I've just made an uber green smoothie from the following
Juice of one cucumber
Juice of two stalks celery
Juice half beetroot (raw)
Juice 4 leaves batvia lettuce
Juice 1 apple
Juice 2 peaches
Blend with
2 handful spinach
1 handful parsley
some basil leaves
1 handful coriander
2 medjool dates
1 teaspoon hemp protein powder
1 teaspoon coconut oil
1 teaspoon flax oil
1 teaspoon bee pollen
I was expecting to have to hold my nose with this one but bloody hell it was gorgeous!
I intuited from MonkeyDantsOff's post that they haven't exactly had the results they're looking for from the smoothies. Is this correct? These threads always have very little feedback from people who actually try it. Generally it's a bunch of "I should try that" posts...
I started doing green smoothies on a daily basis on April 30, so I'm close to having a month in by now. I have to say, I really haven't noticed much of a difference in pretty much anything, which disappoints me. I haven't ever made one that makes me forget about chocolate milkshakes, but aside from a couple (who's the fool that thinks spinach has a mild flavor?) bad experiments, most have been drinkable; that's all I need really.
I generally use lettuce and / or cabbage in them. Is cabbage a good approach? The propaganda videos talk about kale being wonderful, but they sure as heck don't have kale around here. I look to avoid iceberg lettuce, having heard that it contains little of nutritional value. I add half of a banana and either a couple of oranges or half of a bag of frozen berries to it. They always seem to separate very quickly, but I can drink them anyway.
I've also been eating a mostly raw diet for most of this time, though after some research about it on the internet I'm going to eat more meat now. Of course they say the animals get fed grains and stuff and you shouldn't eat it because of that. They really say you shouldn't eat anything but sprouts I guess. Heh. [/frustrated tangent]
The one thing that has seemed to improve a bit is the dandruff. I've often even had flakiness on my face in places. Lame, I know. Face generally seems pretty good, though the sides of the nose act up after a nice hot shower. Yes, that's a sign I should be picking up on, but heck, it seemed like I tried a fast temperate shower once and it still happened, so I kind of decided what's the point. Anyway, my hair seems more easily latherable now, but I'm not exactly on target to throw the head and shoulders out the window just yet.
Sorry, that kind of jumped around and didn't have much of a point. I'm disappointed that I haven't seen any overtly noticeable improvements from the smoothies yet. I'll keep at it until I have reason not to, though.

i don't drink green smoothies all that often. But lettuce/cabbage really are not the nutrient dense vegetables that you should be adding. In fact, drinking a blend of those vegetables is like drinking water.... I would not expect any benefits by drinking such a blend.
Add collard greens, mustard greens, bok choy, kale, spinach and brocolli. Those are the heavy hitters that will help your skin, in theory. They are high in nutrients. The whole point of green smoothies, really, is to encourage large vegetable/fruit intake, because eating whole vegetables is a pain in the ass at times.
Good luck!

I couldn't agree more, the whole point of green smoothies is that they are damn well greeny green and that means a mix of the darkest greens. If you can't get kale then try experimenting with the greens john mentioned as well as chucking in some herbs like parsley, coriander, basil etc. Rocket is great too however I'm guessing if you find spinach quite strong then you've got a wee bit to go to build up to the strong stuff which is where the fruits obviously come in handy. If you take your time and build up slowly you will naturally start to add more greens than fruit and find the taste quite pleasant. When I first started doing them it was pretty much a smidgen of greens going in as it was too much for my taste buds to handle.
In answer to your question yes they do help but only if you're getting the good stuff in them and alternating that good stuff once in a while. As an aside I have started to veer away from bananas as I believe they are quite mucus forming and acidic.
I hope you do stick at them and try out some different greens
Just to back track a little (I think I made my question a bit confusing), I was wondering if fruit sugars (since sugar is a culprit in alot of breakouts) breaks people out? So if I were going to drink a whole blenderful of greens, would it matter how much fruit I put in it? I just didn't get why the ratio was 60:40 since we could have alot more fruit and still consume the same amount of greens?
Anyone seen Iron Man? Did you notice he was drinking a green drink in the movie? hahaha
nicolehw,
Thank you so much for your glowing testimony and fabulous post!! So glad you are seeing such great improvements!
MunkeyDantsOff,I wouldn't worry about the fruit, unless you are still breaking out. If so, look over the first post where it talks about choosing low sugar fruits and not eating more than 3-4 pieces a day (and not all at once). Otherwise, you're right, fruit is very healthy, and it's fine to include in our diets so long as we don't go overboard on it and also eat plenty of vegetables. Don't worry about the 60/40 ratio - that is merely a guideline to help people. Good luck!
exasporeated,
You've gotten some great advice about using more nutrient dense greens. Also, most people would agree that baby spinach does have a mild flavor, and nobody here is a fool for saying so. I take it you were using a lot. Try starting out with one small handful and then work your way up from there.
Sounds like you are having some issues with blending your greens and fruits as well? Try blending a little longer. Also, keep in mind that sweet fruits like mangoes, pineapples, apples, pears, etc will make your smoothies taste better than less sweet fruits like oranges.
Keep in mind too that often it's the people that are having problems that feel motivated to post in these types of threads - the people that are helped have no reason to post, except to encourage others, but sadly, that's not often enough motivation for most people.
Hang in there! I know it can get discouraging with all the conflicting advice out there, but you definitely can't go wrong with eating greens, so at least you can feel good about that, hehe. Also, if you want some easy tips/recipes for a plant based diet, I can send you some handouts. Just e-mail me at acnebegonefairy(at)gmail.com if you're interested.
Hey ABG Fairy
This is my first post, I have been 'lurking' on here awhile and love the holistic section. I am especially interested in some of sepsi's ideas and am also very interested in the idea of green smoothies.. anyway, I also love the positivity radiating from your thread and all your posts in it!
Could you help me out by letting me know exactly what type of blender juicer whatever I need in order to make these green smoothies?
I'm a uni student with not a lot of money to work with, however I'm currently working a temp job which will give me a couple hundred to play around with.. I was hoping to use a lot of that on getting a blender or juicer. Do I need a blender and juicer? Or can you get both in one? Are there any features, types, brands, extras etc that I need to look for when I buy it? Do you know of a reliable product sold online that is at a reasonable price? Sorry for all the questions, some of them might be stupid, but I don't want to get conned into buying a piece of crap and wasting my precious moneys, lol.
I'd really appreciate your help with this cos I really believe that drinking green smoothies on a regular basis would help me in a tonne of ways, not just my acne (that would be a huge bonus tho!)
Cheers!
I want to try these!
Can anyone give me a good recipe with no fruit added please. Just strictly veggies. And something I won't gag with.
I usually eat a big salad once a day with dark green lettuce, cucumbers, avocado, etc. Should I just blend that up?
Oh and what's the deal on olive oil? I usually pour it on my salad... can I blend it in?
Kelly~~,
I'm really glad you posted, and thanks so much for your kind words!
I wish I knew of a really great, inexpensive juicer and blender, but I don't. When I got mine, I decided to splurge on machines that would last a long time and do a great job, so I did all of my research on the high-end models and ended up with a Vita-Mix blender and a Green Star juicer. They're both great, but many have done just fine using the $30-50 blenders from Walmart. How long they hold up to blending smoothies everyday, I don't know, but I don't think you could go wrong with starting out with one of those.
I got my juicer from www.discountjuicers.com - I would seek out what blenders/juicers they are recommending in your price range. If your acne is mild, I would just stick with the smoothies for now. If it's severe, then I'd look into a juicer too so that you can do green juice. If you're wanting a less expensive juicer that is still of good quality, I'd consider the Omega 8003 or 8005 models. You can read about them here: http://products.mercola.com/juicer/
Blenders: http://www.discountjuicers.com/blenders.html

Hope this info helps!
Jen121,
Glad you stopped by!
Hmmm.... an all veggie smoothie. Actually, I've made several of these before, and they're not bad! Adding avocado helps to give a creamy texture and parsley adds a wonderfully fresh flavor. Adding lemon/lime juice helps, and you can add in some onions/garlic as well. I would throw in greens (of course, haha), cucumber, celery, bell pepper, tomatoes, carrots (easy on the carrots though, as they can make a smoothie overly fibrous!)... just whatever veggies you happen to have lying around. Sounds like your daily salad would be pretty great blended up! For the olive oil, you won't need to add that since you'll be blending everything up and won't need a dressing. You'll be getting plenty of good fats from your avocado - you can also add nuts/seeds for good fats if you'd like.
Paul25,
You can add in avocado, nuts/seeds, and I think I've heard that cucumber is supposed to be very hydrating for one's skin. I would also get a good quality omega-3 oil (but I'd take that separately, as it probably wouldn't taste so great in a smoothie).
Thanks ABG fairy! I might try getting one under $100 first, to see if I'll even stick to it doing it daily (pretty sure I will but ya never know). I just read over the first post in this thread and it says to put both the fruit and leafy greens in the blender? so do I need a juicer to start off with? (or at all, since i'm not planning on including much fruit?). perhaps if i go to the store and just tell them what I wanna do, they'll be able advise me.. (or rip me off, lol - hopefully the former!)
I'll have a look at the links too and look into getting one online. I don't eat much fruit cos of blood sugar stuff (headaches) so i was thinking of just adding 1 banana and 1 green apple.. or strawberries/lemon.. anyway, I'm excited about this. Thanks again
Hi this is my first post here, I was just wondering will green smoothies help with red scars left from acne... if so can you recommend a smoothie that has only veggies... I have tried doing beets, carrots, cucumbers, celery, lettuce, green apples, spinach, are this good veggies?
thanks
I got some candida problems, so I cant eat fruit or any sugar at all right now. But I really want to try out some of these veggie-smoothies.Anyone got a good tasting one, without fruits or nuts in it? Perhaps someone is in the same candida situation as me? 😀
i have a candida problem too. but i think its ok to blend 1 small apple with the smoothie. alternatively, you could add stevia / xylitol for sweetening. i add cocoa powder too which helps in the flavouring. 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon might help.. i add black sesame powder too. and lemon. it seriously doesnt taste that bad after all.
I'm so excited, I just went and bought my blender. It's a breville, 1200W 'kinetix' (or something? too lazy to go and check :-P) part of the '800' series, or whatever.. it's one of the so-called professional ones. Cost me around $210 (I plan on using it daily for a long time so I thought I should spend at least a reasonable amount to get a decent one!) and I just made my first green smoothie. Tasted pretty damn good!
I used two cups baby spinach, 1/4 cup natural yoghurt, 1 cup apple and blackcurrent juice (bottled but no added anything), 1/2 cup water and 1 banana.
How many am I supposed to have a day? ABG Fairy, you have four, right? I read on some website [seemed pretty dodge] to not have the same leafy green every day because it can become toxic, or something.. then again, he was trying to sell these growing trays with all different types of greens.. anyway, is that true? I know using a variety would be advantageous but is it actually dangerous to have the same greens (eg. spinach) every day?
Mmmm. I just started making these and I'm totally hooked. I do have more energy and my BMs are much more regular. I dig it!
My favorite so far is simple, fast, and yummy which is why I like it the best. All measurements are approximate:
6 or 7 big romaine leaves
1/2 cucumber
1 banana
1 cup watermelon
1/2 cup black grapes
1 cup water
The only all veggie one I've made was pretty tasty, but I prefer the sweetness of fruit. Here's the recipe for the all veggie one:
6 or 7 big romaine leaves
1 handful of baby spinach
1/2 cup broccoli
2 carrots (I shredded them with a grater first because I didn't want them tearing up my cheap blender)
1 large tomato
3/4 cup water
dash of hot sauce, salt, and pepper
***Just want to emphasize to everyone to try to focus on cruciferous greens like spinach, kale, collards, bok choy, etc., as these will have the most beneficial effect of all the greens for clearing your skin! I twice in the past month went a week without cruciferous greens, and both times, a blemish showed up on my chin! It's pretty rare these days for one to show up at all! I put two and two together and realized that I hadn't had any "cruciferous" greens! I had also been eating some poor food choices, so it was probably the combination of the two, but usually my green smoothies safe guard me even when I eat poorly! So anyway... drink up those cruciferous greens!!!
darkviolet31,
Several people have posted about experiencing quicker healing of their red scars when drinking the smoothies. The veggies you listed are all fine. There are examples of veggie smoothies under the recipe section of the first post. Please see below for more comments on these. Just be sure to keep your focus of each smoothie on greens!
MrFabolous,
There are recipes for all veggie smoothies in the first post - they include an apple, but apples are low sugar fruits, so you might want to include it, otherwise, just do the recipe without the apple. If you skip the apple, try half an avocado - it'll add a creamy flavor to your veggie smoothie. If you don't like the veggie smoothie, I'd recommend trying out one of the veggie soup recipes, as you'll be getting blended greens with those too.
bluks,
LOL about your grapefruit/bok choy smoothie! hehe How are things going for you with the smoothies?
Kelly~~,
Your blender sounds great!!
Your smoothie sounds really good, but beware that dairy is a major acne trigger for most people, so you might want to consider skipping the yogurt.
I do about four cups of green smoothies a day, but the main thing to keep in mind is to have at least 1-2 large handfuls of blended greens a day combined with at least one fruit (or veggie), and be sure that you get several servings a week of cruciferous greens like spinach, kale, collards, bok choy, etc.
I really can't answer whether it'd be dangerous or not to do the same green everyday, but it is recommended to mix them up. I probably do more spinach than I should....
Siava,
So glad you're enjoying your smoothies!! Your smoothies sound great, and the all veggie smoothie recipe of yours would taste great with half an avocado thrown in for an extra creamy flavor!
pakifairy,
Collard greens are great. They are a cruciferous green, which is what you really want to focus on, as these are the most powerful of the greens for balancing your hormones. Other cruciferous greens are spinach, kale, bok choy, etc. Consider removing the stems of the collards and kale if they are too fibrous.
Watermelon and cantaloupe would be just fine to add in, although some people have a hard time digesting melons with other foods... just see what works for you.
hi i need recipes, tons and tons i love doing this but my smoothies taste really bad 🙁 recipes would be great!
There are several recipes given under the first post. Have you looked at those yet for ideas? Try using just baby spinach for now, and only use sweet tasting fruit like apples, pears, bananas, and frozen fruits like mango, pineapple, peaches and berries. See if that helps! 🙂
