver oil, 4tbsp. of flaxseed oil.( I alternated it daily with hemp seed oil) 2tbps of salba (it's another name/brand of chia seeds) These are all really high in omega's. You can also add evening primrose oil to your diet (it's a supplement). Eating alot of greens, drinking plenty of water, freshly juiced juices for nutrients (along with hydration).

I also add a drop of pure emu oil with my daily moisturizer and at night I either use vit e (straight from the gel capsule) or emu oil on it's own.

I find it makes my skin soft and smooth.

And keep doing smoothies.

Using a humidifier.

Could your skin care products be too strong? And drying your skin out?

If you are taking any of the above oils and have been doing so for awhile your body may not be digesting the oils.

Dry, tight skin is frusterating!

Im abit scared of taking oils really. When i took fish oil my skin got so oily, it felt so horrible and caused a big break out. This probably wouldnt happen with the oils you have mentioned, so its worth a try and to see if they can help with my skin at all. Its always so dry and flaky, feels horrible all day long.

How are your hormones? Have you ever done anything to balance them?

I know that evening primrose oil is suppose to be good for that.

Isnt evening primrose oil more of a thing for girls? Or has it helped any males?

In todays smoothie i had.....

-Kale

-Apple

-Grapefruit

-Cucumber

-Flax seeds

-Sunflower seeds

-Wheat germ

-Coconut oil

What else could i include to help get rid of dry skin? Im going to look into getting some cod liver oil, but is there anything else that might help?

Ive been thinking about the fruits i include in my smoothies. Other than today it has always been an apple and banana. How much effect do the fruits in these smoothies make a difference other than just the taste? If you choose the right ones do they have much of effect on your skin?

I wanted to know how smooth it is supposed to be..I leftted mine kinda chunky...is this not good?

would I still get the high vitamin/mineral content?

I can eat these everyday for sure!

I will rotate eating this everyday, and on opposite days , eat salmon..or baked chicken with the greensmoothis .....and I should be a symbol of health!!

ABG Fairy, I'm sorry for this terribly pathetic question, but what are ALL the cruciferous greens you can use in a green smoothie that are commonly found at the supermarket/fruit&veg store?? Also, I saw cucumber alot in the post#1 recipes, is this for taste or do they add good nutrition?? (I love cucumber :D )

Ok so this is my fifth day on the smoothies. I learned how to make them taste a lot better. I am going to have to admit that this is really helping to clear up my face. I haven't been breaking out very much at all and if I do, it's fairly minor. Two of these a day is the way to go. hopefully these will keep me 100% clear. It just blows my mind that I need this much healthy nutrition in me to keep my face clear...while the average joe sitting next to me eats whatever he wants, drinks whatever he wants, and does anything yet remains zit free. But I guess that's something we're all trying to figure out.

Thanks for all the great insight!

psuboy,

Thanks so much for your posts! I'm really glad you're seeing a difference with the smoothies! Glad you got them to taste good too - that's important! :)

Paul25,

Wow, you are making some really healthy smoothies!! Try to get a variety of fruit, but doing apples and bananas should be okay too - I would just mix it up now and then though. Keep doing the cruciferous greens, like kale, spinach and collards.

Are you drinking enough water everyday? How about eating half an avocado everyday and taking a good fish oil (or a good DHA oil)? You might want to consider using aloe vera gel on your skin, along with your moisturizer. Here's a study by The National Institute of Health showing it's positive benefits for dry skin: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12548256 . I'm really sorry you're doing with such dry skin. :(

Thanks to tobias mentioning cucumbers, it just occurred to me that these might be helpful to add to your smoothies, as they are very hydrating for your skin. I learned this long ago in a raw foods class.

ariellestar1234,

How wonderful that you're enjoying the smoothies so much! :) Try to get them as smooth as you can - blending a little longer should help.

tobias,

That's not a pathetic question at all! It's a smart one! :) You can see a full list of cruciferous veggies here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruciferous_vegetables . Thanks to you, I just added this link to the first post. :)

Cucumbers are wonderful for your skin! They are very hydrating in fact... hmm.... I should tell Paul about these... another good idea I got from you. :) I mainly include them in recipes though because they're healthy and work really well in smoothies. :)

Thanks for your continued help. I drink alot of redbush tea throughout the day and it claims to be as hydrating as water . I have bought some cod liver oil and hoping it will help. I was wondering about taking supplements after green smoothies though, will it be okay to take the cod liver oil about 10-15 minutes after the green smoothie? Thanks for the link, i shall certainly have a read and look into using aloe vera gel.

Also something else i wanted to ask. Does anyone else find soon after you have had your smoothie you need to go to the toilet soon after? It always happens in the morning, and ive just made one now and the same thing has happened. Feels like its going straight through me and out in a matter of minutes lol.

I have to urinate soon after I drink them, but that is probably b/c it is about 5-6 cups of liquid... not the other excretory process, no. UGH I have been doing the smoothies for a week in comination with my carrot juice experiment and the skin where I have never gotten acne ever looks AMAZING. I mean I am straight up glowing on my cheeks/nose, I look like a freaking angel or something. However, on my forehead/lip area/chin I still have acne spots 🙁 🙁 🙁 I will keep doing these religiously and hope that I improve!!!

Paul25,

The tea sounds great, and it fine to take the fish oil after the smoothie - with (but not blended in) would be even better. The fats will actually help you to absorb more of the nutrition in the smoothie. :)

About having to use the restroom... I hold off on drinking my smoothies if I know I'll be leaving the house within an hour and might not have access to a restroom, because yes, they do catch up to you rather quickly! haha

Dyl,

So glad your skin is looking so great! And... you've only been doing them a week, so I'll be curious to know how your trouble spots are doing in another few weeks! :)

EddieE,

Let us know how it goes! :)
