bluks,

LOL about your grapefruit/bok choy smoothie! hehe 🙂 How are things going for you with the smoothies?

the effects of the smoothie is as great as ever. i have turned it into my breakfast though. and im using whey protein powder (unflavored) for the main source of protein. =D i know you're not totally supporting that idea. but i use the sunflower seeds for my homemade yogurt =D i wonder if i should take that much sunflower seeds a day for that amount of protein.. im still insistent about not using too much sweet fruits in there because of the "candida issue" which i think you dont believe in too =D i read up abt metabolic typing too. and i belong to the balanced type. they advise me to limit my sugar intake and fruits intake. just 1-2 serving of fruits for me is sufficient. (according to them) and focus more on complex carbo. so.. might as well apply for my smoothie as well.. but because of that.. i have to sacrifice the great taste most of you are enjoying.. nevertheless it taste alright =D all im asking for is great health in return! ive added in organic black sesame powder too for additional calcium in the smoothie. all in all, everything never seemed better! =D

I'm just checking back in since it's been awhile. I was without smoothies for bit because my blender broke. It was from when I got married over 10 years ago and it was cheap and crappy even then. I had barely used it until I started the smoothies recently. So, I did a bunch of research and ended up getting this one by Oster and so far so good!

Back to making smoothies! I'm still using the basic formula of: water, tablespoon fresh ground flaxseed, one apple, couple baby carrots, few frozen strawberries, blueberries if I have them, and large handful of baby spinach. I really like the taste although it comes out looking an unattractive brown color which my (very unhealthy eating) husband calls "poop juice". :snooty:

pakifairy, what are you making your smoothies out of? How much are you drinking each day? Sorry you're not fairing well. :(

I've incorporated silken tofu into my smoothies for a little protein boost in the morning since I drink them for breakfast. MMM! It's so smooth now vs. grainy or "chewy" which is cool because I drink mine with a straw. I hate when the straw gets clogged. Plus, it makes it a light mint green color which I find more appealling. Adding in crushed ice gives it the consistency of a milkshake.

I've broken two blenders in three months 🙁 got to go buy another one on Saturday. Two days without smoothies - how will I cope? 🙂

I was wondering if i can keep the green smoothies in the fridge for a couple of days, so i dont have to make one every morning? Or will this cause some elemental vitamins to go away?

If so, for how long would you recommend to keep them max.?

Thanks

You sure can. I drink mine up in 2 days, but I'm pretty sure they'd keep for 3.

Pakifairy,

If you're just doing a couple servings of fruit in your smoothies, I wouldn't worry about that. You should be fine with up to 4 servings of fruit a day if you're trying to lose weight. :)

You also said you weren't feeling well - are you doing better?

bluks,

So glad to hear you're doing so well! It's great that you've worked out a system that works for you too. An ounce or two (if you're really active) of sunflower seeds a day should be just fine - so glad you're including them in your diet!! :)

Lutya,

Happy to hear you're still enjoying the smoothies! Hmmm.... about the brown color.... I used to "sneak" spinach into fruit smoothies for my brother, and he never knew! I usually did something with lots of mango or pineapple (helps to give a "light" color), an apple, pear or banana, and then I'd add in raspberries or strawberries and a small handful of spinach. They usually came out looking a little pink.... no green or brown traces with these. hehehe :)

Siava,

Thanks for sharing your tips! :)

lollypolly,

Did you get your blender? I'd have a hard time going two days without smoothies too! haha

DaneV,

As a general rule, the fresher, the better, but storing smoothies for up to 48 hrs is just fine. I think I've even heard that 72 is okay, but I'd try to keep it under 48. :)

NTK8989,

You are very welcome!! :) I love posts like yours! :)

When i put my smoothie in the fridge and leave it for a few hours, the taste always gets really horrible. They always have a very horrible strongish aftertaste. Does this happen to anyone else?

Paul,

What do you normally make your smoothies out of? Perhaps your refrigerator needs to be at a lower temperature setting?

Oread,

Glad you like the stevia and vanilla! That's a great idea. I love adding stevia to drinks, but for some odd reason, I can't stand the taste of it in food or smoothies. Odd, huh? haha

I've been making lots of spinach, banana, cocoa powder and peanut butter smoothies lately.... so easy, and so delicious! :)

I've been making green smoothies for a little over a week now.

Sometimes I'll make one with spinach, kale, strawberries, bananas, water, ice, and a couple tablespoons of ground flaxseeds. I switch it up with collard greens and kale, or collard greens and spinach, or sometimes all three! I use blueberries and blackberries too. I LOVE using frozen fruit. These smoothies are so easy to make and they're so good. I'm drinking one right now :D

I've actually seen an improvement in my skin already. My skin is clear and glowing!

Just wanted to add to this: there is a supplement on the market called "greens plus". It has evetything in it under the sun and works wonderfully. It's in a power, you just add water and it actually tastes good. I think you would save $$ if you just got something like this.

AC324,

That's great! Thanks for sharing! :)

danielguru,

Cool idea, but dehydrated greens can't compare to fresh greens. It's really important to get in fresh greens.

Hi ABG fairy. Thanks for this awesome thread! I would definitely want to try this out, but I have some questions.

1)I would rate my acne as moderate-severe. What do you recommend me to include in my smoothie as a starter?

2)What's the difference between vegetables and greens?

3)What are cruciferous greens?

4)What's the difference between normal fruits and frozen fruits?

Any input appreciated.

KingBeta,

Glad you're interested in smoothies. :)

1) I would start with baby spinach - at least 2 large handfuls.

2) Leafy greens are the vegetables that look like leaves - spinach, lettuce, kale leaves, etc. They are our most nutrient-dense foods.

3) Cruciferous vegetables are spinach, kale, collards, bok choy, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower... click here for a full list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruciferous_vegetables

4) There is no difference except that one isn't frozen and the other is. :) Frozen fruits can just be more convenient and even cheaper, and they add a frozen-like consistency to smoothies for those that enjoy more of a frozen texture. They are not necessary to use.

Good luck and hope you see positive results soon! :)

So I tried my first smoothie today with:

1 green apple

1 banana

2 strawberries

1 handful spinach

Water

The taste wasn't so bad, but it can be improved. I was thinking about adding honey. Suggestions?

King Beta,

Sounds like a great first smoothie! Some mango or pineapple in there would be really good. You could also add vanilla extract, cinnamon, or stevia to sweeten. :)

Really thought these were going to help my skin. Im not sure how long ive been going with them now but it seems a while. Dont know whether to give up or not, but it does seem pointless when they aint helping. I thought this sort of thing would really help with my dry skin but its not to be unfortunately. :(

Hello ABG!!

I have just read most of this thread and it is amazing!!

I have clear skin at the moment from not taking the many vitamins that I was taking which included my allergen MSG..anywho now since I have not taken my vitamins I am feeling not as energetic as I used to...I am going to buy liquid vitamins..pure..

I tried the green smoothie thing earlier this year, in january..I added banannas, oranges, ext..However I was also dealing with candida...so I guess that was not a good idea..and I broke out...

I am very disciplined when It comes to diet...I can be vegan..raw..or paleo..and not have a problem..yet I want to start these green smoothies, and not eat meat at all and see if it would give me energy...I will start them tommorow...

Questions:

Is this all you guys eat?

or do you eat meat..white meats like fish or baked chicken sometimes?

If no..

then is this enough to give you all the energy you need throughout the day, with exercise included?

and do you still take any extra supplements? can you add supplenments/vitamins to these smoothies?

and lastly...can I just use blueberries, and no other fruit...?

I find that I do not break out when I eat blueberries...and they give plenty of energy?

That is it.

Can you answer me please, because I am going to buy a blender and supplies tommorow, so I cna start this asap!1

Thanks a bunch!! ;)

Paul25,

I'm sorry you're not seeing the results you had hoped for. :( Is your skin clear though? Have you tried healthy fats to help with your dry skin? And, I'm sure you're drinking enough water? If your skin isn't clear, make sure you are doing several "cruciferous" based smoothies a week.

ariellestar1234,

Glad you like the thread!

This is definitely not all we eat - it's just something we add to our diets. I eat a mostly vegan diet.

It's fine to add supplements, but they aren't necessary if clear skin is your goal - just do lots of cruciferous greens. You can add supplements to the smoothies, but it might not taste too great, haha.

It's fine to just use berries with your greens. If you don't want to use any fruit, check out the veggie based smoothie recipe, and the blended salad.

Best of luck to you starting out! :)

Thank you soo much!

I love your avatar, it is so cute!!

I am trying to get most to all of my vitamins from my foods..specifically the green smoothies, since belnded, they are MORE POTENT..

I have $160.00 as of tommorow...I need to buy a blender...and was conteplating on buying like 100 dollars worth of pure vitamins...however, If I can get most of my vitamins through the GREEN SMOOTHIES..

Then, All I would need to do then is, figure out what is what other vitamins I need..

Like basically saying..

I go and buy a 30 dollar belnder..and 30.00 worth of kale/romaine lettuce, and some blue berries, and cinnamon..

How many vitamins/nutrients would I be getting from this mix?

Then I go and buy some organic turkey and fish, for $25.00<<I hope...

that will get me some b-vitamins...maybe not all but some  ..

and maybe supplement with zinc, and chromium..

I dont know I am trying to save money, eat healthy, and get all of my nutients without having to spen 100 dollars on vitamins/minerals..whilst still getting my nutients..

Oh this is hard 😐 ..

I need to do some research on what foods contain the rda and veggies.

I'll be reporting back.

ariellestar1234,

Thanks! :)

What to eat can definitely be a tough road to navigate!

I would buy a blender and start making daily green smoothies. I would also start taking a basic, daily, multi-vitamin. You want to get a food-based, non-synthetic one. New Chapter is a good brand. Dr. Bob Marshall's Quantum Nutritional Labs are my favorites - they have to be ordered online though. Dr. Joel Fuhrman's supplements are very good as well. I'd find a good DHA oil or fish oil to take, pro-biotics (acidophilus), and possibly a vitamin D supplement. The key is to get most of your nutrients from the foods you eat by eating a very nutrient-rich diet. You can go to www.fitday.com and plug in the foods you eat to see what nutrients you are getting.

Try to cut back on animal products, especially dairy and focus on eating lots of vegetables, especially cruciferous vegetables. The diet I eat is described briefly in my signature. If you'd like tips/recipes for eating a well-balanced, highly nutritious, vegan diet, e-mail me at acnebegonefairy(at)gmail.com, and I'll be happy to send you some handouts. :)

It hasnt been clear for a long time, i go trough spells where i may have only one or two little ones but never been at a stage where im totally clear. I think this breakout has really got to me this time and i just gave up home on everything. I didnt make a smoothie today, but im going to restart tomorrow because there not going to be making things worse, they can only be helping. The fats ive been using are coconut oil and then seeds like sunflower and flax seeds. Ive only ever used kale and spinach for my smoothies, do you think i need to be abit more adventorous and try more? Also what other fats do you think could help with dry skin?
